It's crazy to me that this video has so many views and likes! July was a band that me and my buddy Herb Harris started in the late 90's. We recorded this 7" split, plus a demo tape, then Herb moved to Austin and we both moved on to other projects. I've had at least six bands since recording this record and Herb has been in at least that many. Herb's band, the Selmanaires had a pretty big following during the early 2000's and my band The Makeout Room put out an EP and an album, plus we recorded another album. None of it sounds anything like this, though. This song was recorded in the bonus room of this guy Seph's parents house on a 4-track tape machine that used cassette tapes. I've looked and looked for our demo tape, but I no longer have a copy of it. Herb and I played probably fewer than a dozen shows under the name July. I'm psyched people are finding it and enjoying it.
I have a copy of this split that a close friend of mine kindly gifted me from Discogs a few years ago. I remember listening to this arcane little gem for the first time when I was 17, back when I was discovering new indie/emo/screamo music basically every week. Fell asleep to it on repeat many times as a heartsick teen, and any time I ever tried to write a slow, sad song, I was always trying to write one that made me feel the way this did, and still does to this day.
I found a blog and in the comments a dude posted an older blog that's long gone through the wayback machine. It had a dude posting about a 2 song demo for this band that he liked. It provided an address in North Carolina to get the demo from a guy named Gabe Johnson. In the inserts on this split, the July side credits "Gabe and Herb" so I'm guessing that's one of the dudes who plays on this. If anyone can find a Gabe Johnson that lived in Apex, North Carolina, call him up.
"lol! what!" Why is acting baffled the go to response for zoomers? moreover, why do they feel the need to spice their every comment with laughter acronyms. It's a stark contrast between old and new internet users. The guy wanted to find info about the band he likes, he's not asking to buy crack. you're acting like a bunch of 80IQ mouthbreathers. learn to infer the context and quit ruining the vibe.
Tried to transcribe the lyrics ( think these are right now ) When we reach the water Full of caffeine and cigarettes In December The air is cold You tell me I've never been this close Down by the beach where We can see for miles We stopped to watch the Sun come up Over the ocean We were sailing into the sunrise Sailing across the ocean That separates us That separates us
This is very close. The only lines that are actually different are: I've never been this *close, and instead of "the sky is pitch black/see for my eyes" the line is "Down the beach where/ we could see for miles/ we stopped to watch the/ sun come up/ over the ocean"
i hate that i cant save this to any playlists, but at the same time that inability to keep this song is art in itself; this work is forever out of our reach
Wow, thanks for posting this. I had this record once upon a time, lost everything in a flood. Totally forgot about it... do you have hinckley? spelling could be off
when we reach the water water full of caffeine and cigarettes in december the air is cold you told me "I've never been this close." down the beach where you can see for miles. If you just found this song, you’re incredibly late and probably 15 years old going through your first midwest emo phase. If you aren’t 15, get over this phase it’s embarrassing af lol
A split release is a release that features more than one artist or project - this was a release where Jeromes Dream contributed a side's worth of music and July contributed their own.

I was born in July of 1998, so I felt obligated to listen to this for that reason alone.

I wonder if any of the bands that broke up in the 90s realize they became a little popular online
