Ding Liren's beautiful Carlsbad victory vs Inarkiev

  • Featured is the beautiful chess game between Ding Liren and Ernesto Inarkiev from the 2015 World Cup. In response to Inarkiev declining the Queen's Gambit, Ding exchanges on d5 and continues with the Positional variation, Bg5. After 6 moves the popular Carlsbad structure surfaces. Ding chooses the central expansion plan with f3/e4 and soon obtains an ideal pawn center that Inarkiev pressures. Inarkiev's position begins to slip after a queen retreat, allowing Ding to assume a strong queen post on c3 where she facilitates a bishop reposition. Ding's winning tactical sequence with his minor pieces, as his majors form a battery on the h-file, is really a thing of beauty.

When I started learning chess, as usual, everyone recommended e4 openings. I wanted to be contrarian, so I started playing d4 openings. From there, I found Liren, who is now my favorite player!

I guess you can't say Inarkiev didn't fight brave until the bitter end. I wish we could know what his plans were to win or hold a draw, but to keep on playing in this struggle shows a good sportsman. At least in my eyes.

If a game is worth presenting it should NOT be an instrument for teaching chess. A good game CANNOT be enjoyed. Its progress is FOREVER being interrupted. I am going somewhere else.
