I heard James say the impetus for The Unforgiven was to take the "soft verse and heavy chorus" dynamic that you hear in basically every song across all genres and flip it on its head. My story is somewhat similar. I first heard songs from the Black Album in early 1999, eight years after it's creation. As a newly loved ECW fan at the time, Enter Sandman was the first. However, when I heard Wherever I may Roam and then Nothing Else Matters, I was sold! Long live metal at whatever pace.
People hate change, but Metallica evolved and the black album was a new sound and rythme but the songs were still very personal and gave the band a new depth of music.
People hate AC/DC for not changing their music style at all, people hate Metallica for changing their music style too much What's the mother-bear in this situation?
The way the drums sit back in this song and how the snare hit is just ever so slightly behind the beat just makes the whole thing for me. People can say what they like about Lars but this song was played with exceptional feel. And all recorded analog to tape back then, no moving things around a millisecond at a time like you can do today when recording music.
@@adampennington8954 Lars is all dynamics and groove over technicality that’s why he gets so much hate… he serves the song instead of showing out and it’s a huge reason for Metallica’s success.. The dude helped take Metal and metal drumming to entirely different heights with their first 4 albums, then realized himself that he’d reached the limits of his playing ability, he’s admitted this himself, he knows he’s not the greatest drummer when it comes to skill and ability, but creatively and songwriting ability, he’s leaps and bounds ahead of the majority of drummers out there
This was their 5th studio album, "Metallica" AKA " The Black Album". The band began in '81. This record was done in '91. "Nothing Else Matters" is on the same record. And there are thrashy songs on it, too. And James got sober in 2001. P.S. I love how they did the opposite with an aggressive verse, then a soft chorus, which is not their normal. Thanks for the reaction!
5:00 good call Dave. This and Nothing Else Matters were both on their self titled album as the two songs that weren't super heavy metal. Along with Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Of Wolf and Man, and other classics, it was really the album that truly brought them into the mainstream.
The great thing about Metallica is, everyone loves the songs that they were introduced to no matter what stage they were in, and (though some hate to admit it) they atleast like the songs outside that stage. I can throw on And Justice for All..., sit back and let it play all the way through without even a second thought about which song on this album I like or want to skip. I can do that with a few other albums also. Even though I shunned the newest stage of Metallica for the longest time, I still found myself enjoying some of it. I might not sit down with the album on a full playthrough, but its good.
Alot of the "Trues" the Thrash metal fans got off the Metallica train when the "Black Album" was released. But the album sold 18 million copies in the United States alone. They obviously made the right decision to become more radio friendly. They were getting older they weren't quite as pissed off as they were in their 20's. Who is as pissed as they were in their 20's?
What changed was the death of Cliff Burton. Burton was a music theory student and added classical music theory to the metal they played. He died during the Master of Puppets tour while the band was writing And Justice For All.
I love the new and old stuff from Metallica. It shows how versatile they are and I love that I can listen to them on shuffle and get a good variety of sounds.
Something about this video stuck with me since I was a kid. The whole child to old man aspect. This was when Metallica first changed styles. Diehard fans of old hated it for the most part, many others say it's their best album. After this album they all cut their hair, and conformed so they could get the big money. Became much more "pop" radio friendly. Every once and a while they put out a song that reminds you who they were in the 80's Fun Fact: Metallica had one of the best base players of all time in Cliff Burton. After his passing when finding a replacement they tried out Les Claypool of Primus (prior to primus) Les turned it down because he felt their styles were too far apart.
One of the greatest concerts ever captured on film… and Metallica getting into peak God status.. from Puppets to Garage Inc, their sound, James vocals, their stage energy, presence and confidence were at levels most can only dream about… that Seattle concert is a masterclass on how to absolutely own a crowd and show everyone else how to do it and why they are the top dogs
Metallica does music their way, they don't let producers have much impact. They approached Bob for the recording part, not music making one, bcuz they liked the sound of his albums, so the slowdown was their intention. In the process though Bob did suggest a couple of tweaks and some of them worked out very well, ie he suggested a slower tempo for Sad but true, which is the grooviest tune on the album, and he also pushed Kirk to his limit as far as his solo for The unforgiven, which is well documented on RUclips
