    My Story With Stopping Drinking And Weight Loss
    The first time I stopped drinking for an extended period of time, I was relatively fit. I felt healthy, my body-fat was low and I had great energy levels.
    However, for those of you that know my story, the first time I stopped drinking, I did it with sheer willpower.
    Eventually, my willpower ran out. I started drinking again.
    I put on weight and my fitness levels soon diminished. I started feeling sluggish again, my strength deteriorated and I wasn’t looking my best.
    But, now that I have stopped drinking again, I have lost the added body-fat and I feel awesome again.
    Let me know in the comments if you have lost weight since stopping drinking…
    How Many Calories Are In Alcoholic Drinks?
    Firstly, alcohol contains calories.
    So, by drinking alcohol you are increasing your caloric intake.
    If you consistently go over your maintenance calories (or the number of calories you require to maintain your current body weight) you will, unfortunately, put on weight.
    So, by drinking alcohol over prolonged periods of time, it can lead to slow and steady weight gain.
    Interestingly, alcohol is one of 4 macronutrients.
    You heard that right. Alcohol is a macronutrient, just like protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Interesting, right?
    However, because alcohol is unnecessary for our survival, it is rarely mentioned in any fitness apps, calorie calculators, and so on.
    Alcohol is the second-highest macronutrient - containing 7 calories per gram.
    For reference, fat contains 9 calories per gram, and protein and carbohydrates both contain 4 calories per gram.
    According to the NHS:
    * 175ml glass of 12% wine contains 133 kcal
    * A pint of 5% beer contains 239 kcal
    * A 330ml bottle of 4% alcopop contains 172kcal
    * A double measure of gin contains 95 kcal
    Some drinks and cocktails can contain a lot more calories - anywhere up to 500 kcal per drink, depending on how much sugar and mixers are added to them.
    So, in other words, we know there are a bunch of calories in alcoholic beverages.
    Are Alcohol Calories The Same As Food Calories?
    I know what you’re thinking.
    If you’re trying to lose weight, why don’t you just count the calories of your drinks and use that to see how much you are consuming each day?

    Daily beer drinker for 5 years and I just couldn't take it any longer; the misery, weight gain, self loathing, pancreas pain, spending anywhere from $300-500 a month, and isolating myself while drinking. I am 2 weeks sober and I literally have never felt better. I have already lost 5 pounds but more importantly, my self esteem is through the roof. I have zero desire to drink again. I’ve since cleaned up my diet and went into the life of fitness. I’m now 194 lbs. No more pot belly, double chin is gone, man boobs are gone as well. I've been a heavy drinker for about 15 years. I am 6'3" and was up to 295 lbs. I quit drinking 3 months and 6 days ago. I don't miss it at all. I feel so much better! The first couple months there was very little weight loss as I had severe sugar cravings and I indulged myself with sweets. I wasn't really watching the scale but a few weeks ago someone commented on my weight loss. I was down 15 lbs. Today I weighed and I'm down to 270. 25 lbs down. It's crazy because I haven't really done much except eating a little less, especially with those drunk munchies. I've worked out a little but I'm about to ramp that up to keep it going. If you don't lose a lot at first, stick with it. Eventually it will start to fall off like you have a tapeworm lol! Keep it going people! Sober life has so much more to give!

    Almost 90 days sober here, have lost 36lbs. I have been dieting and exercising so it's not all due to just cutting out alcohol but believe me, theres no way I would have achieved that if I was drinking/nursing a hangover every other day.. when I drank I drank ALOT and then theres all the eating and inactivity for 2-3 days afterwards too.

    I am on day 4 without any alcohol. But my drinking is super light weight. I haven't been buzzed or drunk in years. I'd only have 1 drink prior to dinner and then go to bed. Why do I want to quit at such low level consumption? Well, I'm getting pretty tired of having my sleep disrupted within a few hours into the night. I'm also an athlete loves to keep in shape and work out. My love for health and fitness is rooted in the idea that I would like to be that old man who doesn't need meds to stay alive. And with sleep being important for the sake of proper recovery, the booze has to be sent packing. I mean seriously......just last night, I slept better than I ever have in quite some time now. Keep up God's work, Leon.

    After drinking vodka, wine and beers to a crazy degree every week (I guess a minimum of 4 or 5 bottles of vodka a week, 4 bottles of wine and 10 beers) I hit rock bottom and I stopped 7 days ago. Alcohol stops you doing so many positive things like working out or just being a generally active person. People speak a lot as though the alcohol is doing these things by design, almost attaching human qualities to the substance...for me that's an easy way out...I had to recognise the use of alcohol was a by product of where I'm at in my life right now and the easy way to escape my own displeasure with my own life was to drink. Well, I've decided to take back control and face life head on. Wish me luck

    Im down from 200 pounds to 185 in 7 months. But I still drink 2 liters of vodka on the weekend. I still drink way too much, but its nice to see my (weekday) abstinence physically. I also feel so much better during the week, 5 hours of sleep without drinking is easily better than 12 hours of sleep after drinking.

    I've been off the beer for two weeks now. I was a daily drinker (all day, every day - about a pint an hour) and my appetite was tiny. I think because my stomach was always processing the liquid, I never really felt hungry, and when I did eat I was full after a few mouthfuls. Since stopping drinking my appetite has come back a bit, but I'm surprised at how much I'm craving sweet/chocolate stuff. Jam Wagon Wheels are my current 'go to' snack. While I was drinking I never used to touch chocolate. So while I'm not pumping in the calories through alcohol, I'm eating miles more sweet stuff then I ever used to.
    I was about 77/80kg when I stopped drinking. Gonna weigh myself after 4 weeks and see what the deal is.

    Just a reminder for anyone on this journey not to let your dieting get in the way of your sobriety. I found the first few times, I would often get a real urge to drink again when I was feeling really tired - it took me a while to figure out that often what I needed was just a good meal. The weight loss will come naturally if you stay off the beers, and there's no rush to lose the weight.
