For a wattmeter to read PEP it must have some type of power so if you use the cross needle meter for PEP it will require it to be plugged into the power plug.
I got the mfj 849...It works very nice!

The first thing I noticed on the cross-needle was the OVER-SHOOT!
Cute meter for the shack, in the field I'd prefer one that doesn't use power.
But then to be honest in the field I'd use my Z817 (no meter needed) or a tuner like the MFJ-971 with one build in.
Thanks for the review though as I'm thinking of getting a shack swr meter for the shack.
Atu-100/Atu-130 are great for field trips, work off Internal 18650 rechargable batteries that give upto 12hrs standby, worth a look at, I don't think they made them 5yrs ago lol. 73's
Hi,good interesting video, I do a similar test with the KPO digital swr and power metre and the DAIWA 903 ,3000 watt's Cross hair metre, for SSB work the Cross hair metre is much easier to understand, thanks from Rotterdam....
Does it come with the DC adapter cable needed to power it, and if not, will a simple 1 amp "wall wart" work? I know that is all you need to power a regular one where the lamp that illuminates the meter is all it powers. But I am wondering how much power it requires.
I like to know can i use my AV-400 meter that is 140 to 525mhz for 50 to 54MHZ i know the meter is out of band but i just like to know how fare out it would be and if it can tell me if my SWR is even close to good, it did a test the ref is very low and my fwd is high, my radio is a kenwood ts 690sat and on full power its using 12 amps on TX in to my ANT i just made

I do not have an external SWR meter such as you do in this video. I just rely on my internal SWR meter on the the radio however I do have a question about my analog meter on my radio. In this video you have your radio set to 100 watts and when you key up the mic, both on the analog and the digital meter shows 100 watts of forward power being put out which means it is very accurate and working properly. Now, here is my problem. I have the IC-7300. This IC-7300 has an analog meter. When I set my IC-7300 to 100 watts and key up my mic the forward power is suppose to show 100 watts of forward power being put out however my analog meter shows only 35 watts of forward power being put out. What do you think could be causing such a huge discrepancy between the 100 watts the IC-7300 is set to and and the actual amount of forward power (35watts) that is being put out?

quick question: does it measure PEP?
Question. I just bought this meter and when I transmit it reads 0watts output on HF unless I talk. Then it will vary between 0 and say 60 on the meter depending on how loud I talk. Why does yours key up to 100 watts output when you just press the putt switch? Am I missing something here. Thank you for the video.
That is a sideband without modulation. Switch your rig from LSB / USB to AM or RTTY, it will read a constant output. WW1TA

Can you do a video showing the baofeng UV-5R and how many watts it really transmit on both bands. I would like to know since it’s one of the cheapest radios out there.
F. Villela all of them would be different. Each radio is an individual just like anything made in mass production.
I have to say that my digital VSWR//Watt meter is perfect, though mine has NISSEI, not MFJ on the front, so, who is the maker/ distributor of this wonderful digital meter? I'm sure MFJ buy in the units too. Do MFJ claim to make there's? I did some math and found that the reason for the difference in reading from the digital (almost nothing) was the power needed to lift the analogue meter. I have pushed 500W through min digital and it read 500 too! I didn't expect that. Though my analogue twin needle meter handles 3KW and is remarkably accurate too. I have the KPO DG-103 metre just the same as the digital metre, gives an average power output, but it does struggle to stay the same, I may key up 250w & it will slowly go downwards and stop around 240/235w.
Never do I get any reflect its always power at the antenna, and at £170.00 I was expecting a better product.
It would have been nice if you did a real world comparison using an actual antenna, to show us if both meters displayed equal values.
The explanation of the cross needle was more than adequate. We certainly got the idea.

New to hobby. Do you keep the power meter in-line during normal operation? Or is this unit meant to be for testing only.
Tyrone it's totally upto you, I leave my metre Inline always on both of my radios, some people will argue differently, but tbh personally I think its a safer option.
Have you tried it on SSB as I'm interested in buying one but does it do Peak Envelope Power??

I bought one, and it is useless on SSB. I am here trying to find a mod to make it display PEP. On CW digital, or AM/FM it works great!

The cross needle meter needs power for the peak reading feature. Not just for the backlight.
Does it matter where the swr meter is placed before or after the tuner?
Ater the radio and prior to the tuner.

Big Rob Brown this meter works on frequencies from 1.6 MHz through to 525 MHz so yes it can be used on the cb band

You can clearly see that the digital meter is not a genuine MFJ product - it's too well built. It is actually made by Nissei, and MFJ put their logo on.
MFJ rebrands some things. I have an antenna window clip mount that I believe is a rebrand of an HYS. But, that's not always a bad thing, because in my case it meant getting the mount at HRO off the shelf same day or in 2 days if out of stock vs. waiting for 1 month to get it from CZ China....maybe.
not sure if your following the thread still, do you know for a fact that the Nissei is a partly better unit than the MFJ or same with different name stenciled on face?

I know Eric and that was just a joke about this new type of video that he has begun making. Longer doesnt necessarily mean better, and this is a perfect example. When making a technical video for the new ham operator, small doses of technical learning works best. im looking forward to these shorties! I would rather see someone spend five minutes, learning a little tidbit on a technical matter, than watching someone spend five minutes memorizing test ANSWERS just to pass the test, yet have no clue what they are doing... It is worthless in terms of SSB; it lacks features like peak hold, among others. This makes this meter, in my opinion, less suitable than a good cross meter.
