Great list Phil! I don't know much about Camel? But John Wetton, Thin Lizzy, Jethro Tull, Greg Lake Mott the Hoople! 2nd Mortgage required! Most enjoyable!
Hi those videos were awesome I thought thin Lizzy would have been number one but you court me out lol I think for me they are the best cd sets this last year but vinyl box sets got to be Sabbath got them all again lol and something you said about having enough of worrier to me got to massacre can't get enough of that song thanks again
Thank you for this Phil and all you do over the year. Your dedication and love for the music always shines through. A very Happy 2024 with good health and more good music!
Such a great series of videos - I love that you tackled them ten at a time! Here are my own top 10: 10. Barclay James Harvest - Baby James Harvest 9. Hawkwind - Space Ritual (50th Anniversary Edition) 8. Wishbone Ash - Argus (50th Anniversary Edition) 7. Barclay James Harvest - Once Again 6. John Wetton - An Extraordinary Life 5. Hawkwind - Days of the Underground 1977-1979 4. Magnum - Great Adventure: The Jet Years (RIP Tony Clarkin!) 3. Jethro Tull - Broadsword and the Beast (Monster Edition) 2. Camel - Air Born 1. Horslips - More Than You Can Chew
I love my vinyl box of Broadsword and the Beast. I would have purchased the CD version as well had it not been for the neglect of any live visual DVD or Bluray.
Hi phil i really enjoyed youre top 50 box sets video's and i love youre number 1 the camel box set looks amazing, my favorite box set for 2023 has to be the who who's next box set and it's one of my favorite albums of all time take care 👍✌️
Great series of videos Phil, thanks for that. Roll on to 2024 and more music and conversation. Watching your channel reminds me of why I fell in love with 'Rock' all those years ago.
I thought John Wetton and Greg Lake had some similarities in their voices but Wetton's voice had an element of soulfulness in it especially in Asia's "Only Time Will Tell".
Thank you, thank you, thank you Phil! The sublime Camel Air Born at number 1…! It is without doubt my favourite box set from last year too… the attention to detail, the quality of the remastering, the huge amount of live tracks, the previously unreleased numbers plus a really nice hardback book etc etc… WOW! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your top 50 containing so many varied genres of music (including Kirsty MacColl!) so once again, thank you Phil, good on you ☺️
Totally agree with you on the Who set .. the graphic novel is excellent../ perfect for the story.. It’s one of the best sets I own and have played it constantly since release.. Just as a side note .. I picked up the picture disc of Who Next at a bargain price … and it sounds fantastic…. Something you noted on your Hands of doom set .. your right .. pic discs have come a long way in quality terms… Have a great new year …
I agree phil the camel box is fantastic it's a lot of listening with so much to choose from in one box .I've been tryin to consume it bit by bit. If I was to nit pick the outside of the box/colour is a bit boring but the contents and music certainly are not
Agree 100% on the camel box set.I pre ordered mine from Amazon months ago for £135.00-what a bargain.Released on December 1st and sold out by the 15th it is now selling for double the price and upwards on discogs. I am sure you will enjoy it !
What a fabulous series. Very cool theme to see your greatest re-issue boxsets of the year. After your presentation of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express set, I have to get this. I concur with your opinion that the finest boxset of the year is Camel's "Air born".
Great video Phil. Would really like that Who's Next boxset but just beyond my price range. I came accross a CD by a band called RAIN - 1972 today. Sure you must have heard of them prog/psychedelic band. Quite interesting although the CD i have appears to be unofficial on Mason Records, sounds ok though.
I would have been extremely surprised if Camel hadn't been your number one, it is certainly mine and an absolutely stunning box set. I am still working my way through it. I love the Billy Bragg box set except for *ONE* thing - I rip my albums to my own music server and *NOT ONE RUDDY CD* in that set was recognised by the IMDB server, so I had to type in *EVERY* track name manually! All 14 CDs worth! Plus I am a bit ADHD in track naming so I also include if it's a Radio One Session and what date it is. It took me *BLOODY AGES*... but it's worth it. A few box sets you may have missed out on: Satin Whale - History Box 1 - Just released. Epitaph - History Box 1 - The Brain Years - released in 2023. Epitaph - History Box 2 - The Polydor Years - released later this month. Broselmaschine - It Was 50 Years Ago Today - released in 2019. There's also box sets from Mama's Boys & 10cc later on this month, as well as the expanded 2 CD version of "Lights Out" by UFO and a Colosseum box set in February - so looking like a good year for them. And still saving up my pennies for the Keith Emerson & Greg Lake boxed sets.
Box sets in 2024- we already know from Tony Iommi’s New Year message that there will be a Tony Martin era Black Sabbath boxset scheduled for release in May! Looking forward to that one Phil 😉
Great chart run down. Thanks so much for alerting me to some fantastic music. Do you know if the Camel box is getting a reprint? I can only find one reference to that possibility. In Feb. And it wasn’t on the Camel website either where I read it.
I really enjoyed your 5 part series and learned some stuff I didn't know. I might track down some of the releases in your lists that I don't have: My top 12 Box sets and Reissues of 2023: 1. The Who - Who's Next | Life House SDE (10-CD, 1-Blu-ray) - Just fantastic! Even the sound mix on the San Francisco show doesn't bother me like it does for others. I don't believe in bootlegs. So, this was the first time I've ever heard that show and it is a great performance despite the sound mix of it in the set. All the other stuff in the box is fantastic, including the new remaster of the original album, plus the singles & Sessions, Pete's Demos, The New York Sessions, The London Sessions, The live Young Vic show and of course the Steven Wilson Atmos and 5.1 remixes on the Blu-ray. The two books included are fantastic. If you are a fan of graphic novels, the graphic novel about Lifehouse is intersting. The main book is a treasure, reading all the essays, looking at the all the rare photos and reading each track-by-track rundown of each song on each disc will leave you in awe. 2. Elvis Presley - Elvis On Tour 50th Anniversary (6-CD, 1-Blu-ray) - Note: The box set came out in January of 2023 even though digital version was available for download at the end of 2022. 3. Prince - Diamonds & Pearls SDE (7-CD, 1-Blu-ray) --- Packaged very well with nice hardbound book with essays and track-by-track writeups. Lots of extras including previously unreleased tracks from the vault and a great live concert on some of the CDs along with other live shows on the Blu-ray. 4. Van Halen - The Collection II (5-CD) ---- These Hagar-fronted albums/tracks have never sounded better. These versions are now my goto versions. 5. Dokken - The Elektra Years 1983-1987 (4-CD) -- Even though there are no extras included in this set, these albums were remastered very well. These albums haven't sounded better. 6. The Doors - Live At The Matrix 1967: The Complete Masters (3-CD) --- Even though the CD version isn't a box set and is just a digipak, I'm counting it since the vinyl version is a box set and I'm going to eventually buy the vinyl box set too. This set puts to shame the 2008 incomplete 2-CD release that was sourced from generational tapes. Finally after 15 years after acquiring the original tapes, they release the complete Matrix tapes (sans the chatter/tuning between the songs.) 7. Van Halen - S/T MFSL Hybrid SACD - This audiophile reissue of Van Halen's debut album from MOFI sounds fantastic. Definitely a winner. If you don't own the DCC GOLD version from the '90s, this is a good way to get a great sounding version. I can't wait for the remaining early 5 VH Roth-fronted albums to be released by MOFI. 8. U2 - Songs Of Surrender (4-CD) - Nice to hear alternate/re-imaginings of 40 songs from their catalogue. This set might not be for most people since nothing can really live up to the original versions. But this project they put together brings something different and refreshing to their catalog. I seemed to have enjoyed this set more than many fans. Hearing some of these songs performed live might be interesting in a small intimate setting. Though, the originals are still the ones you want to hear at big arena/stadium settings. 9. Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (3-CD, 1-Blu-ray) - The new remix of the concert on the first CD is fantastic and was the main selling point for me. I think I now own 6 or 7 different versions of this historic Elvis Concert. 2nd CD is the rehearsal concert remastered and the 3rd CD is the bonus songs remastered that were recorded after the show. The Blu-ray contains the video of the show. 10. The Rolling Stones - Hackney Diamonds (1-CD, 1-Blu-ray) Box Set. ----- I'm counting this since the box set version is the only way you can get the Blu-ray with the fantastic Atmos mix. The Atmos mix blows away the other mixes on the various vinyl, CD, and Hi-res digital downloads that were made available. I should know, I bought 15 variants of the album, mainly for different artwork, colored vinyl, etc and have carefully listened to each and every one of them. All the vinyl variants use the same mix as the CD and Hi-res digital download variants. The vinyl versions probably use a different mastering than the CD/digital download variants. The vinyl variants don't seem as compressed as the CD and Hi-res digital download versions. But, overall, the Atmos version on the Blu-ray is the one to get if you have a setup that is capable of playing Atmos. 11. Billy Idol - S/T 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition (2-CD) ---- This reissue is fantastic if you are a Billy Idol fan. The White Wedding Clubland Extended Remix at the end of the first disc is fantastic and makes the whole reissue worth it. Also the previously unreleased live 1982 show from the Roxy is fantastic and makes this reissue well worth it. 12 Motley Crue - Crucial Crue (5-CD) ----- This set was kind of a lazy release for most fans who already have everything. This set brings nothing new to the table. No extras whatsoever. Also, the remasters used in this set are not new and only uses previous remasters. But for someone like me, who never owned their first 5 albums on CD (only first 3 on vinyl,) this set is a great way to get their first 5 albums on CD all at once for a good price.
Great list Phil! I don't know much about Camel? But John Wetton, Thin Lizzy, Jethro Tull, Greg Lake Mott the Hoople! 2nd Mortgage required! Most enjoyable!
Wow that Camel is absolutely amazing

50 box sets this year? I didn't realise there were so many.
I only bought one this year .. Tarja Turunan's "Living the Dream".
Excellent series of videos Phil, couldn't agree more with the number 1, the Camel set is superbly done and Stephen W Tayler is the remixing master

Did i miss something, or why wasn't the Dire Straits live 1978-1992 box set somewhere in the top 50? I find that box set incredible.
I couldn’t find a copy so I still haven’t heard it!
@@NowSpinningMagazine fair enough
No Eric Clapton "the Definitive 24 Nights" which came out in June? What a shame, it was my #1.
I imagine it’s wonderful but my budget would not stretch that far!
