I think what James meant by writing "made of clay" was not to say the soldier was cheap and disposable but rather someone that can be molded into anything the military wants them to be.
But this song text has double messages. Obviously, of course, is the military. But this song is also about mental illness and what is really expected of each one of us in our socitiey we live in.

+Tamas Egyed Yeah, 0:38 "This is the heaviest song of all time." *...Not.* First of all, the phrase "of all time" has been *so* overused, it has completely lost *any* impact it had. Also, *logically* speaking, it is almost always used erroneously, since "all time" means *ALL* time-past, present, *and* future. But we know what Vin meant. And he stated *just* an opinion, not a fact. And I think it's not even a wide-spread opinion. Everyone's seen loads and loads of *"Heaviest"* lists, and on how many of them exactly is Disposable Heroes featured, hmm? Since opinion lists are about as useful as physically fighting to determine who is right, I'm not even going to throw any candidates here. But *Tamas* you are right, *defining* is needed first. Starting from some common sense feature like the amount of aggression & relentlessness *combined* *with* earth-shattering bass frequencies in the song would be a start. Still, coming up with a singular answer is probably impossible and hence trying to find the answer is not worth of anyone's time. But everyone can have their own *favourite* heavy song :)
I don't think we have the same definition of heavy. It's thrash metal it's not really heavy. Heavy metallica songs include "The Thing That Should Not Be", and "Dream No More" (Coincidently both about Cthulu)
Tron Cat metallica was better James killed all the big 4 vocally.Truth be told Belladonna was alright same with Araya and Mustaine sounds like a cat with its leg caught in a garbage disposal.
Tron Cat Sorry just your opinion but not a majority opinion.Because MOP went platinum has Hell Awaits even went gold yet? And hey dude I love Slayer seen them 4 times.
Mid 80s , The Love for M.O.,P was so widespred that it was even being played at the parties I would go to, .. I remember how common it was to hear either M.O.P or Sanitarium almost regularly, either on the radio or at a party or from someones car driving back in those days ........ When a year earlier seemed like Nobody even knew who Metallica was. Im a Slayer fan from 86 era , Hell Awaits was straight Thrash/Speed Metal ... M.O.P was that & more imo

Great reaction and analysis video! I remember listening to this song on cassette tape in the late 80s. It truly stands the test of time...awesome is awesome no matter how old.
Again from one of the most brilliant albums to come out in the 80s. This song is a tour de force of songwriting and musician ship. Right alongside Gods Of War and War Pigs in terms of its lyrical strength.
When I was 18 and a senior in High school in 1988, I used to come home from from school and pick up my guitar and play this song. This helped me in so many ways to Jam with Metallica at the highest volume. Unbelievable release of stress.

I am kinda ashamed of myself now.. Do more progressive stuff please. Like this please: Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down (11 famous singers in one song, concept album) BTBAM - Ants Of The Sky /// White Walls (Brutal prog metal with elements of fun, concept album) Haken - Falling Back To Earth /// Visions (Buildup and resolution at finest, concept album) Next to None - The Wanderer (Tehno elements in a song, 18-19 years old members) Native Construct - Mute (Prog metal orchestra, Devin Townsend feel, concept album) (I strongly suggest reacting to whole album, it is a masterpiece) Intervals - Epiphany (Djazz (Djent + Jazz), instrumental) Leprous - Bilateral or Dare You (New prog with old feel) Rush - YYZ (Old classic prog, that inspired generations) Dream Theater - Octavarium /// Panic Attack (Like damn bro, most famous and influental prog metal band) Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (Why won't you just do this already?) Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Softer side of prog metal, they are quite similar to Tool) Symphony X - The Odyssey /// The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (Metal inspired by classical music, guitar work is similar to Yngwie Malmsteen) Liquid Tension Experiment - When The Water Breaks (Super band with 3 members of DT, and Tom Levis from King Crimson on bass) As you see i added quite a few ;)
This is by far my absolute favorite Metallica song!!! You nailed it. This is the most insane Superhuman thrash song ever made. Just mind blowing how deep their lyrics are.
By the way, Vin and Sori, great analysis of the lyrics. Many times fans of the music aren't necessarily examining the totallity of the lyrics and are just grooving, you know? You both do such a great job.
Great reaction! This is perhaps in my top 3 all time favorite songs. Sabaton's The Price of a Mile is a great song that reminds a bit of the lyrics of Disposable Heroes. It is set in World War I and does answer the question "What's the price of a mile?".
To me, this is Metallica’s deepest display of lyricism. I’m officially older than the guys in the band were at the time of writing this song, and I can’t fathom sitting alone and thinking up this stuff. This is some seriously deep stuff. It’s amazing that these guys wrote all these songs, even more so at such a young age.
Also, a lot of vets coming home return as empty shells with PTSD and other issues; used by the military and then discarded. in the service of empire, it wasn't that long ago when we had a draft where people had no choice.
I love when Vin gets so into the song and starts air guitaring lol makes me feel like a kid again and wanna air guitar with him XD lol Except in my case I could have an actual guitar and probably jam the song out cuz I am a guitarist lol Love your videos guys and love this channel
I always thought that "you coward, you servant" was talking about his fear to refuse to do as he was told and not stand up and say no. Not being strong enough to stand up for what he felt was right or wrong but blindly followed orders.

I saw them this year live in Zurich. And they played this song !!!! And it was insane! I am so happy.
BTW.....YOUR AUDIO IS ROCKEN now. !!Horns up!!!
Appreciate that !
I don't think we have the same definition of heavy. It's thrash metal it's not really heavy. Heavy metallica songs include "The Thing That Should Not Be", and "Dream No More" (Coincidently both about Cthulu)
I don't think he meant it as in genre but how hard hitting and how heavy sounding it is
+Berk Uzdoǧan Wouldn't it have been *clearer* had Vin said so, then, hmm? Instead of 0:38 "This is the heaviest song of all time."
IN your FACE!! Nobody could touch them back then, No band!
97warlock ismyname MOP was a work of art.Metallica's Picasso.I remembet like you said going to parties and all the preps could stand was Sanitarium.Nobody actually knew the true art MOP was.James is truly gifred as a riff and song writer.Cliff was classically trained and Lars is great at araingment. So a true collection of virtuoso musicians.
No.
Great reaction and analysis video! I remember listening to this song on cassette tape in the late 80s. It truly stands the test of time...awesome is awesome no matter how old.
I don't really consider this song a "heavy" song. This is definitely more of a speed/thrash song.
Gotta be kidding, this song is a juggernaut
I agree but its still badass.
marc dewey oh, most definitely. This song is one of the best they've ever written. I was just making an objective comment about what vin had said.
Yea I get what you mean, and I agree, but he meant it soundwise, I think
Joey so Slayer s fast Songs arent Heavy -hahahahahaha
Again from one of the most brilliant albums to come out in the 80s. This song is a tour de force of songwriting and musician ship. Right alongside Gods Of War and War Pigs in terms of its lyrical strength.
Please, "To Live Is To Die" by Metallica
When I was 18 and a senior in High school in 1988, I used to come home from from school and pick up my guitar and play this song. This helped me in so many ways to Jam with Metallica at the highest volume. Unbelievable release of stress.
Damage Inc is heavier
Death Fallen Angel Agree that whole album is Amazing
I still have MOP on cassette and Vinyl
"...sounding of the clock that ticks" refers to the sound of gunfire, and getting used to hearing that while trying to sleep, eat, etc.
By far my favorite on the album. But being a desert storm vet it strikes a chord. We played it a ton.
Whoa!
One of the guys even described the drums in the intro (0:49-1:17) as sounding like a 50 cal machine gun firing, actually pretty accurate.
I wonder if Aron Ra has watched this reaction to one of his favourite songs from his favourite genre of music? :)
Metallica - Dyer's Eve and Hate Train
Heaviest song of all time, that's debatable. I feel that Battery and Damage Inc. are heavier.
The Thing that should not be
that song is pretty heavy it sead chills up my spine every time that's will i love this song
DUDE, y'all need to go ahead and check out The Thing That Should Not Be. Also wouldn't mind seeing a reaction to Horrorscope and In Union We Stand by Overkill.
Maybe not the heaviest ever, but the best from 'Master of Puppets'.
This song is a perfect example of what metal is.
Few songs can come close to it.
The Watcher is from the Marvel universe, his name is Uatu.
The bald guy?
I think Vin refereed to Dr Manhattan from "Watchmen", which is DC. But it can be this Uatu as well...
Yup, the bald dude with the head 5 times too large for his body wearing the blue and white toga outfit. Each universe has it's own Watcher, Uatu is the Watcher for the 616 universe.
Incredible song incredible album and def incredible band💯
Helloween - victim of fate
Bathory- enter the eternal flame , call from the grave, fine day to die
3 Wheel Militia Helloween: I Want Out.
Judas, Halloween, ride the sky
… the Eternal 'Fire'
I think this is one of most underappreciated songs by Metallica. I've always loved it and wondered why it wasn't more heavily praised.
Please react to vektor-recharging the void!!
greatest metal ever constructed
Carlos Sosa the guitar work is insane!!
Forests of legend is my favourite
pratik soni yes Vector is so good.
I always thought the line about "made of clay" meant more along the lines of the soldier is easy to mold so he can be made to do what he's being told to do.
"The heaviest song".. what? It's not even the heaviest song on Master of Puppets :D
The Thing That Should Not Be. the riff that killed Elvis.
I said the same Haha
Well done guys one of Metallica’s best and never gets reacted to. Love those 3 opposing drum symbols at the start!
I am kinda ashamed of myself now..
Do more progressive stuff please. Like this please:
Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down
(11 famous singers in one song, concept album)
BTBAM - Ants Of The Sky /// White Walls
(Brutal prog metal with elements of fun, concept album)
Haken - Falling Back To Earth /// Visions
(Buildup and resolution at finest, concept album)
Next to None - The Wanderer
(Tehno elements in a song, 18-19 years old members)
Native Construct - Mute
(Prog metal orchestra, Devin Townsend feel, concept album)
(I strongly suggest reacting to whole album, it is a masterpiece)
Intervals - Epiphany
(Djazz (Djent + Jazz), instrumental)
Leprous - Bilateral or Dare You
(New prog with old feel)
Rush - YYZ
(Old classic prog, that inspired generations)
Dream Theater - Octavarium /// Panic Attack
(Like damn bro, most famous and influental prog metal band)
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition
(Why won't you just do this already?)
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
(Softer side of prog metal, they are quite similar to Tool)
Symphony X - The Odyssey /// The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
(Metal inspired by classical music, guitar work is similar to Yngwie Malmsteen)
Liquid Tension Experiment - When The Water Breaks
(Super band with 3 members of DT, and Tom Levis from King Crimson on bass)
As you see i added quite a few ;)
This is by far my absolute favorite Metallica song!!! You nailed it. This is the most insane Superhuman thrash song ever made. Just mind blowing how deep their lyrics are.
Dyers eve is heavier. Great track if you havent heard it.
Annnnddd my daily request
A R C H I T E C T S - N I H I L I S T
Patrick Sherwood pretty sure he did...he probably just likes this one better
By the way, Vin and Sori, great analysis of the lyrics. Many times fans of the music aren't necessarily examining the totallity of the lyrics and are just grooving, you know? You both do such a great job.
metallica - fight fire with fire
I think this has to be Metallica’s most underrated song, really wish they still played it live.
Dyers eve. Metallica
Beautiful job! More from my high school days. \m/
Metallica-jump into the fire or four horsemen, let's go back to the beginning
Great reaction! This is perhaps in my top 3 all time favorite songs. Sabaton's The Price of a Mile is a great song that reminds a bit of the lyrics of Disposable Heroes. It is set in World War I and does answer the question "What's the price of a mile?".
I think Leper Messiah might be heavier.
Bill Braskey damage inc and dyers eve are the heaviest songs
Fight fire with fire has entered the chat
To me, this is Metallica’s deepest display of lyricism. I’m officially older than the guys in the band were at the time of writing this song, and I can’t fathom sitting alone and thinking up this stuff. This is some seriously deep stuff. It’s amazing that these guys wrote all these songs, even more so at such a young age.
KAMELOT "March of Mephisto".
Great choice guys! Please do The Illusionist by Scar Symmetry!
Katatonia - Leaders
Also, a lot of vets coming home return as empty shells with PTSD and other issues; used by the military and then discarded. in the service of empire, it wasn't that long ago when we had a draft where people had no choice.
First time I'm this early! Overkill - Ironbound
Ruin Sentinel Hriss or Skullcrusher
YES ^THIS^
Ruin Sentinel Hriss Horrorscope, In Union We Stand.
I'd settle for ANY Overkill?!??!!
Frank Gaul Me too, but would prefer Horrorscope or In Union We Stand, hell....I'd be happy with Elimination or Hello From The Gutter.
Love this...and yes, this is the heaviest metallica song ever. Thanks guys, you make the world a better place.
Leper Messiah - Metallica
Finally! I've been waiting for someone to react to this one!
React to Metallica - Bleeding me
Man, so glad this song/band/album exist. Getting nostalgic.
Dyers eve please guys for the love of god 👏👏👏👏👏👏
You should check out the 85 Metal Hammer Fest live in Germany video. They asked the crowd if they wanted to here a new song and it was this song. Bad Ass live and RAW video.
These Colors Don't Run by Architects
Jeff Hutchinson THIS!!!!!! ANYTHING by Architects
Naysaaaaayeeeer 🤘🤘
This was the first Metallica song I ever heard (consciously, I probably heard Enter Sandman before unknowingly before I was a fan). My friend literally sat my ass down and said, "You're not getting up until you listen to this!" 8 minutes later, a metalhead was born. The most underrated Metallica song, in my humble opinion.
