  • Wanting to add bass to some of my recent speaker builds, I decided a DIY Subwoofer build was going to be the way to go. I wanted something that would be contemporary and relatively cheap (under $100) to build. An 8” GRS Subwoofer was used and this speaker is ideal for a sealed unit. And to complete the looks I decided that I wanted it to be down firing. Built with connectivity in mind so that I could use it as a standalone sub or as part of a 2.1 system. (link below).

Very impressive, why do the final paint coats with a can and not your spray gun ?.

Thanks, It's a cheap old gun for primer but would need a better one for top coats and to be honest, as I vary the builds, buying car paint and thinners by the litre will be expensive and wasteful. The acrylic paints are only £3-4 GBP each and dry quickly (they are specialist grafitti paints)

Excellent work dude. Accurate and well assembled box too which was gratifying to see. I see you went Class D for the amp. Must admit I was tempted to go for class D but being cheap I bought a used "Rogers" 12 inch sub. Excellent case work but the rest was pretty bad and I got it cheap because the owner said it sounded "funny". Funny alright, bloody awful sounding. Made in China and no more related to Rogers than I am to the king of Norway.
Anyway it turned out that an inductor was loose. Bad solder joints, so I fixed that. At the same time I changed out the power transistors for something higher rated, and increased the reserve of the power caps. Probably no advantage to either. The Rogers 12 inch woofer was subbed for a better one from Element 14, or Farnel as you might know them in UK.
The box, like yours, I made from a sandwich of 18mm and 12mm mdf and it's screwed and glued together. Certainly not as accurate and well fitted as yours but I got there in the end. Down firing.
For anyone who might read this, I found a cheap alternative to the stuff which gives a rippled textured finish. Being cheap I mixed black paint with talc and black ink to bring back the black. Otherwise the paint turns grey. Using a stippled roller and two coats, finished with satin polyurethane clear, I ended up with a spectacular result. Might be interesting to anyone who wants to do a textured black finish on a budget. The real stuff is quite expensive..
Anyway, enough from me. I like what you've done dude. A great job, and I thought I'd share my experience....

@@DIY-AUDIO Thanks. Worked out well for an old skinflint like me. Looks the business and I'm extremely pleased with the way it sounds. Digs very deep and seems very tight. No droning or buzzing. Mind you I've got the controls turned way down. I'd rather have bass that's supposed to be there than it being over-emphasised which many folks seem to do, particularly in cars...

I know how to calculate impedance of each wooden box but I want to know if you connected tweet and mid ranged speakers in parallel o series. thanks

Hi Lars, unfortunately not. Size is listed (external size) and 18mm mdf. Self explanatory in the video (I hope). Parts in description and I'm really happy with the bass level for a smallish room

It certainly adds bass to my full range builds. Subtle more that masses of base that youd get from a bigger driver though!
