In the song; he's old and tired now, he's waiting to die after never realizing himself. That's why the song is bitter but not too aggresive.

I cried the first time actually read the lyrics along with the song. James Hetfield is such a thoughtful writer. Along with so many other songs, the meaning is open ended and is up to your own personal interpretation.

      Interesting angle

    • @AtlasGuitar
      @AtlasGuitar 6 лет назад +1

Although that's a cool angle, I'd say that the third is the one that is truly not forgiving himself. Almost revealing that in the first two he was mistaken in who he couldn't forgive. So perhaps that interpretation was true once the trilogy came to an end.

I love watching you jam out to this one, and it's funny how strongly you feel about the song. In my mind this song demonstrates how we are all placed into a set of expectations and cultural norms, that can often feel like a cage or a prison. We all (ideally) need to break out at some point of our lives, and some people can never manage to do so. Perhaps it's about living someone else' life rather than your own, with the natural consequences of sadness or regret. Either way, this set of themes resonate with so many people on a level that is deeply personal.

I can’t believe that! I think the melodic structure does really fit the meaning of the song, it has those mellow and introspective choruses where he kind of gets locked into his own thoughts of pain, but then it goes into the verses where he sings more angry and the whole music goes more violent, representing the angst and anger of this man. It’s a damn well written song lyrically and musically-wise

thanks guys, really enjoying the channel :) a thought on the unforgiven, Hetfield is a big fan of Ennio Morricone who did the scores for the old Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns, to be honest my only proof for this is that before they go onstage at a concert they always play a piece from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly called The Ecastasy Of Gold and i get the feeling Hetfield considers, or at least considered, himself kind of a "man with no name" type character, especially in the songs from the Black Album, but the Morricone influences permeate through a lot of their albums.

She never said it was a bad song or even that she didn’t like it... i understand her thought that the message didn’t necessarily go with the music, even as fantastic said music may be. I love watching you two. I have watched so many people react to videos but they monetize the videos so they are constantly pausing the song which drives me nuts. Vin being the fan of the music, introducing Sori to this music and explaining the meaning behind it is refreshing to see and then discussing the lyrics, which I'll be honest as big of a fan of Metallica, I really haven't analyzed the lyrics. It's nice to sit here after all these years with with you two and listen to the music, enjoy it and analyze the lyrics. It's also nice to see people that are new to metal/hard rock, that normally wouldn't be interested in this type of music, take a look at the music and see there is a story behind the lyrics. That opens up a whole new world and the song is no longer noise to those who are not metal fans.
Metallica is very good at composing music that matches the emotion of the song. I know Vin had to explain this to Sori for this song. Unforgiven is actually a sad song which is true. You struggle all your life to please people that you love and that love is never returned. You become bitter and then no longer care. That's sad to me and I relate to this in my own personal life.

The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family.
He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man.

Yeah, a can understand the bitter old man concept lol. I do see beauty around me, in my son's eyes. Purity in him and I always wake up to another day with new choice's to improve my life -but I understand the mental age thing. I just see hope in my son and beauty in a still sky on a good day. Totally agree with you.

Hugely impressed by your in depth dissection of the music after your initial listening, including the lyrics too! For your underground series, I cannot recommend Insomnium enough as their lyrics are pretty amazing imo, if you could check out The Last Statement by them, that would be awesome! Hugely unknown song and they deserved to be recognised imo! New Sub here!

It's actually not a truck at the start of the song. It's a horn but played backwards from the good, the bad and the ugly I believe

This song was written so long ago, i can't even fashion what James was thinking when he wrote it. I listened to it today after seeing some posts from a few years ago. And this is only my interpretation of how i hear the lyrics. Cops are trusted in the community, they serve, and they do some dumb shit. Stereotyping. Being labeled. Some of the Blue Law label a man just for fitting a description, and the man just trying to say, hey I've done no wrong. Tensions = Outcome= Unforgiven. That's just the way I interpret it now. I was thinking about the damn movie when I was in my 20's, and how well it fit with the concept of the movie. Remember Ned. Cheers!

I have been a Metallica fan for years, but or some reason, this time, the lyrics 'to die regretfully, that old man her is me' really stood out this time, and this is the shit that makes Metallica great! they find stuff that hits home better than other bands

Great reaction as always. Metallica definitely are one of those bands that seem to attract all type of people. If I was Vin, I'd show her some Danzig. Hell, show her songs like: Twist of Cain, Anything, Cantspeak, Going Down To Die, and/or Let It Be Captured.

Top Breakdown. In all major socializing forces you will find an underlying movement to gain and maintain power through the use of words. From witch doctor to priest to bureaucrat to businessman it is all the same. A governed populace must be conditioned to accept power-words as actual things, to confuse the symbolized system with the tangible universe. In the maintenence of such a power structure, certain symbols are kept out of the reach of common understanding - symbols such as those dealing with economic manipulation or those which define the local definition of sanity. Symbol-secrecy of this form leads to the development of fragmented sub-languages, each being a signal that its users are gaining some form of power. Like you were saying about even anarchists have some sort of rules, which are based on words which they collectively think and agree (quite often this is unspoken agreement) mean a certain thing. Of course this then boots the door wide open for unscrupulous humans to manipulate people with said words. Julius Ceasars 'Divide and Conquer'. Hope that makes some sort of sense. They usually sound good in my head but when i speak (or type) it never seems quite as good ) Such is life. Hail

Another great video guys. I love this song. One of my favorite Metallica songs. Okay.. first off, yes, its a sad song. This song is not about James or anyone in the band. Its about a life (any life) full of regret and realizing his time is up, no time to fix or change anything, it's too late, he's old now and will have to die with all that regret. Also, about Kirk and this solo. Its his favorite solo of any song he has done. One of my favs too. But, he wasn't struggling with the solo. I believe he tried once before getting it right the second time. The producer and band were getting on his ass about the solo because he hadn't tried anything yet. He just kept putting it off to where there was nothing left to be added to the song except his solo. I used to have that "year and a half of Metallica" behind the scenes documentary on VHS. HA! Lol

I consider a new breath in my lungs when I awaken a manifested miracle at this point in my life. As you understand why you where angry and time passes you begin to see that you made it thus far and the little things like a roof over your head and a new day to create a new story line you begin to let it go and cry it out of you. idk I think anyway?!?

I also believe that sometimes fear can stop you from forgiving someone. After a few years of ignoring or not thinking of them thoughts of regret for your part in the separation begin to surface. I guess time changes the narrative and the feeling of the moments that created that unforgivingness that has ate away at you as you remember more clearly the details. A war has two people fighting for their side to be understood and sometimes we just throw our hands up and walk away pissed. I think fear of not being forgiven can stop you from being forgiven -as we give in.
