The album version contains many improvements over the RUclips version, including:
-Added the shaker instrument, which I had somehow missed.
-Redid the arpeggio to give it a more staccato sound with an echo like in the original.
-Replaced most of the old percussion with the newer EWQL Hollywood Orchestral Percussion library.
-Included newer brass and woodwind libraries.
-Made various mixing improvements.
-Changed the intro to match the original.
-Several other minor improvements.
================================
(Original Description)
An orchestral remake/remix/cover of the Undersea Palace theme from Chrono Trigger using high-end sample libraries.
I combined several non-synth instruments (bagpipes, celli, alto flutes, harp, yangqin and piano) to achieve the synth-like sound at the beginning. Later in the track, I layered in an actual synth to give it a stronger effect.

That tense, stomach curdling feeling you felt the first time you played the game, heard this music and saved to see the chapter title "Lavos Beckons"
It's almost insane how much they do to foreshadow **spoilers** death. It's like everything you see and hear once you get to Zeal is an omen...a black omen lol.
Playing this with my partner and it's her first time. We just went through the ocean palace where The Thing happens and she lost her mind.
+AuspexAO *I respect the spoiler* thing alot
I saw "Lavos Beckons" and thought
'I'm nearing the end game now aren't I? Shit's getting super intense!' and oh boy i did not think that thing was actually going to come to pass and I _ONLY LOST MY DAMN MIND._ I have not experienced something like that in a game since either.
its at 69 so i cant upvote, but you're totally right imo
That moment when the theme play even during battles. Goosebumps everytime.
its subtle things like that that truly make this game memorable. or like how magus' theme plays when he's in your party when fighting queen zeal
Or when you enter magus's castle and that eerie song never stops playing, it just added to the build up when you fight magus at the top of the castle
@@bigbirdmusic8199 I loved that! Made it feel like for once, I was the boss in the boss battle.
Never have I heard something so calm and tense at the same time. It's harmonic and dissonant at the same time
Yes, That's how we feel when we get to that part of the game.
That’s incredible I was going to say the same thing.
Like barrel of nitroglycerine is being filled. Once it overflows trouble begins. Fast and loud as well.
This melody sound like a Nuclear Apocalypse countdown alarm and a "whatever you do you're screwed anyway" voice, both at the same time
This game, this music. 1995...I still get goosebumps.
I absolutely love how you used a synth as the secondary melody. This Undersea Palace, dangerous and horrifying as it is, is a technological marvel. Heck, it even was the inspiration for another robotic area, the CORE in Undertale. Orchestral as this cover is, I feel that synth was necessary to achieve that feeling of how you’re in a huge, unimaginably complicated machine. With the metal clanks and the cymbals crashes like waves at 1:17, this cover really makes this song active.
Lavos Yup! The attention to detail is astounding.
I hate to be that one wet blanket, but I really feel like this piece is not the same without the driving synth at the beginning.
+dotwarner17 You're definitely not the only one who thinks that.
Honestly I felt like he did a nice job getting that crunch in the beginning without synth
It's so peaceful and so tense at the same time. Beautiful orchestration.
FistFighter239 Thanks for the comment! I think "peaceful and tense" describes this piece perfectly.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic I think it's less peaceful *and* tense as much as it is peaceful *yet* tense
Iran Terres Thanks! This remake was a bit of a challenge because, as a hybrid electronic/orchestral piece, I had to decide how much of it should be electronic and how much should be orchestral. I'm sure it could be punchier if change the synth and adjust its volume. If I do a second version (which is very likely), it will be a couple years from now when my skills have improved significantly.
Malcolm Robinson Music Dude, This version is completely awesome. You captured the mood of the moment in the game like, perfect! I dont think a remake could improve much on this, though i am curious to give it a listen! This is my go-to track for this song, none of the other remixes of this song get better than this.
Jane Minersha I really appreciate the comment! After listening to this again almost six months later, I think it actually sounds good enough to go on my cover album in its current state. Of course, I'll try to tweak some things here and there, especially the intro, but it's possible I won't be able to make a significantly better version.
Malcolm Robinson Music Ive always wanted to do one that uses a grind-y synth for the undertone with a lot of sine output that follows the noted changes. Almost like darkwave/retro 80s sounding synth. It wouldn't change much but the sound it makes would give a completely different techno-ish feel to it.
It’s been 5 years I hope you do version 2
did you ever remake this?
My favorite Chrono Trigger song remastered perfectly. You have some true talent.
Hearing this song in game made panic rise in me, like i had no time to waste, lest i lose the world. This remix, brings back that same panic, and instills it with newfound panic. Truly, this is an amazing piece of work.
This whole theme has that feeling of tension and time running out
This magnum opus of music always brings a chill down my spine. Awesome indeed.
+GYIYGABITE Thanks! I'm glad so many people have liked this one. It's one of my favorite tracks from the game.
my favorite track from this game, I didn't really paid attention to it the first time I've played chrono trigger, but I found it so intriguing and magic now, thanks for giving us a really nice version of it
Annko R For me, Undersea Palace was one of the most memorable tracks from the game because it matched the scene perfectly and played uninterrupted for quite a while. I suppose the fact that you didn't notice it at first means that it did a good job establishing the atmosphere. Anyway, I'm glad you like my version! :)
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic for me its gotta be Enhasa and Schala's theme.
Thank you. You made a great song even greater and for that, you are a great man.
This is hands down my favorite of your CT remixes
You've recreated the feeling perfectly. Very well done!!
great job, my personal favorite track from CT, well done sir
The way you created that synth-like sound is genius! Altogether, your orchestral remixes are amazing!
I've listened to this maybe 50 times now, it's so great. Well, all of these arrangements have been great, they're addicting to listen to. Amazing job!!!
This has been my favorite theme out of Chrono trigger and it was done so well in this remix.
OMG I actually got goosebumps as if I was playing this back in 95.... That means this is a EPIC masterpiece!!! you Sir Malcolm The Great are the BEST at this.... Keep it up!!! and hopefully Nobuo and SE hear these.... and come a calling
Superbly done!
Loving all your work so far!
My #1 favorite song throughout this entire game!
Awesome, nice work!
idk if anyone ever noticed that when you get to this place, the sound effects for the attacks and chosing something get a slight eco, idk why but it really makes the moment feel all the more important and it just makes that part of the game more enjoyable (especially when you land a critical hit with crono, god i love that sound)
The sound environment of the Undersea Palace just seems entirely aimed at making you feel like something's off lol
This remix is so beautifully haunting, thank you so much for making it. I think it really captures that in CT, "IT" is about to hit the fan, when this music first started playing.
Justin Bailey Thank you for the kind comment! I always try to capture the original feeling of the game in my remixes. This is why I only do remixes of games that I've actually played.
I've never played Chrono Trigger, but I have heard the original and resurrection versions of this track. And while I like the other two versions, this is now my favorite as it feels more like a water level theme, which I often consider one of the best in a given game.
+James Heart I never really thought about, but I guess the undersea palace in Chrono Trigger is the closest thing in the game to a water level since it's literally under water. Anyway, I'm glad you liked my version! :)
Dude play chrono trigger!!
I just found this channel and I want to compliment you on how fantastic your work is. You attempt very hard to keep the integrity of the original music, something that people rarely try to do. You deserve more subscribers and views. Thank you for your hard work. I hope you do Corridors of Time one day.
+ZerogunRivale Thank you very much! I always do my best to preserve the essence of the original compositions. I'm glad you like it and I most definitely will do Corridors of Time.
excellent job remastering this ost..
The race to the rainbow shell during the kings trial was tense
I'm on that scene right now on my playthrough!
Excellent excellent !
Track of legends.
Great job! :)
After playing this game for years, i FINALLY tried a randomizer. I found it fun and ironic that I got to go to the Undersea Palace with my favorite character, Magus, in the lead.
The music sets the scene perfect for the underwater palace
I dread this place. It feels like the point in the game where everything becomes serious business. We're going to stop a world-annihilation level threat, but we still don't know how. We just keep going deeper and deeper and hoping a solution is revealed in the way.
Spoiler alert: That doesn't happen, we lose and everything sucks.
This is an awesome mix of synth and non synth, as another poster said, this track told you that the kid gloves were off, and that you were going to have to REALLY work to save the world AND the time stream from here on out.
+Tekisasubakani Thank you! It was really hard at the time to decide between a pure orchestral version and a hybrid version, but I'm glad I went with the hybrid version. The arpeggio is one of my better experiments in sound design, and I think most people who hear it wouldn't realize that it's a combination of sampled instruments without any synths until the strings and synth come in at 0:22.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic Coming back to listen to this 7 years later and yup, the hybrid choice was the right one.
My favorite Chrono Trigger track. Great job on the remaster although I feel as if you could've increased the tempo a bit to match the game. When I increased the playback speed to x1.25 it was too fast but a little closer to the in game experience. Just my take. Still a wonderful job. Cheers
Awesome, dude. I hope you remake all the OST.
dollmasterx Thank you! My current plan is to remake 30 of the tracks from the OST. I'm already 1/3 of the way there!
Damn, this is guuuuuuuud
yeeeaaa!
Lavos beckons....
Impressive
IT'S IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAMES !!!!
Love it! Gonna do the Black Omen Theme?

If they remake Chrono Trigger. They should pay you for this.
Sonic The Hedgehog They wouldn't even have to pay me. I'd be so honored that I'd let them use it for free! :)
+Malcolm Robinson Music This song screams include me. And Chrono needs to be brought back. Might even save the Wii U from a terrible fate.
The fact that you are talented enough to make great music greater can help bring back Chrono
I love this theme so much. But I do have a question. Why didn't the Black Omen rise from the sea before during the original timeline? Zeal was successful in both the original and altered timelines as to summoning Lavos.
Can I like this one more than once please?
+bardacuda82 I've always considered positive comments to be second likes. :)
When you hear this theem, you know one thing. Something is _so_ coming.
As someone who's beaten CT...well, we really shouldn't spoil it. Those who don't know, play the frickkin' game already!
I want Lavos World Revolution theme!!! you are awsome!
+henrique oliveira
"World Revolution" will happen sometime this year. Thanks!
awesome!
Rounders.
I love this song so much.
I'm surprised no one made a modern freestyle rap and beat with/to this song tho.(not any that I know of) In the right hands, it would be Fire!
Parts of it sound like the back track to an older rap
Zeal: Schala raise the output of the Mammon Machine to it’s limit
Schala: (quiet)
Zeal: Schala you dare disobey me
Schala: (sighs) Very well mother
Zeal: Oh what splendor behold the incredible power of Lavos
Schala: (grunts)
Mammon Machine :Now what the prophet seeks unbound
Melchior: I dedicate my hopes in this blade so when this is done new life comes our way
Masa and Mune join Melchior: We rest in your hands our hopes you command our dreams in this blade United we stand
Schala: Into the night I pray hope for a brighter day
Magus/Prophet: Now where it begins will shape history
Zeal joins Magus: A future when in we shape destiny so let this world spin
Zeal: I finally see inmortality (laughs)
Melchior: I dedicate my life to machines my tools of the trade do that we can see
Massa and Mune join Melchoir: New life in our hands together we fight for the future of man we change it tonight
Schala: Into the night I pray hope for a brighter day
Cromo and Lucca: Now where it begins will shape history
Zeal and Magus: A future where in we change destiny
Marle: Enough of your sins
Lucca: Let’s break this machine
Zeal: The Mammon Machine
Magus/Prophet: It’s too late he comes
Schala: It’s no use that sword alone cannot stop it
This was my favorite song from Chrono Trigger. This remake captures it almost perfectly, amazing work. While I'm not usually a fan of remasters, this one is absolutely amazing. I did notice it was missing the some background noise. So I scrolled through the comments to see I'm not the only one who realized it, others mentioned it's missing the "shaker" sound. This is the only thing keeping it from being absolutely perfect. I was wondering if you ever did create a version with it, or have any interest in adding that effect? I mean the song is great without it, but it's like one step from being epic.
I'm planning to make an updated version this year for the second volume of my Chrono Trigger album along with an updated version of Boss Battle 2. I'll definitely add the shaker and fix a few other minor problems.
Missing the stfu sound.
imo instead of getting teleported out of here, there should have been an escape sequence. that's its that's literally my only complaint about this game
It's very similar to the "beneath the surface" theme from golden sun. It's a shame that Nintendo doesn't allow cover licenses.
Overall excellent orchestration, though I have to wonder if there's a particular reason why you have the lead organ playing the opening melody in sets of 6 notes instead of 11. Pardon my insanely gimpy lack of music terminology for it, but it's basically going "doo DEE doo doo doo doo" instead of the original's "doot DEEDLE doodle doodle doodle doodle". I feel like the track loses some of its essence, that feel of tension, without the rapid pairs of notes in that refrain. Any chance you add that back in along with the maraca when you make the updated version? The rest of it is already fantastic.
Sorry for the late reply. When I made this, I thought the "delay" or echoed notes in the arpeggio didn't matter and I just used six single notes instead. Later, I started to wonder whether it would sound better with the delay, so I've been planning to experiment with it for the updated/album version and I'll end up using the version of the arpeggio that I think sounds the best.
Agreed, zibbity. Acoustically they add a pleasing fullness to the opening sequence. Visually, they help call to mind the feeling of being in a large open room. Much as you might find in a palace.
Malcolm, it's great you including the synth, and let me assure, you've done an excellent job of making it fit right in with a traditional orchestra. This is an otherwise perfect composition of Undersea Palace. I'm subscribing to you because of it. I hope you make an updated version with some echo on the synth. I'm sure it's tricky to get right, so take your time. Quality is always worth the wait. :D
I too agree with Zibbity.
I also imagine it is quite difficult to get it to sound just right. But I have confidence Malcolm will do his best to make the change and you can bet the final product will be fantastic as it always is
dude if they ever make a remake of chrono trigger sell them these remixes
You need to GTFO tta here with this. How do you make one of the most harrowing gaming experiences of my life even more nail-biting? You've done a service to us all.
I wish Lavos was something greater. Perhaps a more real manifestation of something relatable that still consumes worlds, but perhaps someone/something of once great renown that was perhaps infected by a time event on his or her own world of origin which they willingly stumbled upon just as our adventurers do... Yet Lavos went too far, opening rifts of time ill-advised by the guardians of time. To which would further broaden the importance of the Chrono Trigger and finally seal away this wound in time that caused so much chaos. Perhaps that was what Lavos once was... Just an explorer corrupted by time and space itself due to its fascination with time...
This is definitely missing the shaker/maraca sound in the background, but overall is definitely a good remix.
Thanks! I'm planning to make an updated version soon for the album, and I'll definitely add the shaker and fix a few other minor problems.
It's been a year. Have you made the updates to this track yet? :)
Malcom this version is very good, but would be even better if you also bring a punchier version of it, much like the SNES, have you ever minded trying that?
The world is in a freaking danger while this plays
Tech - Rawesome music - magic cost 30mp
Catchy like the Core in Undertale
Is there somewhere to get this album for digital download?
This track will be on my second Chrono Trigger album titled "Chrono Trigger: Orchestral Selections Vol. II" which will be available for digital download from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, etc. sometime this year. The album version of Undersea Palace will have a few improvements/changes, but it will have the same overall feel as the RUclips version.
Crono, Ayla, Marle.

:D
wait, was the synth always out of sync like that?
Dis shit go stupid hard dumb. Me n my boi freestyling- chillin 😎 in da Blackbird 🛩🪐
I love this piece. The hubris and arrogance of trying to harness a power that is barely understood really comes through.
And that synth feels so 80s lol
If anyone is still commenting here, read this: GO PLAY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW!!!!

Synth becomes grating and track is over compressed...
Appropriate for the night of March 3, 2020. We're in a race against time to nominate Bernie Sanders, defeat Donald Trump and save the world from obliteration.
That held up well.
God, I hated this place! The music is awesome though
