On the tenth-year anniversary of the first DVD of Maynard Ferguson’s “Tales from the Road,” there has recently been lots of interest in a second run of DVD’s. For those maybe not familiar, the video compilation is a sequence of videos from my personal and private library of road footage, backstage, on stage, rehearsals, bus scenes, airport antics, etc. from my touring years with the Maynard Fer...

🎺 Thank You a Zillion Times... So Absolutely Incredible 🎺🔥🌠
Wow....
I've always loved that song especially the album version
Love the Michael breckerish sax
Awesome my idol growing up saw him many times as a young boy
Thank you for posting this!
A true legend!
I saw him that year he sounded phenomenal right up to his death i miss him so much but thankfully his music will live on and continue to inspire musicians of all ages
Maynard has a sound that I have not heard anyone else copy. Yes, people can play higher and with “better” tone, but there’s something about the way that Maynard plays that’s just… different. It’s so special, and I love it.
Sounds like shit
I want a copy of this on dvd…..may i buy one from you? Where may I order a copy???? - Leo
Guess who first chair is in Heaven????
Has never be equaled.
Beyond Wonderful!..Vaughn 12:43 🎺
"Stan Kenton made me a star" 🎶
Ed do you have film when Maynard ferguson play in Puerto Rico at Bellas Artes alternate with Îrakere of Cuba
Maynard became my idol in 6th grade. A senior I got lessons from made me some tapes and I was off and running. In 1989-90 He came to a high school in Beverly Massachusetts and I went to the concert and after the finale "Gonna Fly Now" he walked into the seats and I shook his hand. I was 14 or 15 and it was a great night! RIP Maynard 🙏. You'll always be my idol!
Good for you. Same here, during "Hey Jude" 1991, Handshake in Hildesheim/Germany, Community Theatre ❤ forever.
So far ahead of it's time!
The early years. Ha! I was playing Maynard's music in the mid 70's. By myself before and In High School. On Lead Trumpet, (My nick name was screech). I played the lead to his version of Gonna Fly Now in 1978 at a Saints game with the Nichols State University Marching band. One of the best moments of my life. Besides opening up for Pat Travers a few years ago here in San Antonio.
Wow. Such an influence on me as a Trumpet player. Gone too soon. He’d be 97 if he was alive today. I’m pretty sure he in doc Severinsen were the same age.
OMG! OMG! OMG! There is so much to say...Stan, thank you for the style that DCI embraced in the 70's and 80's. DCI Sopranist of that era wish they could come close to Maynard;IN 19 freakin 50!!! Stan, I also want to thank you for a little ditty a few years later, La Suerta de los Tontos. You made the horn acceptable in jazz.
I have seen MF more than any recording artist live. More than rock bands. I have waited a long time to view this presentation. MF just nailed it for his debut. The clip and created camera scenes pretty darn good for early aired television. Nice to see this Will be around for future horn enthusiasts. Remember the great list and beginnings of these artist .
Ok, heres my Maynard Ferfuson story.. Me and my jazz mates in high school went and saw him and his big band in Kansas City in 1991. Roger Ingram was his lead trumpet player at the time. Maynard was great as usual, but Roger stole the show and was amazing! After the show we got Maynard Ferguson souvenir hats for Maynard to sign, but he never came out! Roger Ingram did though and everyone wanted his autograph anyway! I heard a rumor years later that Maynard fired Roger because he out performed him. Who knows if that's true or not but maybe thats why Maynard never came back out.
The Boss... 🎺
This doesn’t suck.
Hello Ed and thank you so much for an outstanding video! The performances are truly breathtaking. What is the last tune that plays underneath your written words? It’s just an incredible live performance, was it ever recorded? Thanks again!
Maynard tenía 22 años, denoto que el nació con ese don en los agudos con la 🎺, por supuesto lo fue perfeccionando pero es algo natural y casi único.
El sonido más explosivo 🧨 Maynard eres el mejor❤
Leonard Feather, music critic for the LA Times, once wrote the Buddy Rich Band was a Ferrari and the MF Band was a 1959 Cadillac Convertible. The best descriptions of both ever written.
I was at this concert as usual. Somehow, someway, live changes are absolutely unreal!
Looking to see if anyone can ID the trumpet? By the valve stems and water keys, it sure looks like a Selmer Paris. Never knew MF to play Selmer, but maybe he did at this early date?
Great audio! RIP Maynard.
I saw him perform the anthem on a Sunday early in the 1984 baseball season; he and his band performed the anthem at the Texas vs NY Yankees game as it aired on Channel 11 WPIX.
at 1:12:08 the location is Grand Rapids, MN at the Myles Rief Center not Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was in 10th grade for this concert and it was a huge concert for the area. The HS Band sold tickets and was used as a band booster. I remember very well the Band Booster provided food and washed Maynards suits for him and the next morning the Band Director had to take the band to fly out in school vans because it was so cold Maynards bus wouldn't start.
The Boss!
Beautifully done Ed! MF was our International Treasure Vaughn 🎺
Thanks for these memories Ed. Enjoyed your earlier video of the band. As a 65 year fan back to the Emarcy and Roulette days, Maynard's music has been in my life more than any other performer's. Live performances for me go back to Birdland in '61 to his first concert on returning from England, in Town Hall, NYC and a concert in 2006 in upstate NY. In between, I was in Albany when you got rained out in the 90's in the spring of the year and missed out on that show.
Just love it WOW 5 years love you all blessings to all
Love it
Maynard Looks like a Force Ghost in this video...and it's awesome.
I just might have audio from Anne Arundel Community College sometime in the 80's I think. I have a tape that says "erase this and die". I think its him. I've got to find a player and see.
man, thank you for this. wow. Maynard heaven. omg listening to this, I'm almost in tears. Man what a powerhouse. I remember a time seeing him hear in Baltimore , he made part of my ear resonate and I thought my head was gonna split open.
Because of Maynard Ferguson, there are thousands of trumpet players today who play in the extreme high register. Many do it better than he did. But he was a pioneer. Sort of, like the first test piolts to break the sound barrier, someone had to lead the way. Maynard did it with class and a flair that no one else did. He inspired many trumpet players and still does.
He has been copied by many Trumpet Players who can play as high as him but NONE as unique in style, phrasing, and Sound so unique that you know it's Maynard ! That will Always be !
Love you Ed!
The man!
WOW
Danke schön 😊Thank you Ed for this wonderful Video. Saw many Gigs in Germany and at Ronny Scotts in London.
Que maravilla, que dominio. Sobre todo los trompetas.
What an amazing talent. Trumpet players in the 1950s had to be shitting their pants listening to Maynard. Much like they were listening to Clifford Brown. Either one would have made me put the trumpet in its case in those days.
Thank you so much for this. So great to have the memories kept alive.
