    To me, one of the amazing things about 'Mellon Collie...' is its depth. I remember skipping tracks when I was in the 8th grade, when it came out, that I would later come to appreciate. It has a living quality to it. It grows with you as you mature. Nowadays, to me it's a nearly perfect album.

    I love this album, I prefer it over Siamese Dreams because, while less consistent, I think only Mayonaise reaches the same peaks as Mellon Collie's best songs and there's just something really magical about the sound in this album

    • @OriginalAsherella
      @OriginalAsherella 3 года назад +12

      MCIS is one of the most complete in every way imaginable rock albums ever created in my opinion. Siamese dream is a masterpiece, Mellon Collie is something even more. This album gets ever so slightly under rated Soley because of its popularity. It’s the album people know so automatically it’s got to be less because it’s “commercial” which is a total BS way of thinking. But that so happens and is the case with this album for sure. It’s incredible, it’s amazing, my life would not be what it is now had it never existed.

    • @smoshbooz
      @smoshbooz 3 года назад +9

      I don't agree at all. Siamese Dream is dynamic, beautiful, quick and slow and powerful all in one. And not a single song on MCIS reaches Soma, Geek USA or Mayo. MCIS has many great songs but it's too inconsistent

    • @SiLatics56
      @SiLatics56 3 года назад +7

      @@smoshbooz I disagree. All a matter of taste but I would say nothing on Siamese Dream lives up to the likes of Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, Farewell and Goodnight, Tonight Tonight, Here Is No Why, To Forgive, Galapagos, Where Boys Fear To Dread ... then even the proggy stuff like Porcelina ... which isn't to all tastes but shows the level of ambition is way higher. Don't get me wrong, I love Siamese Dream, but for an album like Mellon Collie to have 28 songs on with almost no filler (I actually like every song to different degrees, even though you could make a case for songs like We Only Come Out At Night and maybe Take Me Down being classed as 'filler') makes it something that bit more special to me.
      To be fair to those who disagree, I was hooked on Mellon Collie long before I had listened to Siamese Dream properly. If it had been the other way around, it could be different. I still don't think anything on Siamese Dream could top Thru The Eyes Of Ruby though. One of the greatest songs of all time for me.

    • @separator94
      @separator94 2 года назад +1

      Mellon Collie is a much more mature album. More well put together and thought out overall. Definitely the pinnacle of the career. Corgan, himself, has stated it countless times. That while Siamese Dream is a great album, it was a bit overproduced and they still had a lot to learn as a band.
      They actually took time off, after touring for Siamese Dream, to further hone their skills before making their next album. Billy wanted Mellon Collie to be their magnum opus and they spent more time working on it than all of their other albums. The result was the masterpiece we got, which is still hailed as the greatest double LP of all time. Beating out Pink Floyd's, The Wall in most polls, lists and reviews.

XYU,33,stumbaline,bodies,here is no why are a few of my favorites but I can place a memory to 93% of the songs. From playing a song to a girl to explain my feelings, to getting hyped before a high school soccer game, to losing a loved one, to sitting at the beach with old buddies smoking doobies back in the day. If you want a deeper dive into this era of the Pumpkins, check out The Aeroplane Flies High, which was the b-sides box set from this time period. It's technically a collection of the singles that were released, which include b-sides on each. That's 28 b-sides total on that boxed set, and one of the songs is just a recording of 70+ riffs they recorded and didn't use. Their volume of creative output at this point was insane.

    Excellent review and thank you for recognizing what is for me a symbol of my youth and generation. One thing I think you kind of missed is the titles of the discs...Dawn to Dusk and Twilight to Starlight. The songs on the second disc make more sense in that light. I love how they began to incorporate keyboard on this album. The piano & mellotron on track 1 are beautifully coupled together. This was probably their most dynamic album. The intro/outro for "Jelly Belly" is amazing on the drums. "An Ode to No One" has an amazing guitar solo & drums. As for their tuning, they're down a 1/2 step for this album. "Here Is No Why" uses Amaj7 (a jazz chord) as its 1st chord, but it's down a 1/2 step, so it's A Flat Major 7. During the 1st part of the Mellon Collie tour, they did 2 night shows. One night was acoustic and the other night was electric. Lastly, the b-sides from this album were also very good.

    Fun fact: The Smashing Pumpkins are one of The Deftones biggest influences. Also, I never really thought about it, but when you mentioned the riff of 1979 being the kickstart of every 2000's indie band, you were absolutely right. A lot of early/mid 2000's indie bands very much leaned into nostalgia. I never realized how much the drums lent to the nostalgic feel of the song. It brings to mind bands like The Strokes, Kings of Leon, and The White Stripes, to name a few. I've listened to this song literally thousands of times and never made that connection. Thanks for this little shift in perspective. I just want to add that songs like Cupid, Beautiful, Lily, and We Only Come Out At Night lend to the visual theme of the album. Billy takes an interest in silent films. The album Gish was named after silent film actress Lillian Gish. She may also be the "Lily" in the song. If you look carefully at the woman on the cover of MCIS, she looks quite similar to Lillian Gish. That's why I think those songs fit into the album.

    I had many musical milestones in my life, and this album was one of them. I had only heard Bullet with Butterfly Wings. It was also around the time when they had deals like get 12 cds of a dollar from a few places. I got this album that way. Since I could just pick out a bunch of cds, I could take chances on albums, money was super tight growing up. I had the radio, and 4 channels on TV living on a farm, so I played what music I had constantly, and slowly learned to appreciate the fine details in music, signature sounds, and emotional connection to music. Basically teaching myself music appreciation, not just catchiness. Which I believe really helped me grow into a critical thinker as a person. These days I have quite the large amount of genres I listen to. Which can only be useful digesting so many different perspectives.

If you're looking for another band to do a series on you should go through all of Mother Mother's stuff from Touch Up and onwards. The reason why I loved this album was because when it came out you would hear 1979 or 33 on the alt/pop stations and heavier songs like bullet and zero on the hard rock stations. Not to mention the heavy rotation of the music videos on Mtv. It was just great being 16yrs old in 1995.

    Normally not a massive fan for reaction videos but I found this hugely entertaining! I could tell you really got into the album, it really does keep you on your toes. It’s probably my favourite album of all time despite its flaws and length. Love for me is the weakest song and one I normally skip, but I find it totally sucks you in and I can usually listen to the rest with no issue really

    this album is a masterpiece, and an uncommon opinion, this album opened the grunge door to what was to come with the likes of Tool (Soundgarden were also part of this "Tool" door opening) but i genuinely think if this album had not come out when it did, something like Tool's Aenima might not get made and released on a big label (the scale of each album is vast in mostly different ways,but some shared). Mellon Collie (like Aenima, and Lateralus by Tool) were decades ahead of when released a lot of world only recently caught up

    7:46 this is the exact reaction that every single human who has ever listened to this song gives on the first listen. The lyric and melody is sorta cringe and weird the first time, but after just a few more listens it's like "yeah, that works, and it's weird and disjointed, but damn it's creative!" Billy is a musical savante.

    One of the greatest rock records ever, no filler and it's 2 to 3 albums worth of material not to mention there's another entire albums worth of bsides and outtakes from those sessions. Billy was on fire in the 90s.

    If you like the shoegaze side of Pumpkins, they kinda pursued that sound throughout their career.
    Check out songs like "Real Love" and "The Imploding Voice", because they do it quite well. :)
    Great upload, man! Also, it sounds like you should listen to some Hum

    Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness is my favorite Album of all time. The band sound amazing all playing live in the Studio and the Production from Flood is incredible. The range of song writing for one Album is unmatched by any other Alternative band, only The Pumpkins could make an Album like this.
    Btw the way, they are planning on Touring a dedicated Mellon Collie show once Covid is under control.

    Not necessarily the album, but the track in itself which is considered by many the greatest prog rock song ever

    Supposedly, Flood used sonic maximizers and bass boosters on every channel, including mics. That’s why it seems to “punch” harder and louder than SD does

    From the comments of Billy, it is a concept album supposed to tell the day of a character called Zero. For example, the start with Mellon Collie and Tonight Tonight is when he slowly wakes up. Then, Zero is the presentation of the main character, which was acted by Billy on stage, wearing the wellkown Zero shirt; playing Zero is, from what I understood, responsible a lot for him shaving his hair. To finish, the last songs, softer, can be seen as the last thoughts of Zero before sleeping.
