A dash cam is a great investment, I used to see all kind of crazy stuff before installing mine now it only happens if the camera is turned off. LOL

I mounted my backup camera behind the rear window of my hatchback, high up so that the wiring to it runs right above my headliner. Helps keep the rear camera as protected from the elements as the front camera.

Wouldn't it have been easier to route to the wires through the center console and under the backseat?
Also, it's usually a good idea to remove the glovebox to route wires. I've done that many times on many different cars.
Very tidy work! I'm not a fan of untidy wiring or trim removal either, but doing it right once is infinitely less irritating than doing it wrong six times

Great job, Jake. I'm going to be installing a dash cam in my old Volvo 240. For some reason, nobody seems to see it, even with the TV screen headlamps. I thought about a back up cam, but visibility is so great, being a wagon, it is not needed. A rear facing dash cam, though, is fairly likely.

I've actually always wondered how backup cams are installed. I believe the appropriate reaction is "Thanks, I hate it." This feels like the most mind mumbingly annoying experience to have short of actually futxing with the wiring harness. In fairness you made it look easy, but it felt like the car had it's guts ripped out like something out of MadMax, just too install a camera.
It really depends a lot on the car. I did this in a 2010 Focus, and it was much easier. There's still some dash disassembling, but that's just the head unit's installation process.

Usually the head unit's harness will have a "reverse" cable that's used to activate the camera, so you don't have to mess with the tail lights. My '05 Prius has it, I can't believe your BMW doesn't.

i had an e39 m5 back in the day , i took out the passenger seat and ran everything next to the center console . it was much easier

Every car should have forward and rear facing dash cams from factory. Probably inside the rear view mirror assembly.

Secretly disappointed it's not a Buick video... because I literally bought a BPAU this year based on advice from wizard/hoovie it was like 800 bucks and had 1500 in service record going back years.. and new tires. So far I only have maybe 200 bucks in for a jack and a spare and filters/oil.
I gotta get a BMW and/or Merc some day though. I'm too big for a lot of cars and I feel like even the golf you reviewed would be nice at 6'3+ in shoes. Plus most of my family is german. These stereo upgrades are starting to get me pretty brave, I might get myself in trouble.
oh nice, i just used silicone on my window tracks and they roll up and down nice. I really need to look into the stereo upgrade for the BPAU
We're getting there! The Buick is a tire nail magnet and the shop is full of disassembled hybrid but I have a nice pile of parts building for the Buick here soon!

when i put a dash camera's cable into my mazda 3's windsheild frame i just stuffed it in the gap with a shopper's card. I suppose that's not an option here.

The battery in the E46 lives under the trunk floor right below the amp.
