Marc Warnke, "The Goat Guy," at packgoats.com on the Kimberlite Ranch shows how to teach goats to come when called. Not a good idea to train with treats. You will find out!
Having the treat noise in the jar adds the incentive to know the command, meaning they were going to get a treat. Associated with the noise.

It's a really nice looking herd of animals Marc. When they're all together, you can kind of see the overall conformation you're striving for. They're impressive. Big, strong workers.
I was surprised by how quickly they responded when called too. Pretty handy skill for them to know. Strong work.

500 yards away and they came running. Impressive! That’s inspiring for me to get to that point with my herd.

Goat are their fastest when they hear treats in a can. Sometime ill put rocks in a tin can like a big rattle and have some oat in my pocket for when they find my. The woods are thick here so sound don’t travel.

It is beautiful, huh? It reminds me of what I think they call the intermontane west-huge stretches of hilly, mostly dry land between the Rockies and Sierra.

I started mine in the bottle. They'd be off doing baby goat stuff and I'd tell "babies!" Without any hesitation they'd be there ASAP to get their milk. Then the rate of reinforcement faded with weaning.

Wouldn't it be better to train to a whistle or cowbell? If you are off ranch and a sudden storm came in wouldn't it be better if all household could call them in?

Our goats used to swarm around me for food like a pack of piranhas; honestly a bit dangerous for all involved and pretty stressful to deal with.
One day, in a moment of inspiration, I decided to teach them the word "shoo"... oh wait, no, not "shoo", "shoe!" - the weapon on the end of my foot, that I can lay on their side and rapidly apply uncomfortable pressure. 95% of the goats learned that day to stay the hell out of my way while I feed them, waiting in an orderly fashion for their turn. Not that I pushed 95% of the goats, but most were smart enough to understand the discomfort of their comrades and the general reason for it (too close to human who has declared a shoeing frenzy). The remaining 5% took a couple of weeks, but got the message eventually. Now the deal is fully understood; I never have to say "shoe" and feeding is a respectful activity, no matter if it's hay or their favourite treat.
At the same time, I taught them not to take hay from the bale if I put it down, but to wait for me to distribute it, regardless of whether I'm near enough to immediately defend it. This probably took another couple of weeks to sink in and was pretty annoying to teach, since it meant running back to the hay bale in a fury whenever one of them approached it, but well worth it, since now the piranha situation can't happen around a vacant bale and they also don't mess it up while I'm gone.
I was honestly astonished how quickly most of them learnt these good behaviours, given how strong their initial urge was to do the opposite.

So? If not all the goats get a treat for returning. Does that motivate the ones that missed out to return quicker next time ?
