  • In today's video we're once again running cabling in a friend's new build house. However this time, in addition to the usual networking cabling, we are also running speaker wiring and installing a totally overkill whole-home audio setup powered by a Biamp Tesira Server-IO DSP and separate power amplifiers installed in a 48U rack in the garage. We also install downlights in the bathroom and several ceiling speakers in some of the rooms.

    Always amazed at how houses are built in other countries. In The Netherlands a lot of houses are concrete ceiling and cinderblock/stone or even concrete walls where you could not be able to run cables like this. So in most cases you have to think about where you want things during the build, or "mill" grooves in the wall to put cable "conduits" in.

    Love the setup, i miss the nice Tisera DSP at my last job, dante audio and all was a great bit of kit to play with. Im doing a similar setup myself using a control4 16 channel amp, and trying to come up with a decent DSP, this might have just convinced me to spend the money than DIY it.

    Nice video :)
    Using the low impedance versions (24C) of the JBLs in a long cable length application like the multi-room setup, I'd have used thicker speaker cables but maybe that's just me. That Crown amplifier does have the 70/100v line capability for 24CTs, but maybe it's just not necessary until you get to big commercial installations.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад +4

      The difficulty with higher voltage speakers is the limited frequency response - fine for background music and PA applications but probably not as good for a setup like we have here. They'd be required for huge commercial installs and when speakers need daisy chained.etc but realistically here, the cable runs aren't actually that long. Most runs we have here will be well under 10m long which is probably not far off what you'd find in some home 5.1 setups where the speaker cables need to take a long route around a room. Based on the information here www.cambridgeaudio.com/usa/en/blog/speaker-cables it's best to keep the resistance of the cable to less than 5% of the speaker's impedance. With the where I measured the continuity to identify the cable, the resistance (of both conductors added together) was 0.34Ω, so with 16Ω speakers we're well within that, could practically double the length and still be fine.

      @@camerongray1515 I was wondering about frequency response, and maybe even high-quality transformers would've affected sound quality. But yeah it seems low impedance works just fine :) thanks for taking the time to reply!

    11:36 There exist flexible installer bits which are designed for drilling through framing lumber within stud wall cavities. They're usually 36" long or so and come with a tool designed to hold the shaft in the desired position while drilling. They're invaluable for drilling perpendicular holes through plates. I often use mine with a cheap USB borescope connected to my phone so I can see what I'm doing.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад

      Those bits look ideal however weirdly they aren't particularly common in the UK. Every time I look into getting one I can only really find them available if I were to import them from the US which would take too long to arrive so I never bother ordering one, then by the time I next have a use for one it's too short notice to get one again. I just need to bite the bullet at some point and get one to hold onto for the next time I inevitably need one!

  • @francistheodorecatte
    @francistheodorecatte 2 года назад

    something to point out to anyone who wants to mess around with the Tesira ecosystem; you can get TesiraForte AI or AVB AIs for very, very cheap. for whole home audio you likely don't need AEC inputs (or many inputs at all). I configure and install these basically every day (TesiraForte AVB CIs mostly). using AVB also opens up using remote expanders like the EX-UBT, which gives you ASIO over USB and bluetooth input.

    • @francistheodorecatte
      @francistheodorecatte 2 года назад

      AVB is license encumbered, though. you can get around that by just using a PoE injector if you don't happen to have an AVB licensed switch hanging around, since it's just link-local multicast anyway. or you could use Dante, which isn't license encumbered, and companies like Shure are very much into, and Biamp also supports with their DAN models. Biamp engineers (from the ones I talk to) seem to prefer AVB, however (as do I).

      Yeah, we used the padsaw for the speakers then just basic holesaws for the downlights and holes in the garage. The test meter is a Di-Log 9083P. Then for the speakers we are using the JBL Control 24C then the bathroom has a Cloud CS-C4HW. We also have a few other speakers from Cloud for use elsewhere but I'm not sure of the actual models.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад +1

      I wasn't 100% sure since I couldn't necessarily find exactly what BS7671 covers in terms of data and audio wiring. I think officially it doesn't really apply to traditional communications wiring although it's not unreasonable that the same cable route could be used to carry alarm wiring or PoE ethernet cables which would technically be classed as "Extra Low Voltage" which is still covered under the regulations. With these sorts of things I'd always err on the side of caution but I definitely feel like it's nice to make the cable routes identifiable - just wish it was the same with things like plumbing rather than having to drill and hope you don't hit a pipe!

    • @usernametaken9179
      @usernametaken9179 Год назад

      It's also worth knowing that Part P doesn't apply here in Scotland. Which is to say, only a qualified electrician is allowed to work on 240v circuits.

    Great video as always. When running CAT6A around my house i got quite anal about keeping the network cabling away from 240v due to interference. How much of an issue is this to networks?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад +3

      It's not something I worry about too much, it's best practice to keep them apart but it's unlikely to be an issue in a domestic setting - it's more likely to be an issue in commercial settings where you have electrical cables carrying huge current. So maybe if you have the choice between running it near to a 6A lighting circuit or a 40A shower circuit, maybe avoid the shower circuit but I wouldn't get too hung up over it. Dado trunking used commonly in offices (where you have sockets and network on the same trunking) only gives around 5cm distance between the network and power compartments. Same goes for floor boxes where you'd often have network and power sockets in the same area. Then if you think about things like in data centers where you have a hell of a lot of power and data cables in the back of a server rack. So TL;DR, it's best practice to keep them apart but not the end of the world.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад +2

      Additionally, I've seen people erroneously citing BS7671 regulation 528.1 which states that Band I (communications) and Band II (mains) need to be separated. This only really applies where the cables aren't sheathed (i.e. the individual Line, Neutral and CPC wires are exposed with only the brown, blue and yellow insulation covering them) and not for something like T&E cable which is sheathed. So don't go running network cables through a pattress box where the sheathing has been stripped off or through conduit containing single insulated wires but this doesn't apply to running it alongside T&E. This is why things like those "media panels" (e.g. www.bewdirect.co.uk/wiring-accessories/white-moulded-sockets-&-switches/deta-slimline/deta-s1985-media-plate-socket-white-s1985 ) which have a couple of sockets and euro module slots on the same plate use a backbox that has a metal separator between the area that contains the sockets and the area that contains the euro module (www.bewdirect.co.uk/wiring-accessories/miscellaneous/metal-back-boxes/40mm-flush-lounge-box-db184 ) - it's to stop the Band I cables coming close to the exposed Band II conductors behind the sockets. Once the cables leave that back box, they'll likely be running pretty close to each other.

    Does the amp just send once source to all outputs/channels or is it multi input/output capable ?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 года назад +1

      The amp has 8 inputs and 8 outputs. So the Tesira has a different output connected to each input on the amp, then each input on the amp feeds to a single output (It's basically like having 8 separate amplifiers in one box). The Tesira then handles which sources to send to which output.
