Late flowering perennials to add some early Autumn colour to your cottage garden 🍁

  • This time of year, you might have gaps in your garden borders as the Summer flowers start to fade. Adding some late flowering plants is a great way to prolong the growing season well into October and even up to the first frost. Let me share some of my favourite plants to add colour and interest to your garden for September. The plants I have picked are all perennial, and once looked after, they will return next year.
    Chrysanthemums:
Popular in Autumn pots, door decor and cut flower bouquets. Chrysanthemum flowers in Autumn, but most of them are not frost-hardy, and you will need to store them over Winter. Some people continue to grow them indoors as a house plant in Winter.
Regular deadheading will keep them flowering into Late October /Early November.
Echinacea ( purpurea mix and sombrero yellow) Commonly known as coneflowers, the flowers are long-lived, excellent for cutting, and extremely attractive to pollinators.
The plant is frost-hardy and will return each year. You can divide the plant in March/April to create more.
I love to leave the seed heads on them over Winter for the birds to enjoy.
Heliopsis is also known as false sunflower because it resembles a sunflower but is not part of the sunflower family. A hardy perennial plant that will tolerate poor soils, they like full sun but can take a semi-shaded spot.
Most sunflowers are annuals with only one growing season, so these are a nice alternative.
Heuchera (Plum Pudding ) are great at the edge of a pot or edge of a garden border and will fill out any gaps you have with their foliage. Most Heuchera are evergreen, and they will thrive in a shady spot. They flower in Spring to early Summer, but most people grow them for their impressive foliage.
They come in various colours, from plums to rust and greens.
Helenium ( strawberry sundae): Also known as sneezeweeds, these flowers like plenty of water and sun to thrive. You may need to stake them if they get too tall. Deadhead to prolong the flowering. These are also perfect for cut flower bouquets.
Rudbeckia (Little Gold Star, Goldstrum, American gold rush) )
Also known as a coneflower or Black Eyed Susan. These flowers like the sun; they won't flower as well in the shade and will wilt in a dry Summer. Their seedheads look nice over Winter and provide food for birds and shelter for insects.
Verbena ( bonariensis lollipop ) A great flower to add height to a border, you often find butterflies sitting on the flowers. They flower from July until the first frost and love full sun and well-drained soil.

Hi Catherine 👋 I plant hardy mums ( chrysanthemums) in the fall. Most of the time I let them die off then trim short in the spring and I will get them to grow back most of the time. So the ones I have are 2 yrs old and just getting ready to bloom. I live in Southern Ontario Canada and we do get below freezing temperatures and snow.
I do lose a couple but mostly from neglect. 😂

Another great video, thanks Catherine! I'd like to recommend one of my favourite perennials, for fabulous colour at this time of year....Japanese Anemone. I have two varieties, a very tall (5-6 feet) white one, "Honerine Jobert", and a shorter (2feet) called "September Charm". Both are just starting to bloom in my garden ( mid-Vancouver Island) and will go for months yet. Whenever someone new sees my garden at this time of year, it's the J. Anemone that people go mental over , and of course, I always have a few cheeky plants potted up for sale, which helps pay for next year's garden. They make good cut flowers, and look like butterflies in the garden. Big love from Vancouver Island ❤❤

aren't they all beautiful Catherine. Love all those Autumnal colours even in the house. The word 'Purpurea' is just Latin for purple leaved plant, you'll see it a lot on labels, like say with the Acers (maples), Heuchera. You're great you are learning, great that you are taking notes. Verbena bonariensis, love it. It like hovers over the tops of everything and looks like a frothy mist of colour, really pretty, again you can get different varieties of this, some smaller compact type and a very petite one that I have that looks like almost thin black strands of stem with tiny flourescent purple flowers dotted along. You are an inspiration.

If the mums are labelled as "hardy" they can usually winter outside as they are perennials. If not labelled as such, they are usually annuals. I live in zone 5b in canada and I have hardy mums in the ground which have been coming back up for quite a number of years now.

Beautiful colours in your garden. The RHS is the best & most reliable source for your plant info the books are expensive but worth it as an investment. Good luck with your tv show 😊 Marie did tours of her garden its definitely worth a visit its stunning she is part of the Dublin garden trail such a lovely person well worth a visit the garden trail is a beautiful collection of gardens, check out Ardan garden in Howth they open Saturdays for viewings!

2021 I emailed Monty Don's pa at the BBC just saying that it would be a good idea to have him visit you. All the work you do in your garden and introducing the subject to a younger audience via you tube. A more youthful approach to gardening was the topic. She emailed back to say she would pass it on? Hope something comes of it. I just had the vision of you opening your front door and collapsing at the site of the Monty himself.

Catherine your garden has burst into colour and fullness.
What about putting in water crystals for those plants that are too dry.
We've had beautiful weather here in Canberra, Australia but then most states got hit by a massive cold front. OMG it's freezing and the mountains have snow again. Too early for some plants for us because of the frost but then the days were hot and are about to be again. Our mango farmers have already said that their crops have been affected, other crops will be too. Won't be as much around as normal. 😢

Hi . Try putting your astilbes by a drain pipe (where the rain water drains off your roof). That may solve both your problems.

Could you mean confirmation bias? Meaning that you find evidence for what you want/is looking for. As for Astilbe, I’ve had luck with them in the shade, in terrible soil. But they needed water, for sure 😊

I had a beautiful show of echinacea until yesterday afternoon when one of the local cats (an extremely large tabby) had a fight with an exceptionally large rat in the middle of them all and destroyed them (the cat killed the rat and kindly left it in the middle of the lawn for me 🥴)

    • @DaintyDiaries
      @DaintyDiaries  11 месяцев назад

Thriving, the leaves do turn colour later in the season but mine are still green. Could it be a watering issue? They need a lot of water in their first year x
