luca_starks it’s not really an age thing, more just that brown face has never been ok

@@amanday3103 I think more on my behalf than on the act of it.
don't think i thought much about it initially. Looking back...yeah...not great. Because it never has been ok. And the fact that it happened in 2012 looking back is kinda appalling.

Amanda Kurukulasuriya let me ask you would you have a problem if say Sutton Foster played an actress from the 30s in a movie which required her to do black face because the actress she’s playing had to do black face?

I still can’t believe no one’s gonna say anything about Jessie Mueller doing brown face.
EDITS: 1) If you are not South Asian please understand that you can not possibly understand the hurt it causes me to see someone put on my skin and play a caricature of my culture. Saying it’s a play within a play does not excuse the racism. Yes it was written and set in a different time. Brown face was never ok, but at the very least if we are going to perform it now it needs to be updated. Otherwise, they just shouldn’t do it.

Because THEY weren’t. Janet Conover was. Jessie was just playing Janet Conover. That’s the point. It’s a play within a play

It was a bad move. Maybe this revival should have changed. Maybe a middle-eastern actress should have been cast. But, it’s a play within a play. I’m not saying you should completely ignore it and pretend it’s okay. But, we need to acknowledge the time it was written and the time it’s set in.

Also, where’s this “attack” on Andy Karl?? His character was the same thing as Jessie’s. Yet, I don’t see anyone bashing him for it. Blame the casting directors for not realising it’s wrong. This is the whole point of the BLM movement, to learn from past mistakes. There’s no way a production like this would fly in 2020 without complete uproar. THAT shows progress

Costumes and makeup aren’t even thought of when contracts are signed. Also this was early in Jessies career. She wouldn’t have been able to speak out on it like she could now. And it’s the director and the writer you should be going after. Not the actors who signed a contract months before makeup was even considered.

MeliBeans12345 what Andy did was wrong too. And I’m all for people learning from their mistakes if that’s what they actually do. If they step up, take responsibility for it, and apologize. As far as I know Jessie and Andy have not done that (but please correct me if I’m wrong). We also can’t just give a pass to racism that happened before the black lives matter movement. Justin Trudeau did black and brown face before BLM. No one said “well, he did it before 2013 so we’ll let it slide.”
