the ducks judging the duck stamp contest is honestly classy as fuck
If the association didn't ask for that one as a donation to spruce up the place, theres no hope for them.
classy as duck you mean

It is my favorite as well.
yes, that's an absolute masterpiece.
I love how he's both insulting the judges AND helping their cause.
It's like a well-done pro-wrestling match: one side might take a little damage, but in the end no one looks weak, and everyone's entertained.
Approximately $100K raised from those 5 art pieces. Well done!

The Duck with a pearl earring sold for $ 16,185

Hell of a pay day for the painter or painters.

How are you the first to pen this and bravo.

The "Ducks judging Duck Stamp Art" one unironically seemed like a real contender, if not for the numbers rule.
It's already up to 17k.
If I had spare thousands this is the one I’d bid on.
Not anatomically accurate, sadly.
It's going for the most atm.
Definitely the one I would most enjoy on my wall at home.
Oh, quack! Are we late to the party? Guess we were busy rewinding our nifty 90s video tapes… 📹
Sorry those entries didn’t fit the bill! Better duck next year? 🦆 Thanks for supporting wildlife conservation and raising awareness about the Federal Duck Stamp Program!
We’re jazzed seeing all this enthusiasm about the Federal Duck Stamp Program - didn’t ruffle our feathers one bit! 🦢 In fact, we’d love to have you visit @USFWSRefuges & experience Duck Stamp dollars at work. 💰

I wish that the swedish wildlife ministry would be as good as you lot!
My father would have loved all these shenanigans. He entered many times and came in 8th one year before he passed away. Keep up the good work!
Amazing
The "no numbers" rule actually makes sense. This art is meant to be put on stamps, which need to have meaningful numbers put on them, so numbers in the art could potentially be confusing.
boooooo who asked you, narc? 😜
@@kaycook5031”who asked you”? It’s a RUclips comment section, no one asked for any comment, yours included.
What you’re really trying to say is they should submit that painting again but have the numbers on the duck judge paddles be the numbers for the year that stamp might be used? I like the way you think!
Ya... I'm beginning to think John Oliver isn't taking this thing too seriously
It can also be very difficult to ensure there are no coded messages in the numbers or letters.
The duck hunting the hunter who’s hunting the duck painting is fantastic.
But not anatomically correct as to the holding of the gun.

What, you're saying you can't dish out a 5 digit sum of money to buy a joke painting of a duck? Did you see that one of them is still at $3000? That one surely isn't a problem, just give yourself a nudge and buy that ridiculous thing!
I wanted to see the auctions myself but I am from the wrong country xD but thankfully (as I read the comments) I wasn't able to bankrupt myself
I literally went to art school and I'm somehow surprised they're going for that much XD
@@CaptainSweatpants90 Normally I would agree with you, but it kind of is for charity so I am glad that people are spending a lot of money on them.
Still kind of sucks that some people have enough money lying around to spend on stuff like this with out a second thought and others have to choose between rent and food. That is capitalism for you.
At least it is for a good cause..
@@gamerguy425 I'm not. In general they wouldn't go for anywhere near the prices they will go for. But if you get a famous person attached to it, AND it's for a joke, AND it's for donating to a good cause? Easily make that kind of money.
"the Trump Administration required hunting equipment" I.....I don't know how to feel, like I should be mad but I am more stunned that the Trump government found such a niche aspect of government and NEEDED to just Trump it up
For those who also forgot this part, the Trump administration required that hunting imagery be displayed on the stamp. Roughly 5:30 if you want to skip
It’s so ridiculous. I think the only reason for that requirement was because some Trump official didn’t like that conservationists also collected the stamps and wanted a petty way to spite them.
yeah, good lord that creeped me tf out. gotta have hunting stuff in a duck habitat saving stamp? that's not the creepy part tho- how many other random obscure corners of our vast federal government structures, rules, and laws did he reach in and manipulate? his sick and twisted mark on our democracy might pop up for decades to come. maybe that was his legacy goal.
If you take a broader view of it, It's actually a surprisingly cunning plan. First off, you drive away conservationists by distorting the imagery, reducing funding for conservation efforts (something Trump is against) while still appealing to his rootin' tootin gunslinging voting base who wouldn't see this as a negative. As part of a broader plan to attack conservation efforts, it's surprisingly sophisticated and insidious, if this is the intent.
@@ValleysOfRain I'm a little upset that you are very likely correct. I guess while Trump would never have this level of intrigue, I should be more watchful for all the underlings who might actually be closer to the evil side of the meter. Hopefully that requirement has been or will be removed.

The auctioning of the original prints came as a genuine surprise, as I was completely expecting an announcement of where copies of the LWT submissions could be purchased (all proceeds going to wetland conservation, naturally). And could arguably bring in even more than the auctions. (How? Volume, baby!)

Declaration of Heavenly Citizenship
I am a citizen of heaven and God's Kingdom, I am born into a Nation that wont be shaken.
God's name is written everywhere throughout his creation, before we are conceived he knows us and called us his own.
I am bound by God laws, his love and perfect justice has always existed.
I have free will to choose to accept God as my king or reject him completely.
Either way he accepts my decision and acts accordingly.
I have chosen to serve him since I was an adolescent, although my actions didn't always convey that message.
Still God hasn't shut me down, given up on me, or condemned me for my mistakes.
That is true justice, and that is a just King.
When I was born a United States citizen it was a different story entirely.
My birth certificate tied me to this country and established me as their property.
I was led to believe that I had freedom here, that our whole Nation fought for our rights to religion, persecution, and discriminations.
This free will / freedom that I thought as a kid " I am so blessed to live in a country like this." Has deteriorated, been criminalized and deplatformed.
I have no problems with common sense laws (pretty much summed up by the 10 commandments)... or one Love your neighbor.
Although when the laws started to not make sense and conflict with God's law, that is when enough is enough.
I have done all I can do to follow the laws in this country and support the union that I pledged allegiance too.
For a long time you had us fooled and full of pride in America, when it was the time for humility.
You encouraged the evil within our hearts and propregated these sins to our youths.
Using fear and force trying to silence any opposition or truth on the case against you.
I see now that I am never a "freeman" in America, because my free will and right to believe in a God who is above everything is taken.
If anyone speaks on God power, Healing or believes in the miracles still occuring everday, is imprisoned.
Is it so hard to let people have freedom of choice and beliefs, or is it better for you to fine and imprison believers.
You can make an example out of us.
The real bad example here is you America and all who have darkened the idea of a free nation UNDER God.
No matter what the wicked may try, they cannot win a war that is already won.
Any litigation that says I'm USA property is invalid, and at this point I would prefer to renounce it all.
Thing is I died in spirit, truth, and was baptized by the holy spirit and in water.
My old body is gone, I am a new creation.
You see God has and will make all things new, there is nothing God hasn't thought of, it is all apart of his plan.
I stand today as for years now on earth a citizen of Heaven a new creation with a new heart/soul certified by God almighty into a heavenly kingdom.
The old me that was owned by the state and run by the federation, he died.. he doesn't exist.
I am marked and this passport in my DNA allows me to live eternally through the grace of God.
My Body is His Temple, and our names in the book of life.
God is ready to accept anyone who chooses him.
He doesn't force anyone to worship him or do anything...
...That is true freedom and true justice.
If a God who is jealous for our attention and worship can still give us our free will.
WHY CAN'T THE USA OR ANY MAJOR COUNTRY RN
Truth is they don't want you free, dont want you to succeed and they dont love you.
I am a part of the Body of Christ, all those with me know where we are going.
It is to a kingdom that is truly loving, beautiful, and just.
The New Heaven and Earth will never fall and we will stand ready on the day of judgement.
Someone may have already posted about a similar idea, but if not: The paintings John commissioned should be made into prints as others have requested and then sold for the same price as the official duck stamps. I think they would have the potential to kill two birds (or more specifically, ducks) with one stone: Raising a lot of money for conservation and showing the judges why they were wrong to dismiss them as quickly as they did.
They could have printed their own stamps too
Wow if only you could have read other people's comments to see if it had already been mentioned 100 times.
It might make that point a little bit stronger if they are more expensive and still outsell the duck stamp
I would absolutely buy a print of the ducks judging the duck art contest. It's witty and really well done
They shouldn't have disqualified the Nintendo one. That one would have sold out in less than one minute.
Seeing the winning painting, I'm expecting it not to sell well. Who'd want that? I stand by my previous statement. The NES stamp would have sold out in less than one minute. Guess the judges don't care about raising money.
They could paint grasses over the letters and numbers and submit next year
Well, bidding for that one is currently at 10.9k so, yes it would have
@@tictacleia Duh, they obviously care only about ducks.
They should sell merchandise of it, that's how you really make money

So I checked the website and oh man- I'm so proud that this duck stamp art raised close to 100k. Duck with a Pearl went up to 16k. Glad that art made a positive impact on wildlife conservation.
"Ducks Judging The Duck Stamps" was honestly too good for the competition, they probably invented that stupid number rule just to keep that one from running away with the contest.
EDIT: I feel like this shouldn't be necessary, but this comment here that you just read is what we call a "joke." I do not truly believe that this number rule was invented specifically for the magnificent art I was referring to, but rather suggested such because I found it a humorous way in which to express my appreciation of the submission.
nope, they were made to stamps, who have numbers on them and thereby numbers on the original stamps were banned from the pictures to prevent confusion, its an actual problems in old stamps in the past....while i will point out, that the US is one of the WORSE stamp-nation to collect.
...all these damn liberty-statue, bells and FLAG stamps are a sickness, unique to your nation. the British stamps have just one horrible large design of stamps and they keep it in the same system for decades, so i will call it acceptable and its just one system, even dictatorships, like Franco-Spain or NS-Germany was able to just pic one design for one group of a stamp with the narcissistic leader on the stamp. they printed a lot, but they kept it simple
ONLY the fucking USA HAS to do fucking hundred non-similar, but same stamps motives on the market over just like 30 years of the same fucking flag. even for professional collectors, these stamps are TRASH and not worth the time to collect them.
Even your interesting Christmas pictures with gold and christian symbols were made to shit by your horrible glue-design, that remain to be the worse to remove, if you want to collect actual used American stamps in your collection, they will stick to the book and destroy the actual 1000 times more valuable book OR you put actual acid on the stamps to get the glue off, just to destroy the stamps in the process for the next years.
Im a collector of stamps from all over the world, even from not-UN accepted slum-nations in Southafrica, but the US-stamps are SHIT. I like the curved diagonal on the right side.
It is beautiful.
The artistry behind each of the paintings is breathtaking!!!!
Maybe it’s just me, but I think this might be the best absurd antics they’ve ever gotten themselves into.
The sheer number of people whose time was wasted because of this is amazing.
Four hours later and the “Duck Hunt” painting is already up to $20,000
An hour after that and all but the Feuding Artists are above $10k! Clearly no one cares about the depths of artistic competition.
At this point I don't think I could afford any of those paintings even if I wanted to. The lowest one is already above $3k
the highest is half a million now.
@@cclemonb1222 Nope. Top bid is $20k (for the Nintendo one, oddly enough.) "Duck Judges", my fave, is at $17k.
@@jpdemer5 why oddly? Its the combination of a Game-Theme and being a LastWeekTonight-Original. Of course the bids are high.
I wish they sold prints that duck hunt one, the duck judging, and duck with a Pearl earring are my favorites
I'm honestly surprised that they aren't. Hunt and Judging are honestly hilarious and could even make a fun little gift to the right person.
Yeah, this was only meant for the rich elites to participate in.
For shame they're not! I can't bid large numbers but I'd be happy to buy them all as prints!
yes, prints too!
Yeah, maybe make some merch because the bids on ebay are way too high for most people
this is a nice episode with no depression inducing reality. Simply nice reality.
I love the one with the ducks judging the contest. That is genius!
Laughing at these stamps on TikTok only to find out John Oliver was behind it
Duck hunt painting all the way. That is art, beauty, nostalgia and hilarity all wrapped up in one.
I would TOTALLY have that on my wall. Old wooden frame, Nintendo zapper sitting on the mantle. XD
Yes.. xD 10/10
And will only cost you 10K+
@@ace448
I was so disappointed when I checked the auction.
@@ianashmore9910 Me too, in a pinch I'd buy a print though.
I don't care what other people say but the painting - 'Duck Hunting the Hunter' was just plain awesome, especially the soul-piercing focus in the duck's eye.
This one, my friends, is straight one of my top 3 episodes of this year 😍😍😍 I haven’t had that much fun for a while those 5 paintings are absolutely GOLD ! (Yeah & it did speak much itself about the absolute killjoy of the judge panel 😂😂
It really is a damn shame that none of those were accepted, especially the Duck Hunt one. THAT is a work of art.
I think a rollout of copies of each would be great, too. Sell each for like $20. I'd happily buy all 5.
I would definitely buy a print at that price.
I want a print as well! I want everyone who visits my apartment to know how cultured I am :D
Or, go to a sporting goods store and buy a real duck stamp. Still raising money for conservation.
Surely they can print more than five!!
+1 Duck Hunt!
Only problem is... How would Nintendo handle it?
The Redhead Hunting the Hunter has a look in its eyes that says: "I'm going to kill this man. I'm going to enjoy it. And whether or not you'll ever admit it yourself, you will, too."
Hmmm. I think that look suggests, "I'm going to kill this man. I'm going to enjoy it. But only after he kills Mallard, my ex BF, whom I caught corkscrewing that tramp the redhead."
The duck looks just like the horse in "you're the first girl i brought here" meme
I never expected to hear a Mozart Horn concerto at the end of any TV show, but I'm sure glad it was on this one. #bestduckingmusic
"... because that duck. Is. SHREDDED." Also, Minnesota represent!
Honestly, those paintings are super charming. Duck Hunt for the nostalgia, Duck with the pearl Earing for the snoots, and Duck judges is just so cute.

Seriously John, you need to offer prints of those stamp entries on that website.
Yes please! I'll take 2 duck with earrings, 2 duck judging ducks and 1 nintendo dick hunt please!
I agree completely. I would definitely buy the one of ducks voting on the new stamp and hang in in my office next to my Terry Redlin print.
OMG, this amazing LWT features SO much Minnesota!!! The Hautman brothers live in Minnesota, and are mentioned in the movie "Fargo" (filmed largely in Minnesota) when Norm Gunderson tells Marge he's worried about how his painting will do in the stamp contest (he's entering a duck painting in an actual postage stamp contest, and gets his painting on the .02 stamp), and Rob McBroom ALSO lives in Minnesota, and is a well known personality in the local arts scene!! MINNESOTA REPRESENT!
Oh god! That duck with pearl earrings is DIVINE!
The winning painting was stunningly beautiful.
Shoutout MN too
No it was literally the same as last year and the year before and the year before. Thats why no one buys the ducking stamps
@@leiajiang7877 But...people _do_ buy them. And honestly, if a joke stamp won the contest, people who think it's making fun of their hobby could refuse to buy it, especially with John being a politically divisive figure.
@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou how the hell is he divisive? he even acknowledges both sides, and even that is divisive? sigh
@@jamirimaj6880 He obviously leans left. Don't play stupid.
I'm so relieved with how this turned out. My first thought when I saw duck stamps on last week tonight was "oh, no, it's gonna be a story of embezzlement and how none of the funds actually go to preservation"
People taking duck stamps seriously has to be one of the funniest things I've ever heard😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would’ve bought all of those paintings tbh. They are great, perfect amount of wit, satire, prose, and elegance.
This is the funny ass tomfoolery I miss in this show and hope there’s more of it, had me laughing for a good bit
Agreed! Feel like John has become a little darker with the pandemic

“That girl doesn’t even have any feathers! Or a beak, for that matter. What a waste of paint!”
@Elsse Ninis Stop spamming.. especially on vids that has nothing to do with music. Also put the title under the link you f*ckin baiter!
I freaking love all of the Last Week Tonight entries, they are glorious 😂
The ducks voting on the ducks painting is PERFECTION. That one is absolutely the best!
Damn, as of writing this message the current bids are valued at $60K for the entire set...
Well played, Mr. Oliver. Well played.
Now up to $70K
I legitimately love the Duck with the Pearl Earring. I’d absolutely buy a print of that.
SAME HERE
You could see it coming right from the beginning, but the delivery of "you need this years entry to be an absolute doozy" had so much mischievous glee, it was absolutely worth it.
I think I just got schooled on why Norm from “Fargo” was stressing so much about the duck painting…
That was unexpected, John
Living in Minnesota, the Duck Stamps always get a lot of coverage.
I've always wanted to see a Monet painting of a duck swimming among his Water Lilies.
I saw this in my recommended, and I thought, "Ugh. How are these "duck stamp" things some sort of huge problem in the United States somehow linked to racism, bad policies, and incompetent governance?"
I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case.
Well, at least until we eventually find out that Tim Taylor is a secret oil & gas lobbyist who advised the Trump administration to restrict Native Americans' access to national parks or something. FML, in this timeline that may actually be true.
Lol saaame
This was a nice divergence from the norm
Amazing how you were able to overcome all the racist propaganda programming you have suffered. Good job.
The duck stamp is truly the only decent thing America has left to offer.
@@greglloyd2377 Or their is still alot of racial targeting when your a minority and would know that if you actual faced it constantly instead of commenting on shit you don't know and telling people what you think they faced.
When he revealed that they had submitted three more paintings I lost my mind like I won the lottery
Me, an animal lover: That winning duck painting is beautiful.
Me, an artist: Duck With a Pearl Earring is clearly the best.
Me, a gamer: Give it to Duck Hunt 🤣
I love the Duck with a Pearl Earring.
that duck hunt, sooo nice!
Me, a silly person: That Duck Judging makes me giggle; what a way to start every day. Far better than dogs playing cards.

Although I'm convinced this segment *started* with the mu shu pancakes joke in a Chinese restaurant, the duck stamp is a really good thing to highlight. We buy the duck stamp every year, because it helps the wetlands AND it's way cooler looking than the weekly parking pass at the beach (but also gets you parking - worth the cost). Sales probably went down last year because less people went out to FWS sites due to COVID-19. We don't hunt, we just like old-timey Americana and we say buy the duck stamp! Support wildlife conservation!
Yeah, this is the first I’ve heard of this program.
This is a very good comment
There's also a Junior Duck Stamp contest. I was the state winner when I was a junior in high school. It was a great experience! It definitely helped spark my love for conservation.
There's a certain old-world comforting quality to classic sporting art. I don't actually have any on my walls, but I'm glad it's there. The painting that won the competition is very strong and deserved to win IMHO. Beautiful treatment of golden-hour light.
I participated in the Junior Duck Stump contest as a kid! The requirements really are very strict, but it's a cool event. Sometimes I think about trying again as an adult, but realistic paintings aren't really my thing.
i still LOVE this, thank you John and Staff Writers
Segment was so good they just had to add it.
