  • Attack on Titan discourse flashbacks!! Another violent anime/manga series attempts to develop in a more peaceful direction only for a vocal minority of fans to wish for a return to the bloodshed, except this time, I feel it's even more clear that people just don't get the point. The Farmland Arc of Vinland Saga Season 2 is the most natural follow-up to the events and ideas of the first season and in this video essay I attempt to explain why.

    So I understand to a certain extent people that liked the action and killing and violence in season 1 and were dissapointed the show "changed" in the second season. However, the probably is the idea the show changed.
    The series literally starts with the best part of 3 entire episodes dedicated to peaceful living. The show you someone who is clearly portrayed as a certifable badass, stronger and more skilled in battle then probably anyone else in the world and he REJECTS violence. The problem is that you have a swath of typical anime watchers lashing out at it because they wanted another revenge fantasy. The watched the shit Thorfinn went through in season one and was cheering for him and wishing they could be him, instead of feeling the pain of every slash, every kick, knowing that at some point... his going to understand what his dad meant and his whole world will come crashing down.

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth  Год назад +29

      You are so right, the direction it took should've been clear from those first three episodes. + The fact that Thors is one of the most badass pacifist characters ever. I imagine a lot of these people see the first few episodes as "stuff you have to get through to get to the 'good part'"

    • @GamerFlair
      @GamerFlair Год назад +12

      @@chryysanth Absolutely. What they don't realise is that... it could have been done inside an episode. You could be literally started showing Thorfinn at home with his loving kind dad. Floki arrives and is like, yo, time to war. Of they go. If it was purely meant to be a revenge romp, there is 0 reason to have the setup last 3 episodes. The only thing it would need to establish would be that Thorfinn loves his dad and that his dad died sparking his lust for vengence and journey into becoming a badass like his dad.
      The fact that spend 3 episodes showing that Thor's is strong enough to take whatever he wants but choses not to, choses the path of peace is to show that is the message. You'd just have an opening much closer to AoT's opening if you wanted to establish a motive for an angry at the world kid (whilst that show does get more complicated, its very much set up at the start as a quintisensial revenge kick anime, and ironically also gets a big backlash due to the fact it ends up trying to teach people to stop with the violence)

    We get a story arc where the main protagonist: faces ptsd, fights his past demons, deals with regret and guilt for his past evil "the ends justify the means" type of actions; and finds a new purpose in life, one that is built on peace love and reason instead of mindless violence, finding a new identity and becoming a better person. Yet people dont like it cause "where cool fight scene?". I swear some people are too afraid to think about what they're watching for more than 5 seconds.

      this is why I say the story telling and character development in this anime are average…meaning there is room left for improvement.
      I’ll tackle what I personally think people think is bad about the second season. Seeing as most negative reviews came after or during the release of the second season. And it has all been oversimplified with “not enough action”.
      I personally don’t think people have anything against the lack of action, as some might say, but the lack of content. Seeing as the second season focused on the slave topic, I believe most people were unsatisfied with the level of content in that department. And that is….”violence”. Yup, in the first season we saw the violence that is the result of war. However…slavery had its own violence, especially during that period in time. And I feel the anime didn’t capture that as it should. I feel they could’ve done a much better job at capturing the true violence related to slavery at the time, and done it in such a way that resonated with the emotional side of people watching. But I feel they failed to do that. Was there some harshness to it, yes. But it didn’t capture my attention or emotional side, when there was a sad side story being told, I can’t say I felt bad or emotional. And that’s not because I’m some harsh bastard lol, but that goes to show that some storytellers can and some can’t. Or maybe they didn’t do it because they wanted it to be more underage friendly, but I doubt it.
      Second is the Mc character development. While some people prob didn’t expect him to turn away from violence so quickly, I don’t think that was the main prob. The problem is the development it took to get there. First let’s just admit that almost everyone who watched the show expected the Mc to turn over a new leaf at some point..otherwise what was the point of his father’s teachings in the beginning, right? However, I believe people think this was done too early and too suddenly. I definitely would have liked seeing him truly grow a bit more as a person before reaching that point. I believe his violent nature should have carried a bit longer into his teenage - young adult years, and from there on having a change. That would outline the importance of age as well, when it comes to understanding, something his father had over him in the beginning. This would also allow him to reach his full potential as a warrior, which is a major theme of the first season and also of being a viking. And then his full potential as a pacifist, which would come after his change. Witnessing him achieve being a warrior without the anger he had in the first season was, I think, what most people had hoped. Him being grown, free of anger, and fighting because that’s all he knows(witnessing his full potential as a warrior), before him having a major moral change. And after that witnessing him at his peak as a pacifier, while taking away the cruelty he inflicted, and focusing it around events around him. Focus that cruelty on slavery for example, truly capture the emotional side of the matter. I believe this would have made the second season better, maybe even better than the first, and would have resonated with the fans much more. Instead we got flushed with mediocre storylines about side characters that didn’t make fans feel anything. We’re they horrible? No, but they weren’t good either. They were a typical side story, which tons of anime, tons of story tellers would do a better job at telling.

      @@xxtopgunxx8764the outline you have for Thorfinn’s development just sounds like Musashi’s arc in Vagabond, minus the slavery parts. A story doesn’t have to do what you expect or go where you want it to go to be good.

    (SPOILERS FROM HERE)
    and fans complaining about lack of action reminds me of Thorkell and the way he's acting in his jarldom. Mindlessly walking around looking for a fight among peasants, capturing bears to fight bare handed, and literally fainting at a declaration of peace from Canute. What I don't like about the Farmland Arc is that it seems to imply that warriors know nothing except swing a sword or ax. That's hardly the case though. To be an effective raiding party, you have to have a tremendous array of skills, including but not limited to making camps, hunting, fishing, etc. It's shown that Thorfinn just does not know anything except his daggers(when they were fixing the roof of Old Master). That really undermines the point they try to make about destruction being contrasted with farming. It's not that I don't get the point, as Zoomer Talk says here, I just don't like the point.
    PS I also don't like what the Old Master says about wealth. He says that no one should have so much land that they can't defend it themselves. He ridicules the fact that Ketil gives an absurd amount of tribute to the King. That's just not looking at the big picture. To build a truly nonviolent society, (yk the whole point of Vinland Saga) you have to maintain a large mercenary force like Canute does. Honestly I think Canute should be the protagonist, he has it more or less figured out. To maintain that, you need the kind of tribute that small farmers on the same amount of land could never bring. You need that kind of, dare I say, capitalism to sustain it. The show tries to be anti-violence, while ridiculing the very means to get there. I do get why people like it though. It seems to be very deep, although it really isn't.

    • @tillburr6799
      @tillburr6799 Год назад

      His large farmland was the reason canute wanted to make him and his family outlaws and steal their farmland. Which is a fate not much worse than death. If you need big farmland to fuel a nonviolent society, and the king will violently seize it from you, how much non violence is going on there? Canute has it figured out? My guy, seizing the means of production by force to support utopia is a slippery slope
      I can see why someone could like your comment though, it appears an apt critique, although it really isn’t

    • @aprameyanaganur2934
      @aprameyanaganur2934 Год назад

      @@tillburr6799 What slippery slope? You need to elaborate on that. Also, the fact that Ketil was to be reprimanded has no bearing on my point. The point was in regards to the need of large farms. The Old Master says that everyone should only have as much land as you can defend yourself. That's bullshit. The fact that Canute wanted that land requisitioned is actually in support of my argument that you need that sort of thing to run a nonviolent society. I think what you are trying to say is the Old Master's point that excessive wealth leads to destruction. I won't disagree outright, but you need to take that kind of a risk if you want to make any kind of difference.
      Also notice how you don't refute anything in my original point, just the PS, then say my critique ain't apt. Real thorough there. That's beside the point though.
      Canute does have it more or less figured out. To build a nonviolent society, you need a large standing army to defend it. It's really that simple. Ofc, the show ridicules this saying that if you have to defend peace, it has no meaning. Then says that the heroic thing to do is go find a place where there is no war and no slavery, and run there. Bullshit.
      What I also find interesting is that Vinland Saga seems to have a sense of self awareness about how ridiculous it's being. Canute is that self-awareness incarnate, and honestly the best part of the show apart from Askeladd. I say seems, because when Canute understandably laughs after the absurd peace talks with Thorfinn, his only reply is "wHaT'S tHeRe tO laUgH abOuT?" So it seems to not realize it at the same time. I really don't get it man.

      Canute ideals of power equal peace is basically what we have today. And we are under the control of molloch, god of unhealthy competition. We keep accumulating power because we fear other will have more power and take advantage of us. Eventually we build nuclear weapon, that didn't only destroy the 'enemy' but ourselves. Not only that every country spend a lot of money for military that can be used for other things. In this game, no one is the winner. Part of peace we have today is kept by principle of mutually assured destruction. Is this really true peace? I won't criticize it, since I can watch this youtube video comfortably from my home. And I certainly don't dare to say that my country should drop all it's military.
      Another part of peace is co-dependency and collaboration, I believe this is the ideal that Thorfin propose. Again I won't say that this is the one true solution.
      'True peace' is not an easy problem. We certainly haven't solve it even today.

They have an enemy in you, you have no enemy in them, because they don't reflect the same things you feel. It's not inherently mutual. You can fight and triumph without grudge or hatred or anger. Why do you need it? What does it do? I prefer the philosophy of Musashi when it comes to conflict. If you must fight then fight. If you must die then die. Some of those episodes were more like piano recitals, with some boring plinky plinky piano music playing, and almost fvck all happening on the screen. The studio seemed desperate to match the 24 episodes of the first season, so it seems they stretched out certain parts to make it longer. The first season adapts 54 chapters in 24 episodes, and the second season adapts 45 chapters in the same amount. It’s a shame, because season 1 was basically perfect.

    Loved season 2, but it did drag on for a while during the middle with the runaway slave arc. It was important to main story and gave good character development and story but it did drag on for a bit longer than needed, and some monologues and backstories went on for full episodes with no other things of substance happened which became pretty boring to me. Got good again for me when Kettil got back and the story actually picked up again tho. Not saying the arc was bad or anything just felt like it didn't need to span 5 episodes, all of which are around 25 mins each and it seemed to be going in circles a bit.
    When Arhnied told her backstory it was good n all, took around half an episode and stuff which was fine and good timing ig but I got a bit bored tbh (this is on me, was binging up until this point so i mightve just gotten tired of the show for the day or something.). Then when Gardar was dying on the wagon he had his backstory and backflashes of his afterlife which was cool and shit but it did end up feeling like most of it was already shown before with Arhnied and it didn't need to take up a full episode of him slipping in and out of the afterlife. This is just personal prefrences and stuff and I really enjoyed the show all together, just think this arc didn't need to span for 5 episodes.
    (The episode with Gardar and Arhnied on the wagon was still amazing, this was just personal preferences)
    It also feels like since S1 alot less things happen in each episode, IDK if thats just because of the less action packed stuff or something but it seems like during the middle part of S2 like 2 things at max would happen each episode. Again, might just be the more peaceful setting making it seem like this or something but idk.
    Still loved S2 and the ending was amazing and I would watch again and recommend it to ppl.

    Meanwhile in the Middle East, the Abbasid Caliphate's authority is limited to just Baghdad because of a number of Turkic slave soldiers began to carve their own territories and proclaimed themselves as the Sultans while the Roman Empire based in Constantinople is losing Anatolia to the Turkic tribes. Why am I bringing the Abbasid Caliphate and the Eastern Roman Empire into this? The answer is simple. Both the Caliphate and the Empire were complex and sophisticated civilizations with great advancement in scientific and philosophical ventures but yet, no amount of members in the ulama in Baghdad or the clergy in Constantinople can helped them escape violence or settle things peacefully with the immigrating Turkic tribes. Not to mention that these were what happening out there during the lifetime of Thorfinn as well. And before the Turkic tribes even arrived from Central Asia, both the Empire and the Caliphate often crossed each other's borders to raid one another for loots and slaves. And these raids often happened when the governments of both countries are not at war with one another. In other words, the purpose of these raids during the peace time is primarily economic while the spiritual aim is the secondary concern. On many occasions, the Basileus in Constantinople have to pay tributes in many forms, from gold to books of knowledge such as the work of Ptolemy called Almagest, as a way of preventing more of the raids by the Arabs while also forbade his Roman troops from launching their own raids to preserve peace. Nothing lasted forever, including peace. And the Byzantine-Arabs Wars are the good examples of this because no matter how many times peace are concluded and how many victories the Empire and the Caliphate achieved over one another, wars and hate will never ceased to exist as long as humans remained selfish. And while Thorfinn's belief is naive, it came from a different place. Unlike Karl Fritz, whose desire to create Paradis most likely originated solely from just guilt, Thorfinn's desire for peace and a place where peoples of different races can live together originated from not just his guilt but also friendships he had with many people he befriended with on his journey. Not to mention that he also recognized the importance and distinguish what is war of survival and what is war of conquest as well. And while wars of survival can be disguised as a conquest, such a conquest happened because it is the need of the people to ensure their own survival, not to satisfy their greed.
    Also, did you see some videos about the last Roman-Persian War of 602-628? If so, then I can guess that you roughly get the picture of my Heraclius Plan already, right? To make it short, the Heraclius is a plan to save Paradis inspired by how Emperor Heraclius forced Shah Khosrow II to accept peace on his own terms.
    By the way, why do you think the people like Hange and Armin wanted peace with Marley so bad? The point is that can't they see that Marley is nothing but a bully that cannot be reasoned with?

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth  Год назад +2

      fascinating to hear what was going on in different parts of the world around the same time as the events of this story, love your comments man. i have not seen any videos on the last roman-persian war, do you have any you could recommend?
      as for your last question, i think they want peace for the same reason as the characters of vinland saga: war is destructive and they want to avoid it, both to save the lives of their own people as well as everyone else around the world. i think a character like thorfinn's reasons for being against violence are much better fleshed out, but it's still possible to see why armin and hange would do what they did. armin and hange aren't complete pacifists, though; they both would support military action against marley as long as it isn't the full on super genocide of the rumbling.

    • @lerneanlion
      @lerneanlion Год назад +1

      @@chryysanth I recommended the ones by History-Marche and kings and generals because both videos lacked certain information that can be provided by one another.
      The point of the Heraclius Plan is not only to force Marley to accept peace on Paradis' terms but to also weakened Marley's military and economy to prevent the immediate violation of peace imposed by Paradis and retaliation by Marley as well. And to make it possible, they needed to go to war when Marley is in a middle of the Marley Mid-East War because Marley will be forcing to face wars on two fronts. And if it is possible, make it three by entice a rebellion in Onyankopon's homeland as well. And of course, Zeke will most likely defected to Paradis' side in order to get close to Eren and that will make the situation worse for Marley.
      Also, you can added the Heraclius Plan and its inspiration, the last Roman Persian War of 602-628, in your next Attack on Titan video as well.

The entire point of Farmland Arc was to give Thorfin a "rebirth". In order to let him gain a new life, he needed to gain knowledge of new things. Apart from that, farming is the exact opposite of killing. Those points are the whole point.

Young kids who can’t help getting excited at mediocre storytelling skills, just because you watched marvel all your life and think this is storytelling at its finest lol

    Story > gratuitous action every time. If people don't like it there's plenty of cookie cutter Shonen anime out there for them. Season 2 turned a great series into a legendary one for me. Damn near tear up just thinking about it 😂

      @@mysteryman1876 I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that lmao. My pfp is also Kaneki. I just thought it was funny seeing somebody calling out edgelords whilst having a pfp of a character who’s considered to be very edgy. 🙂 Although I actually think Kaneki’s “edginess” is overstated. Most TG fans glorify and celebrate the worst versions of Kaneki, and his worst behaviour, just because they see it as “cool” or “badass”, and most people seem to ignore Kaneki’s psychological and emotional development from being a shy, wimpy loner to becoming a strong, confident father and husband by the end of the series. TG is a great series with the worst fans IMO.

    I and many others find the farming arc boring not because we didn't get that vinland saga was anti war, or because we want the story to be somehow less cohesive.
    But because the arc is lacking in some way. Its different for different people. But for me I found the arc to be bloated, slow, and too far from where we left off narratively. Why farming, why the time skip, why a slave, etc. In my opinion and many others. The farming, the time skip, and the manner in which Thorfin grows just wasn't entertaining.
    I've seen better and as such will judge the farming arc off its merits. Seeing how it fails to live up to my standards, its boring. When put up against other pacifist love and peace stories, the farm arc is a good example of what doesn't work. Fma, vash the stampede, and tokyo revengers, all handle love and peace better.

    The problem is a show about a pacifist is just by nature not going to be as interesting as the violent, action romp that came before it. Have you read after the Farmland Saga arc? It gets pretty terrible. I loved this arc for Thorfinn's character development too, but it just doesn't really seem to go anywhere interesting with that revelation. The series should have just ended with a time skip after Thorfinn changes.

      haven't read the manga so i can't comment on the quality after farmland, but i would for sure disagree with the claim that a story about a pacifist is inherently not as interesting as one with violence. this is a personal taste thing but stories are most interesting to me when characters develop and have struggles which resonate with me. stories don't need to be violent to be interesting, for me and the many people who liked the farmland arc at least

Build ups to underwhelming conflicts, I don't usually watch anime to see people standing around and talking then doing some harvest moon shit. Not that I think it's not okay to like that, I'm glad people can I just didn't care for it especially after the first season went so hard, I was kind of like "okay something gotta happen" for the duration of the season then it was just a guy beating a pregnant woman and I went "oh, that's just a downer it's not even hype"
