    Echinacea aka cone flower is one of my favorite perennials, the main reason is and you dont hear people talk about it and you didn't mention it either, is the aroma. I love that smell I wish I could bottle up and sell it as a cologne LOL. I would wear it ha. Also I get a lot of goldfinches coming to eat on these they are acrobats in the air. They are a treat to watch. Thanks David .

      We love to watch the little birds too, it is great fun😊and nice to know we are helping to provide some much needed sustenance, and with larger shrubs and trees, places for shelter and nesting and sometimes safety from predators too.
      The fragrance of Coneflowers is often over looked, so thank you for drawing out attention to this also.
      It is appreciated by all of us.

    I’ve got 2 of the SunSeekers Rainbow in my garden this year and they are my absolute favorite echinacea I’m growing right now. The flowers are stunning, last a very long time and new flowers just keep coming. I’m desperate to find the SunSeekers Salmon. I just bought some coneflowers! I don't think they are the sunseekers your showring, but beautiful and big. I also noticed I already have some that need some help. More than a few flowers have popped up this year that my mom must have planted that I have discovered. In the spring when they are small some plants and herbs look like weeds to me! I let some grow and they turned out to be flowering plants. 😃

    Love my coneflowers! They are visited by pollinators, gold finches alike! I leave mine up all winter (we’re near Niagara Falls Canada), for the birds! Only cut back in Spring after warmer weather comes back. I only dead head a few, leaving many up for my pollinators. They produce lots of babies for the next year and I can move them around my garden!

      That is interesting. I’ve been trying to attract goldfinches to my feeders. They didn’t start showing up until I planted some coneflowers. Don't know where all your goldfinches are in your neighborhood, because in our gardens and nursery they LOVE the seeds of Coneflowers, and it is such a joy to see they come and go.
      David says he tries to have it both ways....., He dead heads them during the main part of the summer so we can all enjoy them, and then as late summer and Autumn arrives, he likes to leave them to set their seedheads from the birds to enjoy.

    These have always been my absolute favorite flower. I was at the local nursery and when I saw an orangey-red colored one, it took my breath away. There was no doubt that she was coming home with me, lol. Ive had it for about 3 weeks and I just noticed the main stem is split vertically in a few places and the amazing color that it originally had is a dull pink. I lost my beautiful purple echinacea that I grew from seed to some kind of small white worm that bore into the roots last year. I would love any help with this, I dont want to lose this one too😢 im in Montreal zone 5

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  15 дней назад +1

      Thanks for reaching out.
      With your split stem, just trim it back beneath the split and in no time the plant will send up new shoots and more flowers.
      Regarding the insect eating the roots - it sounds like maybe vine weevil or some other grub. This would need to be diagnosed by an expert so consider contacting your local Dept of Agriculture / Extension service or talk to any local master gardeners (if you know any) and maybe the experts at your local garden center may be able to help too.

    Beautiful! I love coneflowers. The multi layer petal ones are my favorite but I like the more traditional single petal as well.
    I'm curious if the more unique varieties will grow true from seed or revert?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, we are very fond of them too.
      These selections will not come true from seed, that's why they have to be vegetatively reproduced, and in fact if people do not dead head them, they will often throw vigorous growing seedlings that are liable to display the dominant single flowered purple-pink characteristics of the species (Echinacea purpurea) and why sometimes people think they have reverted, when in fact they are new strong growing seedlings that grow up and take over.
      That's why it is important to deadhead the plants regularly, this prevents reseeding and also as you've probably noted in this video encourages rebloom and a much longer ;lasting display.
      Remember Coneflowers need plenty of sun and free draining soil conditions, they will disappear if the soil lies damp and wet especially in winter or early spring, so if you decide to try them make sure the soil drains well. Other than that, they are easy to grow, last well and make terrific garden plants for summer color.

      Thank you, it is very kind of you to take the time to tell us, thanks for the subscription.
      You can separate them in Autumn, but David 's favorite time is early spring, that way the newly divided pieces don't have to sit in wet, possibly (at times) saturated and frozen conditions during the winter. So the success rate is likely to be higher doing it in early spring before growth starts.
      Don't forget to keep us posted of progress, we will be interested to hear how you get on. Also, as you view any of our other videos (here on this channel), it would be great if you could kindly share any of them (that you find useful) with your friends too.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  8 месяцев назад +1

      They are derived from hardy native species, so for most of us hardiness is not an issue. The main thing is to make sure they have good winter drainage, they just do not like wet soggy conditions. Often they can cope with this during the summer growing period but winter is a different matter, so gritty, sandy, even rocky soils in elevated positions will ensure long term survival and stockier, sturdier plants too.

      In our testing, as we find any that are not perennializing well, they are discontinued.

      It is wise to dead head Coneflowers regularly, and as you have probably noted, it keeps them flowering longer and also helps to prevent vigorous pinkish-purple seedlings emerging in subsequent years. They frequently out grow the original plants to take over and make it look like the plants have reverted color.

      Yes. Alternatively, you could cut off the tops when the cones are fully formed, tie them in a bundle and put them in a paper bag and store them in a cool, dry place.
      This might be the better option, because once the seed heads form, there's a race on between you and little birds like goldfinches and chickadees etc. They LOVE Coneflower seeds, and it is one of the joys that David loves to see in his garden.

    What is the hardiness zones for these new varieties of Echinacea? Certain series did not survive my 5 b winters. Since your new series is named “ Sun Seekers”, does this imply that they require more sun than other Echinacea, which do well without a full day of sunshine? Are the water requirements the same, and also soil preferences?
    I loved all that you introduced today and will look for them in local nurseries. All beautiful👍

      @joanp105. Same here. I am in zone 5a and all the new hybrids I bought over several seasons did NOT survive even an average winter. I have never lost any older, traditional Echinaceas. The older tall varieties have survived a MINUS 24 degree winter here.

    • @OverdevestNurseries

      The hardiness levels of our Echinacea selections are detailed on the tags and on our "Grown by Overdevest" website: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Echinacea
      Over the years, we have tested and trialed many selections, and as we sometimes joke "We've killed many plants... so you don't have to"! 😉😂👏
      This process is on going all the time, and obviously as we discover frailties and weaknesses, any that do not measure up, are discontinued. 👎😉
      That's a process that the experts at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ go through too, we share information with them all the time, and of course they know a lot about your local conditions. Which is why it is always good to be in touch with them and get their input.
      Most of the newer ones have a complicated genetic background (involving several native species) which not only includes hardiness but also (as you correctly mention), soil conditions and light levels too. That's why in David's videos you will often hear him regularly stress "good drainage and plenty of sun".
      He tells us that he successfully grows several in partially shaded sites, but they always do better out in sunny spots and above all, survive best in FREE DRAINING sites.
      So, you can be assured that the ones we offer through our garden centers have gone through our trialing process and represent the best that we (and other experts) have encountered so far.
      Getting back to survivability and reliability in our region, it is our experience that the selections that are closer to the original Echinacea purpurea species seem to be better able to perform best in less and ideal conditions.
      We hope this helps explain more.

      David suggests keeping records of the ones you are trying, then watching which ones seem to be the best attractors and obviously planting more of them.
      In his garden, he says he finds ones like Echinacea Magnus to be amongst the most popular.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  10 месяцев назад +1

      That's probably because the original plants set seed and the new seedlings had the dominant genetic characteristics of the Echinacea purpurea species.
      Obviously, dead heading (removal of the seed heads) will prevent this from happening, and selection of the best perennializing strains together with good winter and early spring drainage means that they will last well as perennials.
      In our trials, we test the selections we offer for their ability to perennialize and persist, and we make a point of discontinuing the ones that we discover to be not good at perennializing.
      That's why these selections are still under evaluation, and as you watch the other videos here on this channel, you will often hear David stress "good drainage" and talk about the ability of the various selections to persist well. Preliminary findings suggest that these "SunSeekers" also perennialize well, but that is something that obviously takes years to determine, so stay tuned.....
      Meanwhile, the experts at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ will be able to guide you with suggestions for the ones that we have found to persist well in our trials.

      The one thing they need.... is good drainage!
      They will like the sand but the red clay is a problem! Digging the holes and amending the soil is good step but you probably need to elevate the soil level so that it doesn't lie wet in winter/ early spring. We have the same problem in our trial garden and to overcome that, as you will see in this video on Lavender (another perennial that needs good drainage), we made raised beds: ruclips.net/video/JS2UFJIm6yY/видео.html
      So you might try that in a small area and see how it works.

    I usually love EVERYTHING David showcases but wow, I will pass on these. They have hybridized most of the unique characteristics of the Echinacea OUT of these varieties. Pretty flowers but they don't have the glorious tall robustness of the true coneflowers. I know the trend is for breeders to make compact neat little varieties of many of the larger perennials so they will be short with stiffer stems and not prone to flop over in small suburban gardens these days. So many of these new perennials are all starting to resemble marigolds with the tight neat short habit. I will take the traditional slightly messy, sprawling grand older varieties like "Doubledecker" any day! Yes, they are untidy, flop over and can require some staking but are show stopping in bloom and NOTHING attracts pollinators like the older varieties.

      In our trialing and testing process we go to a lot of trouble to offer only the selections that represent the best value, that includes continually selecting the best ones that perennialize well, and over the years we have discontinued the ones have failed to meet our high standards. Therefore, when you visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ and see the ones that have our tags on them, you can be assured that they have gone through this rigorous process.
      Most of the varieties in our line up are vegetatively produced so they will retain their habit and color and be true to name.
      That said, to grow and persist successfully Coneflowers need plenty of sun and free draining soil conditions, so when choosing a site make sure the soil does not lie wet (especially in winter or early spring). Also, it is important to know that if they are not dead headed (old fading flowers removed) they will produce seed, which leads to vigorous, strong growing seedlings that often inherit the pink-purplish characteristics of the main original species (Echinacea purpurea), and because they are so strong growing they are likely to crowd out or take over from the original plants.
      So, that why it is important to deadhead the plants regularly, to prevent this self-seeding. As well as encouraging rebloom and of course a longer display period.
      We hope this explains more about these lovely plants and how you can get the most from them.

Overall it wasn't difficult, but doing it with plants that were already large complicated things. I'd say do it when you know you're going to have a stretch of nice weather like the fall/spring so you can go at an easy place and take breaks if it feels overwhelming. It only did to me because it was something I hadn't done before. But now I want to put it everywhere.
      As for fungal diseases, this year in the Dallas area it was hot and humid as usual but not much rainfall. And it's the first time I didn't have powdery mildew.

      As the other kind contributors mention, its important to try to keep the foliage as dry as possible especially at night and in an open, sunny location that has plenty of air movement.
      The other thing is that it if your plants get ugly and "yukky" looking, take a tip from David and shear them back to the ground, so that they can regenerate with fresh new growth and in a few weeks start flowering again. Removing (and raking up) all the infected foliage will not only make the place look better but it will also provide the stimulus for new fresh growth.
      Likewise, a fall and early spring clean up will go along way to reduce disease incidence too.

      We deliver our plants to hundreds of leading garden centers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeaster states: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/
      The objective is to try to get them to their destinations within 24 hours of leaving the nursery, so they are available for selection when they are fresh and in their prime.
      That means that unfortunately garden centers in Arkansas and other Southern Central states will not be able to stock our plants.
      However, that does not stop you being able to access our information and David's helpful tips and suggestions. So, we hope you will be able to continue to watch and learn.

      We understand. Today there's an increasing demand for short, stocky plants, that ship easily, planted in mass displays, and don't need staking and support.
      But, we agree, there's something rather special about seeing beds and borders that have taller, imposing plants that fit in towards the middle and back of plantings too, and of course, if you are into flower arranging, then the ones with good long stems are the best.
      Thankfully, we offer a nice selection of plants that mature to taller heights, so when you are visiting any of our partnering garden centers:grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ be sure to check out the tags, and of course take a little extra time to scroll through our many videos here on this channel and then you'll be ready to pick them up when you get around to visiting.

    I cant even keep a flower on my sunseekers rainbow variety. The rabbits eat them up right away. Anyone know how to keep those rascally rabbits off my plant ?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  28 дней назад +2

      A ring of chicken wire is probably the best option. It can be frustrating, because once rabbits get a taste for something like this, they are hard to stop. Especially of there's a family of them, because the older ones teach the babies.
      David says, if you do decide to erect a ring of galvanized chicken wire be sure to bend a few inches of it outwards at the base, to stop them from borrowing under it.
      At some pf our partnering garden centers you will often find animal deterrents and peppers etc. which you can sprinkle around your plants to provide temporary protection. But to work, these will have to be replenished frequently (especially after rain).
      to give you a little comfort, David adds that he has noticed (that in his experience), once clumps become older and fully established, with "woodier", tougher stems. Rabbits will often hop on by and leave them alone!
      So, that's why we suggest protecting them with the chicken wire for the first few years. Up to this point, the young, juicy, lush (and presumably "tasty") stems are vulnerable.
      We hope this helps, have you subscribed to our channel?

      These selected hybrids do not come true from seed. They have to be propagated by vegetative means, and easiest way to do that is to split (divide) them once they become established. As well as increasing your quantity of plants, it also helps to keep them vigorous and healthy. Here's a link to another of our videos (also on this channel), that will take you through the process: ruclips.net/video/1dGw_IAFLD8/видео.htmlsi=sZANygzvOIzW-zgO

    I recently lost 5 “Lakota Fire” cone flowers due to caterpillars. The gardening community told me to let them eat. You know… butterflies, pollinators. Now they are stripped and are all dead. What a shame.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  9 месяцев назад +1

      They are probably not dead, just defoliated!
      In fact by now, your plants have probably regenerated from the base (sorry to be a bit slow in responding to your comment) and they may even be getting ready to flower again before the on set of cold autumnal weather.
      Most perennials are remarkably resilient and often have a wonderful way of coping with weather conditions and things like this.
      As long as you have the fundamentals of good culture in place (plenty of sun and free draining soil), we expect you should see them rebound and in time look as good as new 😉
      No immediate rush, but when time allows it would be great if you can keep us all updated.

      Sometimes, you just have to take it on the "chin" and call it quits🙁
      Deer, Rabbits, Groundhogs, Japanese Beetles etc. there's always something that poses a challenge!
      But if you ever do decide to venture forth again, let us suggest that you take a look at Echinacea Pica Bella: ruclips.net/video/oqcwjxzWZps/видео.htmlsi=LxuIqJ6nkXQqu-pQ it emerged as the top performer in the 3 year trials at Mt, Cuba and in David's home garden he has had Echinacea Magnus and Pink Double Delight: ruclips.net/video/Yk6_jHU-bE8/видео.htmlsi=V8cpvGIsZJcTAW-L persist there for over 20 years.
      The key of course is plenty of sun and good drainage (especially in winter and early spring), they just will not do in wet, sudden and clay based soils.
      So, if your conditions are not suitable we would be the first to encourage you to take another approach, there's plenty of really good plants that thrive in those conditions and while its tedious and annoying there's things we can do to try to thwart those pesky critters too.

      This is David. Thanks everyone for your kind suggestions and support. It is very much appreciated.
      We often try to take pictures and video in the evening light (it is a beautiful, even precious time of day), the colors are often warmer and softer and very nice, but sometimes in the setting sun, they come out with unrealistic red and orange hues etc. too. So, we are mindful of this.
      But, the main thing to mention is that often, we have to fit it in with all the other activities that are going on in our busy nursery. That's why during a typical day, there's a lot to get through, and why often in our videos you will hear the distracting noises of passing trucks, tractors, irrigation whirring etc. etc.
      Also, its important to mention that we are humble nursery people (not professional videographers or film makers), so what you are seeing (with all our flaws, crinkles and mistakes) is authentic, real life stuff.
      The main thing of course, is to view the plants in all their glorious reality and that's why after hopefully you get the information. You will be able to visit some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ to see and perhaps select the ones that have the colors that appeal to you most.
