  • Departing IFR can be challenging especially when you need to get your IFR Clearance from a non-towered airport. There are several methods to picking up your IFR clearance from the ground at a non-towered airport. In this video Jason shows how it's done.

    Nice video but you used to word “TO” when saying you were up “to” 9000. Was that climbing 29,000 or to 9000? See what I learned on day 10? 😀

    16 for 16. Noticed you said “Up to niner thousand” in your coms. Thinking back to an earlier video this month where you mentioned this could be heard as Up 29,000. See, I really am 16 /16. Mentioning this in good fun. Happens to everyone. Thanks for the great info and lessons. 😄

      29,000 would be referred to as flight level 2 niner 0 either way.

    16 for 16.
    An airport I used to fly out of in Pell City, AL had a remote call station that you could key up with the radio, but it actually called Birmingham Approach over a telephone land line. You would click the mic a few times, then you would hear the phone ring over the radio. They would answer (hopefully), and you could get your clearance with them.

    16/16. I've just started working on my IFR ticket and this video is a good reminder of how much I need to learn and understand. Thanks for making it look easy! Also, great to see your "back seat" pilots.
    On a complete side note, I purchased a Grumman Tiger in April 2022 at Tampa Executive and left from Runway 050. Flew it back to California, but seeing your takeoff brought back a great memory!

    16/16. I might take issue with pulling up to #1 before you get the clearance. The issue being told “clearance on request”, and now you have 2 planes behind you and you cannot depart.

    IFR helps people be safer, as long as they don’t takeoff into a downdraft. I would use IFR skills on long cross country for sure. How is it flying a stick and rudder plane when you are used to a yoke? Your kids are probably going to become passionate pilots. I would feel much safer flying than driving, because planes keep their distance and pilots take the rules seriously. Being instrument rated increases your situational awareness a lot I am sure, even if you fly VFR.

Would it have been better or okay to have The uncontrolled field in the com 2 so you could still listen to control on com 1 if she needed you? Or do they just know that you will be switching until air born?

    It looks like you were quickly given 4000 shortly after takeoff, but bravo starts at 3000. I don't remember hearing bravo clearance. Was that given or it was okay because you are on IFR and you had an altitude clearance?

    16/16 but gotta give you a hard time on this one. After two videos about what not to say on the radios you come in with "last call"? Are you at a bar?? Lol seriously though it is redundant. When you say you're departing the area that already tells everyone it's the last transmission you intend to make there.
