    50th Anniversary Edition - 4CD - BluRay Edition
Nektar’s “Remember the Future”: A 50th Anniversary Celebration
In the realm of progressive rock, few albums have captured the imagination and spirit of the genre as profoundly as Nektar’s “Remember the Future.” Released in November 1973, this conceptual masterpiece not only solidified Nektar’s place in prog rock history but also broke the band to a wider audience, charting in Germany and reaching number 13 on the US Billboard charts, a remarkable feat considering the band had never toured America at that time. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this pivotal album, a special edition box set has been released, offering fans old and new a chance to dive deep into its sonic and visual landscape.
Crafted with care and attention to detail, the “Remember the Future” 50th Anniversary Edition is superb. Esoteric and Cherry Red Records have done a great job, presenting a package that includes 4 CDs and a multi-region Blu-ray disc, all housed in a beautifully designed box that echoes the quality of the Barclay James Harvest and Van Der Graaf Generator sets from the same labels. The box set features a newly remastered original stereo mix of the album, along with two additional CDs featuring a previously unreleased concert recorded in Munster, Germany, in January 1974.
The Blu-ray disc is excellent, offering stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo mixes of the album from the original multi-track tapes. Also included is the original 1973 Quad mix and additional video content, including the rare “Remember the Future” promotional film, footage of “Wings” shown on BBC TV’s Old Grey Whistle Test, and a live performance of “Desolation Valley / Waves” for the same TV show.
The accompanying illustrated booklet, complete with a new essay, provides insight into the album’s creation and its impact on the band’s career. It is a wonderful look into the world of Nektar in the early ’70s, offering fans a chance to understand the context and creativity behind this classic album.
“Remember the Future” is a musical cycle divided into two parts, recorded at Chipping Norton Studios in England. Its success was a turning point for Nektar, introducing their unique blend of progressive rock to a global audience. This 50th Anniversary Edition not only celebrates the album’s legacy but also showcases the band’s live performances and new mixes that breathe fresh life into a timeless classic.
For fans of progressive rock, the “Remember the Future” 50th Anniversary Edition is an essential addition to their collection. It’s a loving tribute to an album offering a comprehensive and immersive experience that honors Nektar’s most well-known and highly regarded work.

I've become a big fan of Nektar this past year. I always really liked Remember The Future but I finally delved into other albums such as Recycled and Down To Earth (which is my favorite so far) I have yet to hear A Tab In The Ocean though... Looks like a superb box set. Hope you have a great holiday, Phil! 🙂

"A Tab In The Ocean" is definitely my favourite. I got into Nektar around 1978 and I had to wait until their reunion concert in London in 2004 to see them live. The gig opened with the waves and keyboard intro of "A Tab In The Ocean" and I actually had tears of joy in my eyes as that legendary concert began. "Tab" still sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it, just wonderful...
And, for the record, I have pretty much the entire Nektar back catalogue and there is not a bad album in there.

They did a short section of RTF on the Old Grey Whistle Test when it came out and I saw them support Zappa at Wembley in 1973. They were great and I became a fan. Saw them a few times after this gig. Brilliant live act and a cracking light show.

When my neighbor died, I got the chance to purchase some of his LPs from the family. This was one of many I bought. A great album, and a band I have to explore more.

It’s a very nice set. I saw Nektar in 1976. I’ve always thought of them as Pink Floyd “light” However, that’s not to denigrate this wee box. Which is well recorded and remastered. The live stuff sounds good for it’s age. But, for me, the performance sounds a little half hearted - even jaded. Perhaps they had been touring for a while and this was an off night? Still, for £40 odd quid it’s a nice package. Good review Phil! ☺️

Not another one! I’m starting to wonder if I actually did live during the 1970’s. I didn’t discover Nick Drake until the 1990s and now this year I’ve discovered Jade Warrior through Now Spinning and now Nektar; again, never heard of them! So I shall look forward to streaming some selected works and if it’s half as good as Jade Warrior then I shall be hunting this one down. Thanks Phil.

Is it worth getting this as i dont have a blue ray player, great band nonetheless, as you say a box set of Tab in the ocean would be great, as would a box set of Journey to the centre of the eye, another fantastic album.

Check the headstock of Roy's guitar, it's an 8 string , which at the time, was completely unique?. I think it just doubles the B and top E however, not sure.

I snapped this up the moment in came out - I can't fault it as a box set, beautifully done by Esoteric.
"Tab" is my absolute favourite, with RTF a close second.
Did you ever hear the Iron Maiden cover of "King of Twilight" as a single B-side which is so respectfully done? I love that too.

End of the 60's beginning the 70's all music from Black Sabbath over King Crrimson to Pink Floyd was called "progressive music", which has absolutely nothing to do with today's "prog". These labels usually get mixed up nowadays. Also labels als "psychedelic" or "acid" rock were unknown at that time.

    • @danneeson7056

Acid rock , psychedelic, underground or head music were terms commonly applied to these groups in those days, at least in North America. The term progressive was also widely used. A Toronto paper used the term 'acid rock' to describe the sound of Black Sabbath as late as 1975. Cheers.
