@@shanecraigtech I probably should have stated more in my first response but I’m not basing these phone entirely off of benchmarks I’m basing them off of personal use case where they were pure garbage and under preformed in every way! There haven’t been one pixel device to run smoothly and I’ve owned them all. Nexus phone were the only ones that ran fast and fluid on low end specs. My point is Google shouldn’t sell a device that isn’t up to pair with the competition and call it pro especially when 99 percent of all its pro features are done not on device but in the cloud behind a pay wall. These new pixels look so good and if reviewers are correct the hardware is miles ahead of what they ever had in past phones so I’m excited to still give them another try and see if they actually deliver in performance and day to day tasks. I always have an iPhone and I always have an android phone. I’m a two phone guy so, with that said I could be proven wrong with the 9 pros but I’ve always had high hopes and always was proven correct with these phones being trash. Also have you seen the videos of the cameras? Laggy and stuttering when switching focal lengths and not looking very promising. So eventually we will see. Google doesn’t have a great track record with supporting devices.

What this nonsense about being, G4 has modern ARM cores for petes sake. There hasnt been a slow mobile CPU in years from anyone.
You guys realize that many smartphone manufacturers optimize clock speeds and software to run these benchmarks programs to achieve the highest score possible. Benchmarks are a marketing tool period.

Yeah but things load in 1 second when they could load in .94 seconds LOL. Phones are so fast now days it doesn't make a noticeable difference to mass majority. Benchmarks are just a selling/marketing thing. Does it make reliable phone calls does it take fantastic pics and videos then that is the phone I want. My main gripe is the Pixel 8 pro takes a slow a$$ 50mp picture. I don't know if the 9 Pro resolves this issue.

The thing that concerns me is I want to know how hot the battery got. Both Samsung and iPhone are known to intentionally pull back to protect the battery. If the outside of the device was 48C (and if you look closely in his video he even found a 51C reading), I have a hard time believing the battery was any less than 46C, which would likely put it around 4C higher than the Samsung would allow.

This is confusing to me because I don't care about benchmarks but most of the latest reviews on this have mentioned how it slows down at times and lags when opening images or other very basic stuff and it's been a constant thing I've noticed being repeated over and over. If part of the RAM is dedicated to AI and can't be used by other tasks then it makes sense but I can't overlook lagginess for something I have no use for at all (AI). If I'm wrong I'm glad and I'll get the device since I can get it for 60% off via trade-in but it's been mentioned so many times I don't think I am?

Aside from the “benchmarks”, one concern I have is the use of AI. I use is minimally on my S24U and it has no real impact on speed. I am testing AI tools on my 15ProMax and there it has a noticeable speed and battery impact (yes, I know it’s a beta). What is the impact Gemini will have on the 9 Pro/9 Pro XL? There's a few things I would say about that test.
Firstly, if it's supposed to represent a real world test, having it not sitting flat on a table is probably best. I know all three of them were in the same conditions, but I've had all sorts of phones overheat when you do this. Technically, having it elevated is more "real world" as it's closer to how it would behave in hand.
Secondly, on my fold 6, I've tweaked my heat settings with thermal guardian. You can adjust the heat thresholds as well as screen dimming. It's possible that the default is too conservative, and you can see the s24's temps are actually lower, when it closes multi window, which is the first thing Samsung does when the heat goes too high. Once I've tweaked this default, I've had a hard time getting multi window to crash, even in very similar situations as the test.

Tensor G4 is a higher clocked Tensor G3. And for me the benchmarks are indicative of the performance. In theory they do not matter. However, my Pixel 8 Pro lags and stutters in all and every app, while my Xperia 1V does not. Are developers optimizing the apps for Sony? I don't think so. Tensor G3 feels and is inferior to SD Gen 2 in every single way. Don't get me wrong. I love Pixels and I have the 7, the 8 Pro, the tablet and the watch 2. But we need to be true to ourselves. I am quite disappointed. I was expecting G4 to be a modified Exynos 2400 which is good this year. Oh well...

    • @shanecraigtech
      @shanecraigtech  4 месяца назад +5

G4 uses a different core count and each core type is upgraded, so that's not exactly accurate. I won't dispute that your Pixel 8 Pro "lags and stutters in every app," but I will tell that isn't normal lol.

What I've understood about the reviews is that the device is quite laggy in basic use like opening photos or taking them, and this is because part of the RAM has been dedicated to AI exclusively and the phone can't actually use it for other tasks. For someone who doesn't care about AI and needs a smooth experience I think I will pass. I'm probably going for OP Open.

Tokens per second refers to their large language model performance, this is the ability to generate outputs at speed. So for example if it needs to re-write a sentence of c.60 words (~45 tokens), it should take around a second. The "capable" part though very variable I imagine, it would depend on things like RAM availability, heat etc - probably more sensitive than the CPU based tasks.

Benchmarks are really just a number to display how good the device is, but considering how many of them have been cheated on or modified the phone's performance to get a better number shows how silly they are nowadays. Benchmarks don't show that one plus has had an issue with a severe delay when switching apps or how much Samsung has to throttle down in order to sustain performance.
That's why, generally, iPhones perform very well in the long run since they focus on sustained performance over a long period of time and work on their weaknesses, which I think is smart that Google is focusing on. Only time will tell to see if after seven years the phone performs as good as it did at launch. Even if some apps take a long time to load, there are many older iPhones that still perform really impressively for how old they are.

Here’s my opinion if you’re selling a device between $1000 and upwards of $2000 and your chip set isn’t up to par with apples chip set or the snapdragon chip set you are not allowed to charge that kind of price. It’s not a flagship device at that point Hardware is useless without good software and Samsung and Apple‘s track record have delivered great hardware with great software google on the other hand, the founder of android which you would think would have fantastic software their software is laggy slow and it’s a pile of garbage and their devices hardware have not been up to par with the pricing that they charge so with these new devices, the hardware, according to reviewers are fantastic, but having a chip set, which literally helps with the day-to-day operations run smoothly not being up to par with its competitors is a joke. You want to tell me that you
Are going to support these new devices for seven years with a chip set That matches the specs of devices from five years ago, but yet it’s going to run for the next seven years smoothly, not a chance

I can't believe how many people are missing the point of this video. Synthetic benchmarks are not a good way to determine if a phone is fast or not.
You're saying that it's not up to par with the other chips. How are you determining that? Clearly, you're looking at synthetic benchmark scores and ignoring real world performance. My question will be why are you doing that? Why are you throwing out performance that matters in exchange for benchmark scores that don't translate anything in the real world?

@@shanecraigtech I totally get your point of the video and I agree with you but coming from a pixel user since the pixel one and every single device has been a slow laggy pile of garbage has proven to me that having a chip set capable of hand handling day-to-day tasks, and being able to have the power to run these modern apps and games and processes really matters I don’t care that the benchmarks are showing low numbers I care about day-to-day use and Google with their pixel phones have always under delivered on performance always now with that said I will purchase these new pixel phones. I haven’t figured out which one I want yet and I will give it another shot because the hardware is too good to pass so I’m gonna give them another chance, but their track record has been bad that’s my point.

@@BananaBlooD9517 yes because I am a tech nerd. I buy quite a lot of different phones from different manufacturers and I swap them out on a regular that’s one of my hobbies so I invest a lot of time and money into mobile phones. every year one manufacturer does me dirty. It’s either Samsung with the note 7 Apple with the iPhone 6 with Bengate. LG G6 with its issues ,Google pixel with her bad laggy software goes on and on. But I love the hardware and experiencing all the new features that each platform offers so regardless of their downfall, I still purchase and I still go in to the purchase with a open mind and a hope that their software will be improved with every new generation or phone most of the time I’m disappointed by a few things With each device but nothings perfect. It still doesn’t take away from the fact that companies have gotten used to selling unfinished products that are not polished like for example Apple and their horrible new software that is in no way shape or form ready for public use but yet they still release it with tons of bugs And people that love iPhones eat it up and just ignore the problems and deny it and try to say that Apple is the best and has zero flaws, which is BS! I may be harsh on manufacturers and call them out on their BS, but that’s because I am a tech lover, and I am always wanting to have the newest tech and with that comes essentially being a beta tester to new technologies, which usually come with problems. also, I’ve never complained about their price. Google pixel phones have always had great pricing. I’m clearly stating they are claiming these phones are pro devices while charging over $1000 but yet only giving you 128 gigs of storage with a chip set that has benchmarks of devices from 4 to 5 years ago. But we will see if Google has finally figured out how to optimize their hardware with their software. This is why I will purchase one of the new pixel phones this year and use it as my main device alongside my iPhone.(which I use for business.) and once Samsung releases their as 25 lineup, I will trade in my Google pixel and get the next Samsung device and then I repeat that process throughout the year when other phones are released.

Benchmark scores don't tell the whole story. I can tell you I've used every brand and despite Pixels not having high scores like Apple and Samsung, it's more smooth in my experience. You don't buy Pixels for raw power just like you don't buy Apple for customization or Samsung for a light skin. Not everyone puts that much emphasis on having the highest geekbench scores.

The embargo ends tomorrow, so we should see some meat on the bones.
I always say that OS and software integration and optimization are the future. We have reached a point where chips are overkill, as they can only sustain performance with active cooling. That is where Google and Apple dominate over Samsung and its rivals. Instead, these rivals chase specs and features to sway consumers to make up for worse optimisation.
I have had many Pixels, and my Pixel 8 Pro gets me through two days with around 3 hours of SOT per day.

Realisticly on the cpu side of things the tensor g4 and snapdragon 8 Gen 3 use very similar arm cores, with the big- little distribution being 1-5-2 for the snapdragon vs 1-3-4 for the Tensor, other than some architectural differences they shouldn't feel too different in daily use

@NLiukonen the issue is samsungs manufacturing process. They are just not as good as TSMC if you need to know how bad they where I hope they arnt as bad any more look at the snapdragon 8 gen 1 vs the 8 gen +1 literally the same processor minus a small frequency boost across cpu cores and gpu, and also the gpu's are different for both of the processor so slightly different cpu config very different gpu, Qualcomm is I house vs googles arm reference design which often times prove to be slower than anything Qualcomm has offered generation after generation.

Looking at that @5:00 that temp for the pixel 9 concerns me as this is one of my main gripes I had with the pixel 8 pro. I hated how hot the thing got at times just from general use. Devil's advocate here: What if Google 's performance is good because they allow a higher heat limit at the expense of internal longevity ie.battery (which is well known to degrade under heat). On the other hand, we rarely run our phones that hot so Google's philosophy of allowing it to run hotter is actually better in everyday use.

Tensor is just a exynos, with a custom npu and arm reference gpu cores. So to me I feel like it's international Galaxy S22 vs US Galaxy S22. Ideally they are supposed to be the same phone but one uses Qualcomm and the other uses Samsung Exynos cpu but everyone felt cheated with the international version. Even tho the s22 was a better performer than the pixel 7 both versions but because the snapdragon not only scored better in benchmarks but generally had better battery life they still felt cheated even though the UI experience and day to day use was pretty much the same.

For most people if a phone doesn’t have the latest and best Snapdragon then the phone is slow, and the funny thing is most people who complain about that don’t do anything that needs that type of performance. I bet if you would take their “super fast” phone without them even knowing and take out that Snapdragon and put in any other processor in it they would never even know the difference. Some will say I play games on my phone, and yeah sure maybe what once or twice in the time you have the phone. So still if you want to pay more way more for that Snapdragon then hey sure it’s your money, but it’s a waste of money and it’s just a way for these phone companies to charge more for their phones for no reason.

Another way to look at this is that some people don't care about benchmark numbers when they don't seem to have a whole lot of bearing on actual performance. This seems completely reasonable to me. Now, if somehow the pixel 10 does score really highly in benchmarks I'm sure there will be people who will brag about that, but it's still not something that's going to interest me. I care how the phone actually performs in my hand, not how good it is at a benchmark.
