Thanks for the detailed comparison. It seems like the Tensor G5 is the one to get since it'll do away with the hardware that's currently holding the Tensor SoC back, especially in terms of signal strength and power consumption (I know it also lags behind the comletition in benchmark tests but that's not a huge deal for me since it's already plenty fast enough for my use based on my brief experience with the G4 in the Pixel 8).
I have the pixel 7 pro so the G2 im waiting for the pixel 10 to come out. I'm excited that they missed there internal deadline date because it means that the end product they release is going to be a little more mature than it would have been. So closer to a second gen for its first release which hopefully means it'll come out with a bang!
Is the Tensors lack of performance in comparison to other chipsets because Google is focusing on efficiency/heat management? or it because they don’t want to increase the price of their phones by using Qualcomm and what ever their latest snapdragon chipset is?
If they charged a mid range price for a mid range SoC, then it would not have mattered much. But they are charging a flagship price for a mid range SoC.
It's frustrating that Google names its devices after Brazilian locations like "Abrolhos" and "Janeiro" but doesn't make those devices available in Brazil.
I'll wait for the P10. This is a Tensor G3+ basically. I thought Google will use the Exynos 2400 found on the S24 and S24+, this processors runs great on these galaxies.
Given that the current G4 is being used in the Pixel 9, will the previously planned G4 be released in short order as the G5 on a variant of the Pixel 9, or will it be spun-off to another product? I cannot see how google would sit on that chip until the Pixel 10 given that it will only be further behind in a years time when Pixel 10 is released as it would probably be competeing against the SD 8 Gen 5.
Watching on my Pixel 9 Pro XL I don't play games on a phone so this phone is perfect for me, i just need a nice camera and clean Android user interface. 😍
Honestly these companies would be just as well to not even tell people which processor powers their device anymore. We've reached a point of absurd performance in terms of what these devices are capable of. Things like the modem and connectivity etc should be the primary focus with these new devices. Call quality, screen quality, things people actually care about rather than how much CPU power that their device is capable of but never actually uses in day to day.
Out of topic but does ARM's DSU support a nona-core CPU configuration of one X2s, four A710s and four A510s in a single cluster? I know that a nine-core CPU is possible proven by the Tensor G3 and the scrapped Exynos 2300, but is it possible?
They just barely catched up to Asus ZenFone 9(released in 2022) SDM8+ 16+256GB. Feel so bad to this processor as its looks beautiful, will absolutely make a great gift to your girl for her back to school season.
Using pixel 8. Really good hardware. Not the sensibility of the glass, too sporadic reaction sometimes. Tensor processors are a good extra as on pixels without it, much less versatility in "AI" apps. New phone I will not buy yet for sure, will wait for pixel 11.
Honestly the biggest upgrade for the pixel series this year is,by far, the new design and the new modem. I love my pixel phones but their designs were always lacking. This is finally the year I can say ok thats a nice premium looking design. I will upgrade for sure from my pixel 7 pro.
This upgrade is like when apple moved from A15 to A16. Just like apple google has only changed the things that can give their processor lower power draw. Personally I feel if they upgrade the sensors and lenses in the pixel 9 these phones will sell like hot cake
Its a chip for mobile phone, the first thing should be discussed is modem if your phone is not connecting properly to the mobile network what is the use of it, G3 is having issues with connecting to 5G and they using the same modem on G4 so there will be that same issue, having improved on other part of the cores and not getting connected to the network is like you can call it a use less chip.
It shows that Google's smartphone development isn't their priority and so they aren't as serious as Samsung or Apple for example. Google's smartphone leaks come out a lot faster compared to Apple or Samsung. But to Google's credit, they are still trying something it's just that they don't promote the Google Pixel smartphone as being one of the fastest or one of the best. For the general population, it goes like this in my opinion:If you buy a smartphone you buy an iPhone, if you don't like IOS you buy Samsung but if performance isn't your priority and you want to be different you consider Google Pixel.
Great vid Gary! As long as it can use Gemini Nano on-device I´m happy. And it seems I'll be eligible buying the Pixel 9 Fold in my country, even if my wife will kill me 😁
No problem with not being as powerful as its competitors but it should at least be be more energy efficient. And we all know how crazy pixels heat. That’s the only reason stopping me from switching to Google pixel.
It's fine. I still haven't seen any ai feature that I would be compelled to use regularly. They are all just throwing everything on the wall to see what will stick.
Google's constant excuse that they are not after top performance just doesn't cut it. All phones besides 'gaming' ones, are not after performance as their main goal, however they use what the current tech has to offer. Google just doesn't.
I my opinion besides Pixel products are available only in 17 countries the other reason why they sell very low quantity is this not so good chip. They really should make a custom deal with Qualcomm and have them make a custom chip for Pixel products. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Qualcomm chips are by far the best out there!
I have a pixel 6a and i was really looking forward for the upgrade this year , i am not a gamer so i dont think i care as much because at this point its not just the performance but the other things as well, people dont buy pixel for performance, they but it for software mostly and camera as long as that is good and there is significant upgrades there , i dont see this as a major reason to not upgrade
The Tensor SoC falls short compared to its competitors, especially Apple’s A series. Google’s saving grace is its impressive AI, which I doubt Apple’s can match-but we’ll see come September. If Apple makes a surprising leap in AI while maintaining its superior A series SoC, Google could be in trouble again. At least they have the Pixel Fold for the hipsters, something Apple likely won’t release this year. I might have considered a Pixel phone if Google had been smarter about expanding support to more countries. As for other Android devices, no thanks.
Hopefully, the chips are more power efficient with less heat and better battery life. The TPU is supposed to be 50% better (according to Google) which is the main improvement. Question is will 4th generation Samsung be better than 1st generation TSMC 😂 ?
I just don’t know why they don’t ditch samsung and go to snapdragon. This time with google pixel 9 has an outstanding design but same extremely underpowered chipset. This chip is just 3 years behind the competition. I will definitely pass pixel 9 pro just because of shi*ty chipset.
They signed a contract with Samsung Fabs and probably got very cheap wafers. I understand the contract expires after the G4, and Google, like others, will dump Samsung and move to TSMC for the G5, which will be based on their new design. They have learnt a lot in the last three years, hoping the G5 will compete with the best.
@@andyH_England really hope so . I currently use 15 pro max and the chipset is outta this world. I too own S24 ultra but A17 pro is way ahead in graphic intensive tasks .
Sad to say that the processing power of the Tensors has always been "Good Enough" but that modem has consistently been "HORRIBLE". Even Samsung doesn't use its in house modem on it's US phones. Take the hint Google, use a Qualcomm modem and you'll be set. I've been wanting to upgrade my P6P for the last 2 years but I need a Pixel that can make phone calls first.
I have pixel6 pro and pixel8 pro, both work good for phone calls. My experience was, if there are problems with the phone calls also the carrier was involved (like weak signal). Maybe a Samsung or so would still have signal, but the signal was weak in the first place.^^
@@tomswan3401 yes the signal is weak to begin with. But my wife has a Galaxy S22 ultra and consistently if we're in NY, TN, KY, FL or anywhere we're traveling I'll have 1 bar of 4g to no signal in many places. At those places she would have 1-2 bars of 5G. Too many times I'd have to borrow her phone to make calls or check Google Maps because my Pixel just couldn't. We both have Verizon with the plan that gives access to the 5G UW bands. Which is awesome when I have it, but way, WAY, too many times I'd lose it all.
I am growing tired of the first generation in my Pixel 6 Pro because it run TOO hot, TOO regularly, and WAY TOO easily! After the years I'm ready to upgrade. Thanks, and God bless.
Nice, thx for the report! I hope this minimal/almost no step up from G3 means that Google is working on the next gen chip which will be targeted also for the PC platforms with ChromeOS which needs to be revived and brought more to light to directly compete with Windows and MacOS. Google is always asleep missing Arm PC band wagon popularized by Apple and now followed by M$ with Qualcomm+Nuvia ex Apple tech. Google must step up its game and jump on it ASAP, otherwise it will be way too late. ChromeOS with Android store need to be optimized for every x86 as possible Linux+Andorid apps alternative and even more and deeper optimized to Google's next Arm based PC chip. ChomesOS should be dual bootable, it must have exceptional touch screen, has to be closely connected to the Android ecosystem with deep integration to Android apps which can either run natively or through best possible emulation only Google can deliver. Basically Google next gen Arm based chip PC must deliver everything what Windows cannot while being both PC and Android ecosystem machine which is in sync with users native Android devices. Google used to be so agile and revolutionary before it turned into this heavy and slow corporate turd which keeps on stinking in the consumer market. They intentionally locked themselves way too much in the datacenter world and to data collection for generating revenue from ads.
Why can't they just make a phone right? 🤳 I've been planning to buy one for 13 years but always end up with Xiaomi, Realme, etc., because they simply work well overall.
But will it offset the Pixel 9 Fold smaller battery???? What is Google thinking when they shrink the MAH and have the cahones to call it their flagship device? Does Google think we are not playing attention? Google is getting as greedy as Samsung. Someone must need ANOTHER mega-yacht.
I can guarantee you that most people complaining here in the comments are mostly people complaining based on benchmark numbers. And they’ve never actually owned a Pixel phone before. Pixels have never been about raw power, Google tends to make their phones more about AI and being smarter than the competition. Having owned 3 different Pixels(5a, 6, and 6a), I can tell you the biggest issues for Google are the numerous bugs/glitches, bad battery life, overheating, and awful modem connectivity. Allegedly, the modem is better this year and if that’ll fix connectivity issues and Google can ensure no bugs, they’ve made huge improvements in key areas this year. They added screens that will be used in the iPhone 16 lineup, they’re going to use the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from the S24 series, they literally stole the iPhone design and made it their own, and they upgraded charging speeds to 45W wired. They’re matching the specs of the competition except for power and if you’ve ever used a Pixel, you know they don’t need raw power. Pixels work well in overall performance, they just need to improve stability across the board. If that’s still not enough for the spec nerds, they need to either buy another brand of phone or give this new Pixel 9 series a chance.

I hope this problem will be fixed with the upcoming android 15 release. I really like the Pixel lineup but it's really hard for me to recommend it to someone if there are substantial problems like these. Hardware and software come from Google so why is it that the performance feels like a cheap entry level Smartphone. Even mid range Samsung phones feel smoother than my P8P. Many Apps across the system have scrolling lags, even Google Apps. Fitbit App, RUclips, Spotify, the Google Feed, Google News, WhatsApp, Kleinanzeigen, Google Fotos (Especially in the newer memories tab), and many more experience this issue.
There are two open Threads in the Android Issue Tracker where many users report similar issues yet Google doesn't seem to care.

@@RogueHetero I'm experiencing significant performance issues with my Pixel 8 Pro, particularly when scrolling through apps. The device exhibits jarring stutters and laggy animations, making the overall user experience unpleasant. I'm hopeful that the upcoming Android 15 update will address these problems.
Despite being a long-time Pixel fan, it's increasingly difficult to recommend this device due to these persistent performance shortcomings. Given that both hardware and software are developed by Google, it's baffling that the Pixel 8 Pro feels like a budget-tier phone. Even mid-range Samsung devices offer smoother performance.
A wide range of apps, including core Google services like RUclips, Spotify, and the Google Feed, suffer from scrolling lags. This issue is also prevalent in third-party apps such as WhatsApp, Kleinanzeigen, and Google Photos, especially the new Memories feature.
To make matters worse, there are multiple open threads on the Android Issue Tracker with numerous users reporting similar problems, yet Google seems indifferent to the issue.
I'm surprised Google is adding a ray tracing variant of the Mali this year. Everyone else has support for it now.
So why are you surprised ? Isn't this the norm, the expected thing, for Google to join the ranks in terms of a major functionality ?
Are they ? Cause the GPU is exactly the same as G3.
They are less efficient because they are manufactured by Samsung
Ok my comment with a source to that claim got deleted but the tensor g3 as efficient as the snapdragon 888
it's because google sucks at chip design. they're slower, less efficient, hotter and have worse modems lmao.
@@m.m.1634but Samsung phones way better?
If they charged a mid range price for a mid range SoC, then it would not have mattered much. But they are charging a flagship price for a mid range SoC.
Midrange? It has the similar specs as flagship devices launched in Q1 of this year?
@@GaryExplains the G3 from last year is slower than a sd 8+ gen 1 or an A15, chips that are 3+ years old
Which flagship
It's frustrating that Google names its devices after Brazilian locations like "Abrolhos" and "Janeiro" but doesn't make those devices available in Brazil.
Yeah, phones are fast enough.
No killer app that truly needs on-phone ML inference capability.
Not now but you will use it for 3,4 years atleast
please continue making videos discussing upcoming chipsets, not enough content being made about the chips powering these devices
Specs need to start including something like calculations per second per watts (efficiency in other words).
I'll wait for the P10. This is a Tensor G3+ basically. I thought Google will use the Exynos 2400 found on the S24 and S24+, this processors runs great on these galaxies.
For LLM's, even if nano, RAM does matter a lot. The other thing is fix the fingerprint sensor. Might consider upgrading to Pixel 9.
They did that. It's ultra Sonic gen 2 from Qualcomm
what is stopping them for using Qualcomm chips? Hopefully it's modem is Qualcomm atleast?
Google wants to include its own TPU in the processor so therefore it must design its own chip. It doesn't want to use Qualcomm's chips.
@@GaryExplains oh I see, thank you!
So wait for G5.
Watching on my Pixel 9 Pro XL
I don't play games on a phone so this phone is perfect for me, i just need a nice camera and clean Android user interface.
Watching on a pixel 6. Probably won't update until the pixel 10/a for feature updates only
Thanks, was hoping to get a fold, since format but leaks suggest lower camera's, so ill also wait for oneplus 2, with SD3/4.
Is the G5 the one that will be built by TSMC?
I love my pixel 8 pro. While it may have inferior benchmarks, its real world user experience is superior to any phone on the market
Secret uses and superpowers of pixel pros we don't know about? And ngl the pixel8 was a downgrade from my 7 pro like wtf is Google doing bro
I said very clearly that there is a new modem, the Exynos 5400.
@@GaryExplains yes you did, I am just hoping it works well as progression in exynos chips is not doing anything good.
And it seems I'll be eligible buying the Pixel 9 Fold in my country, even if my wife will kill me 😁
Good luck bro 😂
No problem with not being as powerful as its competitors but it should at least be be more energy efficient. And we all know how crazy pixels heat. That’s the only reason stopping me from switching to Google pixel.
It's fine. I still haven't seen any ai feature that I would be compelled to use regularly. They are all just throwing everything on the wall to see what will stick.
if Google invested all those resources into optimising the software for the Snapdragon chips it would've been much much better for the consumer
Google wants to start making its own chipset and collaborating with Samsung on Tensor was a step in that direction.
Google to Samsung: we want the cheapest $hit you got....
Google's constant excuse that they are not after top performance just doesn't cut it. All phones besides 'gaming' ones, are not after performance as their main goal, however they use what the current tech has to offer. Google just doesn't.
any possibility these chips will be available on laptops such as chrome books?
In what sense😂😂😂?
Zero chance!
are you masochist or what?
They should have gone with tsmc or made processor with Collab with Qualcomm
Sleeping on Pixels till they switch to TSMC
I my opinion besides Pixel products are available only in 17 countries the other reason why they sell very low quantity is this not so good chip. They really should make a custom deal with Qualcomm and have them make a custom chip for Pixel products. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Qualcomm chips are by far the best out there!
g5 with tsmc 3nm is the way to go
I have a pixel 6a and i was really looking forward for the upgrade this year , i am not a gamer so i dont think i care as much because at this point its not just the performance but the other things as well, people dont buy pixel for performance, they but it for software mostly and camera as long as that is good and there is significant upgrades there , i dont see this as a major reason to not upgrade
Are they ordering Dollar Tree versions from TSMC ?
They should use the Tensor chip to emulate film camera looks like the Fujifilm cameras do. Phone cameras still have a very "artificial" look.
I am growing tired of the first generation in my Pixel 6 Pro because it run TOO hot, TOO regularly, and WAY TOO easily! After the years I'm ready to upgrade. Thanks, and God bless.
Eagerly waiting for SD Gen 4. Suck it google.
Google pixel is like ea fifa in smartphones
Google needs to justify this expense. They haven’t so far.
I bought the Pixel 7 after my 13 Pro Max. My iPhone has barely slowed down. My pixel feels like it’s five years old.

Toaster with the best camera on earth.
They should go mediatek route. 4 powerful core
Stock ARM designs are very poor, don't expect much.
Very poor compared to what?
My pixel 8 pro lasts 2 days in battery. G3 underrated
Upgrading to the nine is exactly the same phone.
the fact that even samsung ditch their own exynos for snapdragon is very interesting this tensor g4 made by Samsung is probably crap

Not regretting buying the 8 few months ago instead of waiting for the 9
I can guarantee you that most people complaining here in the comments are mostly people complaining based on benchmark numbers.
Going from 9 cores to 8 cores, Google downgrading 🤣🤣
They would have been better off just using the 8 Gen 3s for 1 generation
The processor doesn't really matter for me. But if the price is right, only will I buy a pixel 9.
My Tensor 1 P6P was god awful. That chip would overheat on a whim.

That’s a shame, I was expecting a really upgraded processor for the Pixel 9, so I’ll skip this generation and stay with my Samsung 😢
everyone should just wait for google to move the manufacturing from Samsung to tsmc ,this will happen next year, until then all Tensor= exyons hot mess :)
Samsung using qualcomm chips. Google usung samsung chip
This tells the whole story
Its funny how google tslking about pixel 10 befkre they even lsunched the pixel9. They need to stop dragging their loyal soldiers along. Like their reply to being asked why they so fsr behind is "well the tensor g5 next year is ahead of this years samsun..." Like they jus snubbin their own ppl saying that onky rhe employees get the real flagship like i dont get this shit it makes no sense i saw that google employees said their preferred phone is samsung snd the description on pixels website is so like the way im talking right now. The engineers saying "it does more whatever" im perplexd. I miss the Nexus days especially the 4-5 like omg thise eere the dayd even the designs were just so much better. Google Pixel is just an ordinary phone with enhance picture camera. Nothing really special about it except for its special high price tag. I would not be surprised be the company goes down the sink soon.
You think Google is going to go bankrupt?
Bankruptcy 😂😂 the 4 or 5 largest company in the world going bankrupt, yeah right. Now a days people will say anything but I highly doubt Google is experiencing any financial strain at this point in the game. People are always praying on Google's demise 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Google is a company that's too big to fail, worst case scenario only phone production line/department will be discontinued like LG
Special things of Pixel phones:
- Unique hardware design with personality
- Clean AndroidOS that is cohesive and consistent, particularly if you use Google software
- No bloatware, no ads
- First to upgrade to new Android versions and with 7 years of OS and security updates
- Photos
- Haptic engine
- Smart features for spam calls and many other unique features
Still no real improvement and still stuck with the Samsung foundry. Looks like it'll be a while longer before I'm tempted to try a Pixel again
Google is the next Apple in making
Dude if it will get overheated while driving and disable network its meh
Maybe this explains why we didn't see MKBHD not showing benchmark, just kept going on about minor AI image improvements - all 3 phones in the 9 series are overpriced especially when you compare them to current flagships like a OnePlus 12, Xiami Pro 14 - keep in mind thst by the end of the year you will see phones using Next Gen Mediatek 9400 & Snapdragon 8/4 😂
How long until gg understand that people just want a non lag non hiccup non overheat and upick up the phone it open instantly 😂
Without USB4 Type C - with DisplayPort - new Pixel is scrap.

It's just getting to hot with just using browser. Modem on it is bad, it just takes to much energy. 2-4% just beeing on mobile, on wifi it's about 2%. Hotspot is killing the battery, one hour can suck 15%+.
Is it still the same on Pixel 8s? I do not have much hope for Samsung modems, at least the one in the Pixel 6.
My phone at work, ironially Samsung, only lose 1% battery per hour on Wifi an 1.5 on mobile network and 5-6% when it's used as a hotspot.
I want to switch to a new one but honestly I don't want to spend a thousand bucks for 128GB stoage and a medicore performance /Batterylife from Google.
The monthly updates a nice though, a lot of companies have some asterics* when they claim to do that, Samsung is one of those (Only long term monthly on S)
