My dream amp is probably a JCM 900 or Silver Jubilee. Classic Marshall ftw. For now I'm content modeling them, but one day I'll have them in my hands 😈.
I know that Colin explained the power section but for those who want a TLDR: usually tube amps (and maybe some early solid-state amps) relied on a transformer to step up or step down the voltage from your AC outlet to power the preamp and power tubes but they're various cons: 1.- They're heavy, and since amps use more than one, they add up to the weight. 2.- They tend to emit EM waves and they could get on your guitar signal ,making it noisier. 3.- If you get an amp from other parts of the world, like the EU, and you live in America you could not use it because they use different voltages. 4.- Since the amp require so much power, the transformer tends to heat up, that's one of the reason they have so many metal sheets/layers in their construction Blackstar implemented a switch mode power supply to get rid of most of these issues and like you said, they use output DC and it's less noisy than AC.
these unboxing videos are genuinely some of my favorite vids on the internet. I'm not really sure why, but they're just really cheery and good natured.
any chance we are gonna see a warmoth build. i have a 28 5/8ths baritone nack coming in for a jazzmaster body and just from the feeling of the body alone i can feel the quality, just gotta get it stained and grain filled before the neck comes
What makes tube amps heavy are the transformers. It’s a lot of iron. The St James is more like using a pedalboard power supply. Lightweight and compact.
The silver jubilees are my favorite sounding Marshalls. They can cover a lot of ground. Good for you hunter. 🤘 I get my jubilee tones from my 100 watt Marshall code, but it does it VERY convincingly.
Just so you know 99.9% of the time the driver has nothing to do with how bad the package looks when it gets to you. The package is handled multiple times by part time employees that load and unload trucks. They don't car about your package because they don't have to deal with the customer. As drivers we do and hate when we see packages look like that because then we have to listen to the complaints when we had nothing to do with the condition of the package.
I worked for UPS, I can also attest to this. There's a huge emphasis on speed. When you pack something to ship it, pack it like it's going to be kicked to its destination because I can guarantee it's going to get thrown.
@@whatskraken3886 Fluff / Riffs, Beards & Gear once said he didn't care for Blackstar amps. His fans/the internet warped that into a meme of him absolutely hating their existence.
I live about a 3 minute drive from the Marshall factory, and about a 20 minute drive from Blackstar. When I had my first job when I was a kid, you would occasionally see Jim Marshall going in to work to open up the factory at some silly time in the morning. A legend who would always wave/say hi
Love to see the return of Marshall, especially with a Silver Jubilee! Kind of a dream amp for me too, that or a JCM900 Master Volume MKIII 50W. That Blackstar looks pretty interesting too, nice to see a lightweight valve amp (though I do worry about the longevity of the amp given the amount of probably proprietary parts - yay alliteration!)
Love the whole idea of the Blackstar. They simply use a digital equivalent of a computer power supply which eliminates heat, weight and bulk. It is NOT in the audio chain other than it will not sag. Hence the faux sag circuit Backstar added. Actually most conventional Metal tube amps eliminate it from their conventional transformers because it does not add to a tight sound. The EL34 Plexi version of the same Blackstar does benefit from the sag. My main point is these amps are gigging players friend that do not compromise with the sound with transistor or digital based system that will never fool a real amp guy like me.
Dream amp. Man, I used to have ideas before I got into plugins and the HX stomp, but one I've been very curious about is the RedSeven Leviathan. Apparently it's a super clear KT88 powered behemoth that I saw John Browne demo ages ago and I would love to pair that with a custom 4x12
I can only imagine what getting a "dream amp" is like. My current dream amp is once of those Orange Rocker 32 combos. Hope I'm lucky enough to get it one day.
That Jubilee is gorgeous! I’ve been using a lot more Marshall amp sims lately. Fender still fits my playing better, but the Marshall tones can really make things pop in a recording mix.
Re: the Jackon Soloist- It's got a Floyd so it has to have a locking nut, so why locking tuners? In case someone wants to block off their term and take off the nut's clamp? They're superfluous and just add to the cost. I supposed it would make changing strings a little faster, but since you already have the locking nut you don't have to have several winds to make sure the string's not going anywhere. Dream amp - Right now one of the Catalyst 60s would be awesome. Either that or something like Dumble, so I could sell it and fix my house!
I, for one, am super psyched for a demo video of the Jubilee; the way you seem to dial tones is kinda the same as me and other demos I've seen don't seem to go for a metal tone but rather a hard rock tone so I'll be waiting for that one!
So, the deal with the weight of the new Blackstar amps is that they've ditched the input transformer in favour of... something more in line with the PSU on a PC, and since that doesn't have 2 big fuck-off lumps of iron with a shitload of insulated copper wire wrapped around them, it's a lot lighter. So one of the St James heads and the 2x12 (which has speakers with rare earth magnets, so again, lighter than most other speakers) weighs less than my Marshal DSL 100 head, and also less than the 2x12 I run it through.
Have the same amp, just in black tolex. If you're trying to get the sound you need to crank the volume. It doesn't give you the slash sound or bad religion sound unless the volume is turned way up. Only issue I've ran into it is the captor x has trouble handling it at certain volumes and the red indicator goes off.
I've been throwing a tube screamer in front of it and been getting a nice thrash-y tone with it! But yeah, definitely agree this is one of those amps that enjoys being cranked
Looking forward to the Silver Jubilee Review. And it would be interest if you could shootout the slime green EVH 5150 Guitar vs the green Jackson USA Soloist (mainly cause they're green superstrats, lol).
One day, we're going to see an unexpected box and it's going to be a production version of the Agufish sig and my wallet will be empty by the end of that day.
Kind of nice that Jackson still sends you stuff even though it's not your thing. I think most companies would probably blacklist you for negative comments/reviews
in answer to your first question, yes its a valve amp because we built it and I was actually born in Northampton, also ONLY Americans call football "soccer" and this is because football is a world sport, not a half arsed version of rugby with males wearing full body armour and helmets hahaha
I simply do not trust Blackstar for reliability. I have had 3. A HT5 head, which I still have, and a ID60 TVP and a Core 20. Both of them died rather quickly. Blackstar, as reliable as a no-name condom. The reactive load feature is perfectly in line with my comment.
I played through one of those blackstar heads and I remember it being all mids and nothing else, it sounded like garbage. There was no highs to speak of and it had such an annoying midrange even when you turn them down all the way. It had no business claiming to be American high gain. It sounded nothing like any of the American standby amps like a Mesa or even a 5150 and I'm not even a fan of 5150 so to say even that was better is a pretty remarkable disappointment
Just nitpicking about your sponsorship, when you said crafted by a "top nutritionist" you should say "dietician". The rhythm clip engages the diode clipping on the clean channel, BUT on the drive channel I believe it ads a bit more gain and a highpass filter.

ok
I put hipshot 3+3 open lockers on my ec256 last week. Install was so easy, and the tuning stability is rock solid now. Good stuff
Joe Bonamassa uses a Jubilee on the first couple of Black Country Communion albums, and obviously the tone is godly. I'd love to play one someday.
