Modern Hawai'ians are upset by this song, if it's anything to go by. It's like cutting and pasting songs of George Washington with Abraham Lincoln together, into one song. "Wha...?"
I don't know. It's only at the beginning and middle of the song, so it would be like saluting the Queen and her memory at the beginning (and middle, I never said my theory was solid) before commencing with the song. At least they respect their former Queen, we see our Presidents as f***s and we hate 'em (even Washington gets crap from time to time).
WC-83 I mean, presidents and royalty are people. They all have done bad and good things. (I say that grudgingly...). I know it seems great to have a perfect fairytale king, but...They're only fully loved by the people when they're dictators requiring people to say that xD Even Britain's queen gets criticism, but she's loved and praised.
Every person in a Royal or leadership position gets bullshit because theyve done or had to do things that werent favorable by the people form time tot time but thats what comes with the job description. I dated this Hawaiian girl once and she and her family told me about their story. Theyre highly respected and loved but of course people hate some of the things they had to do
It takes on a new power when you actually know what they are saying. I knew this song had power, but I never knew the reason for that power was because they were praising someone. Kind of like a hymn or gospel, where the power emanates from the words themselves.
Wow. The Hawaiian people are so sacred about their land it is so unbelievable. It also looks like you put in a lot of work in the video. Thanks for sharing.
This is beautiful. And yes I cry with joy when I hear it. The first time I heard it as a child it just hit my soul. And I knew not what they were saying. And 18 yrs ago I got the translation from my teacher. Yes I was in the middle of history crying. And No 40 with 4 kiddos. And it still has gives me chill and tears of joy. Thank you to the country of Hawaii. And thank you Disney for helping outside such as myself be able to experience such a song understanding and remembering of such a beautiful culture. ❤❤❤😘🥺🥰🥰🥰
I've known this song since I've first seen it in the Lilo and Stitch film and I've loved it ever since. But only now I understand and am able to grasp the whole meaning of this wonderful piece of music. What a beautiful text! Amazing!
I KNEW there was a reason that opening verse made me tear up as a kid. This is what I always say to those who wonder why I listen to music that isn't in English. You need to understand the words to understand what it's saying.
The translation is so beautiful and proud. This and One By One from The Lion King always make me cry, I can only imagine how moving they are for people of those cultures.
As a fellow Austronesian (I am Indonesian), there are some interesting parallels of words in this song: manu = manuk (bird) hulu = bulu (feather/plumage) wahine = bini (woman/lady)
+AubrentheJack some Polynesian languages have a few words in common. It's amazing how Polynesians spanned so much territory geographically so they became all this amazing cultures. They even had contact with people from Chile and Peru since way before Christopher Columbus "discovered" America.
I love this song, it's so perfect and spiritual and uplifting. I take both belly dancing classes and art classes. So I am making a dance routine to this song and drawing a picture of Chief Kalakaua. :)
I absolutely adore this song and attempted and failed to learn Hawaiian to sing along to this song and now seeing the translation it reads like a hymn you'd sing in church and it's absolutely beautiful xxx
This is so beautiful and the lyrics are refreshing, gorgeously composed and well put together (I practice dancing to this song, its just pure awesomeness)
@@SowerValler Um, no. Sorry. Hawaiian is a nationality. You either are, or you aren’t. That’s like saying you can just suddenly decide to be Irish even if you have no Irish blood.

in the first part of this awesome vid Hanauma Bay is the background! it’s located in my home of Oahu! I would always go there as it’s one of the best places to go snorkeling!!! 💙
Thanks for doing this so well. I am trying to learn this and your video is the only truly helpful one. Great images too! I really appreciate you taking the time to put this together. The very end just doesn't seem to match up, but I guess it's just because it's unfamiliar to my ear.
It does seem a little off, but these are the official lyrics I believe. Maybe they slurred the pronunciation a bit during that last part. I do happen to know why the 'kulele' in the lyrics sounds like 'tulele'. It's because [k] and [t] in hawaiian are variations of the same phoneme /k/, and although [k] is the more favored pronunciation nowadays, [t] is still quite common, especially in the Ni'ihau dialect.
K. | "Aloha! Peeps!" It's kinda funny... I can't get this song out of my head. for about a week now. I have no afinity with Hawaïan culture or anything, I'm just a sucker for cartoons and I just love Lilo & Stitch :P . So there. On the other hand, however, I also sing..privately, though well outside of the bathtub... a choir even, well not for some time now. Anywho! I was immediatly enchanted by this song and I think it's really very beautiful I shall never forget it but it does feel very, very strange to have te urge to burst into song-- in Hawaïan-- whereas I am Dutch and living in Holland. I'm not sure anybody would understand me at all ^_^ Hahaha! Anyway, I just thought I should share my appreciation of the song with you good people. Continue to enjoy! Bye!

My hawaiian native roommate could hardly watch Lilo and Stitch because this song always drove him to tears.
I bet if Queen Liliuokalani and her brother King Kalākaua, whom she succeeded, were alive to hear this they would smile. Such a beautiful song.
atmatheprophet I liked her and she took what happened to her and her country so gracefully. A true queen.

In my personal opinion this would make a much better state song, and hopefully someday a national anthem.
Michaelcarroll1 Could it be a secondary one?
Disagree. Hawaii Ponoi has great historical significance.
@Rana Lui-Kwan please tell us some of the songs you'd rather and I'll definitely look into them :)

Huh...are Hawai'ian and your language in the same language families?
Yes. Austronesian. But ours is a distant relative. We're from the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the family.

Such power in the song. I could only see english translations of other songs that strike such beauty in me than actual songs in english.
How beautiful! The song itself is already beautiful but to know they’re paying homage to Hawaii and it’s legends and beauty is awesome
i love that kiluae is mentioned, its such a huge piece in their culture. and im got gonna lie their songs are beautiful.

kalakaua is the last King of Hawaii , i think he did great things to earn this song
He did many great things for his people so did his sister lydia kamakaeha liliuokalani.
You might want to try some songs by these singers: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole & Keali'i Reichel. They sing in Hawaiian too.
