The "no numbers" rule actually makes sense. This art is meant to be put on stamps, which need to have meaningful numbers put on them, so numbers in the art could potentially be confusing.

"the Trump Administration required hunting equipment" I.....I don't know how to feel, like I should be mad but I am more stunned that the Trump government found such a niche aspect of government and NEEDED to just Trump it up
For those who also forgot this part, the Trump administration required that hunting imagery be displayed on the stamp. Roughly 5:30 if you want to skip
It’s so ridiculous. I think the only reason for that requirement was because some Trump official didn’t like that conservationists also collected the stamps and wanted a petty way to spite them.
yeah, good lord that creeped me tf out. gotta have hunting stuff in a duck habitat saving stamp? that's not the creepy part tho- how many other random obscure corners of our vast federal government structures, rules, and laws did he reach in and manipulate? his sick and twisted mark on our democracy might pop up for decades to come. maybe that was his legacy goal.
If you take a broader view of it, It's actually a surprisingly cunning plan. First off, you drive away conservationists by distorting the imagery, reducing funding for conservation efforts (something Trump is against) while still appealing to his rootin' tootin gunslinging voting base who wouldn't see this as a negative. As part of a broader plan to attack conservation efforts, it's surprisingly sophisticated and insidious, if this is the intent.
@@ValleysOfRain I'm a little upset that you are very likely correct. I guess while Trump would never have this level of intrigue, I should be more watchful for all the underlings who might actually be closer to the evil side of the meter. Hopefully that requirement has been or will be removed.

Declaration of Heavenly Citizenship I am a citizen of heaven and God's Kingdom, I am born into a Nation that wont be shaken. God's name is written everywhere throughout his creation, before we are conceived he knows us and called us his own. I am bound by God laws, his love and perfect justice has always existed. I have free will to choose to accept God as my king or reject him completely. Either way he accepts my decision and acts accordingly. I have chosen to serve him since I was an adolescent, although my actions didn't always convey that message. Still God hasn't shut me down, given up on me, or condemned me for my mistakes. That is true justice, and that is a just King. When I was born a United States citizen it was a different story entirely. My birth certificate tied me to this country and established me as their property. I was led to believe that I had freedom here, that our whole Nation fought for our rights to religion, persecution, and discriminations. This free will / freedom that I thought as a kid " I am so blessed to live in a country like this." Has deteriorated, been criminalized and deplatformed. I have no problems with common sense laws (pretty much summed up by the 10 commandments)... or one Love your neighbor. Although when the laws started to not make sense and conflict with God's law, that is when enough is enough. I have done all I can do to follow the laws in this country and support the union that I pledged allegiance too. For a long time you had us fooled and full of pride in America, when it was the time for humility. You encouraged the evil within our hearts and propregated these sins to our youths. Using fear and force trying to silence any opposition or truth on the case against you. I see now that I am never a "freeman" in America, because my free will and right to believe in a God who is above everything is taken. If anyone speaks on God power, Healing or believes in the miracles still occuring everday, is imprisoned. Is it so hard to let people have freedom of choice and beliefs, or is it better for you to fine and imprison believers. You can make an example out of us. The real bad example here is you America and all who have darkened the idea of a free nation UNDER God. No matter what the wicked may try, they cannot win a war that is already won. Any litigation that says I'm USA property is invalid, and at this point I would prefer to renounce it all. Thing is I died in spirit, truth, and was baptized by the holy spirit and in water. My old body is gone, I am a new creation. You see God has and will make all things new, there is nothing God hasn't thought of, it is all apart of his plan. I stand today as for years now on earth a citizen of Heaven a new creation with a new heart/soul certified by God almighty into a heavenly kingdom. The old me that was owned by the state and run by the federation, he died.. he doesn't exist. I am marked and this passport in my DNA allows me to live eternally through the grace of God. My Body is His Temple, and our names in the book of life. God is ready to accept anyone who chooses him. He doesn't force anyone to worship him or do anything... ...That is true freedom and true justice. If a God who is jealous for our attention and worship can still give us our free will. WHY CAN'T THE USA OR ANY MAJOR COUNTRY RN Truth is they don't want you free, dont want you to succeed and they dont love you. I am a part of the Body of Christ, all those with me know where we are going. It is to a kingdom that is truly loving, beautiful, and just. The New Heaven and Earth will never fall and we will stand ready on the day of judgement.
The ducks judging the duck stamp contest is my favorite. The execution, the subtle jab at the duck stamp judges.. okay it wasn't subte at all... endeared it to me immediately. The fact that all the numbers are 555, which everyone knows is a fake number, it's just icing on the cake.
It's a shame they used numbers instead of stars or something so they could have qualified it. I think it was easily the most "acceptable" print they had. It made it's commentary, but wasn't aesthetically jarring in the process. I'd like to think it would have made it to the next round, but I'm probably wrong.
@@calladeem240, i think the judges knew they were being trolled and one thing I have learnt over the years, is that these sorts of judges have no sense of humour.
Could be... but I couldn't help but thinking how easy it would be for them to airbrush out any offending or confusing elements (numbers / letters / pearl earrings) if a painting were otherwise excellent.
So I checked the website and oh man- I'm so proud that this duck stamp art raised close to 100k. Duck with a Pearl went up to 16k. Glad that art made a positive impact on wildlife conservation.
I mean... Right click->Save image as->Print. Then just make a donation yourself. Ethically, it's a toss-up, but you can feel better if you made the donation.
70k isn't even enough for one salary of some clerk. Wetland conservation needs government policies worth many millions paid by the taxes on the wealthiest, not random microscopic donations to fill a tv show episode
@@Kosmanen 1.1 billion dollar "since 1944" -> resulting in about 14 million per year. Which still sounds like a big number, but after breaking it down to the amount of wetlands to protect, it's propably not much.
@@NJ-wb1cz that is absolutely true, but you can't deny the incremental change this brings. Aside from the actual money, the attention the stamps get through LWT is fairly substantial. Even if its unlikely, the discourse on conservation this brings is still beneficial.
As a waterfowler and someone that has purchased a duck stamp every year for 20 years, I sincerely hope you guys do this every year!!! You guys raised a ton of money!
"The Duck With The Pearl Earring" will be getting a fresh film adaptation unto itself, and Scarlet Johansson will be returning to play the lead role once again. Johansson feels confident she can adequately portray a duck.
It seems quite formulaic, like rehashed landscape art you see sold on sidewalks I guess those guys just found what works for judges and repeat it, stuffing their paintings with cool looking things
Someone may have already posted about a similar idea, but if not: The paintings John commissioned should be made into prints as others have requested and then sold for the same price as the official duck stamps. I think they would have the potential to kill two birds (or more specifically, ducks) with one stone: Raising a lot of money for conservation and showing the judges why they were wrong to dismiss them as quickly as they did.
Or, at least, postcards. I would pay $100 for all five postcards or $100 for individual posters. Surely, such sales would allow you to collect even more money for conservation.
@@leiajiang7877 But...people _do_ buy them. And honestly, if a joke stamp won the contest, people who think it's making fun of their hobby could refuse to buy it, especially with John being a politically divisive figure.
It really is a damn shame that none of those were accepted, especially the Duck Hunt one. THAT is a work of art. I think a rollout of copies of each would be great, too. Sell each for like $20. I'd happily buy all 5.
Seeing the winning painting, I'm expecting it not to sell well. Who'd want that? I stand by my previous statement. The NES stamp would have sold out in less than one minute. Guess the judges don't care about raising money.
"Ducks Judging The Duck Stamps" was honestly too good for the competition, they probably invented that stupid number rule just to keep that one from running away with the contest. EDIT: I feel like this shouldn't be necessary, but this comment here that you just read is what we call a "joke." I do not truly believe that this number rule was invented specifically for the magnificent art I was referring to, but rather suggested such because I found it a humorous way in which to express my appreciation of the submission.

Even your interesting Christmas pictures with gold and christian symbols were made to shit by your horrible glue-design, that remain to be the worse to remove, if you want to collect actual used American stamps in your collection, they will stick to the book and destroy the actual 1000 times more valuable book OR you put actual acid on the stamps to get the glue off, just to destroy the stamps in the process for the next years. Thank you for having fun and supporting a great conservation cause. LWT is welcome in my duck blind anytime. Cheers on over $75k raised for the duck stamp program and publicity you couldn't buy. You. are. legends.
The world isn‘t shitty. You just are depressed and have a warped view of the world. Stop consuming news and you will be much, much happier. Trust me. I used to be depressed too. Then I stopped consuming news completely. Changed my life. I‘m not watching any Late Night Shows either anymore. Except Conan (because he rarely talks about current events) and John Oliver, but only innocent topics like this one.
Why? They were deliberately bad-faith attempts to mess with another group's fun. This didn't even feel like trolling to me, just bullying. What harm was this group causing, what problems were they creating, what issues are involved here? It's just a weird community with weird rules that's not hurting anyone...
@@Wraithfighter I don't see any bad faith here and as 3 of the 5 paintings were qualified, they seemingly didn't even break the formal rules, while still of course not being what the jury is looking for. Sure, the paintings are humours and maybe a bit mocking, but not only not in an attacking or insulting way, but for an obviously good reason: Because, as it stands, this is not only a weird little group with their own rules, this is indeed a crucial part of the US' wetland conservation effort and as far as I've understood an official part of federal hunting regulations. Adding those more humours approaches to the contest even without the intend of actually winning does serve the purpose of bringing it to a larger audience's attention (as many of Oliver's stunts), who wouldn't have cared otherwise/without something interesting and entertaining to the general masses going on. This of course aims at (and will probably succeed) increasing sales of duck stamps and therfore the money raised for its conservation purposes. So, there is not only no actual harm, attack or criticism coming from Oliver's act, but this good faith mocking actually even helps their very course while obviously never expecting to win/influence the actual contest . The only thing one might consider insulting without taking things way too serious is the portrait of the two rival artists, as it aims at actual people and not just.... you know, ducks , but as they mock and insult each other quite publicly, I would consider it fair game. Though I see how one could disagree there.
That's why this is one of my favorites. I can't be the only one that appreciates his entertaining hard work but is also annoyed that every week he focuses that hard work into trying to make people think the world is a terrible place and we're all screwed unless we vote or donate for whatever he tells us to. He's brilliant but incredibly biased and one-sided on the aisle.
@Anthony Riordan Wait until you realize this is doing the same thing, by giving a call to action of bidding/buying more duck stamps. You probably politically agree more with animal conservation than the other topics though.
The Redhead Hunting the Hunter has a look in its eyes that says: "I'm going to kill this man. I'm going to enjoy it. And whether or not you'll ever admit it yourself, you will, too."
Hmmm. I think that look suggests, "I'm going to kill this man. I'm going to enjoy it. But only after he kills Mallard, my ex BF, whom I caught corkscrewing that tramp the redhead."
Living in Minnesota, the Duck Stamps always get a lot of coverage. I've always wanted to see a Monet painting of a duck swimming among his Water Lilies.
Please John, I beg you, keep this thing going for as long as possible. I'm sure you could create an entire spin off series. You and your team have created something special 🙀
my grandpa won a few duck stamp competitions, my family has one of the paintings in our living room and it looks like it could be a photograph but the detail is just insane
I saw this in my recommended, and I thought, "Ugh. How are these "duck stamp" things some sort of huge problem in the United States somehow linked to racism, bad policies, and incompetent governance?" I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case.
Well, at least until we eventually find out that Tim Taylor is a secret oil & gas lobbyist who advised the Trump administration to restrict Native Americans' access to national parks or something. FML, in this timeline that may actually be true.
@@greglloyd2377 Or their is still alot of racial targeting when your a minority and would know that if you actual faced it constantly instead of commenting on shit you don't know and telling people what you think they faced.
I was once a judge for Indiana's duck stamp contest. It was a fun expirence and there was quite a few amazing duck drawing thete as well. Though none had a pearl ear ring.
Although I'm convinced this segment *started* with the mu shu pancakes joke in a Chinese restaurant, the duck stamp is a really good thing to highlight. We buy the duck stamp every year, because it helps the wetlands AND it's way cooler looking than the weekly parking pass at the beach (but also gets you parking - worth the cost). Sales probably went down last year because less people went out to FWS sites due to COVID-19. We don't hunt, we just like old-timey Americana and we say buy the duck stamp! Support wildlife conservation!
There's also a Junior Duck Stamp contest. I was the state winner when I was a junior in high school. It was a great experience! It definitely helped spark my love for conservation.
There's a certain old-world comforting quality to classic sporting art. I don't actually have any on my walls, but I'm glad it's there. The painting that won the competition is very strong and deserved to win IMHO. Beautiful treatment of golden-hour light.

Im a cultured duck art lover and I want them all except the last one. They are really very good paintings. Even the duck hunt one is pretty cool. Duck with the pearl earing is one of my new favorite paintings period.
In resume, in this segment we went through: - Duck stamps -> Permissions for hunting -> Wetland conservation finances -> artistry -> Painter's rivalry -> Barack Obama Birthers conspiracy theories -> Painting applications for the next year's Duck Stamp -> Call for help for conservatism - > John Oliver's monthly deranged (and wonderful) idea (the painting) -> Satirical Humor -> Second John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the second painting) -> Third John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the three paintings!....), with a side criticism of Dutch Golden Age art. -> Ominous rant! -> final John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the last painting) -> Winner of the Duck stamp painting -> Last Week's Tonight Auction, in favor of the Federal Duck Stamp Program (with a background of a relaxing oboe concert) 😁😁😁 Isn't Last Week Tonight a hoot, or what?!
You too missed the part where the Trump administration found time in their scheduled murdering and torture of humans to add a requirement of duck-murdering implements or scenes included into paintings of ducks, commissioned as a part of a program for protecting the living habitat of ducks.

I am a citizen of heaven and God's Kingdom, I am born into a Nation that wont be shaken.

Yes, definitely the Snoop Duck one!
@@Wraithfighter you clearly are not fun at parties…
@@Wraithfighter I don't see any bad faith here and as 3 of the 5 paintings were qualified, they seemingly didn't even break the formal rules, while still of course not being what the jury is looking for. Sure, the paintings are humours and maybe a bit mocking, but not only not in an attacking or insulting way, but for an obviously good reason:
Because, as it stands, this is not only a weird little group with their own rules, this is indeed a crucial part of the US' wetland conservation effort and as far as I've understood an official part of federal hunting regulations.
@@channingdeadnight The auction description specifically notes that the copyrights are retained by Last Week's production company, so hopefully it will happen.
only 20K on ebay right now!
You and your team are media geniuses , it's so refreshing to see a group a great minds constantly pushing the envelope for good , thank you 🌟
The duck judge one was so good if it was just slightly edited it would have won
Im a cultured duck art lover and I want them all except the last one. They are really very good paintings. Even the duck hunt one is pretty cool. Duck with the pearl earing is one of my new favorite paintings period.
Damn, as of writing this message the current bids are valued at $60K for the entire set...
Well played, Mr. Oliver. Well played.
Now up to $70K
In resume, in this segment we went through:
- Duck stamps -> Permissions for hunting -> Wetland conservation finances -> artistry -> Painter's rivalry -> Barack Obama Birthers conspiracy theories -> Painting applications for the next year's Duck Stamp -> Call for help for conservatism - > John Oliver's monthly deranged (and wonderful) idea (the painting) -> Satirical Humor -> Second John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the second painting) -> Third John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the three paintings!....), with a side criticism of Dutch Golden Age art. -> Ominous rant! -> final John Oliver's monthly deranged idea (the last painting) -> Winner of the Duck stamp painting -> Last Week's Tonight Auction, in favor of the Federal Duck Stamp Program (with a background of a relaxing oboe concert)
😁😁😁
Isn't Last Week Tonight a hoot, or what?!
You too missed the part where the Trump administration found time in their scheduled murdering and torture of humans to add a requirement of duck-murdering implements or scenes included into paintings of ducks, commissioned as a part of a program for protecting the living habitat of ducks.
It's not a hoot, it's a *H O N K*
As of now, the duck painting auction is pulling in over 70 thousand dollars!!! You, John, you are a **LEGEND!!!**
The artistry behind each of the paintings is breathtaking!!!!
I absolutely love the fact that "Last Week Tonight's" you tube channel is consistently racking up new subscriber numbers each day!!!! More and More people need to learn from this gem of a Toucan.🙌👌
As someone who currently works for the US Fish & Wildlife Service, I am fucking crying of laughter from this episode 😂😂😂
Thank you John Oliver for the well needed laugh 😂😂😂
I just took pictures of Fish and Wildlife in Lake Ontario. I thought the boat was Coast Guard, but it was F&W. I don't think I've ever seen them in our area before. I was surprised.
Maaaan, I wish John credited the other artists for the paintings he featured. My art mentor Eric Joyner painted the duck hunt one.
It was an awesome painting!
He did in the ebay listing. I'm sure it's hard to balance those things in a short clip like this
The end credits mentioned the artists.
Also, the Duck Hunt one is magnificent. Send my regards!
I like the curved diagonal on the right side.
It is beautiful.
I didn’t even know what a duck stamp was 10 minutes ago and I’m literally laughing harder than I ever have at a John Oliver episode 🤣🤣🤣
Was really hoping he was going to announce they printed there own stamps anyways. Would have bought so many of them if he did.
That's what I was expecting, too. I'd quickly buy the duck hunting a hunter stamp. I hope they'll do it anyway.
yup, would 100% buy the duck hunter stamp. or if they made it a poster or something, I can't bid on the thing, it's up to 20k already
Agreed. I'd buy a print of the duck with a rifle and the girl duck.
You can't just print your own stamps, which is why you have to buy them and they can be used to send letters. They have value, printing your own is akin to printing counterfeit money.
@@Melesniannon I was thinking more along the lines of poster-sized prints. Attempting to affix that to an envelope would be an exercise in futility. For starters your tongue would dry out licking the back...
I'm so relieved with how this turned out. My first thought when I saw duck stamps on last week tonight was "oh, no, it's gonna be a story of embezzlement and how none of the funds actually go to preservation"
Me, an animal lover: That winning duck painting is beautiful.
Me, an artist: Duck With a Pearl Earring is clearly the best.
Me, a gamer: Give it to Duck Hunt 🤣
I love the Duck with a Pearl Earring.
that duck hunt, sooo nice!
Me, a silly person: That Duck Judging makes me giggle; what a way to start every day. Far better than dogs playing cards.

A little disappointed by the lack of a "Ducks Playing Poker" entry.
It’s refreshing to see some positive episode, the last year and a half where brutal!
I'd buy a print of the duck with the pearl earring for my bathroom.

not gonna lie, I would actually bid on the pearl earring one if I had any money
that looks amazing
Currently selling for 17,5 grand so it's kind of out of reach for most of us now. I don't think many people have the kind of money to just spend 15k+ on a joke.
this is a nice episode with no depression inducing reality. Simply nice reality.
I did not expect this clip but absolutely needed it. I'm looking forward to 1045 more entries next year
Laughing at these stamps on TikTok only to find out John Oliver was behind it
Listen, we all knew from the moment he said there was a contest that he was going to have entered it. But the submissions still knocked my socks off. I legit want the Duck Hunt one, I grew up on the Super Nintendo
While your logic comes out sound, we can tell you were a SNES kid cause Duck Hunt was on NES.
@@XBFNoodles first game I ever played. and Mario.
@@casjean8904 Same :)
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley then I met Zelda and I was lost. now truly enjoying BoTW.
@@casjean8904 I never played the original Zelda games. First one I played...which now that I think about it, is the only one if going by game completion, and that was Link to the Past on SNES. I did play Zelda and the Minish Cap a tiny bit but don't ask me about the plot and as I rarely see it mentioned, I'm guessing it played a very tiny role in the overall Zelda lore, lol.
But after the NES, we had a period of an extended borrowing of a friend's N64 so we didn't get a lot of games for it and after that, we became a PlayStation family (which I don't regret at all), so I've not had a chance to play another Zelda game. I've seen a good walkthrough of BotW though and the game was beautiful and looked really fun. Hoping to have a Switch soon so I can play the next game.
'The Duck with a Pearl Earring' was actually really good.
Rob is absolutely an energy vampire like Colin in What We Do In The Shadows
Every year, Rob stalks the gathering of duck painting enthusiasts, his mere presence eliciting anxiety and torment to rock throughout the room. What they don’t realize is that with each muttered, “This fucking guys...” and “Is he really..?”, his power grows, and his life is extended, securing Rob’s place to continue is reign of terror over all duck stamp enthusiasts for all time!
Love that show
I literally just finished catching up on that show and came and saw this on RUclips. But either way, good show. I agree.
The Duck with the Pearl earring really is stunning.
Anyone can Vermeerly see that
12k at the moment
I like this show. It brings me joy in a dark, dark world.
This one, my friends, is straight one of my top 3 episodes of this year 😍😍😍 I haven’t had that much fun for a while those 5 paintings are absolutely GOLD ! (Yeah & it did speak much itself about the absolute killjoy of the judge panel 😂😂
