  • Does a Wheel Chock actually help at the Boat Ramp? A wheel chock or tire chock might be useful when launching a boat or retrieving your boat from a marina or boat ramp. But some marinas have a very steep boat ramp and your wheel chock may not hold your vehicle in place if your parking break isn't set or your truck slips out of Park. When I am loading a boat on a trailer at the boat ramp or launching my boat at a marina, I have been using a wheel chock for years but I have never actually tested mine at the marina to see if it really would hold my truck in an emergency.
A wheel chock can be useful at the boat ramp when launching your boat from a boat trailer but be sure to test it out to see if a wheel chock actually works with your specific vehicle at your boat ramp because like me, you might find out that it doesn't really work for you! Boat ramp safety and making sure your truck doesn't end up in the water can not only save us money but also the humiliation.
In this video I also cover ways to keep your wheel chock from getting lost or run over by your boat trailer as well as some options for when we are not using a wheel chock to help keep our vehicle from rolling back into the water at the boat ramp.

Wayne the boat guy, wheel chocks are sized by vehicle wheel diameter. The chock you are using looks like a Jetski trailer chock. Trucks are designed to drive over obstacles that size plus you used it under your rear tire with an empty pickup bed. The front tire would have offered more down force. A better solution is to engage four wheel drive if available. In two wheel drive park will keep one rear wheel locked and the parking brake only locks the rear wheel. In four wheel drive the park gear will keep one front and one rear wheel from rolling. Since the rear wheels are usually on the slickest part of the ramp it’s the front wheels you should focus on keeping planted.

He is only using one chock, I would use a minimum of two chocks and on a steep hill, use four chocks. $32 is cheap insurance for a $40,000 truck.

Makes sense - but I've never seen anyone at the boat ramp use more than one (and many people don't use any).

Please add this advice to your video. 1: Get the wheel chock for your tire size. Your tire retailer can give you specifics on the size and may try to sell you an expensive chock. 2: Shop around for a good chock within your price range. You will probably pay more than nine bucks but get a lot of value by not replacing your truck. 3: Use two! I repeat, USE TWO! You tried with one on three different grades. If you have a trailer, use two. After twenty years in big rigs driving long-haul, I have found the best chocks are those rated for your tires and curved to fit. I have assisted and saved my own butt on Donner, The Sisters, Independence and other passes using chocks with loads over 45,000lds. As I said, it may cost $35 to $65 (what I paid for chocks for the Freightliner/Reefer trailer) but will save you down the road. Be safe and keep up the content.

Locking all four brakes is the only way to go. I use a board from the seat to the brake pedal, some people use a modified caulking gun, and you can also buy a device just for that purpose. Mechanics use them for testing brake lights.

Exactly, also in wheel alignments. By the time I get out of the vehicle to put those chocks down on our gravel ramp, the vehicle is already in danger. Keep preaching the truth please. 2x4 is good enough for me.

wheel chock size does make a difference , However , so does the ramp angle 📐… lotta ramps are really too steep being steeper than 7degrees because whoever ( VA DWR or private ) puts them in would use More concrete if the angle of the ramp was shallower and consequently take more money to put in … I made my own chocks from wedges cut from a 24 inch diameter oak tree … works better than the store bought too !!!

The wheel chock is meant for extra insurance as you say... If it begins to slide, it probably has a locked up tire or two so it won't need to hold the entire car on it's own.

Wheel chocks are only to prevent parking brake creep, not to prevent all movement. For the same reason you can drive your car over a curb or parking lot stop. Mico (and others) make 4 wheel hydraulic locks for tow trucks. They have to winch cars and stuff that may be over the side or in otherwise tough locations. One may be a good investment for your custom dual/ triple axle yacht behind your new $100,000 truck. They run in the hundreds of dollars + installation though. Summit Racing sells a cheaper hydraulic 2-wheel "staging lock" that fits in one of your front/ rear brake lines for $58.00. I have no idea if it works, but it should.
It would also make for a tricky anti-theft device if you hide the wiring. All would be well until Mr. thief applies the brakes - for the first and only time.

Keep in mind that when you have the trailer attached to the truck there's more weight and I think the idea isn't for the shock to stop the truck by itself but in combination with your brakes the shock add more surface to the truck on the pavement, now me i I put my tundra wheel drive while dropping off my boat just in case some happen the already on 4×4

0:38 this just gave me the though about how the wheel chock os tied to the truck, from the bumper on a strong short rope, so if the truck rolls the block. It runs up the tight rope and stops the trucks trie from turning backwards? 🤔

Several people mentioned the size of the chocks. What’s interesting is that when we shop for these at places like Harbor Freight they don’t specify what size tire or vehicle they are for. It seems that to get chocks that would work well with a full size pickup they need to be bought from suppliers who focus on commercial and industrial applications.

I would try getting a truck wheel chalk if you’re gonna try a test with a truck, sir you’ve got a wheel chalk for like a Honda Civic and a wheel on your truck as far too big for that type of wheel chalk as you call it so to enhance your videos and help others explain to them that the chalk you have is for a compact car or a car and not a light duty to medium duty trucklet alone truck. I was gonna worry about my truck in a boat ramp would like a wheel chalk for a semi. They’re not heavy. They made a rubber and they’ll definitely stop your pick up without a doubt.

I use on a 6 x 12 bike trailer is a lot bigger and it don’t move on a slope, wet ground all that can change thingsto three times the size of what you’re playing with so buy bigger chops and try again you may be surprised

Is the stopping power of the wheel chock different if you change the orientation? So that it still wedges but doesn’t flip over so easily, maybe the hypotenuse should be contacting the ground for maximum surface area and lowest center of gravity. Could be another interesting thing to test but I see now that you mentioned that towards the end of the video. Awesome stuff as usual Wayne!
