Many towns and cities in the UK have a large Muslim community. However, Savile Town not just a town with a large Muslim community. In Savile Town, Islam is the dominant religion with over 95% of its population being practicing Muslims. The town has 4 main mosques and many educational centres and school aimed at providing its residents with an Islamic education. Join me as I explore this remarkable town!

Even if one doesn't believe in Christianity, it's still sad to see a derelict church. After all, churches are still part of the British national heritage, so they should be appreciated for their cultural and historical value.

I’m a Muslim and went to a Church of England school, it was a great school that taught good ethics and manners etc. They respected my beliefs and I had the choice of sitting out of singing hymns and doing the religious stuff. It is sad that Britain is losing its culture and heritage! With a rich culture you learn to respect other peoples cultures. Wish my Britain would see Muslims, Sikh’s, Hindu’s etc etc for their rich culture and good practices. Not focus on the false portrayal by radical right wingers and Zio media outlets!

Dewsbury resident here. Dewsbury is not a majority Muslim area. It's a 50 /50 split between white and none white. You have isolated one specific area, a suburb, and decided that is the whole town. If you dont like to see churches closed get yourself in them regularly to do the holy stuff. thus keep them open.
As a brit, as a muslim I really appreciate your curiosity and just making judgements based on your own experiences and not whats being fed to everyone on social media.

11:10 FYI. Muslims take off shoes before entering mosques in line with teachings taught to Moses and other prophets of the past as well (pbut). Namely we see in the Bible, Exodus (3:5), God said to Prophet Moses (pbuh), "Do not come any closer, Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
We consider mosques and other places of worship 'houses of God and holy', and probably why we take shoes off before entering, as instructed by the final Prophet Mohammed (pbuh)

There is an incredibly-skewed article in the Daily Mail about Saville Town. Worth noting that the square radius is very small.
My mother is from Dewsbury, but the other side of the River Calder, towards Batley. It's a little more diverse, we've got pictures from the 70s of my parents wedding with the native British neighbours enjoying the festivities! Muslims thrive in communal activities, they want to live near Masjids, halal grocery shops and family. That's why there's pockets of Muslim communities, especially in former industrial towns, where our forefathers left the sub continent to work. That's why you find huge Muslim communities in Dewsbury, Batley, Bradford, Bolton, Blackburn, Preston, Huddersfield etc. Great video, BTW. Reminds me of my teenage visiting these shops and the Markus!

This is all very nice - and I have nothing at all against Islam. I appreciate the objective and informed commentary. However: this is clearly a sanitized form of ghettoisation. It hardly promotes integration and mutual understanding. Formerly cosmopolitan cities like Beirut or Tehran illustrate where we could be heading in the next 50 years. It’s a dystopian future.
The guy literally told you the people were very hospitable and welcoming. He even got a free lift and even welcomed him to the mosque off chance they were going to. And he got some tea and biscuits whilst there. Benefits of being open minded, and not being Daily Mail fed.
You are right it does show that the people who live there don't want to integrate, as a man he spoken to, he moved there to raise his kids purely in a Islamic community away from western influences. That is his right but it is that mind set that will give people who question Islam's place in the uk a huge leg to stand on.

My point was that segregation over integration is not a model that has either a moral or a practical basis. It almost inevitably leads to conflict. In the Middle Ages, in Europe, Jews were often compelled to live in a separate district of a town or city, hence the term ‘ghetto’. We don’t want to head back in that direction do we?

Pretty sure theres a pub at the savile town marina and a walk along the canal there is always nice and peacefull. I met an old white guy who lived in savile town and always said nice things about the muslim neigbours were nice, peacefull and helped pay to renovate his house for free and would bring food over all the time and check up to see if he was ok and needed anything as he lived alone with no family.
That's our settled communitys though.

Saville town actually has a sizable indian gujrati speaking population. Most of the mosques there were established by them. My dad used to work in the cotton mills early 60s.
And Mullaco is a Gujarati Indian Muslim owned business as are many of the businesses there.

Interesting video highlighting the current state of Dewsbury. Whilst the whole town has a large Muslim population, its important to mention that Saville Town (the district focused upon in this video) is geographically separated from the rest of Dewsbury by a wide u-bend of the River Calder to the north, west and east & the canal to the south meaning that it's almost an 'island'. This geographic separation is one thing, another major factor is the central mosque is the European Headquarters of the Tablighi Jamaat movement. This is one of the biggest mosques in the UK with a capacity of 4,000.

Back in 1990 I was a student and lived on West Street, Saviletown facing the Rugby ground (if its still there) and the area was predominantly a Muslim area. Once you crossed over the River Calder from leaving Dewsbury all the way to Thornhill Lees. The smells of spices was overwelming where the whole place smelt of said spice. In 35 years since leaving I bet really nothing has changed its just like other northern towns in the UK, the closer you get to a town centre then the demographic changes. The same can be said about Oldham. However, Oldham segregated Pakistanis & Bangladesh communities to either side of the town centre. Asian communities settled here because of the trade in textiles Dewsbury and Batley where known for textile recycling, where most of the towns where mainly cotton towns, and they needed the in the (60's and 70's) workforce from the subcontinents ie India, Pakistan and Bangladesh because the English peoople of the town's didn't want to work doing these sorts of jobs. Saviletown was home to carpet makers and weavers. To me its understandable that the people who live in these areas wish to remain in these area's. Afterall, when the mills closed what was left ? 35 years ago the people who lived in this area of Saviletown where respectable to everybody who lived there however, is the younger generation which causes the problems that we see today?
Oh, the asian supermarket you visited at Thonhill Lees was once the smallest ASDA which closed in 1990 then became a Kwik Save until they closed. I know this because I worked there as a student. Not a lot changed there the checkouts are still in the same place :) Down stairs was a food hall and upstairs was non-food ie electrical and booze, across the ar park was the warehouse where I used to skive.
This is where we must stick all the boat people. We all love diversity…

Theres loads of suburbs in cities like that. Salisbury street suburb in sunderland is 90 percent ethnic minority, with bangladeshi coming in at 80 percent for the suburb. I live in southampton, my postcode is around 81 percent white but even in newtown nicholstown in southampton, pakistanis and indians dominate the area not as nuch as savile town but this is more common than people realise.

Muslims are super happy to integrate but not assimilate ecause we do have iur differences the root of most practical day to day differences boils down to alcohol consumption. We are happy to not have alcohol in our lives. This is very very difficult for non muslims to be understand when alcohol is a major part of the culture. Its obviously not the only difference but ia a huge difference culturally.
