I used to catch SO MUCH flak back in 2012 and 2013 on the forums for preaching UV was the secret to viral growth and color in LEDS especially and none of the fixtures had it, except Kessil. So happy to see the industry FINALLY including many more UV range in their fixtures. Great video as always!
With so many RUclips channels resorting to clickbait videos and lackluster information, it’s so nice that you guys continue to put out such great videos! Thank you
Randy presents this information the best of all the BRS Team. Its just something he is GREAT at. Thanks for the dedication to the hobby and all the staff who is part of BRS for all there work.
Another master episode, I learned something and that is the reason why I keep watching your content. It's cool to hear we are on the same page with T5 and Combo, in all my videos I recommended the Super Actinic and after it was either Super Purple or Actinic Blue. The only LED I recommended another bulb was with Radion G5 Blue with the Aquablue Azure (and Super Actinic) to just get a bit more white if desire. The correlation between Growth vs Color is a very very interesting subject. I still believe having a wider spectrum is important to accommodate most of the different types of corals.
I have a love hate relationship with these videos. The love is the info so to good and the tanks look awesome. The hate is I wish I could get my corals to look that good .
I have a nicrew hyper reef 50 with the controller on my 15-gallon column tank. Is this light considered a "black box" light? It's the nicest I could afford for now, but I want to make sure that saving for a kessil would be worth it or if that money would be spent elsewhere first
Hey, what you did not touch on at all was coral dipping. You should have really added this subtopic as it is a big part of getting new corals and can affect fluorescence and coloration! Maybe you can do an experiment on different corals dips and how they affect coloration :) I use coralRX and on SOME (not all) Acropora i notice a slight but noticeable loss of coloration. Especially "deepwater" acros like suharsonoi, lokani, echinata really take a hit on coloration after dipping. (my experience)
Really enjoying this series. Have been my practice to keep the cool white channel on my Radions from 15% to 5% during the sunset, tank still will be blue, but that littler white light will enhance the colors on corals a lot better than just only blue. Also is the ingredient that will allow better pictures under blue.
I have an new mixer reef tank (160x60x60cm). What light do you suggest? I want to keep all sps,lps and softies. I love the way the corals pop in the evening. I dont want to pay 1k+ per light (since i prob need more than one). Could you help me? I was looking at the ai blades but they arent availeble in the Netherlands yet :( I also like the lights the reef dork uses (at night his tank looks like a candy store!)
Good day sir. I have a few questions for you please. I am in the Caribbean and very interested in this. What Nm lights do I need to do this at a natural reef? 15’ depth . Without harming reef. I’m hoping for the most colour I can get. I desperately need a crash course for dummies. You mentioned white, red etc but does it work to 15’ depth? I thought blue exciter and yellow filter barrier was all I needed. Boy was I wrong !!! I need to learn more so I can rig my boat for reef light show. That would be so cool. Thank you for the video .
Most of our aquariums are 2 maybe 3 feet tall max. For lighting at 15', you're going to probably have to go with metal halide lighting or talk to an LED company like Kessil about public aquarium grade lights.
The problem the settings that are the most beautiful for the corals are not for the fish :-/Also what is the best, keep the same color all day or simulated a day hour/hour. My corals seems to love this but the tank look different every our
What is the name of the big green acro. Is that a greenslimer? I see all these fancy colored acros with mixed colors but in videos I just see solid color ones mostly green. Are there any corals that are yellow besides sun coral or maybe spave invader has some yellow and dendros. Green and purple and orange are the most common it seems. Love me some hot pink and yellow corals but never see them. I havt tried sps yet so mostly speaking of lps or softies or would like to try easy sps. My first try was setosa and it died!
There are a lot of corals in this video, is there a particular time stamp that you're referring to? For example, at 16:30, the big green branching coral is a green slimer :)
Does the "wrong" mix of wavelengths of light hurt fish and coral health? Even though that mix may make coral and fish look good. Like bumping up reds to bring the pop in red fish.
Fish cant see the red spectrum. Thats why if you need to catch a fish you turn out the lights except red so you can see, and then capture the fish when they think its dark
Is it okay to put carbon in a sock like on this video? I have been doing that since I have barely any flow in my sump. I am planning on getting a reactor when I order lights but just in the meantime..
I know, but to be fair there are a handful of other LED options not mentioned. If it's any consolation, we do have the ReefLEDs on the list for BRStv Investigates testing. :)
@@glennrudolph back then they weren't UL listed, now they are(that's at least what the page says) and some people and companies sell an upgrade board to make the spectrum better by adding UV. It is kinda ridiculous that LEDs(proper ones) are out of reach for some of us who don't make much.
I have discussed it with the team, kinda black box showdown. Skip all the talk about why they are poor quality, everyone buying them already knows they are cheaply made and not likely to last long and no one really wants to hear a reminder. Just a showdown of the cheapest stuff out there. Maybe we will finish this year's lighting investigates with that but like Glenn said, for now, we owe it to the people who buy lighting from us to help them with setting those lights up optimally first.
@@ShawnComposer Keep an eye out for the AI prime investigates. Unless you are going wall to wall SPS , you might be surprised by what that light can do, way more affordable and something that will last.
You guys run your mouth like you know so much about lighting and you sound like you do ... lol! "but" you don't show how you achieve it or show the settings in detail. Sounds like you are trying to sell the lighting there infront of you and you have done a good job I bought 3 ...lol... AI Prime reef 16hd, bad ass light man bought 3 over a 100 gallon reef, bad ass light AI dont pay me a dime it's just it is what it is...
A different point of view. I'm not gonna get any likes or 'hearts' for this. lol. But to me, in my opinion, if you guys want to achieve that '70s 'black light room' effect on these living creatures, you might as well gene-slam them Monsanto-style. Lambasting them with this intense spectrum may force growth like with foie-gras, but to me, in my opinion, an actinic spectrum not only looks MUCH more natural, I don't end up back in the 70s again. And dipping? in what pray tell? I hope it's not my ignorance.. but if that dip is only to achieve the coral equivelant of 'glow fish', that to me is cruel. I'm in the wrong place with opinions like mine I think. The channel seems to heavily promote false color in coral display and/or propagation
Master Reef Tank Lighting in just a few episodes!

Very well explained & represent coral florescent from all different led spectrum 👍
Sweet reef chili cameo behind the zucht, need to get some when it’s back in stock.
I just got a ai hydra 32 about a month ago for my nano tank and this video really helped. Thanks!!
Great video Ryan. I am now using a T5/XHO Reefbrite combination on my 600g display 😁
Thanks for all the information you guys figure out with the scientific approach ...
👍. Nice shirt looks super comfortable. 😁
I love seeing the different colors and how they effect the way the tank looks. Cool video! Looking forward to a reef brite add-on video at some point.
Also, every time Ryan says “420 actinic” and then I see that long hair, you know where my mind wanders.
@@glennrudolph LOL. Going back to my hippy roots :)
Awesome video, moving more to the advanced level of lighting :)
As always, great advice. Thanks
What temperature you need the tank be with coral in it and what size uv led need to be for good coral
Why wasn’t nutrient levels and how it effects coral coloration addressed?
I have the RedSea 90 light and I have 3 settings... blue white and moonlight.
I guess I need to increase my white to bring out the colors more?

You should do an in depth video on the maxspect razor.
It's on the way in the next few weeks! ;)
Nice, I never know what to do with the C (ultra violet?) or D (yellow?) channels.
I want to know what makes pink in Acans turn to orange in mine.
It's obviously lighting, it happens slowly. Is it reversible?

Shawn's Modern Classical Music if they don’t sell it, it’s probably for a reason. I wouldn’t expect another black box review any time soon.
