Same Name, Different Game: Double Dragon II Revisited

- Just like last year, I'm starting 2019 with another look at a Double Dragon game I've looked at before. This time, we're investigating the differences between and history of Double Dragon II: The Revenge in the arcade and on the SEGA Mega Drive.
Arcade footage captured from a US Nintendo Switch outputting HDMI, Genesis/Mega Drive footage captured using a US JVC X'Eye outputting RGB SCART to a Framemeister, 360 footage captured from a US 360 outputting HDMI.

Folks have been asking why DD2 on NES and PC Engine CD aren't talked about more. I've already covered them! Back in 2012, if you want to see: ruclips.net/video/j5ieryh1cs0/видео.html
Look at all them fuckin games? You have got nuff(loads). Big shouts to you.
Also, I used to love off double dragon on the N.E.S and arcade.
@@markbennett2960 I think NES Double Dragon.gets a bit of a bad rap for not having two-player. The game still plays fine.
@@SameNameDifferentGame I love the two player V.S mode in nes double dragon. Also great video as always.
Did you know that Abore's sprites are acttualy based of andre the giant's in WWF Superstars. Kouji Ogata has confirmed this on his twitter page. Just wanted to share this fact.
"Bolo" and "O'Hara"? Kishimoto was obviously an Enter The Dragon fan :D
For sure.
There is a poster of the big boss in the china town stage in Double Dragon advance. Also DD advance could possibly be the best DD game.
Dude, your channel is really underrated and you deserve way more subscribers! Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
That big dude wearing the red pants in the arcade version was clearly used as a basis for Andre the Giant in Technos' WWF Superstars, which I played a ton. There's clear graphical similarity and shared animations. It jumped right out at me when I first saw it.
There definitely is!
ravagingwolverine 6 months before me... damn and I thought I knew alot about Technos. really good eye mate.
The Double Dragon series is one of my favorite beat em up series ever
It's a good one!
Over 7k views in 3 days! Nice Joe. Been watching for a long time and glad to see you getting the attention you deserve mate. Well done 😀
Bonkers, right?! And thanks for the support!
The Arcade Archives port of Double Dragon 2 is also available on PS4, so people without a Switch do have another option.
Yeah, I should have mentioned that.
Yep I got it
Hands down absolutely positively the best game of all time! I've literally bought consoles just to play different versions of this game... the latest being Pandora's Box S6. The best in my opinion being Double Dragon advance!
DD Advance is so good! Thanks for watching!
Advanced is the best port. These days, I think you can just download the arcade version on the PS4, though.
I keep finding these gems on a daily basis it seems. You’ve gotten over 400 new subs recently dude....that’s awesome!! Way to go my man.
Haha, I think you already commented on this one when it was new, but I'll take the additional view! And, yeah, this video brought a ton of new subs to the account. Thanks algorithm, I guess!

Seems you have the SPIRIT of a WOLF...
It may seem so. Can’t never stop playing those games ever!!!!
Good job with the new theme music, I really like it!
I always like learning new things about the industry in these videos -- it was a bit of a shock to hear how much of a mystery this one was!
Great video. I dugg the commercials in the middle. Great touch.

Hey great video man!! 1st time watcher. I appreciate the old school game videos your doing. Thank you!! 🍻
Thanks for watching, glad you're digging what I'm doing!
Love watching all of your videos dude, keep up the awesome episodes.
Thank you!
I had successfully forgotten about Wander of the Dragon until you brought it up again.
Damn. Sorry about that.
Just discovered the channel 👊 quality stuff buddy. Subbed
Awesome! Glad to have you!
Totally underrated channel.. love everything you do thanks!!
at a convention, I asked Kishimoto why Marian had to die in the sequel and he told me "Marian doesn't die in DD1, she is still alive. DD2 is not a sequel as is mostly a "remake" where you fight your own hatred that destroys everything. Technos figured if they kill Marian, then the Dragon brothers will go on more adventures . Every Double Dragon is a story contained in itself because he didn't think people would want more "dragon" games. The case of Kunio-kun that has almost 12 games.
Thanks for watching!
"I'll fucking punch you in the face until my fist bleeds" will forever ring in my head when I play Double Dragon or watch gameplay of it.
Digging that new theme!
Yay!
Awesome video , always will have a soft spot for double dragon

Awww wow new intro!!!! LOVE IT
Maybe you saw me moaning on a previous video
New theme tune is pretty damn rad. I like it.
Man the sprites on Double Dragon 2 look like what would happen if you asked a near sighted person to recreate them from memory. They're all off in weird ways. Glad you remembered Wander of the Dragons. People must be warned.
I'm really happy with it! Dya did good work.
And yeah, something about the smaller sprites in the port is just off.

It's possible!
It's a shame 2019 and Technōs Japan has not remade double dragon 1 and 2 arcade versions with zero slow down 100% identical gameplay and graphics.
This is a legit complaint. I honestly think that would have been a great feature for Hamster to put in the Arcade Archives versions.

@@Invidente7 Right?
@@SameNameDifferentGame Rage of Dragons was literally a fanfic neo geo version of "double dragon 2"
@@catlike4456 Yeah, pretty much.
Double dragon 2 was one of my favourite arcade games of all time, the mega drive port was completely tragic especially as the system is more than capable of producing a near arcade perfect rendition of the game, the music tbh wasn't too bad
Right? The system has the horsepower to do the game justice.
@@SameNameDifferentGame yeah definitely, the game was clearly given to the wrong developers whoever they were. Sega themselves did a great job with final fight cd maybe they should've ported it
@@malant2719 If Sega had done it internally, it would have been aces. They practically could do no wrong in 1991.
It's bizarre Double Dragon 1 and 3 had Western releases, but not 2. Come to think of it, did DD1 come out in Japan? As that was Accolade with their weird card boxes for packaging.
1 was not just published by Accolade, but ported by a western dev! I don't think it came out in Japan.

Very enjoyable episode, and a good thing to wake up to on my birthday, too! DD2 in the arcade did always seem like a weird reskin of DD1, so I stick to the Famicom version for that entry, but I didn't know much about the Genesis version until now.
And oh boy... The DD Arcade collection. I'm looking forward to that episode. Played it on iOS and it feels just... Well, very weird. I can't beat the final stage of DD2 on it yet I beat DD1/DD3 with no issues
Happy birthday, glad you enjoyed the episode!
Great video like always. Love your content and always look forward to a new Same Name, Different Game. Looking forward to the new series/video.
Thanks!
Loved this game growing up . Also enjoyed Final fight and Captain comando to
Love a good brawler!
Nice work, Joseph. As always!
One of my enduring favorites of ALL time. Love this game.
Hell yeah!
The arcade versions' music is great. The ending theme is beautiful with its bittersweet tone (though the NES versions' happier tone works well, too), and the Doppelganger Intro Theme/Main Theme is very effective with its high-octane nightmare fuel (the NES version is also good, too, given the hardware limitations).
Yeah, I dig both the arcade and NES soundtracks.
Hi Joe! This video is awesome! And I love your channel! Did you ever do a video on Double Dragon III? I remember as a kid the Famicom verison was awesome! But then when I revisited it as an adult on the NES, it did not play as well as I remember. It was too hard and frustrating, but maybe because I've lost interest and patience to play for hours on end as an adult! And comparing it to the arcade version it was a totally different game!
Glad you like it! And, yeah, DD2 on the NES can be tough (especially the platforming nonsense towards the end), but I still find it better than the arcade, even if it is harder.
I meant DD3. Have you done a video on DD3 yet? I couldn't find it posted on your channel.

Yea! Let’s talk more double dragon!

Glad you dug it!
Moar Double Dragon!
I don't have any of the receipts. I remember the first time I defeated the game it was back in the 80's. I took weeks, and when I finally beat it. I showed a friend off coarse I had the game only for like a week back than when I had finally beat it. I showed an friend in the hood. Wee played it together, and beat it again. I told my friend I was hungry, and asked him if he wanted to go to a neighborhood circle K. He said no and wanted to go home. So I went to the store to get a chilli dog, and some drink. When I had return home, the old friend was not a friend any more. The dude broke into my window, and stole my game. That's how I remember Double Dragon so good. I only had that game for only a week. I was mad, but I finally got over it...........................not really, I'm still piping mad!
Man, I really thought that was going to be a feel-good story... but, hey, Double Dragon! And a chili dog!
@@SameNameDifferentGame I still love the game, and I have multiple different copies now from every different system to.

The PC Engine version of Double Dragon II: The Revenge is the ultimate version,
but the NES version is more brutal and has added a lot to the game.
I like the PC Engine, but I honestly don't think it plays as well as the NES. The soundtrack is also weird.

If you want to play Double Dragon 1 & 2 download it on ps4. It's the exact copy of the arcade if not indenticle.
The PS4 and Switch versions are basically identical, but the Switch version of DD2 has one extra thing. I talk about it in my next video, coming later this week!
I always asked myself if the goons in this sequel were the same from the original like william, ropper and linda, or brand new baddies with different names.
I think they're the same.
Well if that's the case then whatever roper did to look like a one eyed chuck norris work.
@@jonathanalvarez2909 Hahahaha, true!
Very informative video. Funny that I took a 360 on the Arcade soundtrack. DD1 has one of the best soundtracks ever, so when I heard DD2 I said "WTH is this?" But now it's right up there and I even listen to it more than DD1. The only flaw is the low volume and mono hardware makes it annoying for headphones. I don't think the Mega Drive's version is too-too bad.
Kazunaka Yamane is very talented. Return of Double Dragon's soundtrack is just as good too.
I still like the first game's soundtrack more, but they're all pretty good.
Have you heard of the Double Dragon version for the Zeebo video game? It is worth taking a look!
I have! Others have mentioned it, but I've never played it.
Wow I forgot how bad those tiger handheld were.
They're bad!
Finally got around to finishing this full episode I think I'm all caught up.
The tiger electronic commercial was hilarious I laughed on how they make it look so badass . Kids these days don't have the patience like we did to play those tiger electronic games. Lol if you didn't have a Gameboy you had a tiger it was the kind of thing you would have your grandparents get you when you went to the store
Kids back then didn't have the patience for Tiger games! But you're definitely right about the grandparents thing. I think that was because they didn't have to worry about knowing if you had the system to play it on or not, because they were self-contained!
2:15 Indeed one of the most influential games of all time, i wonder which one is the #1.
Super Mario Bros or DOOM in my opinion, they changed the whole gaming history forever.
DOOM is a very important game, but I think SMB is maybe more influential? I don't know, it's very hard to quantify things like that. Is Spacewar! the most influential? Pong? Galaxian? It's really hard to say.
Love your videos ^^ keep making them!
You keep watching them, and I'll keep making them!
Love the double dragon trilogy version of dd2 with the arranged soundtrack
To each their own, but I think it's a very bad version of that soundtrack.
I LOVE arcade DD & DD2!! It was a very happy day when MAME supported them after playing the inferior console and computer versions. I didn’t like DD3 too much.
DD3 in the arcade is pretty bad, yeah. Not developed internally at Technos and it shows.
My favorite game of all time🐲🐉
It's a good one!
Totally forgot there was a rom floating around for Double Dragon 2 and glad I did. I'll stick with the NES version or just MAME it. PC Engine cd version has cool cinemas. Yep that XBLA version was atrocious. After trying to demo I avoided it like the plague.
The zeebo version of the original DD should get more love. looking forward to the next ep. Also new intro music is pretty rad.
I've heard a lot about this Zeebo version of DD1, but there doesn't seem to be a good way to actually play it now. Glad you dig the new themesong!

@@Cyberpunknut Interesting. Thanks for the tip!

The thing I like the best of the genesis port of DD2, is the music. I would even say it sounds better than the arcade version. However, sounds and everything else is weaker (lol, crunchy doritos).
This seems to be a pretty popular feeling. I honestly think the music on that port is just ok, but maybe my revulsion at the sound effects colored that.
DAMN! You’re killing me! You sneaky bastard!!! Lol Good work brother. Watching it now!! What about the “next Double Dragon IV on the Switch? Any thoughts?
DD4 was... a big disappointment. I really wanted to like it, but it's pretty bad. And the PS4 version had really weird tech issues that seem like they shouldn't exist. Like... why is there so much screen-tearing in a game like this? No bueno.
@Nicholas Rumleskie I'm fine with forgetting the bad games, but I dislike DD4 more than DD3! (Well, maybe not arcade DD3, but NES DD3, for sure.)
On the Stick - Wow, it’s that bad huh? I had heard about the PS4 issues and heard the Switch version fixed them but that it still wasn’t very good. I usually still like games/movies that are spiked by the critics but if you say it sucks then I’m going to have to stay away...I just have that itch to see it. Of course, I had that itch to see Beverly Hills Cop 3....I was never the same again!!! Lol
@@reagandow850 I'm a pretty big DD fan and I really felt like it just didn't stack up. It felt rushed, honestly.
@Nicholas Rumleskie I just feel like there's only so much time to dedicate to enjoying games and dwelling on the bad ones isn't a good use of that time. I think a dev can certainly learn from bad games, but that doesn't mean they have to be canonized. Like, what would Sonic Mania gain by acknowledging Sonic '06?
I wish that the company would release Double Dragon 3 the Resilient stones on the switch And Double Dragon return
I mean, honestly, it would be nice to have the complete trilogy, but DD3 in the arcade is pretty rough. Technos farmed development out and the resulting game isn't a patch on DD1 or DD2.
Double dragon II on NES is hands down my favorite 💯
I have the game for the NES. Nice game to play.
The NES version is pretty great!
I really like mega drive DD 2 no joke. It's bad, it's got a missing enemy (Jeff) and it slows down to a crawl but there's something about it that I like. That spin kick (Ryubiranpu kyaku that's it's actual name in japanese) sound tho.
Hahaha, is it the music that's the something about it you like? A lot of people in these comments have said I'm totally wrong about the music.
On the Stick while the music is good it's nothing on Kazunaka Yamane's original soundtrack I think it's the lag heavy gameplay that I enjoy most, it's very charming. Oh and the game can crash on any point if it lags to much.
Bolo and O'Hara are references from Enter the Dragon 🤘🏼

I loved the first Double Dragon (still do) any version. I owned the first game for both the Nes and Sega Master System when they were new because of how different they were. I liked and owned the second title for the NES but as I have grown older, I no longer like it.
Honestly, of the 8-bit versions, NES DD2 is my favorite, but it does get ridiculous at the end.
Double dragon IV is great but it's too short and leaves a much desired continuation 💯
Sadly I played through and beat Wander of the Dragons. You didn't even scratch the surface on how broken that game is. I wound up beating Burnov in the first stage by abusing the continue mechanic where you deal a TON of damage to anyone near you.

Double dragon 2 for Genesis wasn't too bad, if you compare the NES
Nah, the NES version is way better than Genesis.
And then you played both and changed your mind.
Double Dragon 2 for the Mega Drive was one I've always wanted just because it is rare & hard to come by. While the game play isn't the best, I still like it better than the port of Double Dragon 1 for the Sega Genesis. I'm surprise that you didn't mention the way enemies sounded when they die. It almost sounds as if they are puking.
I really don't share your opinion on the Mega Drive version's soundtrack. I think it stacked up favorably when you did the side-by-side comparison, though I haven't played the game myself to determine whether that's true for the rest of the soundtrack. Aside from that, I'm really curious how they screwed up the Mega Drive version so badly. As far as hardware goes, the Mega Drive was a slightly stripped-down Sega System 16, which means it should be able to handle DDII almost perfectly. Also, why the hell is it so dark? Did they have the brightness levels up on their monitors when developing the game? It's no wonder there's a scarcity of information about it, that's a port even the developers themselves probably wanted to forget.
I mean... the music isn't awful, but I kind of expected more. And the sound effects are brutal. As for the overall quality? I can only speculate that Quest or whoever didn't get enough time with it, because Palsoft put a rush on it. And similarly, no clue why it's so dark, I thought it might be my setup, but when I looked at the Turtles and DD1 footage I grabbed, no issues there. I guess they just thought it should be dark and grimy looking?
@@SameNameDifferentGame Yeah when you put the footage of Hyperstone Heist on there, my mind was blown. lol It's so smooth compared to this mess that it looks like a total masterpiece.

@@zanegandini5350 Crazy, right? And glad you dig the new song and the idea of the new show!
Given that it was Iwata doing the port of the soundtrack and that he was using Sakimoto's sound drivers, I almost think it would've been better if he went rogue and did his own completely original soundtrack. But yeah, I would agree that Iwata's interpretation of the arcade OST was rock solid on this port.
@@barny15 That would have been interesting.

Interesting. ROM hack or a standalone game?
On the Stick stand alone. open bor. made by a guy called magggas. just do a search on yt for ddr. takes the best aspects of the arcade games and it is great.
@@one7decimal2eight Cool.
On the Stick here's a way for me to describe it...imagine dd1 and dd2 arcade sprites and levels. but you can punch and kick like dd1. you can back kick like dd2. hurricane kick is there. and you can sit on an enemy and punch them in the face like the nes dd. you can also jump on their rib cages like dd3. you can now run like dd3. and punch and kick and spin kick while running. you can jump off a wall and come back with a kick like dd3 for the nes. and you can do the super knee and super uppercut like you can in dd2 for the nes.
you can pick whatever color billy or Jimmy you want. and also sonny from dd3. but you can also play as...willy with gun. abobo. linda. Roper and a few others. they are ok to play once or twice. but the regular ddr characters are better. oh and he made it so you can pick up those ninja sticks.

Well, the 30,000 other people who watched it seemed to hear me just fine, despite the "old" music and sound effects.
Same Name, Different Game My apologies, that was a typo. That should not have been “old”, but rather “loud.” Using the audio from the game is a perfectly valid and good choice for background, allowing you to showcase the game at the same time as teaching it. That said, at points such as 2:07 your voice and the background music are at the same level, creating an audibly muddled effect. Moving forward just as the human eye has evolved to be attracted to movement, the ear has evolved to be attracted to quick sound as a defensive tool. Couple that with the normal changes in inflection, pitch, and volume of natural human speech means that you are, at points, at the same register as the punch kick explosion sound effects. This is especially bad at 2:35 where you are literally drowned out by a scream. This is the video at the top of your page. The video that you use to greet new people and to showcase the best of your work, and in the first 3 minutes you are audibly muffled, lost among explosions, and drowned out entirely by screams. Then at the end of the video you use us for money via a patreon link. No, a numbers game does not denote quality. We are not here for the game. We are here for your thoughts on it. Thoughts which you have made the baffling choice to drown out with screams of death. Since you did throw out a number, I would like to bring to your attention that 30,000 people did not seem to hear you just fine. 822 did. 33,170 people watched at least 30 seconds of the video, including myself. Twice. Of those 33,170, 2% said they enjoyed it. You many take this as you wish. It is your channel, your videos, and your vision. I am just letting you know why I am not watching your videos moving forward and am making an attempt to bring to your attention why, rather then just walking away, or just hitting the thumbs down button with you having no idea why I did not enjoy it.
@@SamA-cw3be I'm sure that's a very good novella you've written, but I can't be bothered to read it. Thanks for the engagement on the video, though!
18:44 I actually don't find the Genesis music used in the example here to be bad. Those sound effects when you do the jumping double kick sounds awful though
A lot of people seem to REALLY LIKE the Genesis music, and I guess it's fine, but that sound effect of the hurricane kick just makes the overall audio experience really rough.
The kicks sound like they used the Sega Master System sound chip.
Easy way to beat Burnov in stage 1. Get him all the way to the right. Hurricane kick him. He will fall off the platform.
True.
DD2 (PCE CD) > DD2 (NES) > DD2 (Arcade)
I'd honestly put the NES in front of the Super CD version, but I like all three.
I want that shirt!
I got it from TheYetee.com!
Hey Joe. Any chance of a SNDG for Final Fight?
Definitely a chance.
I think the 2 worst Dragon games were Double Dragon & Battletoads and Double Dragon advance.
I respect your opinion, and Battletoads/DD is definitely a weaker one, but DD Advance is one of the best in the series, if you ask me.
@@SameNameDifferentGameI liked it. I just hated that they combined both Double Dragon and Double 2 in one whole game. And I hate that they made Billy a brunet and Jimmy blond. When Billy is suppost to be blond and Jimmy is suppost to be brunet.
Eh, Jimmy's been blonde for a while. I like the designs in Super DD a lot and Jimmy is blonde there, so I'm fine with it.
man i like your snk t shirt, where do you get that ? please share a link =]
It's from TheYetee.com!
Shout going out to Hickman
Hey thanks
