I cannot comprehend who are the 343 people who dislike this heavenly hymn. I am Greek born and raised and proud to be one. But Hawai'i shook me to the core. This is the "Stone Eating" song of protest, which was written by Eleanor Prendergast in 1893. It is also known as Mele Aloha Aina, the "Patriot's Song" and is still popular in Hawaii today, although it is not clear how many non-Hawaiian speaking listeners are aware of the song's historical significance or the profound antipathy to U.S. annexation in its lyrics. Queen Lili'uokalani wanted to reverse the "Bayonet Constitution" that her brother, KIng Kalakaua, was forced to sign. In other words, she wanted to restore the voting rights to our Hawaiian people and to also restore power to the Hawaiian monarchy. In that process, she made many enemies, especially those who had political control and power. Many plantation owners, who were mostly haole, had political power at that time and that is how the Committee of Safety (13 members) was formed. The Committee of Safety forced the abdication of Queen Lili'uokalani. That is the historical background regarding this song. Any comments or questions are always welcomed. Armando Sierra
How I found out that this was a protest song was when a group sang this song where each verse was followed by an English translation. Does anyone know the name of the group? It was very powerful!
It’s 2024…thank you, Hawaii for your welcoming arms during many, many visits over the years. I love and respect your Islands, your heritage, your culture and the blessings you have given to others. Beautiful people, beautiful islands. Sharing your world made my life so, so much richer in that I think your music is what still quiets my soul.
As a native if the land. I am so Proud to be HAWAIIAN. Yes it is sad what happened to my people. However what was wrong is wrong. No changing that. This made me cry, I really felt this through my soul. And I just stumbled upon this video, and not sure how I didn't come across this all these years. This is so amazing. Mahalo a nui to those who sang this, and 'O wau nō me ka mahalo Queen Liliu'okalani, respectfully and forever ❤
My heart is heavy with love for all that is beautiful in these people who sing for the Islands. May we find the grace to listen with equal passion and understanding.
Having lived in Hawaii for over 20 years before retiring to Thailand, I can honestly say that this video made me want to pack my bags and fly back immediately. Absolutely beautiful.

As a norwegian who live far far away from Hawai'i I feel at some point I lived on the hawaiian islands in my past life. Been to O'ahu twice and both times I felt "I'm home now". Thank you so much for the video. I can play it over and over again. Aloha
WHEN WE WERE YNG WE WERE FORBIDDEN TO SPEAK HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE ,,,, WHAT WE SPOKE WE SPOKE AT HOME . A BIG MAHALO TO THOSE THAT HAVE KEPT IT ALIVE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOL HAS DONE SO MUCH TO PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE THE KINGDOM OF HAWAII ALWAYS REMAINS IN THE HEART
Speaking of Kamehameha, kudos to the kumu hula of Iolani School. I saw the Kane perform at Hawaii Theater. He did an outstanding job of teaching hula to the mainly Asian kane. This is a reminder that they are all keiki o ka aina! (Children of the land). They are all preserving the traditions of Hawaii for generations to come!
The people with the 178 thumbs down shame on you. Must not be Hawaiian or know of the Hawaiians struggle and pain as a people who were duped and cheated by the Haole businessmen. "Kaulana Na Pua" is our protest against the injustice. I love this rendition and talent of all the artists who participated. Mahalo! Nui Loa very much........
Mahalo! so much for your understanding. Not many people in the United States know of this crime that the USA stole the Hawaiian Islands except for some members of the congress who know & some head of the Military who know well that all of this is proceeding in the International courts that the USA has no jurisdictions because Hawaii was a Kingdom with a monarchy who had treaties with the major powers of that time period. There is a book called "A Kingdom stolen"
Udui1o1 yes. this was not right. but you must understand this is how the world works. if that country is stronger, then they reign. survival of the fittest. even though it wasn't right, it was bound to happen anyway. you have to look on the positive side and think about how much amenities we wouldn't have right now that were provided to us from foreign countries. also we could've been taken over by a more oppressive country like Russia. then the Hawaiian culture would probably be totally dead. you have to be thankful for what we have. don't hold grudges against these "haole" people. the Hawaiian people were the same way as these westerners. they took each other over in battle. just not in as large of a scale
I agree with you however the truth must always be told about how it happened. I myself having Caucasian ancestry can surely talk about it. I do understand that all countries have done this to their neighbors and to their own people. Remember the Pope in medieval times gave permission to Spain one of the world powers to take over the western hemisphere while Portugal take over the East. Because the Pope says so does it give them the right to do so and in the name of God? Many of the indigenous people of the world have suffered because of the imperialist attitude. The Ryukyu kingdom Okinawa has the same mirrored history as Hawaii when the Japanese overthrew their kingdom. Till today Hawaii has not solved the problem with the USA. Prof. Keanu Sai at the UH has gone to the Netherlands with others to have Hawaii's plight heard. So much more info. and things to learn.........
Hawaii was the first place I was stationed after I joined the Air Force. Best 3 years of my life. I loved it there. The food, people, music, culture etc. I made some life long friends there. I was there in 1997-1999 and I know I could go there now and have a place to stay without even having to ask. I am as haole as they come, but I could go to the west side of Oahu to Wianiai where I was told they don't like white people over there. After making friends with some of the local people, they took me over there to a beach party. I was nervous because of all the horror stories I heard. I was respectful and didn't act like a moron and was accepted like I lived there my whole life. I could go there right now and walk in like nothing I am sure. As long as you were respectful they would treat you like their own family. I loved it over there. I miss it so much.
Any “no breaths” can be welcomed and accepted if they are humble not brash, soft spoken and not a loud mouth, generous and not a skinflint when invited to a home or party. For example, bring poke not potato chips!
To annadecastro who says lottidotti’s comments make no sense whatsoever, please read the above comments. We locals understand it absolutely! Evidently, you’re not from Hawaii!
I'm Homesick for a visit to my Hawaiian friends!!! I'm so grateful for the Hawaiian visits we've had for 35 years!!!! You will never be the same person as you were before visiting the Islands!!!!! Sadly we may not be able to fly there again because of health issues!!! Asking for your continued prayers and Hawaiian support!!!! ALOHA A A A A TO ALL!!!!!
I visited Hawaii in 1985. The second I stepped off the plane I could sense the warm, peaceful ambiance. It happened to be the week of the Kamahameha music contest, and played from every t.v. and radio on the island. Sooo beautiful. Thank you, Hawaii. Unforgettable!
I first heard this song during my honeymoon trip in Kauai in 1997, this mele stuck in my heart. It is so beautiful and well put together. I am not a Hawaiian, but I can feel the Hawaiian people's love for their beautiful land and the frustration with what have been taken away from them. I love Hawaiian musics and hula.
Mahalo❤era meraviglioso ascoltare queste voci calde, gli strumenti allegri e la lingua così speciale e bellissima (anche se non ci ho capito niente). Aloha wau ia 'oe. 😊
Hawai’i and it's beautiful people and music are one of God's gifts to mankind. And females are the treasures of the universe. God and all the Guardian Angels love to listen to your musics. It brings always big joy and happiness ❤😊 Awesome thanks, a friend from Germany, South...P. S.: Hawai’i belongs to the Hawai’ian people, not to the U. S.
Hermoso , precioso, fabuloso... amo Hawaii estoy enamorada de Honolulu es el paraíso en la tierra ❤...he ido 6 veces y espero el 2024 sea la séptima vez si dios así lo quiere.🌺
rest in peace Palani Vaughan...we lost two beloved musicians from Hawaii this year and featured in this video... the other Ernie Cruz Jr. your music will live on ♡ aloha
Their spirits live on through their beautiful voices and message they have left behind. I'm not Hawaiian so pardon my ignorance...at the beginning is that the Hawaiian Flag Chant being recited by the children? I've heard it once before and thought I recognized it. Such a beautiful statement and may the younger generation keep alive such a beautiful culture!
Hawaii born and raised, left 4 years ago to be with my childhood sweetheart who is also Hawaii born and raised. In our senior years have a dream of returning to the Aina our home land, our roots. Our dreams will happen for we are in progress. Aloha from the heart
Hawaiian is such a beautiful language. I shake my head to think it was banned in school for a long period. I'm proud of my Hawaiian heritage and our Hawaiian language. Kaulana Nā Pua" is a Hawaiian patriotic song written by Eleanor Kekoaohiwaikalani Wright Prendergast in 1893 for members of the Royal Hawaiian Band who protested the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani and the Hawaiian Kingdom.
I am learning Hawaiian language now with Duolingo and I absolutely love it. I love the language, the music, tradition. All of it, one day I hope to go there. Malama pono
Very difficult to listen to this mele without getting emotional. Don’t truly know why but it does. Just feel it tugging at my naʻau with deep ferocity. Aloha ʻĀina, aloha ʻōiwi, aloha ka ʻĪo.
I got emotional reading your reply. Hawaiian music touches the heart and soul, and this mele in particular. Many thanks to the haku mele and artists who articulate it.
I got emotional the first time seeing this and now again as I rekindle with this song while listening to a Na Hoku Hanohano 2022 playlist. Must be in my blood (maternal grandma was pure Hawaiian)!🤙🏽
Can't believe how many of these legends have passed on. RIP Palani Vaughn, Ernie Cruz, and others. Thank you for recording this when you did. Mahalo! #FBI96743
Love the comments below wondering how folks could actually dislike this obviously joyful collaboration of voices. I don’t speak Hawaiian but know they sing of honoring the special place that is Hawaii and how preserving the music, cultures and traditions is imperative to maintaining this place where spirit oozes from the earth and the sea. The word AINA speaks not just of the land, but more to the spiritual connectivity, or symbiosis, of the land and it’s’ peoples. Personally, all I need to is to hear a little slack key guitar riff, the rhythm of the ipus, or the prayer-like chant announcing the hula story that will unfold and I am all thumbs up
My teacher showed us this video in my Hawaiian Studies class. It struck something in me and I can't stop listening to it now. There artistic and symbolic in every aspect of the song and the video. I love it. "Hawaii for Hawaiians" .
Megan, I agree, "Hawai'i for Hawaiians", but please don't forget there are us malahini who don't fit in Anglo society either because we don't buy into the whole selfish schtick. Our souls need a peaceful place to rest also, even though we will never be kamaina.
ALOHA MOLOKAI ALOHA MAUI , ALOHA KAUI , ALOHA OAHU , ALOHA HAWAII NEVA GOING HOME AGAIN . TO MUCH HASSLES TO CATCH A PLANE TO A PLACE THAT HAS GONE AWAY EMBRACE THE KINGDOM IN THE HEART .. IT NEVER DIES THERE .. MAHALO HAWAII FOR THE LIFE LIVED THERE IT WAS AWSOME
Mahalo to those who made this video possible for all people to see and hear who we Hawaiian's are and what the future brings us to. We are alive we never was extinguish from our AINA. Imua Aloha
I think I was Hawaiian in another life, this song is so beautiful !! I can play this song over and over and it just makes me feel good inside, Just my true thoughts
I love this, I too am not Hawaiian, but my heart was opened to the Aloha spirit and i am uplifted still by the beautiful language and music of the people. At this time of great suffering in the world I look to Hawaii and photos posted every day from a friend and it gives me peace.
Beautifully done. I was born and raised in Honolulu. I now live in San Francisco and this rendition makes me sad and homesick. Thank you to all the performers (some I grew up listening to). You are all Great.
Good reminder where we come from. Let those who "dislike" shop ABC Store. Hawaiian music is to be listened with our heart & soul... ah that explains the dislikes! Mahalo from the 9th island.
Mahalo to all of you who had a part in producing in this beloved song "Kaulana Na Pua." Do listen to your kupunas and heed their advice in keeping the native Hawaiian traditions and culture alive for future generations !!!! Am of Chinese ancestry and humbly appreciate the the kindness extended to me by the native Hawaiians here !!!!! Me ke aloha pumehana, Robert S.J. Hu September 24, 2020.
Mahalo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Robert January 24, 2021.
This is a protest song in Hawai'i . It's lyrics have a kaona or hidden meaning. KAULANA NA PUA O HAWAI'I (Famous are the flowers of Hawai'i). The flowers are the people of Hawai'i. Beautiful video with the famous of Hawai'is singers & musicians . Show respect for the native peoples (including myself !) Nothing like TRUE ALOHA !! Kaleolani F.
I'm a Finnish guy who has recently truly discovered the Hawaiian language along with her music and immediately begun studying! : ) Thanks for clarifying about this wonderful song.
WOW!!! I hardly ever say hewa, but having an ad for Na'i Aupuni before Kaulana Na Pua is the most HEWA! This song was written OPPOSING the Annexation of Hawaii to the United States. The great wrong that was done to our people and our Queen! My father Kihei Soli Niheu helped to revive this song in the 1970's during the protest of the mass evictions occuring all across the islands of Kanaka... one of the most notable in KALAMA VALLEY where Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate were party to the destruction and eviction of a farming community to create a middle class suburb. Although it became known as the birthplace of the Hawaiian Renaissance, it also has deep, deep roots in incredible injustice, where a few choose profit over community.
I am from the Philippines and some of my relatives live and work in Hawai'i. I know the struggles and the pains for the islands were occupied, the natives are being driven out from their sacred lands, and their livelihood in peril because of unfair trade and corporate greed. Here in the Philippines, we suffer the same. We're being ruled by bureaucrats protecting only corporate interests and very much willing to sell every piece of property and natural resources to big conglomerates. My heart goes with you. Aloha!
As a born & raise Hawaiian, my heart & soul is full❤listening to this beautiful mele, that speaks of us! Mahalo Nui Loa for all involved in bringing our souls together ❤ & never to forget who we are as a sovereign people of this Aina! May our culture live on forever! Kupuna Pua Alapa-Bourgeois 😘❣
My grandfather Elson "Bobo" Brown is in this video....everytime I think of him, I watch this video..I miss and love you papa....mahalo for the memories and love you gave us
Napua Grieg has the most beautiful voice singing the Hawaiian language…I watch this video over and over to listen to her.. nice to listen to all of our talented singers and musicians… a wonderful production of this song written in protest to the annexation
Even before looking up the lyrics to this song, I found it moving and beautiful. After looking up the meaning of the words, I find myself overtaken with emotion esp. in light of the recent compounded tragedies of the fires in Maui. The words to this song are as resonant today as they were when they were first penned. It is my fervent hope that the people of Hawaii can one day soon have control over their homeland and that all the avaricious colonialists would be driven away.
Na keiki o ka bana lahui - kaulana Na pua... my daughter lilinoekekepahauomaunakea danced this at merrie monarch 2012 mahalo for our kumu and our wonderful musicians robert ma.... everlasting hugs ...sterling ma
Oh, my God !...This singing drives me crazy !,....Melodies of Heaven !....You gave me the blessing of your land, my incredible Vanessa !...Hawaii, my dream !!!!!!....What....what have you done, to me, Vanessa with your islands and their magic ?....

Love this mele. Listen to it and cant forget it. Spent 3 years in Pearl Harbor with the military. came to love it all. came to respect the culture and people. I too would support them if I still lived there. Still got family there bc I married an islander. I still miss it so.
Watching this video brought joy to my heart. Mahalo for bringing these awesome voices together and more importantly conveying such a profound message to our people. God bless you all!
Mahalo nui loa to all our National Ohana for preserving the life the love and the longevity of our Aloha aina through the gift of the mele. Malama the Kuleana to keep it pono with all our Kapunas our na Akua and na Aumakuas gifting the breath of our beautiful Hawai’i. Aloha wua ia oe to all my Ohana.
Awesome video, with a rare opportunity to bring together some of the outstanding artists of our Hawai'i Nei. Although I missed Amy, Led, and the Cazimero's on this video piece, it is truly a beautiful, and enjoyable work of art. Well done!!
I am honored to get this from your group for as a Hawaiian at birth till today , my love for Hawaii stands as Forever .. God bless all that has the ability to sing and enjoy Hawaii / with Love and Honor , I remain a Hawaiian at all times ,
I am Hawaiian at heart ever since visiting the islands in 1963 and learning to do Hula. One of my daughters moved to Kaua’i 45 years ago and now I have grandchildren and great grandchildren there. My Neice has a home in Maui and I have friends on Oahu and Hawaii Island. I am blessed to be able to spend many weeks there every year but I still have my home in San Diego. This music stirs me in my soul. It was one of the first hulas that I learned and I still do it today. I know several of the performers in this video and I love them all. Aloha Nui Loa🌺
My passport says Australian, as I am proudly Australian born and bred. But I feel a deep connection to the Kanaka Maoli of Hawai'i as I have Polynesian blood running through my veins and I have visited Hawai'i four times so far --- all four main Islands . I'm only partial Polynesian heritage through a paternal grandmother however Polynesian/ Pacific Islander people are connected by blood , heritage , kinship and the waters of the Pacific . We are not separated by water , distance or politics , but connected by the ocean highways of the Pacific and a common Pacific culture ! 🇦🇺🗿🏝🌊🤙👊👊👊👊
Beautiful... With such melodious tune, the American colonisers probably just flicked this protest off as a lovely hula song and marvelled at it, instead of paying heed to the message. Poor Hawaiian indigenous people.
Hallo Leute, Ihr macht fantastische Musik, einfach wunderbar. Man fühlt sich wie im Paradies durch diesen Einklang von Stimmen und Instrumenten. Schade ich war noch nie in Hawaii aber ich liebe es wie meine Bayerische Heimat.
So beautiful that this was a collaboration of all native Hawaiians from over the entire State of Hawaii. Remain true to your heritage. Me ke aloha pumehana, Robert S.J. Hu October 21, 2019
It's so great to come back to this site to hear genuine Hawaiian music like this !!!! Of course this refers to the Queen's song asking her people to oppose Hawaii's annexation to the United States. August 21, 2020.
Shame on those who put a thumbs down on this song!! This song is beautiful and so peaceful. Mahalo to those who put a thumbs up, because it is hard to be a Hawaiian especially when Hawaiian people get judged for there culture and the music they like. This is one of the most peaceful song that has Hawaiian love as the special ingredient in it!!
4:07 I've never been to Hawaii. Still, I get goosebumps after goosebumps and tears in my eyes. So beautiful. Unfortunately I don't understand the Hawaiian language.
I cannot comprehend who are the 343 people who dislike this heavenly hymn. I am Greek born and raised and proud to be one. But Hawai'i shook me to the core. I love this mele abd a great reminder of how the Queen felt and fought for our independance. These are not taught in public schools today.
How I found out that this was a protest song was when a group sang this song where each verse was followed by an English translation. Does anyone know the name of the group? It was very powerful!
Thank you 💕
You put it so eloquently.
The members of the ‘Committee of Safety’ were descendants of the G.D missionaries from the U.S. They stole Hawaii from the islanders.
To all us kanakas living in the states and listening to this in 2021 and missing home. I feel your pain my kanakas.
I have listened to this song many times over the years, and finally realized that this was a great project of love for Hawaii.

Having lived in Hawaii for over 20 years before retiring to Thailand, I can honestly say that this video made me want to pack my bags and fly back immediately. Absolutely beautiful.
Why can’t we all have a purpose as great as this? God help us all strive for peace and happiness always. Be good to each other.. in Jesus name.. Amen.

The english translation:
Famous are the children of Hawai`i
Ever loyal to the land
When the evil-hearted messenger comes
With his greedy document of extortion
Hawaiʻi, land of Keawe answers
Piʻilani's bays help
Mano's Kauaʻi lends support
And so do the sands of Kākuhihewa
No one will fix a signature
To the paper of the enemy
With its sin of annexation
And sale of native civil rights
We do not value
The government's sums of money
We are satisfied with the stones
Astonishing food of the land
We back Liliʻulani
Who has won the rights of the land
*(She will be crowned again)
Tell the story
Of the people who love their land
This song was written in 1893 in response to US Annexation of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Thanks so much
@@kali8085 can you also translate and show lyrics of the upfront chant at beginning of video?

Whoever is producing Hawaiian music like this - you are making the music of my SOUL

I listen to this song everyday!!❤
Udui1o1 definition of haoles is "greed" , simple as that. Never liked them, never will.
In addition, started w native Americans, drove them from plains n homes, put them in reservations. Damn u haoles.
@annadecastro-uu7td was that comment meant for me? It makes no sense whatsoever.
I’m not Hawaiian but love this song.

rest in peace Palani Vaughan...we lost two beloved musicians from Hawaii this year and featured in this video... the other Ernie Cruz Jr. your music will live on ♡ aloha
And now Roland Cazimero...three great musicians in to short a time...Aloha and RIP

I feel it too this song is I feel is of protest. Me pukiki original ohana since 1879.
I every time and I don’t know why and can’t explain or understand the emotion.
Cause every Koa, every point of a'a, every lapping wave along the sacred shores has been crying sine 1893 #itwasatuesday
Personally, all I need to is to hear a little slack key guitar riff, the rhythm of the ipus, or the prayer-like chant announcing the hula story that will unfold and I am all thumbs up
What a few moments of joy hearing this beautiful music and seeing beautiful Hawaii
thing is however, this is a song against US annexation
we, who have lost so much, still, have so much more. i am humbled...
The Hawaiian spirit thrives now and always will.
My teacher showed us this video in my Hawaiian Studies class. It struck something in me and I can't stop listening to it now. There artistic and symbolic in every aspect of the song and the video. I love it. "Hawaii for Hawaiians" .

All...RESPECT and LOVE.

The Kingdom of Hawai'i will always exist through the embodiment of the Kanaka Maoli ! 👌🏝🌊

Beautiful... With such melodious tune, the American colonisers probably just flicked this protest off as a lovely hula song and marvelled at it, instead of paying heed to the message. Poor Hawaiian indigenous people.
