The U.S has become a bewildering place of contradictions; too much consumption, with too little production, too little happiness or fulfillment, despite all the cmorts, 40 years of factories shutting down, PE Firms and Hedge Funds owning everything, and Amazon, Big Tech and Wal Mart turning millions into wage slaves while putting mom- n- pops out of business by the millions.
Fires, floods, droughts, massive heat, acidic oceans....yet we keep buying 10mpg SUVs and Pickups by the millions.....and denying their devastating effects, no one really says much about the root causes, certainly not mainstream media.
I send emails, voicemails to state officials and lawmakers, I attend rallies, argue with friends, occasionally demonstrate and volunteer; but these efforts fall on deaf ears. What to do!

I think it is a kind of "blindness" that happens when generation after generation experiences what good you're talking about. They end up taking it for granted. Most of us never see the rest of the world (in part due to high living costs that make it challenging to save money and travel.) But really, I think it is a lack of desire to understand. They don't reach out and a lot of them don't try to see beyond their own experience. I've never traveled overseas -or crossed any border but I loved to learn about other cultures and countries as a kid. I married a military man in my early twenties and I learned a lot from him when he came home from deployments. They have to want to "see" and I think a lot of people don't want to. If I could be rid of anything in this world it would be willful ignorance. One very beautiful thing we have is the possibility or chance to make changes if we really want them, to find ways ---because there are ways to reach for what we want. I came from living in poverty and now I live in what is called "middle class." I have work, a home, a small family and it takes all of us but we are good. I look back and know that it was because my mother sacrificed a lot and I kept going. I hope that somehow, every person in this world can find some happiness without people trying to destroy them along the way. A lot of people are blind because they choose to be and because it bothers them too much to look and see the truth.

I left the US in 2006 after serving in the military for 9 years, decided to stay in Italy rather than coming back to the US. Haven't regretted a single second of it and I am reminded of why I did so every time I come back to visit. I am not an expat, I am an immigrant. I emigrated from the US to Italy because I simply couldn't live in that society anymore. I am of modest means, and it would still take high 6 figures to get me to live back in the US, and even then it would only be temporary. I have a better quality of life here as a resident alien than I would as a combat veteran in my own country. I would not recommend Italy to people wanting to leave the US unless they feel it in their bones as their new home like I did. It has to speak to you. There are easier places to emigrate to in the world than Italy, it's just that Italy immediately felt like home when I arrived.
The proclivities and priorities of the American people are just so different from my own. People are so quick to blame the politicians they elect in the system that they continue to support without doing any self-reflection so as to change the direction they're going in. I get it, they're two different countries, and Bill was correct when he said you're just trading things you don't like about the US for things you won't like about the new country you will be living in. But there's one big...no...ENORMOUS caveat: the things that I dislike about living here pale in comparison to the things I dislike about living in the US, and no amount of money or lifestyle perks would fix it. The American people don't want to hear it, but the government is not to blame: the people are. The fact that people are divided over having a functioning social system is all the proof you need, and until they aren't divided, nothing will ever change because the politicians will court the constituents they feel will help them get re-elected and continue to poison the well.
It's not just that I prefer one place over the other, it's that living in the US comes with so many non-starters that it's not even a consideration anymore, especially with a family. However, if you want to leave the US just because you want to put different desktop wallpaper on your life, then you should stay right where you are. Emigrating from the US would be a bad decision for you. However, if you feel that you are at odds with just about everything, it could be a viable option, but don't think you're going to find a utopia.

Of course there are no perfect places, but people are free to express dislike of the place they currently live. Plus, there are plenty of people who have lived in one area and hated it and moved and love it. So while there are no perfect places, I think it's fair to say that some place might be the perfect place for oneself.
I don't agree that any place is what you make of it. My mother comes from West Virginia and it was poor when she left. It is only poorer still today. She moved to the Bronx in the 60's, met my father, bought a 2 family house in the burbs. She moved out of poverty into the middle class in one of the toniest areas of the country. Some areas do not provide the same access to opportunities as others.
The rise of right wing fascism should be of deep concern to everyone. Despite Maher saying no one actually leaves, I know 2 very well educated people who moved to England for that reason. I used to love Maher and watched him for 20 some odd years, but now he's bitter, out of touch, and it is sad to watch. He used to be on the side of the "little guy", but not anymore.

I think she will learn NO country doesn't have blood on their hands if you dig deep enough into their history!!! Humans will be humans no matter where they live. It's baked into our DNA, we are a violent people and the most dangerous predator's on the planet. As Jesus famously said "Let he who is without SIN cast the first stone", referring to stoning the prostitute caught in adultery. The Bible says "NO one is without SIN" on planet Earth!!!! Very TRUE!

Belgium calling here. I travel the world for work and do this for the past 30 years. Some visits were brief, others for months up to a year and this all over the globe. There is simply not "the best country" and sure is not the US. I have no connection with that country as I find it very shallow in social life and over the past years got so polarized that politics is dominating social life. The US is uber commercialized and medicated. Yes, I pay 50% on various taxes and other "innovative" payments but I do not need to worry to meet months end when there is a medical issue. There is no slave labor in the restaurants so waiters need that 17-20% tip.
There is lots to say about my home country, trust me, really a lot and will never ever label it as the land of milk & honey but politicians can declare themself atheist without loosing voters, we have abortion rights, try as much as we can to keep religion out of social life, ... We still have a medical system that puts people first rather that green ...
I sure love going to Southern Africa but that is a bubble (got a higher income that the locals making my life a breeze compared to theirs), I like going to South East Asia but you can't criticize politics and for sure not royals and I can go own. Once again, I am not blind for the shortcomings of my own country but wish the US was also not so blindly patriotic and dare to question rationally their daily life.

This is the best comment I’ve seen here. Life for America will always be great for the rich like Bill. However, it’s the middle class that enjoy a higher standard of life in other countries specifically in Europe. There is no evidence that the living standards for these people will improve, meanwhile a country like Belgium still views certain things like health care as human rights and won’t go away any time soon. Yeah, I’m with you on this one

Calling restaurant workers here slave labor reveals how dumb you are. They get paid and they're free to leave at any time. So the opposite of slavery. And if you think the U.S. today is blindly patriotic you're dead wrong. National morale has never been lower and the entire reason Bill Maher did this segment was to comment on a growing trend of "anywhere but here" Americans who are the majority of the country in modern times.

Bill Maher literally said that the US is not the best country in the world. His whole video was about how "there is no best country in the world." You completely missed the point of the entire segment. I lived in Paris for 12 years and Brussels for 2. Belgium is cool to visit for a day or two - sure. But Belgium is one of the most depressing countries I've ever lived in - especially cities like Antwerp. Not to mention Brussels is going to be majority Muslim by 2030. So pretty soon - it won't even be Belgium anymore. If the only reason you live in a country is because if you get sick, you won't pay a medical bill? Then you must be getting sick all the time and be in the hospital all the time or have a condition and need a hospital or doctor all the time - otherwise it's not much of a reason to live somewhere. What do you do with your days? Wait to fall down the stairs and break your leg so you can take advantage of not paying a bill? Once again - Bill Maher wasn't saying the US was better - he was saying that wherever you go - there are problems. Maybe rewatch the video?

I just started my own company and the government is paying for unemployment until I can make enough money to give myself a salary, I can watch the Superbowl, tons of amazing sports while eating better food which doesn't have what yee-haw Jesus freaks add to make profit over my health.

Ten reasons I don’t regret moving to Japan:
1: The government actually functions and can get basic fundamental things like infrastructure, paying bills, ETC done, unlike the in the US. This was the main negative for me when I left back in 2011. Things haven’t any gotten better by the way, they’ve gotten worse.
2: No religion in public schools, nor even a hint of trying to weasel it in there, You get to learn it at church or one of the private religious school if you choose one like that.
3: A guy like trump would have zero chance of representing any serious political party.
    4: Affordable health care!
    5; Free ambulance rides!
6: Generally better and more considerate drivers.
7: Exceptional food, and staff are usually very helpful in retail ETC.
8: It’s easier to cycle as a general rule, this will actually vary by area, but in my area it’s great!
9: Trains run on time, and are everywhere.
    10: Fewer nut jobs.
Bonus: It’s a lot safer here, and I won’t get shot at school, the grocery store, the concert, the park, on the road, at church,, at the movies, at the hospital, at the club,, I could go on but I’m sure you get the picture.
    Bad stuff:
1:An obsession with filling out paperwork just so, this will vary depending on area but can be very annoying.
2: Some folks can be a little petty in the performing of their duties.

The problem is there's no movement to improve things, no great groundswell of citizens demanding that things are made right, made more realistic in keeping with a democratic republic insuring equality. It's because they are programmed into accepting getting screwed, totally and irrevocably and apparently forever. There's no movement to make healthcare more affordable and available, allowing the medical industrial complex free rein to rip off everyone in sight and never allow sane universal healthcare. Healthcare outcomes continue to flounder while costs continue to be among the highest in the world. There's no move to have the rich actually pay taxes. If you're rich in the USA and you still pay taxes, you're just not paying attention to the tax breaks written into law for you by the greedy rich robber barons who are having a heyday. There's no move to improve education, There's no move to improve tolerance and inclusion of the immigrants who make up the vast majority of Usonians. No wonder they don't want to assimilate. There's no move to curtail racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny and xenophobia. On the contrary, the movements in the USA are to intensify and celebrate all of those. How many EFFECTIVE homeless reduction programs are there in your city? Is there any move, ANYTHING AT ALL, to stop the corporate rape of the economy, resulting in record profits, high inflation, and price-gouging for all? Things are not moving at all towards getting better, only getting worse. You can stay and hope that things will get better, but is that an intelligent choice? Is improvement likely to happen?
