- This is a short video showing the functioning ammo counter on my live fire M41A Pulse Rifle. I got the counter from Dan Vincent over at www.lightbender...
(1.) I have read a lot of the comments on this video and it seems that a lot of people are confused so I will try to clear up some things. First off, this is a live firing, semi-automatic reproduction rifle based on the most badass sci-fi movie of all time, Aliens. If you have never seen this movie, I suggest you do so. Here's a short clip from the film • Aliens - How to use a ... . I made this gun because as a kid, I fell in love with this movie and thought the props and special effects were far ahead of its time. Especially the Pulse Rifle and when I got older, I realized I could not buy one so I went through the proper channels, filled the necessary ATF tax stamps and put it together myself.
(2.) Now let me explain, this gun is not from Call Of Duty, it is NOT from Halo, and no, it doesn't shoot lasers or plasma or whatever else I've stumbled across in the comments. Remember, this is a live firing gun (shoots real bullets) based on a movie. In said movie, the FICTIONAL "Pulse Rifle" fires 10mm explosive tipped caseless rounds. The rounds are propelled using an "electronic pulse action", hence the name "Pulse Rifle". It never shot lasers both in the movie and in real life. In fact, the real screen used Pulse Rifles on the set of the film were made from a Thompson M1 submachine gun, Remington 870 Wingmaster and parts from a SPAS 12 shotgun. The real life gun shot .45ACP and 12 gauge, the same as this gun in the video.
(3.) A bunch of people seem to be overly concerned about the placement and visibility of the LED ammunition counter on the right side of the receiver. I have read comments ranging from "the red light will give your position away to enemy snipers" to "is this gun only designed for left handed shooters because the ammo counter is on the right side of the gun". The reason for the placement of the ammo counter is because that's where it was in the F****** movie! It was designed to look cool on film, that simple. I am not taking this prop into combat lol. However, I do have a small toggle switch near the right side of the trigger guard that allows the user to turn the ammo counter/light completely off if necessary.
(4.) A lot of you guys are giving the dude who is shooting a lot of flak. Let me elaborate on this. This was the 1st time this guy has ever handled or fired this weapon. This gun is not your typical AR15 that weighs 7 pounds. This Pulse Rifle prop weighs almost exactly as much as a fully loaded M249 SAW with a 200 round box (approximately 22 pounds for all you commenting kids who have only shot guns through a PS4 controller). Another thing I'd like to mention, due to both my job and my hobby, I have fired a plethora of weapons throughout my day, ranging from belt fed machineguns, to integrated suppressed SMG's to even 40mm grenade launchers and I can honestly say that the gun in this video has one of the heaviest charging handles to operate that I have ever encountered. This is because it is a closed bolt version of an M1 (that's naturally open bolt) and needs a lot of spring tension to cycle and operate properly. This is the reason the guy in the video struggles to operate it in the beginning.

Neat custom build! Wish it sounded like the actual prop in the movie with the M41A1's distinctive growl and muzzle flash.
I think something akin to a _"Muffler"_ used on Cars can apply here.
Even though muzzle attachments already exsist.
The sound designer used a phaser effect on the rifle sound in the film and there is no way you can replicate a audio effect in real life

It didn't impress me much. Especially ejecting brass to the left. Great way to send hot brass down the blouse of your FPFP (Frontal Parapet Fighting Position). A.K.A. "foxhole." Also, it looked like a bunch of stuff where one little thing goes bad on it and your whole damned weapon's kaput. But it looked like it should be in a "space movie."

@@patrickb-man1309 We ALWAYS had a "leftie" somewhere back when I was in the army. They actually made a "Left Handed Brass Deflector" for them. With the M-16, it spit out the empty casing in a bit of an arc to the right. Which was great if you were right-handed. If you were left-handed and shooting with the butt against your left shoulder, it could sometimes pitch the brass down the neck of your shirt. Pretty much, a combat team could always find some way to make things work together -- with or without a brass deflector.
@@patrickb-man1309 I'll admit I'm a bit of a "cave-man" and follower of the "KISS" (Keep It Simple Stupid) Rule in most things, especially in those things where my life depends on whatever gadget it is I'm using. Watching that video -- and seeing some of the "problems" the fellow had cocking it, shooting it and then trying to pump another shotgun round into the "grenade launcher," it just seemed to me to be an idea that needs a bit more work. If it was a 'real' combat weapon in real combat, it HAS to work flawlessly. Otherwise, while the guy was trying to jack another shot shell (and got stuck) someone with a flintlock could have picked him off.
It's always good to keep one handy. For close encounters.

Ive felt that way around some firearms myself. Unfamiliar locations of charging handle, safety, and personally I hate the Rem 870.
First time I met Maw Deuce I was a total klutz. Years later as a tank commander it was like an old friend.
If you read OPs explanation, you would know this was in fact his very first time firing a weapon.

Since about 2005 or so, the military had added a Rounds Counter to their wish-list for SOPMOD Phase III (Special Operations Peculiar MODification kit - a set of accessories for M4/HK416/SCAR-L's used by Special Operations units). It didn't materialize in the way they wanted it to, in the time frame they desired, so it was left out of the program that eventually gave us the M18 MHS - if the technology had been developed in time, and had been done the way SOCOM wanted it, the M18 candidates would have all been required to have or attach a Rounds Counter to them, and they would have been a general issue upgrade item to all military M4/M16 platform weapons by now.
"What went wrong?"
Reliability was a huge factor. As was accurate round counts. It's one thing to have a small circuit board that has a preprogrammed set of numbers in it, that knows to reset every time a switch gets activated. It's quite another to have a counter that can actually count the number of rounds in a magazine that may be partially full. In the end, they couldn't get a system working that was robust enough for infantry use, that also took into account things like partial magazines, "out of network" magazines (as one idea involved retrofitting every mag in inventory with a sensor/counter package), and so on.
Not really. Throw enough money at it and it can be done.. round count issue? Easy... calibrated to resistance.. think time domain reflectometer. Signal passes through bottom of mag to feed lips. More or less rounds and there's your resistance...

Ok i read the description, it was a little hard to tell because of how dark the video was, but I was suspecting that this gun was built around a civilian reproduction Thompson. Turns out i was right. Very cool prop my guy. Also i had no idea the pulse rifle in the alien franchise used thompson M1's as the base model.
