I think Ghana has the best music in the world. I like Sarkodie, Bisa Kdei, Guru and Castro. I heard that Castro left this world after trying to save a woman who feel off a jet ski. Ghana people are amazing with a history of royalty and power.

Ghana's crime is not brutal .like a gun robbery , but it is very sophisticated and intelligent and there are so many thieves . Be careful with your money , because Ghana (and all Africa) is a minefield for your money.Especially if you buy a plot . Do not forget that Ghanaian hackers are on the list 10 top in the world and they are very intelligent . Better if you have family in Ghana.

I visited Ghana in 1979 to visit a friend, I was there for 2 weeks, I'm African American. The place I stayed I noticed local kids playing soccer with a busted tennis ball. I felt bad so I bought a new soccer ball for the kids and a pump for the ball, I gave the ball to a girl and the pump to a boy, the girl with the ball took the pump from the boy and ran off with the ball and the pump with the rest of the local kinds in tow. Typical woman, I have a picture of them on my face book page. This is one of my most cherished memories. Meda wo ase.

Just got back from our first two week long trip to Ghana and wanted to say thank you. This was the most accurate video on youtube I watched before going. I went there with very low expectations (i.e. don't get kidnapped or die from malaria...) and it turned out to be one of my best foreign travel experiences ever. Ghana people were so incredibly and genuinely nice! Like nowhere else in the world (Australia was close) have I encountered people so nice. We really had a great time with the exception of some extreme gastrointestinal issues... very glad my Dr. sent us with a "just in case" round of Cipro (strong antibiotic). I would go back... already kinda planning to!

About the shoes...it really depends on who's home your are going to..
And the umbrella situation, BRING it otherwise you will get wet!! People DO use umbrellas when its raining because they dont wanna get wet. So unless you want to get wet...... bring ur umbrellas along.

this was very interesting. what I learned from this was go to ghana if you like loud car honking, people who hate left hands, and people who bother you everytime you stop at a red light trying to sell you crap, or if you like to hear a church sermon while your trying to sleep in your hotel. maaaaan this sounds like a fabulous vacation get away

  • @MimiOnliine

+neo carl Hey Neo, if your left hand is injured and u can't use it, then don't go to Ghana and increase the injury by using your hand that is already injured please.
As i mention on the video, the use of right hand is important, but me as a Ghanaian myself, i've been there, & have mistaken my right hand to my left one, it happens, especially cos i was born abroad, i'm still getting use to that, you will not receive any backlash, i promise lol. It's the culture but it's also respectful to not strongly impose a culture maneer for someone who is not use to it. I'm sure some Ghanaians are aware of that.
I hope i've answered the comments about people asking persistently about the use of left hand, good that you ask but don't go to Ghana & put your whole attention on this, there are so many things to do in Ghana, you won't receive any backlash from using your left hand, especially if you're still not used to it.
    Much love- :)

This may be off topic but I've got to say this. Well done !! That's awesome. We dont see that much often. Born abroad but still you proudly refer to yourself as Ghanaian. I was born abroad and I do the same. But some Ghanaian kids born abroad always be like "my parents are from Ghana but I'm from UK..US.. etc. Nice video.

I am a Ghanaian and I have stayed in Ghana most of my life. Nice try but a few additions and deductions will suffice:
    1. the use of the right hand is not mandatory (that is if you are a foreigner). it just shows how polite you are.
    2. the use of an umbrella is not as scarce as you are implying. Ghanaians use umbrellas during the rain (that is if they have one). it is not embarrassing to use an umbrella at all.
    3. if you are white, a taxi driver may want to exploit you. Whatever fare you are charged should be bargained for and it is normal. If you are white, whittle the price you are charged to a third, and insist on paying that because you are likely to be charged three times more than the normal fare. If the driver does not concur, ignore him for another taxi or pretend to do so. He will accept your proposal and take you along.
    4. "Obroni" means a whiteman, not foreigner.
Finally, your accent sounds more Nigerian than Ghanaian, but your knowledge about Ghana is admirable.

Yes! There are a lot of foreigners now coming to visit Ghana and i believe locals are getting used to the fact that Ghana has become a touristic place, therefore it's not like locals are in awe or taking aback anytime a foreigner is seen, in fact the foreigner may even be like any other Ghanaian walking around :)
I believe you would have a great time if you go there, just go w/ an open mind :)

MimiOnliine the locals don't even starr at foreigners like they are from the moon .. the whites I saw were walking around like the local and the local minded their biz too .. that's how it should be . But what I found very very wird was : as I walked the street in Dansoman Ghana , in the night with a German man , a Ghana lady stopped him and told him to follow her home because she got a cup cake for him at home.. :) but that's just one little observation that did not matter. She meant it really good . But I did not like the forwardness .

lovelee black but left handed people still learn not to give or recieve things with their left hands .. but when the right hand is occupied you can use left hand with apology . In Nigeria , when you can't use the right hand for one reason or the other which the other person clearly sees , you simply apologise and while you go ahead and use the left . No body will kill you for using the left , but it's already a sign of disrespect! While some will tell you immedietly they are not happy with that act.

+neo carl I think you should be fine if you have an injury. If it's injured but you can still move it you can just sort of touch your left hand or elbow with your right hand as support (sounds complicated i know). if you can't move it then it's fine they'll understand

Ignorance flourishing rampantly in any country, is a problem for me to live there. I live in NYC, where highly intelligent people abound. Oh, we do have some very un-intelligent ones here, but for the most part, we have a very large percentage of highly intelligent people here. Ignorance holds a people back and slows down their mental growth. So true education is needed all over this world. Humanity still has a long, long, long ways to go.

+MimiOnliine Can you talk about crime and foreigners? Renting an apartment by the week or month? I'm guessing most foreigners are in Ghana to work in finance or construction or banking, but I never see them in random videos on youtube? Where are they spending their free time? I hope you make some more videos, even interviewing foreigners/1st time visitors! Lastly, is it hard to find Crab meat served in restaurants and is it normally served hot or cold? What about bacon?

Hello Mimi! I'm in the middle of the video but I just want to share this even before I forget. :) About hissing ... I'd suggest strangers don't do it 'cos it's considered rude by a number of people. If you want to draw someone's attention, you may use the words 'sister' or 'bro' (pronounced 'braa') - if the person looks younger than 30. Otherwise, you could say Ante (pronouncing the second syllable as you do in the word 'tin'), a word which metamorphosed from 'auntie' which is our cool way of saying 'aunt' :) ... or 'Boss' if the person seems to be in his/her 30s or older. :)

If you feel uncomfortable calling someone using the ''ss' sound, i'd advise you to just say'excuse me' whatever works best for you :) don't worry much about it, as long as you're polite :)

but left handed people still learn not to give or recieve things with their left hands .. but when the right hand is occupied you can use left hand with apology . In Nigeria , when you can't use the right hand for one reason or the other which the other person clearly sees , you simply apologise while you go ahead and use the left . No body will kill you for using the left , but it's already a sign of disrespect! While some will tell you immedietly they are not happy with that act.

Thank you for this video! Will you do a Part 2 video to answer the questions that are in the comment section? That would be helpful!
I am not sure if these questions are already addressed by you but one issue with travelers to Ghana is that the public restrooms are not the same as an American would expect. Toilet paper is also not often in the public restrooms, I have been told.
There are also cooked meats in the open air markets and that many American foreigners are not used to the smells that they encounter in the open spaces in Ghana.
In terms of food in Ghana, many American foreigners expect that the Ghanaian government would have inspection requirements of food and sanitation licenses of restaurants that are inspected to meet health codes - which is not true in Ghana. Will you comment about that?
Medical services for foreigners may not be readily available and cash payments are often expected in order to receive treatment and also the wait times can be much longer than one may expect who is from America. Will you speak on this also?
In terms of lodging available, what are the lowest price guest houses around Accra? Are the prices inflated when persons with American accents inquire about the rates?
You did not mention the dating customs in Ghana. Will you talk about the perceptions of non-Ghanaians within Ghana as it pertains to dating customs?
    Thank you.

    Hey!
i'm not sure about spanish mexican dishes, but one thing i notice the most on my last trip to Ghana in 2012 is the amount of chinese restaurants they were in Accra as i was driving around in taxi! So, there is definitely chinese and east asian restaurants, especially in many parts of Accra!
& I'm sure there may be some few restaurants that may serve Spanish food but i believe it's rare , but if there are a few, i think you're most likely to find them in the capital! (Maybe Kumasi too)

Obroni... Oh how familiar I am with that term. As a half Ghanaian, half Australian, it was a friendly reminder that I am a black man in Australia and a white man in Ghana, or to put it simply, a foreigner in every country. I never really had any problems with my left hand as such when I went.
