I've been playing the tenor uke for about 10 years. Always low G, or what's called linear tuning. (Guitar finger picker since the late 60s.) The transition was very easy. I like 'bass" on my thumb, as I finger pick my uke too. I think re-entrant strings, or high G, is great for strumming chords. I always thought the wound low G had a different tone. I'm looking forward to trying a plain G low G set, based on this video. Thanx!
Hi Russ. I just got my first tenor uke. It shipped to me with a high G ... and I would prefer the low G. Your suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thank you!
I just changed my Uke to Low-G ... It sound so lively and nice. I can play more notes. Yet as the new string is so smooth and soft, I can move between segment easily.
That was some BOSS playing!! I went to an unwound having only had wound. There is a sound difference. Deeper tone and it seems to be greater sustain in the unwound. I have a few Ukuleles and enjoy the different sound from each one.
Hi Steven. I've always used tenor, low G, as I finger pick uke (and guitar).I want that lowest note on my thumb. I've always used AQUILA NEW NYLGUT low G strings, which have a wound (metal over nylon) low G strings. I recently switched to PHD low G which have a plane low G string. Both are good
Is there a particular brand and gauge of strings you recommend (with a low G) for a tenor uke? I just got my new uke on Saturday. It's a Luna grapevine tenor. Koa with cutaway and Fishman pup system. Love everything about it ... except it shipped to me with a high G (where I would prefer a low G)... especially after seeing this informative video! Kindly advise... and thanks so much. 😎🎸👍
I just got my tenor low G out again after not playing it for a while and I forgot how much I love it! I can't put it down now! It's an unwound string, actually a classical guitar string. (It works!) I'm playing a Kala ebony ukulele.
I love the uke you are playing. What company? Looks Hawaiian. I'm looking for a tenor to add to collection but staying under $600 if possible. Thank you Terry
I have a tenor with a high G for the occasional times I prefer it, but my absolute go to is on my KTM-25 and KTM-00 with the unwound low G for the richer tones and more versatile play.
Hi Terry, Yes, yes. Low G is great, but so is high g. It is not one or the other it is both. Thanks for all those awesome examples. Your 5 reasons were great, however I was disappointed that you didn't mention the differences between wound an unwound. I would also prefer less 'fluff' and 'hype' talk and more useful technique and theory instruction. Just my preference/opinion. Thanks Terry - Outstanding playing - much appreciated.
The extra range is a huge advantage. Another huge advantage is a low-G ukulele can be played to sound similar to a high-G instrument by playing on the C, E, and A string. A high-G ukulele cannot be played to sound similar to a low-g ukulele.
I’m a premium member for over 2 years. You convinced me to switch to wound low G on my Kala tenor over a year ago and I haven’t looked back. I don’t know if the unwound LG will fit on my nut without modifications. I really liked your Spanish finger style with the LG. Keep up the energy Terry.
It all comes down to extended range. Unwound low G doesn’t work, IMO, on a concert size, though, where a wound one is okay. I like a low G better on a tenor, though.
@@kithg I tried a Fremont Soloist Wound Low G on my concert, but rejected it because it was too floppy. Even though the package says it is for "Soprano - Concert - Tenor", don't believe it. The Aquila Red Low G for concert sounds comparable to the C string (which is white so I think it's an Aquila nylgut variety), with similar sustain.
@@kithg I guess it comes down to finding the string you like. Personally, I don't like the squeaks of wound strings. On my solid-body electromagnetic-pickup tenor ukes, I chose flat-wound or polished (half-flat) steel strings to avoid the squeaks.
For those who were wondering (like me) why you repeatedly emphasize "unwound, not wound." There is a video from 3 yrs ago. ruclips.net/video/R5Nwf0g3w74/видео.html If you jump to the 5:59 mark, the summary was that wound is a bit brighter, unwound is a bit softer. I'm still not clear on why any of the five magical reasons (which definitely are cool, btw) hinge on playing w/ an unwound low G. It's been a year, people are still wondering, is there something else about wound low G that we should be worried about?
“High G” was just “workaround” for small size instruments not resonating well to low G. Including Koaloha from this video LOL ;) frankly, I am not impressed with sound quality of “power chords”. Take guitar for power chords. Or play duet.
From my perspective as a composer, the extra range it provides is the big one for me. More range = more possibilities.
I totally agree with you!

haha Thanks! Yes, that's the best thing to do, having different instruments to change it up!

Nice!!! keep rocking!
Could you please recommend a low G soprano..I'm not very up on ukuelels but would like to know how and were and what to buy..thank you.
Two minutes in and I'm hooked...❤
Thanks for a lot of nice tips for me in my start uke ❣️
I love the uke you are playing. What company? Looks Hawaiian. I'm looking for a tenor to add to collection but staying under $600 if possible. Thank you Terry
Do you need to Chord differently with low G string in place? I think i like the crispness of the High G better. I pretty much just strum on the Uke.
I have a tenor with a high G for the occasional times I prefer it, but my absolute go to is on my KTM-25 and KTM-00 with the unwound low G for the richer tones and more versatile play.
Yes, you should!! :)
Yep, low g fan here. I aim to place them on my Tenor Uke once I finish building it. Also thanks for reminding me I should have a set in my P.O. Box.
Nice!!! your welcome!
I have a wound Low G on my Romero Creations ST Concert. Now I’m interested in the unwound Low G after watching this video.
Yes!! I'm glad! We have amazing set of strings at the store: store.ukelikethepros.com/collections/strings
👍🏼 Spanish finger style. Love it!
thanks
That was Day Tripper, The Beatles. I like the extended range and the finger picking opportunities. I might try it!

Terry the OG man!
❤ low g on soprano ukulele
Just converted my Ohana Tenor to Low g after seeing you play it for some time here, yep you converted me Terry.
haha! nicee!! you are going to love it!

I’ve always wanted to get two identical ukuleles … one with high and one with low g, in both soprano and tenor :)
NO reason you cant.. Ive got the same plan :)
I have an Aquila low g string red series still trying to string it to the soprano uku
you got this!
What brand? Why is it so hard to find out what brand it is?

My next purchase will be a tenor with Low g. 🤩
yess!!! go, go, go!! store.ukelikethepros.com
I like the low g cuz it seems to sound closer to a guitar sound…?

Nice! Team Low G haha thanks for the support!
I thought this was going to be about wound versus unwound. Nice playing though.
Low G..❤️
Love #2 Johnny Cash!
Yes, you just can't get a realistic Johnny Cash "boom ditty" strum without a low G.
cool! me too!
My reply to the video (just watched it) and yes, #2 would be my reason. Or at least my favorite reason.
You missed that Low G has twice as many scales than a high G for improvisation
thank you!!! Yes!
3 minutes in is when he starts to talk about the 5 reasons.
It all comes down to extended range. Unwound low G doesn’t work, IMO, on a concert size, though, where a wound one is okay. I like a low G better on a tenor, though.
I put an Aquila Red Low G string on a concert and it works fine. It has about the same tension and volume as the C string.
@@stanleysokolow Whichever low G I had sounded floppy and had pitch, but it didn’t ring. Put a wound one and it’s much better.

Low G, allows me to play riffs, play rock n roll, vamp... all sorts see me @robulele

Put a low G wound on my Oscar Schmidt and the back came unglued.
Weird... 😬

MAN.. It took TWO MINUTES and FIFTY FIVE seconds to get to the first reason. talk about a LOOOOOOOONG intro..
Drive me nuts how he move so much and doesnt get to the point.
@@Yannick432 Yeh. .shame.. Cos he has the makings of a great channel. But long winded intro really kill off the viewer interest and retention rate.
