I saw him perform the anthem on a Sunday early in the 1984 baseball season; he and his band performed the anthem at the Texas vs NY Yankees game as it aired on Channel 11 WPIX.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I don’t think he was that good let’s be real here he has extraordinary range and was revolutionary for his time but his tone isn’t even comparable to current trumpet players his tone isn’t as good as Arturo Sandoval nor is it as good as James Morrison and Arturo who are hitting in the same register as him is he one of the greats yes but saying there won’t ever be a better trumpet player than him or like him is nothing but nostalgia speaking

Because of Maynard Ferguson, there are thousands of trumpet players today who play in the extreme high register. Many do it better than he did. But he was a pioneer. Sort of, like the first test piolts to break the sound barrier, someone had to lead the way. Maynard did it with class and a flair that no one else did. He inspired many trumpet players and still does.

He has been copied by many Trumpet Players who can play as high as him but NONE as unique in style, phrasing, and Sound so unique that you know it's Maynard ! That will Always be !

Those watching the game got a rare treat. He almost made the game itself insignificant
    Note the man's CONFIDENCE!
Even with his strength the star spangled banner is not an easy piece to take up the octave. And in 1991 he was 63 years old. Amazing feat!

Maynard at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh! When I was 16, probably in 1972, I played in a jazz band at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena for a Duquesne University basketball game. I always thought that was pretty cool. Now, after seeing this, I am not worthy! Gotta love Maynard! Thank you for posting.

I don't get this whole Arturo Sandoval competition thing. I have been a longtime fan of Arturo and Maynard. This performance was a different construct between playing in a gym and playing outside. Ok, so Arturo solo it. If they wanted Maynard to solo it he would have solo it. Maynard has played the national anthem on many other occasions that sadly did not make it to youtube, so this is not a rare thing. Both are great players. Trying to compare Arturo Sandoval and Maynard Ferguson does nothing because honestly nobody really cares. This reminds me of the whole Miles Davis argument that was occurring in the late 90's early 2000's.

I enjoy them both too but to be honest I grow tired of Arturos high range style pretty fast. He seems to gravitate to much of the same set of licks and it becomes very predictable. I feel the same way about Jon Faddis. I actually really enjoy Jon Faddis solos in the low and middle registers. He demonstrates a lot of creativity. Al Hirt i would say runs circles around Artuo in so many ways when it comes to low and mid range articulation and then bringing his style into the upper registers of the horn. His Begin the Beginue live version here on youtube is surreal. I was crazy about Arturo for so many years but as I listened more it is like his playing lacks soul.
