Complicated plans are prone to failure. It's smarter to make simple but well thought out plans. But exceptionally intelligent people are very foolish when they're young. Light is very naive.

Light is directly challenging L not trying to avoid him.. by stopping it would mean light is afraid of L. but light thinks he is a god not afraid of anybody and that is what he is showing L.
I think it's partly the book. There is some magic in it that makes you want to use it. Light is idealistic and power hungry but probably not as much as the book brought out of him. Ryuk did say that the humans who get a death note are cursed.

I think everyone starts off thinking Light is more an arrogant kid who thinks he’s smart rather then him truly a genius. It takes a few episodes before you realize he’s both. I honestly don’t remember my first thoughts when I watched Death Note, but I know most of the reactors I’ve seen follow the same kind of pattern.
Right? Almost all reactors always think whatever Light is doing will blow up in his face. And that L will be smart enough to know everything about his plans... Like yes L is smartest but he has to be real too. He can't know everything. And Light takes more risks as he is willing to sacrifice everything.
One of the things I like about this show is that, while Light is smart, he's not all-knowing. He couldn't have known that Ray Penbar's last watchdog day was today, so he didn't have to kill him, which is probably gonna land him in some bigger shit. lol
technically in the manga Light said even if Ray were to leave, if they never find Kira after investigating all suspects, then someone would investigate all the suspects again, including him, probably more.
This is just straight up wrong. Sure he isn't all knowing but he does comment about how he's probably passed suspicion. The reason he does what he does is because he's trying to get closer to L and to directly challenge L.

Emperor Don’t be rude and throw insults around. Light is incredibly arrogant, he literally has a god complex. He says on multiple occasions that he sees himself as/aims to be a god. If he had simply stuck to his goal of killing only criminals and didn’t react so strongly to being challenged in any way (due to his massive ego and god complex), he never would have killed Lind L. Taylor, and L would not have discovered his exact location (the Kanto region of Japan). Light did not kill Lind L. Taylor for strategic purposes of keeping his identity hidden and pursuers off his tail, he killed him only when he was verbally challenged and provoked because he was arrogant and could not accept that someone dared to condemn his actions and moral judgements.
Light doesn't want to pause the killing, despite the risk, because he's trying to make the world believe that Kira is unstoppable. His strategy relies on Kira having as much deterrent value as possible, so his tactics are aggressive. Also, he's probably enjoying himself.
Even if it did there would be no more leads therefore he wouldn’t find light the only reason he doesn’t take that route is he wants to beat L not avoid him he knows he has to get close to him to defeat him

I think that the reason that Light's plan is "too complicated" is because he's actually based on the popular serial killer trope of a killer that leaves clues and plays games. It' about ego, and in a sense about fun.

I like that every episode makes you think about a lot of things like what exactly is justice, is there any right or wrong, etc. Also, it’s not like Light is just evil and L is good, it’s not that simple, though a lot of people tend to think that way But anyway, I really like your reactions of this show and demon slayer!
I agree. Its not your generic show of good vs evil. How is killing criminals wrong? We socially constructed those ideas that killing is bad regardless who you kill. Thats why in todays world a lot of people pity criminals. But if the criminal did the crime to them (killing their loved ones) then they wont feel pity anymore.

I think the thing that makes this such an interesting concept is the amount of detail put into the rules of the death note, even Light wants to see how far it can go, testing things like whether someone can teleport across the world if the death note says so, or if someone can write down something they don't actually know, and finally, how much detail can be put into someone's death, leading to him creating an entire scenario around it. Also it's amazing irony that Ray decided Light wasn't Kira before Light pulled off this stunt, meaning Light will kill him for absolutely no reason at all and might only draw more attention to himself
A neat little thing from the manga that the producers of the anime didn't leave in was that the girl that Light invited to the amusement park as a part of his scheme still wanted to go to the park even after everything that happened because she liked Light so much and was looking forward to the date. Light was a little annoyed by it too since he wanted to spend the day by himself iirc.

the date that shows when the person is about to die is in Shinigami time not regular human time. So humans wouldn't be able to tell when a person is about to die even with the eyes. Only Shinigami know but it's against the rules to tell to give out people's life span.

Light chooses to use a known drug addict for the bus jacking so he can convince the FBI agent that the phantom he was shooting at was a drug-induced hallucination. Also, the guy died from an accidental death rather than a heart attack, which would convince the Kira Investigation Team that he was not involved in that death. However, I think that Raye should have considered this: Light's date commented that he said he wasn't dating until after exams. Light just happened to change his mind while he's being investigated, and there happens to be a bus jacking on that same bus at the same time, and the bus jacker gets killed during this incident.
I'm glad you chose MHA and Deathnote as starter anime to react/watch since those are really good choices. There's plenty trash anime out there but you picked nice ones to start out with.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that you guys should try watching the original Japanese audio versions with English subs. The monologues and conversations are way better in their original translations, since dubbing takes away a huge chunk of character and intended feel of the show.
I don't understand how you can watch all Light's thoughts and plans yet not like him, who really cares if he's evil, it's fictional, if anything it just makes him more interesting than your generic main character.
In my opinion Light is not really evil. I dont see anything wrong with what hes doing besides him turning power hungry and all that but besides that i dont really think you can call him evil. They are not anime watchers and theyre used to watching shows/movies thats always good vs evil. In death note i dont think theres good and evil also with a lot of animes.

If you believe your goal to be necessary to save humanity, you have to be able to make morally grey decisions in order to accomplish it. I would kill a number of starving children to save the rest from starvation. In a similar strain, I would kill a number of innocent people in order to save millions or billions of others.
