The US attempting to integrate its “colonial” possessions or release them immediately makes more sense than just kinda staring at them. This alternate “manifest destiny” of everywhere the star spangled banner touches must be brought liberty seems more in line with our idealism instead of just “world police.” If American started integration campaigns as soon as we got the Philippines, you’re looking at 50 years of relation building ended by a world war proving we’d fight for them just the same as any mainlander. Now that I've thought about it, the Philippines having significant Muslim areas would have made America hesitant about getting involved in the Middle East. For example invading Afghanistan and Iraq would have resulted in secession movements.
The US had a method for pacifying the South, that interaction would define US policy on the middle east, would make the US footprint there more efficient and less as the US wouldnt be long therem
Then start forced labor again in the American S-East, just like in the early 19th century, specifically in the cotton farms, this time send the belligerent Filipinos, including the muslims. That would tame them, greatly..

As an American married to a Filipina, I just want to say that the Filipino people are the friendliest and warm hearted people I have ever met. Domestic politics in the US today and nationalism in the Philippines would of course prevent them from becoming additional US states. Having said that, I can see major benefits for both Filipinos and the existing US population. A significant portion of Filipinos already speak at least some level of English. American capital market access would allow their cheaper labor force to rapidly develop. It also would effectively permanently create a security blanket throughout Asia.
Americans are the first ones to teach us how to scam anyways, first they promised us independence against the spanish but in reality we just became an unofficial US vassal state. Too sad we didn't become a Japanese stronghold.

A possible Part 2 to this video might be how much the Philippines becoming a US state would have influenced the US today. One of the reasons the Pearl Harbor attack was so effective was that the American Pacific Fleet was in one place, rather than spread out. If it was needed to guard the Philippines as well, the difficulty of attacking the fleet as a whole skyrockets. As such, I would think Japan would go a rather different plan. Either following the northern plan and forcing the Soviets into a two-front war, or attacking the colonial holdings but bypassing American territory. Without America joining the war until some other casus belli crops up, Japan would have an easier time of striking at French Indochina and British Malaya. Australia would face more of a threat, but an actual invasion would be unlikely. By the time they reached New Guinea, the Japanese forces were stretched quite thin. Still, they would secure supplies of oil and rubber from the newly conquered territory.
I think it makes sense for the Philippino statehood movement to start in the 30s. When the anti colonial Roosevelt admin creates the new commonwealth deal they could go in the direction of integration than independence.

That point about the costs of maintaining the Philippines was indeed felt by the US during its colonial period. Not even 20 years after the Philippine-American War, many Americans who were once supportive of taking the Philippines by force came to realize just how costly maintaining the archipelago actually was. Under that economic strain plus the pressure of continuing Philippine independence movements (both civil and armed), US Congress signed a law guaranteeing eventual Philippine independence in 1916, again not even 20 years after they purchased the archipelago from Spain. Whereas if they had recognized and protected Philippine Independence in 1898 (instead of crushing it) it's more likely they might have had a reliable ally, military ports and bases for them to project their power in Asia, and favorable trade/business deals in the Philippines, without the need to actually spend US government funds to maintain the Philippines. Without the Philippine-American War happening and instead US-favored business investments in the Philippine Republic (industry, trade, defense contracts, etc.), the Philippines would be able to develop much more rapidly in the early 20th century and thus be a much less vulnerable target for Imperial Japanese aggression in the 1940s. Also, re. Operation Downfall, I've heard stories from Filipino veterans claiming that some Filipino guerrilla units were being reorganized and retrained as regular Army units to supposedly participate in the invasion of mainland Japan, though I haven't yet found any documents that confirm this, so it could've been mere hearsay/speculation among the guerrillas. There were tens of thousands of Filipino guerrillas, though, and I can see the US military probably finding a way to integrate Filipino volunteer units to bolster the Allied invasion forces.

The Insular Cases is what triggered the creation of the condition of “Unincorporated Territory “. Before 1898, all territories acquired by the U.S. were immediately incorporated into the Union and given a path to Statehood. When the U.S. got the Spanish Colonies, Congress did not want to annex any, so the term Unincorporated Territory was eventually created to deny any possibility of Statehood to all the new possessions. The Insular Cases have never been challenged and it is still the Law of the Land.

I think the most realistic path to statehood back then was to only admit a part of the Philippines as a US state, in particular the original Tagalog provinces who revolted against Spain. Only those born in this region would become US citizens. The rest would be divided into commonwealths where their people would only be US nationals but not citizens (like in Samoa). The lack of federal income tax would make the people of these commonwealths to want the status quo and not go for statehood. Only the Tagalogland would have been a state for several decades and that would have been somewhat acceptable to the the elites at DC. Just two Filipino senators and probably only 10 Filipino representatives. As to why the US would want Tagalogland to become a state, well, one reason could be is to finally put an end to the Tagalogs' aspiration of independence. Many of the Tagalog rebels would permanently abandon their armed struggle if they see that they are represented fairly in the US government.
The funny thing is that Visayans were far more loyal to the Americans, witht he former siding the the US against the Tagalogs and the latter just accepting US annexation after a brief protectorate status. In this scenario it would be Visayas and also Mindanao(which was settled by Visayans in the 1930s) who would be the US State not Luzon
In the alternate timeline. The poor people's houses that are made of thin wood and scraps would probably be concrete, more dams would've been created, land infrastructures are improved. Thus preventing major typhoon catastrophes from strong winds and floods to cause a serious devastation. It's population is simply too large and too far away to fully integrate with the rest of America. I say this as a Filipino-American. As a commonwealth, the Philippines still had its own President, currency, military, and legislature; all while enjoying the protection of the U.S., free trade, free movement, and most importantly, the U.S. Constitution. The best of both worlds. Meanwhile, the U.S. gets a vast territorial outpost in the western Pacific and a huge population/economic base to develop without having to rely on countries like China. It'd be a win-win. In fact a return of the Philippines being an American commonwealth protectorate would solve A LOT of issues surrounding China. It would also solve a lot of the deep corruption faced in the Philippines itself.
Yeah its is probably the best scenario. or the US would be like the modern version of western and Eastern Roman Empire an alternative scenario where the Philippines remains a part of America but as a distinct entity, similar to how the Eastern Roman Empire functioned in relation to the Western Roman Empire.
As a concerned citizen of the Philippines, I would like to present a proposal for exploring the potential advantages of a potential annexation by the United States. Considering the ongoing challenges of bureaucratic inefficiencies, corruption and persistent poverty in our country, it is crucial to evaluate all feasible options that could enhance the well-being of our citizens.
Would have been nice, but the ship has sailed already. Philippines is now an independent, sovereign country. We would have to be colonized, invaded again by the US for this to be even a possibility. US is now our ally, unless we turn into a communist state, there is no reason for the US to colonize us again.
Accepting the posits of this scenario, I can absolutely see the rest of the US territories getting fast-tracked to Statehood very quickly, with the Filipino Precedent being used as the reasoning. I could easily imagine Okinawa being thus incorporated, as well as the rest of the Pacific Associated Territories. Picture the 21st Century dawning on a world where the Pacific is an "American Lake", dotted with and surrounded by many of the 100 United States. America, with it's population of 500,000+ and VAST network of Continental and Overseas States, would not be the largest country BY LAND, but would DWARF every other country on earth by total controlled territory (when you include territorial waters).
9:25 Regarding the What if scenario this part of the Video with Sulu Sultanate would become its own seperate state and requests american aid to reclaim the leashed territory of Sabah from the British Malaysia. This in term would be later discovered having large oil reserves beneficial for the US.
I Dont Think that would be possible, since Philippines is too big(unlike puerto rico) and far away and consequences of absorbing it is way too much. not to mention it has its own strong identity.
I feel like decolonization would be more akward for America in this scenario, with them having less of a moral high-ground to force the europeans to leave holdings they considered part of their own core nation (like france with algeria and portugal with angola and mozambique)
See the draft speech the "Day which we'll live in infamy" Manila is deliberately deleted as the US knew that the Philippines is very hard to defend for them at that time. At the juncture they dropped their aspiration of having PI as a future state.
What if augustus has a better sucessor than claudius? Bonus points if the teutoburg forest event is avoided or somehow reversed and rome conquered all the territories augustus wanted(parts of arabia, germania and the nubian kingdom)
As a Filipino living in California, this scenario is interesting. If my homeland really becomes a states, would be sense to split into smaller states. I don't know if in this alternative scenario, the economy and living standards in the Philippines will improve, makes little effect, or makes it worse. But I will say, this is a nice video. I’m all for the Philippines becoming part of the US. But if that happened and they became a state, they would have around 170 electoral college votes. Because they have a population of nearly 120,000,000.
Ww1 would still happen considering the amount of pressure at that time. All nations at that time is basically waiting for something to happen to start the war
If this was the case, the American government would've approved the mass migration of Filipinos to the newly occupied Japan and in turn, approve the mass migration of Mainland Americans into the Philippines. This would even be highly likely if the atomic bombs were never used and instead, invaded Japan resulting in the massive loss of Japanese populations. We could also see the possibility of Japan being split in two as Soviet Russia would also scramble to invade from the north.
I rather like the Philippines. I visited there while being stationed in South Korea. They’re a good earthy people. But it would be a mistake to even think of incorporating them it into the USA. The same applies to Puerto Rico.

All in all, this scenario has a lot of interesting potential but is either not explored or is a major stretch.

In 1946 Filipinos didn't have a chance to vote for Statehood. The Politicians voted for Independence without having the people vote for it. My grandfather lived that era in Mindanao wanted Statehood..

Imagine how the culture and image of the PH would vastly shift if it got integrated as a state.

It's gonna America's Hong Kong/Macao
It would have been more interesting if the Philippines stayed under Spain for a few decades and had become one of the Spanish provinces with Filipino representation in the Spanish Cortes.
I can only see benefits for Spain retaining their Asian port. I guess the biggest issue was losing Mexico.
But that would mean that the Spanish would be a minority within their own nation

I'd love to see something like that, but also involving the what if that the Spaniards listened to Rizal.
High chance if this would have happen, Spain's monarchy would most likely decided to move their location to the Philippines. (While Fransisco is in power in European Spain, in WW2)
Here a video idea: Five tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole) in what is now Oklahoma. They came forward to the U.S government and wanted Statehood. The topic is what if the various tribal nations propose statehood and the U.S. decided to accept all of the tribes as states instead of the current timeline. What kind of economical and political effects would this timeline have now that the various tribes are US states.
Love seeing these videos, keep up the great work man. This is top tier content!
If my may make a recommendation/request: What If Canada become independent after winning the War of 1812?
There were tens of thousands of Filipino guerrillas, though, and I can see the US military probably finding a way to integrate Filipino volunteer units to bolster the Allied invasion forces.
very interesting scenario that I have never seen discussed before
Im surprised New Mexico or California didn’t get more attention as examples of firmly majority Spanish speaking regions before the annexation and their eventual state hood.
As a Filipino-American, I find this what-if scenario quite fascinating!
Would've been real viable if the US were looking for freedom as early as the 1930's, they would've asserted the Philippine claim on Sabah for all that oil and gas, lol.
Hell yeah they would have definitely did that and considering after ww2 America could easily do that.

What if the Soviet Union survived in one of the 15 Soviet Republics ?
OK, what about this. What if the insular cases were differently decided and so people born in the Philippines became US citizens starting in the 1800s when the US took over the territory? That would be an entirely different trajectory toward statehood for the Philippines.
thats true but the area would need a lot of development you cant even imagine
The Insular Cases is what triggered the creation of the condition of “Unincorporated Territory “.
Before 1898, all territories acquired by the U.S. were immediately incorporated into the Union and given a path to Statehood.
When the U.S. got the Spanish Colonies, Congress did not want to annex any, so the term Unincorporated Territory was eventually created to deny any possibility of Statehood to all the new possessions.
The Insular Cases have never been challenged and it is still the Law of the Land.
I had a whiplash from the title alone and I'm Pinoy 😅 It's interesting to see what alternate history would be if the Philippines were under different colonizers. Especially the Dutch and the Germans cause both groups at one point in history attempted to take the islands themselves.

I doubt that Japan would even attack the pearl harbor in this time line though, their goal was mainly to get resources from the east indies, yet this time line the Philippines is too well defended that it could have been impossible for Japan to attack and take it, nor is it possible to ignore and by pass it, also, the Japanese strategy for war against the US was to push the Americans out of western Pacific then slowly retreat as the Americans push back and destroying American forces bit by bit on the way, yet this time line's Philippines is not able to be taken, thus probably the whole plan is scraped, it would have make it too hard for Japanese to even came up with a plan in this situation where America has a strong foot hold so near and the Japanese denied of east indies resources, it is too impossible even without hindsight, and also, the US and Japan was near a deal to recognize Manchuria in exchange for Japanese retreat from China and French Indochina, but didn't come through because of some infighting in Japanese diplomatic department and some "brilliant" guy came up with the idea to fight the US, but in this time line, I doubt it would had been as much appealing to attack pearl harbor, thus it is possible that the Japanese just excepted the agreement and the Pacific war wouldn't even happen
Even if Filipinos wants to become a US state, it will never pass on the Floor and Senate. Take for example Hawaii the last colony to be admitted to the Union. The majority of white anglo Americans believe that the minority (majority) population of Hawaii does not align with their Christian beliefs. The actual answer? The Phillipines would have never been allowed to become a state unless it became majority anglo white. That's precisely why Puerto Rico still hasn't made it in.
Amazing, literally everything you just said is wrong. If that was true, why is a majority Asian/Pacific Islander Hawaii a state?
that is not precisely why puerto rico did become a state. i feel like its more of a "how do we put another star into the flag" because like, a star on the flag for every state is a centuries long tradition and it would be pretty dumb to just break that tradition just so that an extra 3 million can gain extra rights like voting in the presidential elections.
@@appa609 because hawaiis population is insignificant. Filipinos would’ve made up a large portion of the population, thus taking away power from European Americans.

that's not true. Hawaii was 60% Asian or partially Asian upon becoming an American state. The reason why the Philippines was never offered statehood was because its large population would have upset the balance of power between the two political parties in Washington DC.

Because let's face it, we have typhoons, US has Hurricanes and tornadoes, far far stronger than what the Philippines have. Don't forget that Hawaii is surrounded by volcanoes, and yet they're doing well. So the financial burden will probably be less of an issue as soon as the improvements were made. Also, don't forget that Philippines has a lot of gold mines.
Americans themselves build their houses with wood and paper, so I doubt the first one

Nice
It would have been nice if the Philippines had been a state, our infrastructure would have been great! No brownouts, nice roads and well controlled traffic. What a wasted opportunity!!! It would have been a paradise as a tourist destination!
It would've been best to keep the Philippines as a Commonwealth protectorate with its high autonomy, instead of a state.
US is now our ally, unless we turn into a communist state, there is no reason for the US to colonize us again.
go ahead
Hopefully the Philippines would have been multible states. But absorbing the Philippines would change the election outcome way too much.
You underestimate Filipinos and our colonial mentality to get white. It would take only a several generations to whiten.
Philippines would be one of the most safest state and no country can touch it
Accepting the posits of this scenario, I can absolutely see the rest of the US territories getting fast-tracked to Statehood very quickly, with the Filipino Precedent being used as the reasoning.

Everything would be awesome and nothing bad would happen on the islands ever again 😎
I don't know about angola and mozambique, but forcing france to leave algeria was a stupid decision.
The Vietnam War would be a more directly important as the Philippines has a water border.
The Philippines contributed in Vietnam war, Clark and subic were used to facilitate the war.
See the draft speech the "Day which we'll live in infamy" Manila is deliberately deleted as the US knew that the Philippines is very hard to defend for them at that time. At the juncture they dropped their aspiration of having PI as a future state.
