I switched from the Galaxy Fold 4 to the Pixel fold when I realized Samsung was not going to give us a wider cover screen on the fold 5. I was a big surface duo fan, but when Microsoft decided to let that phone die again I switched to the Samsung Fold. I am 1 week in on my pixel fold and Loving it.

Easy... pixel fold has a year old tensor 2 chip which is mid range at best. Fold 5 snap 8 gen 2..right there the samsung wins. Pixel has a better outer screen for sure and that 5x optical zoom is nice but thats all the pixel has on the fold. I think Google should have priced is much more conservativy..like the pixel 7 pro..i had no problem dropping $1500 on that (im in canada) my S23 ultra 1tb was $2500... the same difference in price or close to it should have been there between the pixel fold and fold 5

I find it legitimately hilarious that people pick the pixel for the front display ON A FOLDING PHONE 😭 this is why I bought the fold 5 the front display is incredible for calls and quick bits especially to use one handed then if I need to message or something I use the phone as intended and open it!
Honestly you're a joke if you buy a folding phone for a big front display.

You have to have to look at things on your own account. I use a stylus with my pixel phone every day. It may not be up to the grades of a SPN from Samsung but a stylus works on the outside screen and inside screen. I haven't got a couple of different apps that deals with notes. Even keep notes from Google works fantastically with it. Start doing your own research.

As a predominant Samsung user (I have used other phones) I played with the pixel fold and I will say it's a beautiful device I agree the front screen is awesome and I could buy it just for that with the added bonus of the big screen as and when needed. I had the fold 4 and liked it but it was the front screen in the end that turned me away. So now I have a huge (expensive decision to make in the next couple of days!!! 😬) 🤯 great comparison as usual Mark keep up the good work 😊 PS, I'll let you know my decision 😮😊

I think people can be to hard on the cover display of the fold 5. Yes it's a little thinner. But like anything you get used to it. It would be easier to hold. I had a couple of hours in store. And it ties well now. I still make mistakes on the 23 ultra and that's huge. If I had the 22 ultra still would definitely upgrade. Not sure if I should do it now I have the 23 ultra

@kimbridge5592 Same here, I feel a lot of people have their minds made up on the outer screen, I had the Fold 4, traded it for the Fold 5, and I traded my s23 ultra for the Fold 4, and since I kind of prefer the outer screen of the fold 5, because of the one-handed usability of that screen and like you rightfully said I still was making typing mistakes on the screen of my s23 ultra, but I prefer to use my phone one-handed, that's why I also use swipe type, I love the z fold because it is a more refined and polished phone, I choose peace of mind over anything

Excellent summary and clear comparisons between these two excellent folding phones!
Hope you get to try the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, as more competition is better!
My choice, and what I'm using now to type this comment, is based of my experiences.
Being a part of the Samsung ecosystem, from way back to the mobile Microsoft OS and stylus based Samsung Omnia SGH-i900, to the Note II & 3, S6 Edge, S7 Edge, S10+, and S21 Ultra, I've familriased myself with the multifunctional ethos and refinement that Samsung offers.
So, I chose to outright purchase the fifth generation of Samsung folding tech, Galaxy Z Fold5, and I'm immensely enjoying doing what I do (multitasking) and watching content on the bigger screen (like your video now!), whilst relegating other simple tasks to the slim front screen (triage notifications or perform simple web searches).
I'm also an advent stylus user, and looking back at all of my phones, including the Z Fold5, I'm on my fifth stylus-based smartphone!
To me, Samsung stands alone in regards to their in-built features for productivity, efficency, and entertainment prowess.
That's not a slight to other manufacturers, but Samsung have been improving their internal software tech since the SGH-i900 (first use of Touchwiz, but over Microsoft OS!) and, in my opinion, Note 1. I'm also glad Samsung ditched the older Touchwiz for One UI in 2019 via the debut of the S10 and Note 10 series.
I'm glad other companies compete hardware and software wise, as this forces everyone to continuously improve. However, as much as hardware specs gets all the limelight, I think software sometimes takes a back seat, despite this being the core area most of us use when we use smartphones as daily drivers.
This core area is why I considered the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold way back in 2019, but I couldn't justify the myriad core issues it had.
Up until 2021, when the Z Fold3 was released, I was still unsure, but glad that it (and both later Z Fold4 and Z Fold5), had stylus support. Though I didn't get the Z Fold3, I did pick up from that year the S Pen Pro, to use with my 2021 S21 Ultra alongside the non-Bluetooth S Pen for S21 Ultra. My hope was to have the S Pen Pro ready for the Z Fold4.
Unfortunately, I was still unsatisfied with the 2022 release of the Z Fold4.
The major issues I had with all the four folding phones was a mix of hardware camera specs and hinge gap design. I disliked these.
However, this year, I made a realisation that, though I do take pics, especially in RAW format and edit in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, entirely on my Samsung phones, that this is now my least used activity.
I multitask or stream content over 90% of the time on my phone, especially the S21 Ultra and with both S Pen's.
When the Z Fold5 was released, even with almost no camera change to Z Fold4 and incremental updates, the far more powerful processor and new hinge (no gap) design won me over. As my first folding phone, I get five years of refinement and folding software features into one package, and do more of what I love.
I cannot even explain the sheer joy and ease in using the Z Fold5, advancing all of my previous, now second-nature, experiences I have had using Samsung phone software features.
No, the Z Fold5 is not perfect, but vs competitors such as Google Pixel Fold and Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the Z Fold5 is perfect for me! 😊
For me, the Z Fold5 is the production-ready version of the prototype Z Fold's 1 - 4; the most polished version.
Yet, I do not think Samsung should iterate again, Z Fold6 ought to be released with a new design and new features, especially integrated S Pen with Bluetooth, and have the same camera modules as the upcoming S24 flagship.

I would love to get the pixel fold but it being first Gen and I've seen a few people already having inner screen issues, I'll wait until next year. The z fold series has an unusable outer screen for typing, and nearly impossible to type on the inner screen on the go. That's a hard pass for me. I have the z flip 5. Had the z fold 3 and flip 3 and saw people having issues on the flip... Couldnt deal with the typing on the fold so I sold both and got an s23 ultra. I'm using the flip 5 as my daily and loving it so far. The prices of both folds doesn't bother me. I get mine on payments and they are 40 to 50 bucks a month usd. But yeah... The fold 5 is a pass for me. I just wish samsung would put out something closer to the form of the pixel fold. Ive been with samsung for over a decade and hate trying to retrain myself on operating systems lol

I mainly use an iPhone 14 Pro Max and have been interested in folding phones for some time now. I bought a Microsoft Surface Duo phone, the hardware was fantastic, but everything else was a below-par experience. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. It's an excellent idea; the software and hardware are both excellent. The only issue is it's not an iPhone; I can not access all my day to day documents; I only use it for multi-tasking when I don't want to carry my laptop or iPad Pro with me. There is little chance that Apple will release a foldable phone anytime soon. Their first folding tech is likely an iPad and this is far more sensible than 8-inch foldable phones as we can get aspect ratios that we want and have a much larger inner display to do more on.
Sadly, Apple recently tested Samsung displays and found their quality not there yet and long term they do not pass Apple's strict lifespans. So, Samsung were told to improve them. I suspect 2026/7 at the earliest for a folding iPad and later still for an iPhone Fold assuming that this segment grows enough for Apple to make it pay.

I have tried the Samsung Pixel Pro 8, BUT, I know it's not a Fold but I just cannot get to grips with all the faff on the screen and everything that comes up every time I try to do anything. At least the Samsung phones are straight forward I think. Although I like the size of the Pixel Fold, I think I have to get the Samsung Fold. I thought of waiting until the new Samsung Fold 6 comes out hopefully this month, but it is not going to be much bigger and the crease is not any better apparently. Oh well, decision made 😊

If the folds were as reliable as any normal phone we would all use them(except maybe women or men with small hands? ), assuning the prices were close, say a $200 premium. I bought a fold 3 used that looked brand new for $479 and told myself "if it lasts 2+ years i cannot go back to non folding" but sadly its got a line through middle as i type this at 1.5 years of use. Being used i wasn't sure about care+ and the $250 minimum for replacement on damaged inner screens meant it wasnt going to save me much if any after the $12 a month. I did drop it A LOT and even woke up laying on it opened up(freaked me out the first 20 times),😂so it wasnt babied. I am now looking at a fold 5, but i think the screen not having a close gap on the 5 is worse for reliability since its just a sharper corner/crease when closed. I really like the pixels front screen ratio(like you i wish they made all phones at 6.8" with this ratio). I also feel like folding the screen long ways makes more sense as the crease itself is shorter(why samsung put the crease on longest axis?), and with the thicker bezel possibly more durable? My screen seems to flicker when i touch the bottom crease area.

My carrier gave me $1,000 trade in value on my three year old Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Samsung only offered me $400 for a trade in. I do love my Z Fold 5. I have seen several battery tests and every one finds the Samsung phone to have better battery life, usually way better! Not sure why you say otherwise unless you tested both? I don't have the Pixel so I can't say. But the battery life of the Z Fold 5 is way better than the Note 20 Ultra and there are a lot of complaints about the Pixel chip overheating and not allowing max graphics on newer games. In my case, I'm firmly entrenched in the Samsung ecosystem so the Z Fold was the only foldable worth consideration but I can see why some people want a larger, more square front screen, just not me with my tiny Trump hands.

I have a 14 pro max and pixel fold. I had the fold 4 and as much as I love and enjoy Samsung I didn't like my inability to use the front screen comfortably. This is personal preference as the phone in comparison to the pixel is more polished and optimized for the folding screen market. I very much enjoy the pixel fold. I use both screens pretty equally which is nice for daily use. Wish it had some of the bells and whistles like Samsung but considering Apple can be limiting it doesn't bother me that the pixel isn't as customizable. I just changed launchers so it's pretty similar to what I'm used to from Samsung. You'd enjoy either foldable but it's honestly preference on what you care most about. Usability while folded was a big draw for me so I got the pixel. I feel like if I recommended a first time foldable to anyone it would be Samsung. Especially for the price.

Most comparisons I’ve seen mention how the Pixel Fold doesn’t stretch apps to fit the large screen like the Samsung Folds do, which can be a huge annoyance for many people. It’s been said that Google is doing this to force app devs to update their apps rather than doing it for them but it’s definitely harms the experience when a bunch of apps only show a skinny portion of the large screen.

Battery life is NOT the same…. The pixel is pretty awful at that metric.

@MarkEllisReviews yes, pixel since June 27th Z-Fold 5 since August 7th. The pixel never lasts more than 4.5 hours, Z-fold 5 lasts 7 hours with the same usage

@MarkEllisReviews that's everyone's favorite reply... it's not defective, it doesn't have good battery life.

I find it legitimately hilarious that people pick the pixel for the front display ON A FOLDING PHONE 😭 this is why I bought the fold 5 the front display is incredible for calls and quick bits especially to use one handed then if I need to message or something I use the phone as intended and open it!
Honestly you're a joke if you buy a folding phone for a big front display

@@MarkEllisReviews Sorry I'm not following your mad logic just seems legitimately insane to have a big front display on a folding phone at that point don't buy the fold 🤣
Also not that I have to prove myself to you I get outside and I've seen a good majority of the world I personally find it severely overrated.

@@raisedservices9540 right, I’m with you now. So you like the Pixel Fold but you’re not a fan of its users. Excellent. Thanks for clarifying and making note of that publicly for the world to see. Have a great day!

I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, mini iPad and an older iPad Pro with keyboard. I use these for both home and work. Apple Notes transformed the way I work, so I will remain with Apple until retirement, if that ever comes. However, should Apple finally reward us with a foldable that works with some form of the Apple pencil, I will likely go that way. In the meantime, both the Samsung and Google foldables look like works in progress.
