I ran out of gas once in my life, I was over a mile offshore and couldn't get cell service, I had a single tank that held right at 10-gallons, and got lucky that another boat came along about an hour later and gave us some gas to get us back, and the very next day I went down and bought another tank that held 6 gallons, and from then on I ran on the 6-gallon tank going out, and once it ran out I didn't go any farther, and would switch over and had the 10-gallon tank to get me back.
As a commercial fisher, this is mentioned in many courses like the med/masters ticket/iroc radio operator certificate
People used laugh at my four fuel cans. I could fish all day and have spare gas for stranded boaters.
Good advice!
Rule of thirds also applies to air when scuba diving. 1/3 to destination, 1/3 to return 1/3 if something bad happens and helps keeping you from running out of air. Run out of air and your family is going to have a very bad day.
Was told this when I first got my boat license over 10 years ago now. Have to account for tide wind and or any other issues that may arise.
Most of us can only afford a 3rd.
Thank you. Will keep that in mind.
Great tip
Depends on the speed and direction of current.
Good rule to use. Thanks Wayne. 👍😊🚤
You bet!
I use half my fuel I don’t use 1/3. Cause going there is farther than coming back. Coming back the line is straight as can be. Going there I’m going back forth running around etc.
Nothing but truth
So in canoes "fuel" is beers
I've never heard anybody say that but that has been my rule all along because it just makes sense, one third out, one third in, one-third reserved. Also consistent speed because the faster you go the less miles per gallon👍
small boats. I use 2. 6gl tanks. when a gal left I switch tanks. turn back similar system
Of all the RUclips boating “gurus” Mr Wayne and the guys at TBN know their s**t, love the content for sure have helped this young seafaring lad a many a day!!!!!
I like to do 1/4 if it's possible so when you get home he's only burned a half a tank
I knew this but i use a sailboat😂
Shouldn't it be 1/4 cause what am I using for riding around once I get there the reserve? Honest question
I went to empty and rowed back..
Rule if thirds is from photography
and bring a pale if you go more than half.
Someone seeing this after burning over 1/2 of their tank to get to the spot 😁
Never heard of 1/3 just always burned 🔥 gas ⛽️ like it's free
lol
Yep
Never thought about that before
I learned it when I was using two 6 gallon portable tanks. Someone told me to never run the first one too low before heading home.
🌴. 🤔Hummm, is the tank half empty or half full ? My theory is the tank wasn’t big enough to begin with !!! 👈🏻
Been using half out and half to get back. Don't really care if I run out of gas on the pontoon. The wife has a designated paddle with her name on it.
That's one way to do it!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Just joking of course. I have on occasion been guilty of 1/2 and 1/2 but your suggestion will be utilized on our next outing, thanks for the knowledge.
What if it takes half a tank to get were you need to be 😂
Better bring a spare jug just in case!
But I didn't make it to my destination. I'm at the inlet. I need to be 49 miles out.
Uh oh!
Don't go that far. Didn't you see the movie the perfect storm?
My boat holds 88 gallons!!! If I’m using a third just to get to where I fish, I’m going to the store to by my fish!
My boat holds 110g, I often use 1/3 and sometimes a touch more to get on the tuna, you got it so use it.
Maybe use your brain a little when you are planning your trip instead of using ridiculous rules of thumb.
I can use ¾ of my fuel heading upstream and still have plenty for the return trip. I can use about ⅔ of my fuel going full throttle on still water to my destination and still have enough fuel to casually cruise back. If i am starting out heading downstream leeward, I will only use 20-25% of my fuel so I have enough to get back.
Dont teach people to be brainless.
Just common sense really lol
