      I believe so yes, ours is a cellular model, but we don’t have a sim, it is just connected to wifi in the van or could be a hotspot from your phone, but I think I needs to be cellular to pick up the gps position although I don’t have a wifi only version to test, but several years ago I know it didn’t work wifi only models

    • @LukeHames
      @LukeHames  3 года назад +2

      As far as I am aware you need a cellular ipad so it will pick up the location, it is the antennas that make the gps work, then you can still tether from your phone or something like for internet. Not able to confirm this as I don’t have a new model ipad with only WiFi, but the ipad mini’s where the same, WiFi only would not work for navigation, but cellular did. Hope this helps.

    • @LukeHames
      @LukeHames  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, I would recommend getting the cellular version, you don’t need to have a sim or plan for it, it can run of WiFi or a hotspot, but I think it needs the cellular antennas for the GPS to work, at least that is true of the older iPads, and currently I do not have a WiFi only ipad to check so cannot guarantee navigation will work without the cellular version. Hope this helps, and I need to do an update to this video as there are now so many new updates that make the ipad even better as an in car option.

      John Crisp sorry, I should have included that! I basically took a couple of pieces of wood and screwed them into a standard single din metal cage that comes with any stereo. We were then also fortunate to have a pen/coin holder on the dash that comes off and allowed me to screw through the top of the dash to really secure it without leaving screw holes in the top of dash. Then I just screwed the iPad case to the wood 👍

    great video, but the speaker adapter link isn't working anymore - can you update?
    Am I right in thinking that the cars speaker connections go into the adapter and then a 3.5mm jack from the adapter to the iPad?

    • @LukeHames
      @LukeHames  2 года назад

      No worries, I will search for the closest newer model and update.
      And you have a few options, in this van it didn’t have a working stereo, so we chose to put in a 5.1 surround system, and we hooked that up with the ipad for when we drove, so the iPad connected to the adaptor via Bluetooth, then from the bluetooth adaptor it was a 3.5mm cable to the surround system amp. If you have a car stereo with a 3.5mm input then I would recommend using one of these bluetooth adaptors and it will be the neatest and best sound quality option. Alternatively, you can just get a car stereo with bluetooth built in for less than £40 these days, and that saves the need for the adaptor.
      But let me know your setup and what you want to achieve and I can give you my opinion and share any links. We now have another van and have done something completely different, but still using the iPad, so I will be sharing a video on that soon.

    "Your blue tooth device was connected successfully" ??
    I have a different model then yours , mine is the T11 with volume knob but the female voice is kinda annoying.
    Nice to see the way you wired it up using the line in jack on the BT adapter and speakers using a invertor , I would of never thought of that.

    • @LukeHames

      I personally don’t think you can get anything better! Between the likes of Apple Maps, Google Maps and other things like Magic Earth & Waze etc... you can find a navigation app that suits you best. They are all super accurate, and all a million times better at searching for destinations, points of interest etc... that any factory nav system I have used. 👍 At the end of the day, most cars now come with apple car play / andriod auto, and that used the same nav apps from your phone, an ipad is a more powerful version of your iphone and has a bigger screen so perfect! 👌

      Hi Austin, what car/van are you trying to put it in? You might not have to take the stereo out, and if you have a stereo with blutooth or aux in then it could be easier to leave it in and use it to control the sound? In our case the stereo was faulty so we took it out and then used the single din slot to mount the wood that the iPad case then screws into, I just used 4 screws and screwed through the ipad case in to the wood. Hope this helps, if you need more information or help, drop me a message or add me on instagram or whatever is easier, happy to find a way to make it work in your car/van if it is different to ours! 👍🚎

      @steveaustinhurst 4 года назад +1

      Luke Hames Oh that makes more sense now. I have a 1994 Buick Roadmaster station wagon and was wanting to upgrade my stereo. I been trying to decide if I should purchase an Apple CarPlay radio or just use my iPad. My only question now is, if you took took your stereo out because it was faulty, how are you getting your iPad to play through the cars speakers?

    • @LukeHames
      @LukeHames  4 года назад

      Nice motor! I would say that depends on how good your speakers are, or how good you want the sound quality to be, if you get a car play enabled stereo it will give you most of the functions, but without an amp and maybe sub your sound quality will only be as good as the speakers in the car, if they are the original’s from 94’ I would assume not great. You can see in the video that I ran a 5.1 cinema surround system for our speakers and series wired the front L & R speakers into it as they are well placed for when we are driving. But if you just want to have the functionality of the ipad, you can wire it into your head unit or buy a cheaper bluetooth head unit and that can power your car speakers. Just depends what sort of quality or end result you are looking for.

      Sorry I wasn’t clear, the ipad is connected to a magnetic ipad case, that case is screwed into some wood that slides into a standard single or double din stereo slot. I think I then explained how the rest of it works either into a bluetooth adaptor then into the stereo or a stereo that has bluetooth connected already. I thought that physical instal part would vary massively depending on components and vehicle, that is why I spent more time or how the rest of the instal works.

      I have the 4G sim in a TPLink 4G router, this is so we can all connect our phones and laptops etc... to it as well, it has a DC 12v power supply so very easy to run in a car/van. However, if the only thing you need the connection for is the iPad then for sure, skip the router part. Ours is a camper so when we are not driving it is great to have normal wifi. And yes, I think I have a link in the description to the case that I used, it was a cheaper amazon version of the folio case, and you just cut the front cover off. The magnets are super strong, and I have done the same in our new van and not once has it ever fallen or moved while driving.

      @@LukeHames That sounds interesting, I wonder why you did not just put the sim into the iPad altogether? I wonder what model it is and what cellular technology it supports. I assume in your camper that you have a 110v plug that you can plug the router into if you need to charge it. What is the exact listing of the amazon folio case so that I can potentially consider it, along with what stand did you use so I can look into this. I would like to know so I can do this for my own car as well. Want to see how fast I am driving in kilometers per hour while the car displays miles per hour on the widgets screen on the dashboard’s center. Did you ever use any speedometer apps for your iPad at the same time?

    Don't have it permanently commected. You will lose battery capacity after some time. It happen to me with tablet.

      Fibra thanks for the feedback! This is not true with iPads though, in fact the more you use them while plugged in the less battery cycles it will use so it will be better for the battery. But other tablets laptops like you say can actually ruin the battery if left plugged in 👍

      Well, it has nothing to do with ipads. Lithium batteries does not like to stay topped up for prolonged periods of time. In order to conserve them, they are tippically charged to 60%. In fact, not exceeding 80% significally increase battery life. Does ipad have the option to stop the charging at 60% while staying plugged in?

    It's a wooden bracket he made. He doesn't go into further detail about this bracket, but essentially he simply screwed a iPad case into a wooden bracket. You just saved yourself 8 minutes of him showing you how to use an iPad, and then 2 more minutes talking about a bluetooth receiver and some other speakers he has in his van.

      I hope you liked the video? I tried to cover the install/how to use an ipad in your car van, the wooden bracket works in my situation, but might not in your car so I didn’t want to spend too much time on the bracket as is is not universal so to speak. But hopefully the idea of the magnetic case and a way to connect it to a standard single or double din slot will help.
