    PLEASE NOTE:
This is Part 2 following a LIVE Part 1 right here:
    ruclips.net/user/li...
Memory quilts are incredibly special! And also, often incredibly challenging for free motion quilting at the longarm.
Because this one is made 100% from clothes, the fabric content varies. There’s
    denim
    lace
    t-shirts
    voile (very fine and thin)
    button plackets
    hand stitched details
Even the backing is made from clothing bits, and has a ton of seams, so it’s been stabilized to keep everything reasonably flat and stable.
Care will need to be taken to keep all the memory bits intact. Topics will include:
    planning and loading
    design choices
    thread
and of course the freehand quilting

Haha! I see your point...but if I've learned anything over all these quilts it is that truly ANYTHING can happen, and I can figure it out. Eventually. Sometimes my answer has been to walk away overnight 😄

Susan, thank you so much for collaborating on this quilt with me. I can tell this will be a VERY special quilt for one of the boys. Being a longarm owner, I learned so much from you! You are such a great teacher, problem solver, and are such a generous and gracious person! I can't wait to see it. It looks so beautiful here! And thank you for your kind words.

I just finished a memory quilt for my cousin out of my uncle's tee shirts and flannel shirts. I wished I would of watched you first. I could not figure out the color of thread or design for free motion, I sent it to a long arm business. It turned out beautifully, but I really wanted to do it myself.

Oh, we tried to make it live...several times😂 I've since learned that more folks in my neighborhood were having internet troubles. We pivoted.

Thanks to you for hints. I now also use cans no one eats with my hand on the top of quilt. (Unfortunately had one roll off and hit just right on the floor and exploded. Scared everyone upstairs.). Thx again from NWPA.

The basic thread path is exactly like my all-over feathers which I offer a free class for and the link is in the description. Beyond that I hope you can understand - I reserve teaching the designs in detail for paid students. I love offering free content, but teaching is my "day job". ❤️

Hope this makes sense. The piecing on the top quilt were the seams pressed open or they pressed to the side? I was wondering this because of the different types of fabric. Thank you again for finishing and the problem solving that you shared with us.

They varied but were mostly open to keep the bulk down.

    Hi Susan,
    May I ask your opinion?
Recently, you spoke about joining some backing fabric, where you left the selvedges on bc you said they were really flat and not super thick like some are. (I can’t remember which video it was.) Did it end up causing any problems?
I think you said you took a one inch seam allowance.
Then I think you said you pressed the allowances open, is that right?
Well, I just joined 3 lengths of backing fabric, and bc I wanted to match the pattern, I pressed under one inch along one edge, overlapped on the next piece, and glued it down with Elmer’s, then ironed it to set, to hold the position while I sewed it together. (I was planning to press open bc these seams are going to have to go perpendicular to the rollers on my frame. ) Well, I guess I did too good a job of glueing them together and now I can’t open the seam allowances and I don’t want to prewash the backing. What should I do? Will the dbl thick seam allowances cause me a lot of trouble? The quilt is only 72” front to back, as it will be loaded on the frame, so it’s not excessively big. My selvedges are also very smooth and not thick, so I left them on one edge, but the matching edge is 4” and will have to be cut off. Shd I keep 1” seams, even if I can’t press open? Or shd I trim them smaller?
I appreciate any suggestions you can make! Thank you! 🌷

If it was me, I think I'd yank them open and trim! I don't recall which video you were referring to, but for my own quilts I much prefer to trim the selvage off. That said, I have lots of clients who leave them on, and so I leave it as they chose. It's not a deal-breaker, it just does create a thicker line.

@@StitchedBySusanThank you. I appreciate the feedback. I think you were doing someone else’s quilt and showing how you loaded the quilt bf you jumped into quilting it. It was pretty recent; maybe within the last month or month and a half. You do a lot though, so I can understand why you might not remember. 😊

I know what I forgot to tell you bf: That quilting design you’re using, I think you called it a boomerang 🪃? Well, to me it looks just like the top of a pineapple! 🍍 😂
