Traveling in the rain is totally fine and I would say better than horizontal racks because you have less leverage on the vehicle. Really hard to say about gas mileage. The bulk of the weight is directly behind the vehicle. You would really have to compare a horizontal rack on a long trip compared to this one. I don’t notice a huge decrease in gas mileage.

Keep mine locked too and make my trips in and out of stores quick. It's a shame we have to do this but thieves are everywhere. 😡
