I know that this story will never happen in real life, but sometimes we just want to escape from reality and dreamin that something magical, some serendipitious moment will come to our live.
The story is improbable but not impossible! There is always a chance of finding that special person, even if we get lost at times. As many have said, we can make our own luck! 👍
I really loved Underworld. The first two movies are great, and then the third that explains all the backstory is fantastic. Bill Nighy is, as he always is, amazing.
Serendipity is actually more like fortuitous. Like a lucky coincidence. Fun fact: Jeremy Piven and John Cusack are... were best friends in real life, so their chemistry was real-Real. And they acted several movies together. Apparently, John Cusack's career slowing down and Piven's picking up during Entourage brought strain to their friendship. But they are always a delight to watch together. Especially in Grosse Point Blank.
I love the fact that the only time John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale were together in the movie was the beginning and the end. Very unique for a romantic movie.
That's true. In all the rom coms I've watched (a lot!) only Sleepless in Seattle is similar and they only actually meet at the end. Both movies are so unique! I really enjoyed their reaction to this film.
I love that the current partners aren't assholes. They're just not right for our main characters, something is missing - just like in real life. I'm friends with all of my exes/ex-crushes, no matter who ended things/rejected me; we just weren't right together as romantic partners. In this aspect, this movie really speaks to me while still appealing to my inner hopeless romantic ♥️
I’m also friends with most of my exes (except my ex-wife, but we’re still cordial & I’m still friends with her mom). I’ve never understood why people hate their exes so much. I’m always surprised that such a high percentage of ex couples don’t get along with (or even despise) each other.
Back in 2003, I was watching it with a roommate. He says “Man, this guy has worse luck than I do” and without missing a beat (though not maliciously) I said “Nah, he gets the girl at the end.” He has now been married for about 17 years. Guess the joke for making that comment was on me! 😂😂😂
As a millennial hopeless romantic myself, I adore this movie. I have Serendipity tattooed on my forearm, this movie holds such a special place in my heart
On a side note, THANKS DUNCAN for this selection. Listening to mr and mrs tbr at the end talking about never hearing about this flick would never have even known to check it out... I know it's not in the accepted cream-of-the-crop of films out there, but it kills me that if it wasn't for the 'winning suggestion', tiny gems like this would never be on a reaction channel much less see the light of day on one. So many similar flicks like Guarding Tess, The Commitments, Tin Cup, Goodbye Girl, Local Hero, Gosford Park, Fabulous Baker Boys, Remains of the Day, Stranger Than Fiction, Fly Away Home, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Bridget Jones Diary, Four Weddings & A Funeral... 😂😂😂
“RETURN TO ME” with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny and Bonnie Hunt ( co wrote/ directed) and Jim Belushi is a beautiful movie, how their lives are touched by sad circumstances and yet they come together..( don’t know how well I explained it but it’s great!)
One of my favorite rom-coms of all time. The music is great, the chemistry is great between Cusack and Beckinsale (albeit brief), and story is just fun.
I swear if that ever happened to me the first thing I'd say to her when we meet up again would be a calm yet firm "...don't you EVER do that again!" 😂😂😂 But seriously, let's pour one out for all the Bridget Moynahan's, Michelle Monaghan's, Sela Ward's out there that have to take one for the team!
Yea! So glad that you two loved this movie... it is so fun so romantic funny and one of the best soundtracks. So cool that the two of you just got into it and enjoyed it for what it is. "Prado"😊
Serendipity was the first movie my now wife and I watched together. I had already seen it and owned it as John Cusack had a run of some of my absolute favorite movies and could do no wrong by me. I brought it with me when we had plans to hang out. Because of both the personal meaning and the fact that the plot is 100% in her wheelhouse, it has become one of her all time favorites. We went to NYC for a couple of days last year for her 40th birthday and stopped at Serendipity. Unfortunately we didn't know at the time that they take reservations for a reason. After well over an hour of waiting, we took our names off the list. However as one local we met later in the day put it, we still won as we at least got to go in and see it without spending $20 for a single ice cream.
Yeah, same thing similar happened to us...Since we were in New York thought we would lunch at Serendipity and a New Yorker heard were heading there she said "...we'd have quite a long wait." We opted for another restaurant cause we were hungry LOL
Great movie! If you go back and watch there are many more coincidents that you miss on the first viewing. An example is the guy who hits the golf ball that hits Molly Shannon is Haley's father.
Not a movie I expected to pop up on a movie review channel, but kind of a guilty pleasure movie of mine from the era, even if ridiculous. Kate of this era was ridiculously beautiful, and that little nose crinkle thing she did always stuck with me (along with Elisha Cuthbert's lip bite in The Girl Next Door).
Bridget Moynihan (current co-star of long running Blue Bloods show) was also in SATC as the 2nd Mrs. Big (she got cheated on by Mr. Big and Carrie); her character was very nice in that show too. She seems generally unlucky in love, and I’m not even going to touch on her private real-life!
Love this movie! Was going through a horrible time in my marriage and saw this playing on HBO one late night. Taped it and watched it like 3 times in a row, never going to bed. So much happier all the way around and never miss an opportunity to watch this. Glad you liked this and great choice Duncan!!!!
one of my childhood favorites :) I always wanted John Cusack and kate Beckinsale to be the next Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and do several Rom Coms together :) Love their chemistry
I think it was a brilliant move to make Halley a great partner. Because the moment when she gives him the book hits so much harder, because she didn't deserve it at all. If she was horrible, you would be just cheering that he finally got the book, even from her, but doing it this way made it sad.
You should totally do at least one early Cusack film. I heartily recommend the weird comedy Better off Dead! It's hilarious and something that would never ever be made after the 80s lol.
@@misterkite One Crazy Summer is pretty crazy! Yeah... The Sure Thing is slightly less weird than those two, but still good for a few laughs. That one would still get made today sadly lol.
Even though it's never happened to me in a romantic context, sometimes the universe has given me exactly what I need when I needed it. Way too often for me to doubt or question it.
Guilty Pleasure, one of my favorite romance comedies that I would always catch on TV at like 1am in the living room laying on the couch. God I loved these John Cusack days.
This was one of the sad movies that came out after 9/11 that had to make a tough call about what to do with the Twin Towers; they opted to edit the towers out of a scene where they were visible (I think they were visible from the park… maybe a daylight scene from the ice rink… I can’t remember for sure but I think I remember reading articles discussing it at the time and it may be easy to find with a quick internet search). The setting and release timing may have made this movie less popular in the romcom fan world as a lot of people weren’t in the mood for this when it came out and many only discovered it on video later.
Such a great reaction. The book gift scene always gets me. Such a great movie, and amazed you two first met as kids at school. Much love from New Zealand.
I went on a date with my then boyfriend to see this movie and then went to the actual Serendipity 3 (the full name of the cafe/restaurant) for a Frozen Hot Chocolate after. Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol used to hang out there.
This came out when I was about 14, so for our generation, it was like the Sleepless in Seattle level of romantic comedy. Wife and I also met when we were young, two years after this came out actually, and also in high school. We've watched this several times over the years, and as you guys said, it's just a nice escape from a lot of romantic movies that get super formulaic, especially these days, with the current partner being really terrible, making it really obvious that the main couple would be together in the end. This went another way by making their partners pretty solid people, and that was a nice change from the usual. Couple that with Jeremy Piven and Eugene Levy providing the levity (pun intended), and its still a solid rewatch with your significant other all these years later :)
😂 You have somehow bumped into a good one ... this one is on top of my list for a romace-comedy movie❕ I first watched it when I had no idea about this movie, and that was the best way of enjoying it❕
This is one of the several rom-coms of that period I loved. One that is not mentioned so much that is wonderful also is French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. Maybe that could be added to the wheel!
I was talking about this movie once with someone who hated it for the same reason I liked it. I really hated movies where one (or both) of the main characters would be involved with a clearly awful person that they stayed with for no explicable reason, so I liked that in this one, their respective partners were pretty damned good. At no point did I think "WTF is wrong with you" about either of them. The person I was talking to hated it because they didn't like that these two really exceptional and nice people ended up getting dumped.
Holy Heck NO ONE EVER reacts to this and this is one of my favorite movies of all time..... I was about to go to sleep but not now, lets go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
90s romantic comedies were something else. A great era of film if you were into that sort of thing. I know this wasn't technically in the 1990's, but it definitely hit that same kind of movie. John Cusack was one of the biggest beneficiaries of that time as well. And he always gets rained on. Serendipity is happiness by chance, like because of being in the right place at the right time that leads to good fortune. Some of my favorite Kate Beckinsale movies are, Cold Comfort Farm (1995), Emma (1996), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Underworld (2003). And favorite John Cusack movies: Eight Men Out (1988), Broadcast News (1987), Say Anything (1989), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), Pushing Tin (1999), Cradle Will Rock (1999), Being John Malkovich (1999), High Fidelity (2000), America's Sweethearts (2001), Runaway Jury (2003), Martian Child (2007).
Serendipity is one of my favorite romantic comedy with While you Were Sleeping.. Others ones are My Best Friend Wedding, Love Actyally, Pretty Woman, Splash
I like this one too. It is just a fun, random, eventful, story of luv. I don't like a bunch of romcoms but this one and Fool's Gold are amongst my favorites.
I am so glad that you two finally got the opportunity to watch this movie and it has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it originally years ago when it came out on video I like it so much that I actually Tracked Down the book Love in the Time of Cholera and actually replicated her phone number and name as seen in the movie as well as a five-dollar bill to replicate his name And phone number And have it Together Right next to my DVD copy of the movie That you are meant to be together
Like most movies from the 2000’s. I saw this while watching the premium movie channels. I was 14 and I just loved the whole thing. Was a hopeless romantic as a young man and this movie spoke to that.
Love, love, love this movie ❤ However, Sara for me is past obsession, while Haley is someone who knows and loves Jonathan for years. Why would anyone throw away a great relationship for someone they only know for like a day? I know it’s fiction but still it gets my nerve 😆
The more accurate detailed definition of *Serendipity* is destiny, or kismet. Good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries. type of: fluke, good fortune, good luck. a stroke of luck.
Highly recommend the greatest romantic comedy of all time, which is SPLASH (1984). Starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, John Candy and Eugene Levy. Outstanding romantic fantasy comedy.
Love this movie, there are 6 main rom/coms you can not go wrong with. Serendipity A Walk to Remember The Note Book Under the Tuscan Sun Must love Dogs and How to lose a guy in 10 days If you have not seen these, you won't be sorry to watch them, so good.
"Six Degrees of Separation" is an old concept about how interconnected the world is, but it was later the title of a play in the 1990s...the sign you saw was an ad for the play (latyer adapted into a pretty good Will Smith movie). Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon was a joke that arose later on after Will Smith's movie came out.
This is my Christmassy Rom/Com guilty pleasure - it helps me get in touch with my romantic side, and the soundtrack is excellent; Bap Kennedy, Annie Lennox, Nick Drake, Shawn Colvin, etc. (but NOT the crap by Lars!). Serendipity is 'fortunate happenstance'. Forcing it, as Sara tries to is just ill-advised, you see how long this takes to develop. Dean's reading of Jonathan's pseudo obituary is so darn good.
Now ya'll should check out the Cusack movie that's kind of a Rom-Com called "Say Anything". Piven is in there in addition to a bunch of other folks you might recognize. The soundtrack is perfect for the film.
I know that this story will never happen in real life, but sometimes we just want to escape from reality and dreamin that something magical, some serendipitious moment will come to our live.

Kate was otherworldly beautiful in this. I mean, she always is, but especially in this
It’s like, every time I look at her, I’m surprised at how beautiful she is🤣
I think she looks the best on Click
Serendipity is coincidental good luck. Like if you broke down and a tow truck just happened to be behind you.. that's serendipity.
*Unless the tow truck operator is a serial killer.*
Thanks. At the beginning of the video, she said it’s happiness, but that’s not exactly right.

You would both like The Way Way Back. Underrated film with Steve Carrell and Sam Rockwell.
I love TBR thinking the music video was Cool Hand Luke. 😂😂😂😂
Such a charming beautiful movie that just makes you feel so good and everything is going to be okay
Love Kate Beckinsale ❤❤
Like most movies from the 2000’s. I saw this while watching the premium movie channels. I was 14 and I just loved the whole thing. Was a hopeless romantic as a young man and this movie spoke to that.
Uh I looooove this movie ❤ this and Kate & Leopold are classic early 00’s rom coms.
The music January Rain, by David Gray is such a great end to the score.
Love, love, love this movie ❤
However, Sara for me is past obsession, while Haley is someone who knows and loves Jonathan for years.
Outstanding romantic fantasy comedy.
i am wanting and waiting to reconnect with my own Sarah (Actual name). The last time I actually saw her was on Friday, March 5, 2021.
Love this movie, there are 6 main rom/coms you can not go wrong with.
Serendipity
A Walk to Remember
The Note Book
Under the Tuscan Sun
Must love Dogs and
How to lose a guy in 10 days
If you have not seen these, you won't be sorry to watch them, so good.
Kate Beckinsale and Bridget Moynahan in the same movie, someone is trying to drive me crazy.
Seeing as you enjoyed this, I recommend One Fine Day (1996) with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer. A must watch, imo.
You should watch High Fidelity. John Cusack with Jack Black in his breakthrough role. Cusack is a record bar owner with Jack as his employee.
Felt sorry for bridget moynahan (aka the first ex misses tom brady), but kate beckensale was way too beautiful
High fidelity is my favourite John cusack movie
One of my fav movies ever.
This really is a TERRIFIC movie!!!!!!!!! Great reactions by you two!
