    It’s Alive! It’s ALIVE!
Simulacrum is a complicated high-level spell that creates a construct person that’s debatably alive. There’s a lot of weird applications, fringe cases, and questions people have about simulacrums and assuming your wizard gets up to casting 7th level spells it’s something you should at least consider. Get a wagonload of snow and practice your best mad scientist laugh as we go through everything you need to know!

In the PHB it states that all spells can be cast through a higher spell slot.
So a level 15 wizard can start the cloning process.
But the real fun is at level 17.
Simulacrum cannot learn new abilities. But True Polymorph RAW "replaces their statistics".
Therefore, in their new form they can heal themselves, regain abilities and more.
I'm playing a Necromancer wizard who will use this cloning process to buff up my undead army. Death Knights, Dracoliches, undying councillors. And they'll all keep their personality, which is mine.
Important note. If you polymorph into a legendary creature, you'll lose their legendary actions, lair actions and regional effects :(

I would argure that it would be better to make the armee that you cast Simulacrum on yourself and that the Sims cast the spell via Wish, so you forgo the cost and the immense ammount of time spent to build an army. That way you can also use this in the mid of a fight, since the Sim shares your initiative. Just go into a dungeon and in a fight order your Sim to wish for another Sim of you and so on. All in the very same round of combat without any extra cost after the first one by level 17

if the PC is the sort that would remain loyal to their prime self then you could get a sim chain using the spell first then once the second sim is made start a new chain using wish. then you'd have an army of sims minus a 9th level spell and one sim every 12 hours only missing one 7th. 9th level geas the sim with broken chain of command if you have to. also couldn't you just order the first sim of any chain to pass along the order to obey the prime and bypass the whole chain of command thing? it doesn't say anything about orders being ignored after the casters death, so.

I wanted to point out that healing the simulacrum might be possible through the use if ioun stones of regeneration or rings if regeneration, wish is also a possibility because wish.
The issue is that the heal proposed in the spell seems to be presented as an OPTION because it's worded as "you can" and not "you must" which is weird. As a DM i would rule that items that grant passive regeneration or class features such as second wind would heal the simulacrum.

As it stands, Simulacrums RAW can heal by resting. Second Wind uses the same language of “you can,” and that definitely doesn’t exclude healing via rest for fighters.

@@SkullSplitterthere is another strange interaction. If you have a battle Smith Artificer of lvl 3 or higher the steel defender has a three times a day repair ability that specifically works on constructs (like the Simulacrum) so give the Simulacrum one of the better staves, a few non attunement Wands or other items that allow casting and send it out with a 9Th lvl Aid and False Life on it and you make magic items while your Simulacrum does the adventuring. You can also use , I believe, instant summons and link all the magic items to the gems and collect all your toys if the Simulacrum dies.

Step 1: Wish for a simulacrum of yourself.
    Step 2: Sleep
Step 3: Have your simulacrum make a simulacrum of you and have them have that simulacrum obey your commands
Step 4: Have that simulacrum Wish for 25000 gp worth of ruby dust. You'll need to do this every 16 or 17 simulacrum.
Step 5: Proceed with Clone Army scheme
Step 6: Have each simulacrum Wish for unreasonable things that you want. It doesn't matter if they lose the ability to cast Wish again since they can't regain spell slots. (Unless one of them Wishes that they they can regain spell slots and in that case Wishes that the simulacrum that can't cast Wish again can cast Wish again)

There's an even more efficient way to do this.
      Step 1: be a lvl 17 wizard
Step 2: have both your lvl 7 and lvl 9 spell slots available
Step 3: cast simulacrum on yourself using your lvl 7 spell slot. this will require the normal material components and take 12 hours to cast.
Step 4: note that your simulacrum still has their lvl 9 spell slot
Step 5: take a long rest. note that your simulacrum will not regain any spell slots, but you will.
Step 6: have your simulacrum cast wish. have them choose the "basic use" of the wish spell, and choose simulacrum as the spell to be duplicated. they must choose YOU (the original) as the target of the simulacrum spell, NOT themselves.
Step 7: note that using wish to duplicate the simulacrum spell in this way removes the need for any material components, and reduces the casting time to 1 action
Step 8: note that your simulacrum's simulacrum (ie simulacrum 2) has all their spell slots! this is because they are a simulacrum of YOU, who haven't cast any spells yourself since before step 5.
Step 9: simulacrum 2 repeats step 6 to create simulacrum 3, again using the original (NOT any of the simulacrums) as the target of the simulacrum spell
Step 10: repeat step 9 ONCE EVERY SIX SECONDS

@@joshmeyer8172Here’s a neat trick. Cast Simulacrum again. Your previous Simulacrum will die, but Simulacrums don’t die when their caster dies. Now, you have two Simulacrum chains!

8:17 It can't learn and grow would be my reason, as a soul would become stronger the more it experiences. The spell acts as a focus that combines the accumulated memories and abilities, but it doesn't act as a replacement for it. Like a cyborg/android it has a copy of all your memories, but without the sentience to be aware of itself.

Pretty sure it reverts to snow but you can have fun with it. Cast Simulacrum cast True Polymorph choose a creature (like an adult gold dragon) clone from that form once the dragon form is grown you drop below 100hp and use an insta kill spell. The clone is claimed be the soul and now you have an Adult Gold Dragon with your mind in it AND can revert to a humanoid form and use those magic items and be a dragon. Also there is an argument for you to keep your class levels since things like reincarnate let's you keep class levels and you just force reincarnated into a Gold Dragon.

Step 2: Use your 9th level Mystic Arcanum to cast Wish -> Simulacrum targeting yourself
Step 3: After completing a long rest, both you and your Simulacrum cast Wish->Simulacrum targeting yourself (Warlocks cast level 6+ spells through Mystic Arcanum, not spell slots, so they recharge on a long rest)
Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for as many long rests as able, doubling the number of "you" each day (1->2->4->8->16)
Step 5: With a fortnight of preparation time, Conquer the world with over 16,384 simulacrums - all of which can use your Mystic Arcanum (including Wish) normally and have a Limited Wish every 2.5 days. Alternatively, repeat the process for a month for OVER 1 BILLION simulacrums

Unfortunately this doesn’t work, since you can only have one Simulacrum active at a time, but there’s a simple fix to do exponentials!
Have every other Simulacrum cast Simulacrum, creating a new Simulacrum, but destroying their old one in the process. This still works out to be far more efficient than just having one Simulacrum chain.

  • @nickm9102

You mentioned moral implications at the start that got me thinking just how morally questionable can you get with this spell?
Usually I make a copy of my character so fully aware of what is done and can almost work as one since they think the same way.
I also am planning to find an NPC Wizard that can cast True Polymorph then Wish for a Simulacrum of them then use the Simulacrum to cast True Polymorph on my character since the DM rules that True Polymorph allows you to retain class abilities of the PC so find a form that can change shape into a humanoid form and go from there. I may go one step further and create a Clone in the new form and make the change immune to dispell.

  • @luckerooni1153

I'd argue that the Simulacrum has no soul because of the many specific definitions it is given, such as, "You shape an illusory duplicate..." "The duplicate is a creature, partially real and formed from ice or snow..." "...the illusion uses all the statistics of the creature it duplicates, except that it is a construct." So by following this, you can state absolutely, as written, a simulacrum is an illusion spell that has achieved materialization and become an illusory construct which is made of snow but looks like it is real. Not only does it not say anything related to souls and many things which would suggest it is a combination of an object and an illusion that has formed the minimum requirements to be described as a creature, but it also specifically states that it cannot learn, cannot gain spell slots (thus not connected to the Weave), cannot grow, and cannot heal by normal means. There is nothing suggesting the simulacrum can actually even speak any more than any other illusion could as it is just a construct illusion made of snow. If it dies, you will not be able to speak to its spirit using Speak with Dead because there is no corpse, and Soul Cage cannot interact with it on death as it is considered a construct and not a humanoid. By every measure, you should not expect a soul to be in the Simulacrum.

    • @nickm9102
      @nickm9102 Месяц назад

I would agree as far as a Simulacrum not having a soul but that said. 17 lvl Wizard.
      Wish for Simulacrum.
      Next day prepare True Polymorph
Simulacrum is considered a lvl 17 creature so CR17 Gold Dragon is an acceptable form. After the 1 hour duration it is permanent so you now have an Adult Gold Dragon that has to obey your orders. Have it change shape into a humanoid form. Give it some magic items. And now you have a powerful ally, freed up your ability to cast Simulacrum, and created a potential mount/transportation.

I have a fairly simple fix to the simulacrum infinite loop. And it’s all based in the moral grey bits of the spell. Any wizard who would think to do, let alone actually do this setup is probably someone who thinks they are magic Batman. Always having a plan. But of course that is rarely ever true. But what it DOES mean is that the clones ALSO think they are magic Batman. And likely will try to find ways to usurp the original in various convoluted ways, similar to how a poorly worded order can make a golem kill it’s own master

    Simulacrum + True Polymorph
Take the 'Clone Army' and now make it worse!
Your Sim is no longer snow and ice but flesh and blood. Whatsmore, his PERSONALITY remains intact as per R.A.W. so he is still loyal to you. Remember that Bael regenerates? Well, the Sim's stats are replaced with the stat block of his new form so his crappy hit points skyrocket, he can heal and he can regain spell slots!
I LOVE this combo as a Necromancer because there are a few monsters of CR17-20 that a Necromancer would love to have as loyal servants.
    - *Nightwalkers:* "Command Undead"? Pfft. Amateur Hour. The Necromancer's wet dream with zero risk of it turning on you
    - *Death Knights:* Another front-line monster to pair with my Nightwalker. Undead are immune to the NWs Annihalting Aura :)
    - *Bael:* Animate Dead AT WILL! Invisibility at will! 8th-level Inflict Wounds at will! Counterspell! Regenerate 20HP at the start of his turn!*
    - *Titivilus:* the flying spy who can cast G. Invisibility, Nondetection and Mislead as well as Animate Dead at will)
    - *Ancient Brass Dragon:* Of course. A flying mount and Shapechanger. In fact, have all your Sims become this so they can Change Shape into the other options on this list whenever they want! Imagine your enemy manages to injure your Nightwalker only for it to sprout wings, roar, and get back up as an Ancient Brass Dragon! "...Round Two...".
    - *Adult Red Shadow Dragon:* My personal favourite because when a Shadow Dragon kills a target with their breath weapon, that target is resurrected as a Shadow that is loyal to the Dragon! I've now got three Generals (Titivilus Bael and this) who can grow their own armies under my Necromancer. Nothing says I can't sick my Dragon on a village or two... Actual supervillain!

That soul would have to come from somewhere. Even huh level wizards should not be able to create a soul. I would rule that some portion of the caster’s soul is “loaned” to the simulacrum for the duration of its existence. Which is also interesting from a role playing perspective in my opinion.

for your clone army. Here a easier and much cheaper version and it can be acheive as soon as 17th level wizard.
You use your 7th level slot to cast simulacrum on yourself: take 12 hour and cost 1500gp.
    Do a long rest
Ask your simulacrum to use his 9th level spell to WISH for a simulacrum of yourself. it take 1 action and cost nothing. Since the wish is duplicating a spell without any of the original spell component and, by raw, their is no DM shenanigans twisting the spell, their is no potential backlash.
Congratz you now have the original simulacrum (A) missing a 7th level spell and a 9th level spell and a simulacrum (B) with all his spell. Now B can also Wish for a simulacrum of yourself creating simulacum C. Then C can cast wish for a simulacrum of yourself creating simulacrum D etc... every 6 second for 0 extra gold.
or you could get your clone army as early as level 15. sure Simulacrum do not have a provision to be upcasted, but their is nothing preventing you from casting simulacrum using a level 8 slot. So your level 15 wizard could cast simulacrum (A) on himself as a level 7 spell.
    Do a long rest
Then then simulacrum A use it's 8th level spell slot to cast simulacrum on yourself creating simulacrum B with all it's spell slot. So simulacrum B can now cast simulacrum on yourself etc... but this version require 12 hours each cast and cost 1500gp.

I absolutely hate the clone army. It's just so unbelievably dumb and people keep mentioning it like something "gamebreaking". Material components? Just use a wish or true polymorph, don't mind those are awesome spells that allow you to actually wish for anything, especially if the DM doesn't want to screw you over, or turn into a dragon, just use them to "break the game". Time? Just keep making them one and a half a day, not that you could've spent this time more thoughtfully. This becomes especially dumb in some possible time restricted campaigns.
I just wish they removed the spell as it makes my migraine go incredibly hard because of those shenanigans.

I'm always amused at how the harshest restriction for simulacrum is always casually tossed to the wayside. By RAW, the creature *lacks* the ability to learn. Clear as day, no ifs and buts, no room for interpretation. Now, just in case this doesn't sound too bad, let me quote the Merriam-Webster definition for the word learn; To gain or aquire knowledge of or skill in something by study, experience, or being taught.
This means your icy minions are useless as spies as they won't be able to learn or gather intel.
They are useless as messengers as they can't learn even the simplest of sentences.
They also will become rapidly outdated, as they won't register new allies, enemies, places, passwords etc. They won't even notice if party members, including you, disappear, die or get possessed by ghosts.
It's also very unclear if simulacri are capable of independent action. In fact, everything points to the contrary. Quoted verbatim from the spell description: It obeys your spoken commands, moving and acting in accordance to your wishes and acting on your turn in combat.
Heck, you even have to designate which creatures it must act friendly towards.
The cherry on top? It obeys your *spoken* commands. If any enemy knows your language, you just telegraphed your intentions.
What's that? The literal interpretation is going too far? Don't you all be getting soft now. Go RAW or go home, right?

    • @biblebot3947

How would they know what you’ve said if they can’t learn it, though?

    • @jofu2767
      @jofu2767 Год назад

The whole spell is up for interpretation. Taking that one fact out of context as a definitive statement makes you "that guy".
The context around their ability to learn is in regards to leveling up and gaining class features.
So it's doesn't steal XP off the party, and its safeguarded from usurping the original.
Common sense, if you make a simulcarum with 20 Int, or Cha it can totally do and react to everything mentioned in this video

“The simulacrum lacks the ability to learn or become more powerful” is just in-universe justification for the following line: “it never increases its level or other abilities.”
