The premise of this arc is that Near is like L, composed, rational and calculated. Mellow is the other side of the spectrum. emotional, cunning and ruthless. neither has anything to do with Light as much. Near is the more ethical approach to catch Kira like L. Mellow is using any means necessary to catch Kira regardless of collateral damage, committing crimes and involving innocent folk. L is superior to Near and Mellow. But if Near and Mellow could be working as a team... Unstoppable.
To be fair L set a timer if he didn't catch kira in a certain amount of time it would go off meaning he died and to alert the whammy house that he died and we learned about whammy house 3 times so it's been put in our minds there can be successors and L wasn't the only one of his kind
Both Near and Mello are representations of L's personality. Near represents L's cold and calculated side, while Mello represents the challenging and bold actions of L. Also, to clarify Mello just wants to be the 1st to catch Kira and be the "true" successor to L.
I agree. L was the best because he was equal parts of both personalities. He could make bold actions while remaining cool and logical.
Also, L did not mind going against the law and working with criminals to solve his cases. This part is totally with Mello.
In manga 13, I think. He made a statement that Near and Mello were intended to be L's sons. And Misa was the mother.

Mello and Near are way different from L. Mello is more right brained due to his emotional decision making while Near is more left brained, more logical and strategic. L is the best because he used equal parts both.
Yea but mello is better and making plans and near is smarter than L(but he has no initiative), obv L is a better detective but Near and Mello are better than him in something and if they work togheter they can surpass him
I don't know about way different. But yes, they both embody different aspects of L's personality.
Mellow is basically the part of L that is willing to work with criminals and the mafia . Its similar because L did this with a con artist and that sly little devil lady. And he has L's sweet habbit.

The thing about Mello and Near is that they're both driven by something that broke years ago, after learning about L's death. You can see how Mello is different than Near, in the fact that he needs the control and takes action, faster than L, but also being too reckless. And Near may look "cold", but he's emotional as well. You can see his distress when he learns about L's death, messing with his favorite puzzle on purpose. But he doesn't act, he just thinks and closes his mind, so he can take more calculated decisions. You can get this only from the first scene of this chapter.
Also, the way they both feel about their lives before: while Mello always calls The Wammy's House an 'institution', through the series, Near keeps calling it, the 'orphanage'.
There's another scene in this episode that the anime skipped. When Mello talks about how he doesn't get along with Near and they're always competing, he remembers holding his test results, and how everyone was praising Near, while he was stuck on second place, then showing us a panel of Mello surrounded by books, trying his hardest, but feeling inferior.
There's a lot I want to talk about these two, but since I already told as much as I can in relation to this chapter, I'll leave it here.

THE. ANIME. WAS. RUSHED. The Near and Mello arc should have been longer in the anime like it was in the manga.
The Near and Mello arc should’ve been atleast 20 or 25 ep

it's like L was divided by two,:
Near is his smart part
&
Mello it's the emotional part who loves candy and sugar , also work with criminals
Both Near and Mello together make up what makes L.
L did break laws but Mello but also worked with law enforcement like Near.
L did keep a mostly emotionless facade like Near but did have hints of more human anger and impatience like Mello.
L did have a sweet tooth for all things sugar that Mello inherited as chocolate bars but he also liked to stack things and play with his food like sugar cubes which Near is constantly stacking things or basically fidgeting with his hands with something or in his hair. (L also fidgeted at times)
I don't know how you didn't notice Near had Mello's picture with him. So it's not at the orphanage. It's with Near
If u also think about their names alphabetically it’s L, M, N. Mello & Near are the composite of L
They say Near and Mello were suppose to be L's sons. . .but the author can't imagine L having sex. .LOL

@@mattm7378 The anime hadn't come out yet, she based her outfit based on the manga. You don't know what you're talking about. Even Christina Grimmie cosplayed L for one of her songs. It just shows how iconic Death Note is in popular culture.

Guaranteed her stylist showed her 'inspiration" pics and she chose Mello. That's 100 why she said "I liked his look"

@@endless013 the death eraser isn't even canon in the manga thank god, it was part of the death note pilot chapter and was scrapped for the actual manga as far as I know

Actually for this one you don’t have to fill in the gaps, in this episode it said 2012 it and was 2006 when light was 17 although I don’t know where I remember 2006 from I think I saw it in episode 2 when he logged into his computer
No the data was delete by light, they started from 0(manga confirmed)

Should be obvious, but their names are alphabetical. It's never fully stated in the show, because it isn't that important what his name is, but L's real name is Lawliet, and then Mellow, and then Near. L M N.

They are foster brothers who grew up in the orphanage with Watari.
H. C No,they WERE supposed to be twin brothers and L would have been their father. This idea was scrapped. And just because they both grew up in the Wammy's House does not imply they're brothers. Foster brothers is'nt an excuse.

In the manga Near is smarter than L(but near lacks in initiative) and Mello has more initiative than L and tnx to his inferiority complex he has no moral or low limits, also each one is half of L, near like to play with things(as L did with sweets) and mello eats chocolate(as L ate sweets)

honestly, the best days of this series are over. The japanese movie (not the american) had a far better ending, imo..
All the movies for this show were bad. The TV show was only slightly acceptable. Most Japanese live action is horrendous.
And wtf Japan with the racist depiction of black people. That man had lips like old looney toons or Disney.
