I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Matt Stefan...One of my favorite channels to watch. As always, Great info!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the follow up, Matt! You are my fishing channel.
Thanks
I see you made the top 10 yesterday, congratulations man and good luck in the knock out round.
Still have one more day to make the knockout round.
@@MattStefanFishing oh my bad I thought after first round you went to the knock out. Well good luck tomorrow. Looks like it’s some tough fishing watching it on mlf live. I seen a few guys yesterday catching them in a frog was you able to get anything on a topwater? Like I said good luck man and who knows maybe this is gonna be your first win!!!!
That crank has eyes on it like the old Bagley Balsa.
Great content as always. I will keep sharing your channel for sure.
Yes it does!
Fantastic video, that is all the lake is full of around here... standing timber, lay downs, brush piles, bluff walls, huge boulders. I am certainly going to have each of these tied on next time out.
Good luck!
Great tips, particularly the tie eye location on jigs to get them to rollover limbs. Great tournament so far, keep the momentum rolling, good luck you can do it!
Thanks!
Good call out on the line tie on the jig VERY VERY IMPORTANT!! Ive been playing with jigs for a while and what he said was very important.
Yes it is!
Great tips Matt. I fish a lot of wood and lay downs. Thanks again from Western Kentucky.
Thanks for watching!
Matt, would love to hear you elaborate on this one by adding some tips about fishing wood in current
Ill put it on the video list.
I fish a really woody area with a ton of laydowns, etc. The first point is the reason I use braid with a mono leader…usually big game. It doesn’t get hung up quite as badly and it works beautifully as “sacrificial” line. As it gets beat up, you just shorten and eventually replace the leader…back in business.
good idea!
Congratulations on a good start in the tournament yesterday. Keep it! Rooting for you
Thanks!
Good bait options, wood is fun to fish. Thanks for the vid.
Yes it is
I appreciate the advice Matt pulling for you in your next round of fishing, tight lines good luck. 🙏
Thanks!
I wish you great luck in the tournament! Go get em, Matt
Thanks!
Congratulations on 10k subscribers Matt.
Thanks!
Congratulations on 10K. You have a great channel Matt. Your tips help out no doubt.
Thank you!
I picked up the Mepps Timberdoodle and it's worth checking out put the trailer of your choice on it
I’ll check it out
Great info Matt! It was interesting to see day 1 versus day 2 weights, especially with issues with fog, falling water and locks to shorten your fishing day.
No kidding! Group B guys smashed them
Hardly any wood or laydowns in my lake, and I fish them almost every time and never get a bite, but my lake is really weedy so maybe that has something to do with it. I still appreciate the tips as it confirmed I was going about it the right way.
Thanks for watching!
On the braid thing, using high carrier count braid makes a huge difference. The smoother the better for wood. The multiple wire weed guards are also amazing in wood. Hildebrandt did them years ago on their snagless sally. Picasso has some really good stuff with them that Aaron Martens has had made on their newer stuff. Dual weed fiber weed guards work pretty well too but it has some draw backs and isn't near as good as wire. There is a trick with putting an o-ring around the shank, through the fiber weed guard and over the eye of a jig to make them more weedless in wood.
Great points!
Great info as always Matt, congrats on hitting 10k!!!!!!
Thanks for your support!
Congratulations on 10k subs man . Well deserved
Thanks!
Thanks Matt
Thanks for watching!
Great tips Matt!
Thanks!
Another great video thank you!!
I don't have a boat but I do fish from the shore with my kids
Could you make a video
Explaining what types of lures could you use from Shore
I use a pickerel rig because everything else I tend to lose.
And it gets expensive
If you have ideas like swim baits or anything that I could cast and then reel in
Ideas would be great
My kids are 9 and 10 and they're pretty good at casting themselves
We're pretty much fishing for anything it's catch and release.
Great suggestion Ill put it on the list.
Congrats on 10k subs Matt. Well earned. I’m fishing an undeveloped lake now that is loaded with lay downs. New scenario for me. It’s also loaded with sunfish & blue herring. I’ve had success with buzzbaits & jigs so far. This video is on point. Thanks bro! 👊🏼🎣😎
Awesome!
Great stuff. Ill have to work in the slow retrieve squarebills and spinnerbaits around wood more often. But I do love the trashmaster jig around wood! Congrats on 10k
Thanks for watching!
Congrats on a great day 1, keep up the momentum tomorrow!!
I plan on it!
I like to put a chatterbait blade on a pitching jig, it kinda works like the spinnerbait bite
Good idea!
Matt I agree with you on your 5 choice's! But have found that a better Jig is the Nu Tech jig comes through virtually everything! Just My humble opinion!
Haven’t tried one
Thank you great information 👍
Anytime
Do you peg the weight on the Texas rigged creature? Also, continued success at the TITLE!
I do when flipping wood but not when casting
Great choices for fishing wood. The frog surprised me but it does work well around wood although I dont usually think to throw it in those places. Great tips and go crush them tomorrow!
Give the frog a try!
Go get them tomorrow Matt ! Routing for ya!
Thanks!
As always great tips Matt thats why i watch everyday from Ohio
Awesome!
You’ll shot your eye out kid !!
Any tips for turtle flambeaux ? Going in the middle of September.
Thanks
Topwaters around main lake weeds
A month ago, the biggest strike of my life made a beeline for a hidden tree and tangled there. I was heartbroken, not just for myself, but for the fish, too. Is it ethical to fish where that risk is high?
The square bill sounds great. Thanks for including instructions. I’ll have to do all retrieves slow because the trees are not visible.
I switched from Texas rig to a drop shot using a lightly crimped split shot. A split shot is cheap and quick to replace.
i think its ethical as long as the equipment you are using is applicable for the structure. For example im not going to be pitching into bushes with 6lb test line.
@@MattStefanFishing Thanks, Matt.
Excellent job again, Matt. The line tie information on the jig was very helpful as was as was what you said about the pointy nose frog in wood. I will put both to use. Is it possible you meant PH custom Squarebill instead of RP Squarebill? I can find the first but not the second. What is your next choice Balsa Squarebill after that? Good news - I had a good day with 20 lb Fluorocarbon. I had made a few adjustments to the baitcaster and had no problems all day. Whoopi!
It’s a RP made by Rod Provost from Wisconsin. Look him up on Facebook.
My line up exactly
Thanks!
Way to grind it out yesterday
It wasn’t easy that’s for sure
Hope to see u on btl soon. Heard they were hoping to get u on. I think it would be an awesome show to have u. Btl is the best with mark an Matt
I would love to be on BTL
Would you recommend some to buy a Skeeter bass boat and why over other brands.
Yep! Great handling boats built well.
Wood is all I have basically on my reservoir. Would love to see some on the water heavy timber flipping/pitching with kind of stream of consciousness commentary. I'm trying to get better at picking high percentage areas on kind of endless miles of bank laydowns. 🎣🎣🎣
Great suggestion!
@@MattStefanFishing 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Great video, too
Thanks!
Do you change weight sizes on your Texas rig based on the type of wood cover or do you stick with the same weight?
More so based on depth than type of wood cover.
Last time I said this it worked out good so here goes. Good luck tomorrow Boss Im looking for a 15 pound bag. God that would be party time if you and Miles got the free pass. If that happens Im buying you guys cocktails chop chop. I live on Onalaska so Im not kidding you Im there with bells on.
That would be awesome!
Hey love the videos. Could you do one on green stained water ?
Yep I’ll put it on the list
Great video. Excellent point about the type of line. Fishing around cypress trees here in FL, I always have to be wary of the cypress knees, which is usually where the fish are! The frogs do work well over those knees, too.
Yes they do!
Matt great episode as always. Had to laugh when you showed the frog. Recently I was dragging a frog in open water and a turtle kept try to intercept it with each cast. It was about five minutes of entertainment for me. Had the GoPro rolling. 😁
Haha!
Are you still cutting the front hook off your crank baits?
Yes i do a lot when fishing around snags. This was a new crank i haven’t used yet
i love to worm a crankbait
Me too
Wouldn't that be woodless?
Underrated comment
Good point
