    The read I get is that Mello is L's "get it done at all costs" side but lacks the patience to think his plans through. Near is L's "hide and play 3D chess" side but lack the emotional understanding of his opponent to play the game as L does. They're pretty fascinating conceptually.

    I think Mello is a better match against Light than Near is for the most part. Near is the most like L but Light is used to that. He and L were in a constant match trying to outmaneuver one another. Mello knows that to catch a strategizer off guard you have to do something they can't possibly predict, like hijacking a plane or using criminals to buy a missile.
    This has proven true in real life too. I think of the Siege of Alesia, when Caesar built a wall around the city. When enemy reinforcements arrived and any normal commander would have surrendered he built another wall around his army.
    Or the Ottoman siege of Constantinople when Mehmed dragged his ships several miles over land to entirely bypass the naval defenses at the mouth of the city's bay.
    Sometimes insanity can trump even the best laid plans.

    • @adamvialpando106
      @adamvialpando106 4 года назад +3

      @@cydra671 True. Neither alone could take down Light. I think Light's loss is just as much to do with his failures as their victories.
      The biggest reason I think Light lost is because he used the same strategy he used against L. By that I mean giving the Death Note to someone else. Last time it worked perfectly but he had to give up total control. The second time was different because the investigators knew about the Death Note and how it worked.
      That combined with Mikami being a wild card led to Light's loss.

    I'm sick of the wide held narrative that the Near & Mello Arc is vastly inferior to the L Arc. Most people are just salty that their favorite character (L) died and they simply can't let go. The Near & Mello Arc is amazing and Near and Mello are brilliant additions to the cast, for they not only function as a thematically meaningful continuation of the dynamic between Light and L, but both contribute significant depth to the overall themes & messages of Death Note on their own. Moreover they bring some much needed breath of fresh air, especially Mello adds some new pace, some spice to the plot - and that's why the Near & Mello Arc is so entertaining and dynamic. Honestly I think this Arc overall is even the best and most people just don't see the brilliance within it.

    L was the template, the original. He set a precedent so high that finding a replacement as alike as possible had placed an enormous amount of pressure on the candidates that one of them hated L himself so much that he wanted to defeat him, and, if I remember correctly the other killed himself. I believe the one who hated him, was so capable that he was able to figure out who L was, at least in sight, and see enough that he could mimic his behavior and habits.
    In any case, there needed to be a change of strategy by the orphanage and I think part of this change was more than allowing the kids to be themselves but accepting different ways or 'schools of thought' if you will.
    Besides that, Near and Mello are both still young and relatively inexperienced. Throughout L's career, there had been many defining moments - there had to be. Near and Mello could "act" like him if they wanted to, but that'd be fake and on their parts, disingenuous aside from that, that'd obviously lack the understanding that L had about criminals, people and even the work in general.

      Actually, you're wrong. Neither Near nor Mello received any information from L. Everything L worked on was deleted. That's why four years passed, four years for them to learn everything they could about the case. Near mentioned that he learned about the existence of the notebook, because a nearby police officer overheard the taskforce talking about it. L didn't leave any information behind for them to use.

      Here comes another speedwatcher
      L deleted all the data, so Near and Mello started from scratch. Light wouldn't beat any of them easily.
