No doubt she was trained for the stage, but she understands that her gestures & expressions on film must be smaller, more subtle. I especially love how she handles the shift in tone from wistful to desperate halfway throught the score.
She really is the best Mme Butterfly I have heard. She has the inner understanding how Asian women regard love. An Asian woman grow up at that time knowing that she has no freedom at choosing her love. The love is given to whomever comes by her destiny. She is ready to give all her love to whomever life has chosen for her. She is waiting for it to come to her, ready to accept the person. She has surrendered to her unknown destiny long time ago, yet with a small hope for something that life will bless her. It is an already given love that hoping the person will cherish it. I don't hear that from Western performance mostly. The culture is very different.
For all the reasons you mention, I agree totally with you. The plaintive tone in her voice bolsters her acceptance of her fate throughout the performance and Oh! those high notes. Also she is just so delicate and musical in her pacing. Thank you for your perceptive insights. I could never have put it so clearly cuz after all I am an Irish American. :))

I get shivers every time I listen to this song! I haven't heard one singer who didn't do an astounding job singing this.
