- Celebrating the arrival of the first mango of the season with this heirloom recipe. Not a kootu, or kuzhambu but a masiyal kuzhambu using raw mangoes.

Ingredients:
· Raw mango - 350 gms
· Moong dal - 1 cup (boiled)
· Asafoetida - 1 tsp
· Tamarind - small gooseberry size
· Mustard seeds
· Urad dal - 1 tsp
· Curry leaves - 1 sprig
· Salt
· Turmeric powder
Ingredients: Spice paste
· Black pepper - 2 tsp
· Red chillies - 5 nos
· Urad dal - 2 tsp
· Grated coconut - 2 tbsp
· Asafoetida - ½ tsp
Method:
1. In a vessel, add water and drop a small gooseberry size tamarind and bring to a boil along with turmeric & salt.
2. Add the cut raw mangoes to the boiling tamarind water.
3. Partially cover & cook the mangoes.
4. In a wok, heat oil & ghee. When hot, add ingredients mentioned under spice paste except coconut.
5. Fry all items. Finally add grated coconut and switch off stove. Set aside to cool.
6. Grind this to an almost fine paste.
7. To the cooked mangoes, add the boiled moong dal and more water to alter consistency.
8. Check for salt.
9. Add the ground spice paste and bring to a boil.
10. Heat a mixture of oil and ghee and temper mustard seeds, urad dal, red chillies and curry leaves and pour over the masiyal kuzhambu.
11. Serve hot with rice/idly/dosai.

There's a Pallakad manga kootan or pulishery in which we do not add paruppu, increase. Coconut ...and add beaten curd instead of puli....and of course vellam to offset the Puli

It’s not Manga Masiyal. Seems like poricha Kuzhambu but made with Manga. Like Kanchipuram side Iyengar’s Devasam Kuzhambu but we do without the Pasi paruppu.

Please dont smell the dish by taking the laddle to your nose that looks very bad ,sorry to say this. if you want to smell just wave your palm towards your face so that the air would bring the smell that looks neat and good.

Same type before adding ground paste and paruppu we bring manga to room temperature and grind to fine paste. This we in malnad side Karnataka call as appe saaru which can be had as soup or can be had with rice. Thank you for sharing this recipe 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👌👌
